EPISODE 33 - “Zachary Scott: Star of the Month (May)” - 04/29/2024 Suave, debonaire, and effortlessly charming, ZACHARY SCOTT is best known for his role in MICHAEL CURTIZ's film noir classic Mildred Pierce (1945). As the duplicitous, silver-tongued charmer Monte Beragon, he romances Mildred, played by JOAN CRAWFORD (in her Oscar-winning role), and Mildred's daughter, Veda (ANN BLYTH). This became Scott's signature role: the sexy cad who was usually at his best swindling, seducing, or being a general scoundrel. It was always fun watching Scott's dastardly ways unfold. He could rock a tux, looked naked without a martini in his hand, and always had a cigarette close by. He was so magnetic that he could even make film-goers feel sorry for him. While he seldom got to play the good guy, when he did, as in what is perhaps one of his best roles in JEAN RENOIR's The Southerner (1945), you realize the versatility that he seldom had the opportunity to display. With a career that included over 40 films and dozens of television roles, ZACHARY SCOTT is our Star of the Month. What locally-driven solutions are helping those most harmed and setting the stage to rebuild better?"Reporter Pete Hirschfeld talks to some of those who were hit hardest over the summer, from a family whose home is still uninhabitable to a woman on dialysis who lives alone. "Nowadays even presidents, vice-presidents, and heads of big agencies are opening their minds to accept psychic phenomena, because they know it works." - Uri Geller Christopher Robinson - Dream Detective/Premonition Man - His NDE experience and decades of becoming fluent in deciphering dream codes have given him the confidence and assurance to confront - with evidence - detractors and built-in barriers inherent within the science community. His PSI abilities offer a definite edge.    We don't get into the run ins he has had with skeptics, he does address that in the book. As a media person, it is disappointing to see how easy it is to acquire automatic credibility with the skeptic label. Attitude without evidence. No experience required. I challenge that by seeking out those who defy the odds to produce consistent results that keep skeptics (the downside) employed. The Premonition Man. Website. Book. Amazon Affiliate Link. About Chris: "The whole lifetime of Christopher Robinson, also known as The Premonition Man, has been an experiment in 'Communication' with the 'Other Side', mainly via his thousands of nightly, highly accurate, precognitive, lucid dreams." Authors Grant and Jane Solomon are also authors of The Scole Experiment, A five-year scientific investigation seeking evidence for Consciousness in the Afterlife and Hyperlife. "Through my work I got to know Chris Robinson, who's a precognitive psychic. He has a unique ability. It's still not well understood. He was having these dreams. And one of the dreams was the towers being hit. He'd actually gone to the US Embassy. And he had also gone to authorities in the UK. That information was openly shared with US Authorities. PRIOR to 9/11. And it was IGNORED." Christopher sent me copies of his dreams, several newspaper headlines, and the explicit warning [to humanity] from the ET grand master to share on my blog. Why is updating website and content auditing popular right now? Well, 10 years ago, people didn't need to audit their websites. It wasn't a thing. Generally speaking, websites we're pretty new. Now that sites are getting to be 10, 15, or 20 years old. There's a lot of upkeep and maintenance. Some are referring to this problem of old "blog content decay". If I'm looking ahead to the future, I think this will be a much more common topic and problem, and process that people follow in the coming years. In my latest podcast, I sat down with Tom Drake, the owner of MapleMoney.com, and a partner at GetRichSlowly.org. To revive old content, Tom is no stranger. He started his blog a decade ago.  And Get Rich Slowly (founded by JD Roth) was one of the original personal finance blogs started about 15 years ago! With over 5000 old blog posts to update and audit, it's no easy task. Tom breaks down precisely the process he uses to update (or delete) content.

