Santa Fe Indian Market is such an interesting event and should be on every art lover's bucket list. This is the 103rd market and it's always the third week in August. They have a big ceremony to kick the weekend off and it's when they judge all the different art that comes in from all the artists.Medicine Man Gallery and the Sublette Family Foundation for the Arts provide the funds for the Best of Show award, so we get to attend this exclusive event. I wanted you to be able to experience the event and if you watch it on YouTube, you can actually see the artist win and the pieces that won them the awards. For these artists, winning can be such a life changing event. The winners have their name called up as the best of their respective classification, whether it's pottery, jewelry, weaving etc. then they allow the judges to decide who is the best of all. Santa Fe Indian Market Best of Show is an extremely rare accolade to have as an artist. This year is no different than any other. I am soooo happy I was not a judge. It would have been very difficult to determine who was the best of the best. I was a surprised when they announced the winner and was somebody who was participating in Santa Fe Indian Market for the very first time. To be honest, it was a remarkable piece that won and there's no question it was among some of the toughest competition in years. It's so much fun to hear and to see the artists and their families and how they react to winning. The joy you can see on their faces is second to none and well deserved. So I hope you enjoy this podcast. This is the Best of Show award ceremony for the 2025 SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market.

Welcome to Paisa Vaisa In this incredibly insightful episode, we sit down with a true titan of the Indian retail sector, BS Nagesh, the founding employee (not founder, as he humbly corrects) of the iconic Shoppers Stop. From being the first employee in 1991, even before the economic reforms came in, Mr. Nagesh takes us on a fascinating journey of how he helped shape how India shops. He shares the incredible story of launching the first Shoppers Stop in just 90 days before Diwali from a converted theater in Mumbai. Learn about the crucial early focus on experience with self-service and the challenges of convincing both customers and suppliers. Discover how the Indian consumer has evolved, the aspirations behind their choices, and the surprising lessons learned during the expansion across metro tier two three cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Jaipur. Mr. Nagesh also delves into the impact of e-commerce, revealing that Shoppers Stop was one of the first ecom companies in India. He shares his perspective on the future of omni channel retail, the role of shopping malls, and the crucial metrics for evaluating retail companies, emphasizing cash flow and margin per square foot. Beyond his legendary role at Shoppers Stop after 34 years, Mr. Nagesh passionately discusses his current venture, TRAIN (Trust for Retailers and Retail Associates of India), and his mission to give back by empowering retail associates and persons with disabilities. This is a must-listen episode packed with invaluable business wisdom, personal anecdotes, and a deep understanding of the Indian market.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

So for anyone who's never gone to Santa Fe Indian Market, I'll just give you the lowdown on what happens on the Friday beforehand. You have this event around noon-ish where they announce all of the winners for that year. Now, it's mainly for the artists and the press, but we were fortunate enough to have sponsored the grand prize, which is the Best of Show award and as a result we got to attend the ceremony. I asked SWAIA if we could film the event and release it as an episode of my podcast, got the all-clear, and now this episode is the recording of that incredible event.I mean, it's just like you're in the room. I would recommend watching this on YouTube so you can actually see their faces and the emotion in the room. The speeches which often have segments in the artists' Native languages are so compelling. I think it's so important to see what this world of Santa Fe indian Market means to the artists. Some of these people have worked for 50 years to get where they are such as the winner of the weaving category Isabel Gonzalez. It's such an amazing thing to see. The same goes for artist Dan Vallo, who won the Best of Show award. To see and hear the emotion, time, effort and energy it takes to do these  pieces... it was remarkable.Again, this podcast is the entire ceremony with all of the different Best of Classification awards. So I hope you take the time to listen (even better - watch on the YouTube) because you'll really get an insight into what it was like for those artists at that moment in time, and often winning these awards is genuinely life changing. The 2024 Santa Fe Indian Market Best of Show Award Ceremony was an incredible experience and I'm so glad to have sponsored the award for the last two years. We look forward to platforming and celebrating the incredible Native American artists for years to come.

