Rootless is off this week for Passover, but we wanted to bring you an episode of How to Be a Jew we think you'll like. Like most Jews, the news of the murder of the Bibas children not only saddened us, but it also made us ANGRY. How do we deal with our own thoughts about the event, and the greater world's response as well? Dara Horn, a prolific author known for her book People Love Dead Jews (and the podcast Adventures with Dead Jews) as well as her work fighting antisemitism, joins us to deal with our anger and provide context for why we should be optimistic about the future of Jews. We also talk about her new Passover-themed graphic novel for kids, One Little Goat. How does a seder that won't end lead to a time-traveling adventure? Have a listen.
We're off this week for Passover, but we wanted to bring you an episode of Rootless we think you'll like. Rootless: Here's Why Dual Loyalty is Good for the Jews, with Rabbi Nolan Lebovitz The charge of dual loyalty has long been a key weapon in the arsenal of anti-Semites everywhere. But in his new book, The Case for Dual Loyalty: Healing the Divided Soul of American Jews, Rabbi Nolan Lebovitz of Los Angeles' Valley Beth Shalom argues that it's time to embrace the idea. He joins Liel to talk about why American Jews should be loyal to Israel and the United States alike, why that is a complimentary rather than contradictory idea, and why it's time, in the aftermath of October 7th, for Jews to reconsider the way they view their identities

America is now a nation of religious and cultural pluralism, witti a Christian minority. As a society, we are rapidly discarding the Judeo-Christian worldview and ethics that were the agreed upon norm of past generations. Biology, geology, astronomy, and psychology in particular have been used to sever us from our theological roots. Also, nearly uncontrolled immigration has accelerated us toward pluralism by introducing foreign religions with growing populations of adherents. At the same time, historic denominations have turned to human reasonings rather than the Bible for at least the past seventy-five years, producing leaders who no longer believe in the Christianity of the apostles. Evangelism and regeneration of the individual has declined. Rootless, independent churches have filled this vacuum, often collapsing or perverting the faith, leaving a legacy that strips believers of their zeal and reduces Christianity's credibility with unbelievers. The spiritual effect of all of this is to open the door to varieties of non-biblical behavior and spirituality. As a result, open demonization will no longer be a foreign phenomenon. Sachi Singh is the Founder and CEO of Rootless. With a decade of experience in international climate change solutions and a Masters in Environmental Management from Yale University, Sachi is well aware of what we're collectively up against. In seaweed, she found hope! Seaweed is one of the most nutritious foods on the planet, and actively regenerates the environment in which it is grown. Yet, most of us don't eat it on a daily basis. Sachi is trying to change that with Rootless and its hero product, The Daily Bite. Since their debut in 2022, The Daily Bites have been helping women and people support hormone health, sustain all-day energy, and nurture their gut health. Hard. Crusty. Unyielding.Rootless. Shallow. Burning out. Withering.Thorny. Distracted. Choked. Pressed.Good. Healthy. Vibrant. Thriving. What is this list of (mostly disturbing) words I've just uttered? Especially when the title of this episode includes, “A Gracious Reflection.” Well, it's a list that came to mind upon a recent encounter with the Parable of the Sower from Mark 4. I was struck by the inner dynamics described by Jesus. I've taken his four types of soil and created some reflection questions that you can use for a heart-check-in. _________________________________________________Follow Gem on Instagram and grab a copy of her new book Hold That Thought. The troupe and the were-folk set off towards the Rootless Evergreen. Tyler found a misty path that led them along a more covert route to the underside of the tree, Shadow Nemesis looked for loopholes to get the Doctor Deputy released from his oath to Tyler, and Del stole Shadow Nemesis's bag of holding so he couldn't use the doll's needle to steal one of their bodies. Having climbed up through the base of the tree, New Rogue was the first to emerge top-side, only to be confronted by two dead were-folk and three figures standing over them looking reminiscent of Tyler. Roaming, travel, wandering…all have been part of the human psyche since the beginning. Because we all have that God-shaped hole in us, needing to be filled with Him, we search. Some find God, and some don't. The sense of aimlessness and lack of purpose haunts some. We think of the classic novel “On the Road,” which is the story of two characters traveling the country. At first, the lure of freedom is fun to think about, but the truth is, if people don't fill that God-shaped hole with God, despair can set in. We are left rootless in the worst possible way. Colossians 2:6–7 says, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” Wherever you put down your physical roots, your spiritual roots are at least as important. In Christ, we are no longer wandering and discouraged. In Him, we live and move and have our being. If you feel that you're not anchored to anything, pour out your heart to Jesus. He will keep you close. Let's pray. Lord, your mercies are always in fresh supply. We thank you that you plant us in good soil and hold fast to us even when we wander. In Jesus' name, amen.

Can seaweed revolutionize our food industry? This episode, join us on a journey into the world of sustainable seaweed farming, exploring its immense potential for revolutionizing food systems and addressing environmental challenges. Our guest Sachi Singh is the founder and CEO of Rootless, and she shares her journey of transitioning from climate philanthropy to starting her company which is dedicated to promoting seaweed consumption. Sachi passionately highlights the incredible health benefits of seaweed, its rich history, and its unique role in regenerative agriculture. We look at the future of seaweed, from innovative seaweed-based recipes to the critical need for sustainable supply chains and consumer engagement. Listen in to learn how seaweed could be a game-changer in our quest for a healthier planet. Want to make your own Seaweed French 75? Here's Sachi's recipe: 2 parts seaweed based gin, 1 part lime juice, 1 part kombu simple syrup, 1/2 teaspoon of saline solution, 4 drops of sesame oil. Combine in a cocktail shaker and shake over ice for 5-10 seconds. Strain into a coup or flute and top with prosecco to taste. Garnish with dash of furikake seaweed seasoning and enjoy! To make the saline solution, combine 1 teaspoon of salt in one cup of water. Shake or boil to combine. To make the Kombu Simple Syrup, in saucepan combine 1 cup water with 1 cup sugar, and add one 5" piece of kombu, unrinsed. Bring almost to a boil then turn off heat and allow to steep until syrup is a pale green color. Allow to cool then enjoy. What happens when two people are deeply in love, but they want different things for their future? Can a relationship, or a marriage, work its way around fundamental things like having kids, career goals and what family should look like? Is love enough, and do we really listen when women tell us what they want from life? This week, I spoke to Krystle Zara Appiah about her debut novel, Rootless. In Rootless, we're presented with Efe and Sam, two people massively in love who get married to build a life together. We follow them on their journey as they grow and change in love, but also as they face huge hurdles when it comes to deciding how they want their life to look like. Certain that she doesn't want to be a mother, Efe finds herself living a life very different to what she truly longs for, and we follow the couple as they navigate through life's big questions. Krystle Zara Appiah is a Ghanaian writer and screenwriter, born and raised in London. She has a degree in literature and creative writing from the University of Kent. In 2020, she was one of forty writers selected for the London Library's Emerging Writers Programme. She also works as a children's books editor.Rootless is her debut novel. Thank you so much to Krystle for a moving and insightful conversation! I loved every second of it, and hope you do too.
