Native American Art magazine was the official magazine of the market, so we were on hand to hand out copies of the magazine, meet with artists and browse the art. The Pilgrim Kitchen The Harvest Celebration of 1621: Plimoth Patuxet Museum, Plymouth Massachusetts Presented by John Ota As part of the research for his book, The Kitchen, John Ota travelled to Plymouth, Massachusetts where he cooked a meal over an open fire with Pilgrim Foodways historian Kathleen Wall. On the 400th anniversary of the Harvest Feast between the New England colonists and the Wampanoag people, John will share his experiences of the culinary history, architecture, cooking methods and the dishes from the first Thanksgiving of 1621. John's presentation will include multiple images, 1621 recipes as well as truths and misconceptions about this favorite holiday occasion. Yes, there was turkey – but it was not the main event! Biography: John Ota has been involved with architecture and design since 1978. He has worked in architecture offices in Toronto, New York and Vancouver and has degrees from the School of Architecture at Columbia University and the University of British Columbia. He has also written articles on architecture and design for major newspapers and magazines across Canada. He is an active member of the Culinary Historians of Canada. Three years and  150+ podcasts later I figured it was time for a small break. Until new episodes return this Fall, I'll be posting compilations of some of my favorite Art Dealer Diaries moments.Part four features (in order) Native American jewelry hallmark expert Bille Hougart, museum director and curator Tricia Loscher, 3rd generation silversmith Sam Patania, Western painter and sculptor John Coleman, Jemez Pueblo potter and sculptor Kathleen Wall, and comedy writer/trade blanket expert Barry Friedman.

Kathleen Wall is a vibrant individual and well known Jemez potter who creates her figurine pots at Jemez New Mexico. She does wonderful figurines and masks, some of them being very large pieces. Kathleen explains her journey as a potter and how she got to where she is today and what it took to get there. It's a long hard road to be a potter especially when you're trying to do things that are unique and less traditional pueblo pottery, but Kathleen has triumphed. In fact, Kathleen was recently awarded the Living Treasure Award for New Mexico at MIAC (The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture) and was supposed to have a one-person show for this great honor. Unfortunately, it opened in April of 2020. Clearly, with all that's been going on with COVID-19, the show has been put off through 2021. Pandemic aside, Kathleen has mastered her art and I think anyone that enjoys raw passion and creativity will love Kathleen Wall.

Experience a slice of American history as two journalists share their perspectives on Martha’s Vineyard and parts of the American south. Author, Bijan Bayne,has been a summer resident of Martha’s Vineyard since childhood. He says that while most people may know about Martha’s Vineyard because of the Obama family and the movie Jaws, the Vineyard has a rich history within the African American community. Bijan tells us that the island is much more than a playground for the rich and famous and his stories will shatter some stereotypical notions many hold about Martha’s Vineyard. Travel writer Kathleen Walls loves sharing the historical stories she discovers during her travels. Her storytelling is truthful and authentic and she isn’t afraid to share stories about dark episodes in American history like the Trail of Tears or slavery. Kathleen says that often times certain parts of American’s history is overlooked because of shame and guilt, but even those dark episodes can help inform our future. Later this week, most of us will sit down to a Thanksgiving meal, just as the Pilgrims’ did after their first year in Plymouth. But Thanksgiving as we know it today is much different from the one the Pilgrims celebrated almost 400 years ago. Plimoth Plantation offers living history re-creations of that period in American history. One of their missions is to educate visitors about how the first Thanksgiving really happened. “For one thing, the first Thanksgiving was three days long,” said Kathleen Wall, a Foodways Associate at Plimoth Plantation. And it most likely occurred in late September or early October. The day that came to be known as Thanksgiving didn’t become a national holiday until 1863, under President Abraham Lincoln. “The Pilgrims are actually an afterthought,” said Wall. “First, there’s Thanksgiving to celebrate the nation together. And remember, Abraham Lincoln is President during the Civil War, so the nation is not together. And this becomes in some ways a northern