It was a Christmas hit that literally had to be rescued from the trash! This is the story behind…Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. #BehindTheChristmasHits is Presented by Pizza Pizza! It was written for Judy Garland’s 1944 movie Meet Me in St. Louis. The film was notable for a couple of reasons: the song and for being where Judy and the film’s director, Vincent Minnelli, met and fell in love. They married in 1945 and then Liza Minnelli was born the next year. The movie tells a year in the life of the Smith family beginning in 1903 and leading up to the World’s Fair the following year. Meet Me in St. Louis became the second-highest grossing film of 1944 and had a hugely successful soundtrack with three hit songs – hey, that’s just like Flashdance! Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is heard after Garland’s character, Esther, becomes engaged to the handsome boy next door, John Truitt, at a fancy Christmas Eve ball – however, their engagement means, they have to move from St. Louis to New York – something that doesn’t sit well with Esther’s 5-year-old sister, Tootie. Songwriter Hugh Martin wrote a melody for the song but threw it away after being unable to figure out what to do with it. When I say threw it away, I mean, in the trash to be taken out by custodial staff. After telling his writing partner, Ralph Blane, what he had done the next day, Blane insisted they start going through trash cans because that melody was too good to throw out. Blaine once told NPR “thank the lord we found it.” That said, Judy Garland had some major problems with the original lyrics and refused to sing them. She thought they were far too sad and gloomy and needed some hope & optimism. Hugh Martin wrote in his biography, The Boy Next Door, he refused to rewrite it and stood by the song as it was. That’s when Garland’s co-star, Tom Drake, came to Martin and said “I’ll think you’ll be sorry if you don’t do this.” So Martin went home and wrote the version heard in the movie. How sad were those original lyrics? Well, the line "Let your heart be light / Next year all our troubles will be out of sight" was originally written as "It may be your last / Next year we may all be living in the past.” There was a lot of pain in those original lyrics – something that wasn’t often expressed in Christmas music back then. But Judy Garland wasn’t alone in her feelings that it was too sad. In 1957, Frank Sinatra tweaked the line “Next year all our troubles will be miles away” to the now more commonly heard “From now on our troubles will be miles away.” Suddenly, a wish for a better tomorrow became more of a celebration of the present day. Depending on how the music is arranged, you can still get those melancholy feels…but any hint of the pain in Martin and Blaine’s original lyrics…was now gone. Ralph Blane passed away in 1995. Martin lived until he was 96 in 2011…and he liked to keep up with who was recording new versions of their song every year. He told Entertainment Weekly he enjoyed Sarah McLachlan and James Taylor’s…and called Twisted Sister’s version “a hoot.”Thanks for joining us. Ralph welcomes Tom Mueller, author of “Crisis of Conscience: Whistleblowers in an Age of Fraud,” where they discuss the heroic stories of the brave men and women, who at great personal cost, have called to account corruption across government and industry. Plus, Ralph answers your questions.   Tom Mueller is a free-lance writer of non-fiction and fiction, whose work has appeared the New Yorker, National Geographic, New York Times Magazine, Atlantic Monthly, and elsewhere. His first non-fiction book, Extra Virginity, is a New York Times best-selling account of olive oil culture, history, and crime. His latest is Crisis of Conscience: Whistleblowing in an Age of Fraud. “Bill Binney had the awful irony of having created this structure to surveil foreign targets and winnow out at top speed potential terrorists and seeing his own work… being used against Americans. It was a thing he had sworn every day of his working life not to do… So, he backed away from the agency (NSA) when he felt they were fundamentally violating their mission. And what would Edward Snowden take away from this message? If you follow protocol and you surface your concerns about mass, warrantless surveillance through channels, what happens to you? Well, all he had to do is look at Bill Binney and Tom Drake and see that his only hope of getting the word out was to take another route.” Tom Mueller, author of Crisis of Conscience: Whistleblowing in an Age of Fraud “If you look at what Donald Trump is today and his coterie of bandits that he’s put in charge of our government, you can see the price that is paid when you do not pay attention to recidivist white-collar criminality over a generation or more. You get Donald Trump… Donald Trump didn’t come from Mars. He is the logical extension of the corruptions we’ve allowed to creep into our political and social system.” Tom Mueller, author of Crisis of Conscience: Whistleblowing in an Age of Fraud RALPH NADER RADIO HOUR EP 295 TRANSCRIPT (Right click to download)