This is our Monday show, in which we take a look back at the weekend and what's ahead in the week. Over the weekend we had a great chat with Nubank's CEO, which you can find here. Ok, onto the show notes!Stocks and Crypto: With some indices reaching fresh record highs, the good times are also rolling along in crypto where token prices are also on the ascent.Apple and the EU: Apple has been hit by a massive fine in the EU, which it intends to appeal. Spotify, which was the progenitor of the complaint, hailed the choice.New AI rules in India: The Indian government has a new tune when it comes to AI regulation. Big tech companies are now going to need its nod to launch models in the country, which could shake up how quickly new €1.84BN artificial intelligence products reach the massive market.Self-driving wins: Waymo is able to charge for its self-driving service in more markets, and can now do airport runs in San Francisco for a fee. I cannot wait to try this out.Other key news: Salla raised a huge pre-IPO round, and with the market improving, why aren't folks in tech walking with more swagger? We are back Wednesday, see you then! For episode transcripts and more, head to Equity's Simplecast website.Equity drops at 7 a.m. PT every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the casts. We should learn a lot about the state of software and hardware sales as last year ended, and what some critical tech names see for the rest of the year.Crypto: Prices are up in the crypto world over the last week. Coinbase reports this week as well, which should give us a feel for how optimistic the leading North American crypto company is feeling.Waymo: Some folks set fire to a Waymo car in San Francisco. Which is so goddamned dumb that I would pull my hair out if I had any.Bugcrowd: A $102 million round? You love to see it. Mega-rounds have become less common in recent quarters, so when bug-bounty-focused Bugcrowd put together just such a round, we had to talk about it.AI field trips: No matter where you are founded, you are going to need to keep tabs on the AI work going on in Silicon Valley. We are back on Wednesday morning at the latest! For episode transcripts and more, head to Equity's Simplecast website.Equity drops at 7 a.m. PT every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the casts. Today — ahead of the relaunch of our Wednesday episode that we discussed earlier this week — we have an interview to share featuring TechCrunch's very own Morgan Sung and Shruti Dwivedi, the co-founder and CEO of health-tech startup, Duly.Duly took part in TechCrunch Disrupt's 2023 Battlefield cohort, showing a global audience its contraceptive care platform that is initially targeted at the Indian market. Why India? The company cites a large, young population in the country with more than 700 million people under the age of 30. However, Duly also reports that fewer than 15% of Indians have access to sexual education. Even more, the startup notes that condom usage in the country is modest at best, and nearly half of young, unmarried women felt “judged when seeking contraception.”Put that all together, there's a massive market gap that Duly wants to bridge.Sexual wellness is not a small market, naturally, and other startups are active in the space. News broke late last year, for example, that Evofem Biosciences — which makes Phexxi, a non-hormonal contraceptive gel — found a buyer after financial struggles. Changes to American law regarding abortion make it clear that access to contraceptive care is critical for women around the world.A big thanks to Morgan for the interview, Mary Ann for the intro, and Theresa and Kell for the edit and production! For episode transcripts and more, head to Equity's Simplecast website.Equity drops at 7 a.m. PT every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the casts. This had to be one of the more interesting podcasts I've done.  It's with Helen and Richard Shull, and they own Esmeralda Turquoise Company in Nevada. They had come into my gallery and we were talking about what they do. It turns out they're miners/gemologists and they own turquoise mines that are scattered through northern Nevada. After a brief conversation I asked them to come on the show and they gave this wonderful talk about how you find mines, and what it means to be a miner in 2023.  They clearly love what they do. I mean, these are very intellectual, savvy individuals. Richard's a gemologist and Helen is a botanist, but they just love turquoise.I wrote a fiction book called Stone Men. That was kind of the ethos of what this was like. To have these two actual stone people who have dedicated their entire lives, eating, breathing, and living turquoise on the podcast, well, it made for a phenomenal episode. John recently passed and was such an interesting human being and I'm so happy that he took the time during Indian Market in 2018 to come talk to me about his life. You know, John was a guy who was intimately involved in the 1969 Woodstock show.He booked all the people he worked with, all the acts. You know, he was if you look at the Woodstock movie. He was a unique man who had multiple interests and never took himself too seriously. He had all these interesting people like Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison or Paul McCartney, at he Rolling Stones, all of these musicians he knew and worked with. I knew him for 15 years before he even discussed the Woodstock. The only reason he did is that I saw the movie and I saw him on the TV. His real gift to our culture and the Native American world was that he loved Native American material and tribal art and he, along with Kim Martindale, promoted shows. They promoted different shows that were the objects of art shows, both in San Francisco as well as in Santa Fe. ohn did one in Seattle as well. So, you know, it's sad when you lose somebody of his magnitude, but I wanted to replay his podcast so we could all bask in the wonderful beauty of John Morris.