Today our roundtable discussion focuses on one set of homeowners who successfully sold their house, but realized that they could've saved $60,000 if they had instead rented and never purchased the home in the first place. Is buying a home a waste of money? Did the couple make some big mistakes that we can all avoid? Did they use professionals wisely or make some bad decisions? Discussing this headline with us are three veterans of the financial blogging and podcasting community: Tom Drake from MapleMoney.com, Paula Pant from Afford Anything, and Len Penzo from LenPenzo.com Halfway through the show, we'll take a break from our rent vs. homeownership discussion while Joe sits down with Jean Statler from the Alliance for Lifetime Income. The organization is working with MIT's AgeLab on an important issue: the risk that we might outlive our savings. Jean reviews the problems the public has had with annuities and dives into the discussion of what the industry is doing to clean up perceptions and simplify products. It's a very frank and enlightening conversation about an often maligned financial tool AND the issues surrounding living longer. During our Magnify Money segment, we'll take a call from Kurt, who has a question about his workplace tuition reimbursement. If Kurt doesn't stay with his employer for three years he owes back all of the cash his company gave him for school expenses. Right now he has the amount sitting in a savings account, what should he do with it? Should he invest it? Pay down debt? Leave it in savings? Our team bounces around several possibilities. I don't know how I've had this podcast for over 3 years and haven't had one of the OG Canadian personal finance bloggers on the show yet, but here he is! The one and only Tom Drake, blogger and podcaster at Maple Money! He's been in the game for almost 10 years, and he's dropping all types of knowledge bombs in this podcast on investing, making money and budget like a pro! Long description: My next guest was supposed to be on my podcast 3 years ago! That’s when myself and Tom Drake from Maple Money first talked about him getting on my show. Well, I don’t know what happened, but at least I got my act together and finally got him on the show. And honestly, he was worth the wait! A lot has changed for Tom in the past 3 years. He has been blogging for almost a decade, and recently rebranded his blog to Maple Money and started his own podcast called the Maple Money Show. As I mention at the beginning of this episode, Tom is literally the nicest guy. Which could be why he’s one of my personal favourite finance bloggers and I am so thrilled with all of his success. What’s even crazier is he blogs and podcasts on the side! He still has a day job and somehow manages to get it all done. Oh, he also has a family. How he does it all, I have no idea. But luckily for me, he does share lots of his finance wisdom when it comes to investing, making money and budgeting on the show. Investing: Get Out of Mutual Funds As Tom shares in the episode, he got out of high-fee actively-managed mutual funds as soon as he got a better understanding of what he got himself into. Now, there’s technically nothing wrong with these type of investment products, but the thing is there are better products out there. Namely index funds and ETFs. Since moving out of mutual funds, Tom has been managing his own portfolio of ETFs using a Questrade account, but he’s actually thinking of switching to a robo-advisor to lessen his work-load which I thought was pretty interesting. There’s definitely benefits to both, so it was refreshing to hear a DIY investor actually express interest in using a robo-advisor instead. Making Money: Why Not Earn Money with Your Hobby? Several years ago, I saw Tom speak on a panel of bloggers at the Canadian Personal Finance Conference. One of the questions they were asked was what they thought of monetizing their blogs? Most of the panel said they didn’t monetize their blogs and were more focused on just creating good content, but I remember Tom distinctly share that he’d do anything to make money. Obviously he was kidding, but I loved how he was so honest about how it shouldn’t be a bad thing for bloggers to want to earn money from their blogs and work with brands. As someone who does this, and is thus able to create a bunch of free content for my audience, I totally agree! Why not earn money from your hobby, and why not turn your hobby into a business? Budgeting: Micro-Budgeting Doesn’t Work Micro-budgeting, or having specific categories in your budget you need to try to stick to, just doesn’t work. Another point that Tom and I share. He shares that he manages his family’s finances and they allocate money to savings and fixed expenses, then have a specific number they want to stay within for their variable expenses. It’s just a simpler way to budget since in most cases it’s impossible to stick to a hard $400 for groceries or $100 for entertainment each month. Today I'm excited to have one of the top personal finance bloggers in Canada on the show. Tom Drake is the president of Drake Media Inc. and the owner and manager of dozens of personal finance sites, including his primary site: MapleMoney where you can learn more about the best credit cards in Canada, as well as other personal finance best practices. He has been called the godfather of personal finance, and today I'm thrilled to have him on the show to talk all about the best practices when it comes to using credit cards, as well as the top credit cards that he recommends. Links and Resources Top Tools and Resources for Financial Independence (for Canadians): Sign up anywhere on www.BuildWealthCanada.ca for a free guide on all the top tools and sites that I've personally used to help us achieve financial independence in our early 30s. They're also what we use now to optimize and manage our finances, and ensure that we're paying the lowest fees while getting solid returns on our investments. Kornel's investing course with free sample lessons at www.BuildWealthCanada.ca/invest Tom's site: MapleMoney (formerly Canadian Finance Blog) Questions Covered: What are some best practices when it comes to credit card use? Some credit cards have perks like extended warranty on purchases or travel insurance. How do you take advantage of these benefits? Is it a hassle to claim them? Many credit cards are free while others have a fee but have better rewards. Is there an easy way of determining whether it's worth to get the paid option? What if you can't pay off your entire balance at the end of the month? What are some options you'd recommend if you actually need to borrow some money (i.e. HELOC, secured loan, unsecured loan). Your thoughts on saving for an emergency fund vs paying off credit card debt. What are the advantages and disadvantages of having credit cards? Should we be concerned about credit limit utilization? (ex. keeping credit limit utilization under 30%) What are the top credit cards in Canada that you'd recommend?

Many years ago, internet marketers around the world shouted this “incredible” strategy from the rooftops: “If you could build a site that made $50 a month, all you had to do was make 100 of them and you’d create yourself a nice little income.” All true. But… … rarely does a business just generate cash, […] The post MBP #33: How Tom Drake Built, Bought, and Partnered His Way to a 40+ Blog Network appeared first on Microblogger.

Don't have time for video or a podcast? This week's lesson is: find a group of like-minded people and split the work. This month we interview 5 veteran bloggers (and FinCon attendees) who shared the workload to create a live video show, recorded it for a YouTube channel, then used the audio as a podcast. Their podcast, the Money Mastermind Show, is currently #3 in the iTunes "New & Noteworthy" section. How did they split duties? How hard was it to create the video? How do they decide on topics? How does the technology work? We cover all of that and more with three of the participants: Glen Craig, Tom Drake and Miranda Marquit today. ....and as if that weren't enough, Beverly Harzog (author and BeverlyHarzog.com) and Rob Berger (Doughroller and the Doughroller podcast) share their take-aways from last year's FinCon. They have some great stories about how they've implemented several of the ideas they learned. Eric Rosenberg details Ignite FinCon for us. PT and Joe share news about the Plutus Awards, speakers and much, much more. Thanks to GoBankingRates.com for sponsoring the show! You could win $1,000 by making a 1 minute video for FinCon. Answer To Last Week's Trivia Question: Q: Who played the slide guitar on the classic Eric Clapton hit Layla? A: Duane Allman! Both Slau and Mark Rufino had some valuable follow up to this. They referred to a documentary on Tom Dowd called Tom Dowd: The Language Of Music. It's an absolutely fascinating glimpse into the life of a talented and influential engineer and producer. One of the interesting things in the movie is where he plays the original multitrack master from the Layla session and he solos Dunae’s slide and the piano. It’s so exciting to hear the raw material out of context. Slau and Mark both say. "If you haven't seen this, run (don't walk) to the store and pick up a copy." Better yet, just click here to get one online! This week's winner is Jeremy North. Congratulations Jeremy, you're taking home a copy of Guitar and Drum Trainer courtesy of Ryan Smith over at GuitarAndDrumTrainer.com.