Here's what we got into on the show today:Instacart IPO: We have a first price range for Instacart! And the company is going to take a roughly $30 billion haircut on the valuation it raised at back in 2021. Still worth north of $7 billion by our math , Instacart is set to raise a lot of money at a multi-billion price. Hard to get too worried about that. (Even more, the company's fully-diluted valuation range is, if we are doing our sums correctly, $8.6 billion to $9.3 billion.)Klaviyo IPO: Also taking a price cut is Klaviyo, which also dropped its first IPO price range this morning. It is taking a smaller cut in both absolute and percentage terms, but in aggregate the two companies show just how much room there is for 2021 prices to come down. What we worry about is what less-strong startups will have to endure, as Instacart and Klaviyo are both very healthy.Coinbase and India: Coinbase is not leaving India, contrary to reports. What it is doing is shuttering some accounts in the country. Crypto and regulation continue their long, and twisty path.Cheap, shared satellites: What raised $50 million and wants you to share a LEO satellite? You have a thousand different artisans show up in this big mix of culture and artwork. You have contemporary, you have traditional, all of it's made by the artisans. They all come together for this one weekend in Santa Fe. It's such a special event. I've been doing it since the early nineties and I would always bring my kids. Each of the children would get to pick out a piece to add to their collection. I highly encourage people to go and visit at least once. It's not only a special time for the collectors, but the artisans too. It's part of a tradition for so many families from across the country, Native artists that come and get to interact with collectors directly, which is wonderful because it's hard for them often because they may be living in remote areas.I've done a lot of podcasts over the last six years, and during those times I've interviewed lots of native artists that have participated in the Santa Fe Indian market. It's been a big part of their life and their family's life, so I figured it would be a great time during Indian Market weekend to rehash and take another look/listen to some of these different artists that we've had on the podcast over the years.I usually don't do podcasts that are in the moment. I like to do podcasts that'll be relevant during any time frame. In this case, I would like people to be able to go and visit these artists at Indian Market. So it's a wonderful kind of review of what Indian Market and Santa Fe as a whole is to so many different artists. We're also very blessed to be able to sponsor the Best of Show Award award for the next five years for SWAIA. I hope people go out and get to do what I've always done and love doing - connecting with and supporting amazing Native American artisans. We invite members of the media and influencers to take event photos and post them using the hashtag #santafeindianmarket.

I had Jamie Schulze say today, she is just a terrific individual and I just love her upbeat, happy demeanor. You can just feel in her something that is giving. She's the perfect person to be the executive director of SWAIA. Jaimie is someone who really cares about the artists and understands the process. She has the responsibility of promoting not only the art, but the cultural sensitivity of participants that represent over 200 different tribes. So it's a big organization to control and this is her first full year doing it. We talk about some of the upcoming things that will happen at Santa Fe Indian Market, which is this year during the third week of August. It was interesting to hear her backstory growing up on the reservation in Montana, as well how she ended up at SWAIA and her commitment to the organization. Medicine Man Gallery is going to be sponsoring the best of show award for Santa Fe Indian Market for the next five years, which is a big deal because I've been going to the event for over 30 years and I feel a strong connection to the artisans there. To be able to give back to that community is very rewarding on a personal level. All that being said, it was very fun to get to talk to Jamie Schulze and I hope you enjoy the podcast as much as I did.
