Federal fisheries regulators approved some limits on Western Alaska chum bycatch in the Bering Sea last week. The highly debated – and long awaited – decision aims to protect declining salmon stocks, a crucial food resource for Alaska tribes. The Alaska Desk’s Alena Naiden from our flagship station KNBA has this story. The North Pacific Fishery Management Council voted to set a Western Alaska chum bycatch limit in the Bering Sea pollock fishery. The council said the move will balance protections for Western Alaska salmon returns, while also allowing pollock fisheries to continue their harvest. Council member Nicole Kimball voted for the motion. She says it addresses those needs and reflects best available Western and Indigenous science. “I think it’s going to change behavior. I think it’s going to reduce Western Alaska chum bycatch … I’m sure, as per usual, nobody is very happy, but all of the discussions have really helped … inform the outcome.” The trawl fishery in the Bering Sea near the Aleutian Islands is focused on pollock, but boats also scoop up other types of fish. That includes chum salmon, some of which migrates to Western and Interior Alaska rivers and is a crucial subsistence resource there. But chum runs have been declining, leading to repeated fishing closures in some communities. Alaska Native Council member John Moller, originally from Unalaska, is a commercial fisherman. He says he is fortunate to put fish up each year and feels for those who cannot. “I know how important that is to me, how important that is to my family, and passing that on to my children – I get that. And my heart is ripped out, speaking with all of you that are living on the rivers right now that don’t have that same ability that I have living in Southeast.” The council voted to support a motion that sets a limit to Western Alaska chum bycatch. Exceeding that limit would trigger a partial closure. Rachel Baker is the Deputy Commissioner at Alaska Department of Fish and Game. She presented the motion. Several members who voted against the motion said it is not likely to provide a meaningful improvement for salmon returns, but Baker argued. “We’re at this table used to thinking about large volumes of fish, in tons … we heard in testimony that four fish were able to provide the needs for a potlatch.” The plan goes to the National Marine Fisheries Service next before it can be implemented. (Courtesy AMC) This weekend saw the recent premiere of Season 4 of AMC's award-winning detective drama, “Dark Winds” which takes place in 1970s Navajo Country. As Brian Bull reports, tension and resentment threaten the romantic relationship between two main characters. After Bernadette Manuelito quits the U.S. Border Patrol and returns to the Navajo Tribal Police Department, it looks like a carefree and intimate rekindling of her romance with fellow officer, Jim Chee. But Lt. Joe Leaphorn shares a life decision with Manuelito that will shake up the force, a secret which Chee inevitably learns. Feeling affronted and mistrusted, a schism occurs between the couple. Actors Kiowa Gordon and Jessica Matten talk about bringing this conflict to their characters. “Leaphorn's coming from a place of understanding the matriarchy system, and in order to protect this relationship dynamic, she doesn't feel like she's lying to Chee, she feels like she's actually protecting him from what he doesn't need to know. Y'know she's dealing with a lot of the PTSD of her just killing a man in season 3, and sometimes you just don't want to tell the truth right away because you might actually spiritually just drown, because it’s too much.” “And he is dealing with his own demons that he's been pushing away but now they've come to collect. And having to deal with that and trying to maintain your professionalism when you're working with the love of your life at the same time, and so there's a lot of dynamics being played out.” (Courtesy AMC) Meanwhile, an investigation takes the pair and Leaphorn to Los Angeles. Gordon and Matten say much of the filming still happened in New Mexico, parts of which resembled L.A. more than 50 years ago. New episodes of “Dark Winds” air Sunday nights on AMC and a fifth season has already been greenlit. The premiere episode of “Dark Winds” season 4 ended with a tribute to executive producer Robert Redford, who passed away last September. After pouring more than $11 million into a Rotorua motel complex for the homeless, Kāinga Ora has decided to tear it down and put the Fenton St site on the market. One year on since Kainga Ora began its turnaround plan, and it's now exceeding its saving targets. Tenancy satisfaction is rising, vacancy rates are lower, fewer tenants are in rent arrears, and Kāinga Ora is doing a better job of managing its tenants to support safe, respectful communities. The landscape of Social Security is changing yet again. As we enter 2026, six big changes will impact both current and future retirees. I break down everything from the new cost of living adjustment (COLA), increases in the earnings test limit, and updated eligibility requirements, all the way to shifts in the full retirement age and the solvency projections for the Social Security Trust Fund. You'll also hear practical tips on maximizing your Social Security benefits, how to prepare for what's ahead, and why it's more important than ever to have a solid retirement plan in place. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... [00:00] Social Security updates in 2026. [04:23] Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). [09:00] Social Security earnings and credits. [13:41] Social Security benefits timing. [15:31] Social Security cuts looming in 2033. Key Social Security Changes in 2026 On the show, you'll hear an overview of these changes, helping you to prepare and adjust your financial plans accordingly. From increased earning limits to the solvency of the trust fund, here's what you need to know. 1. Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA): A Modest Boost One of the most anticipated changes each year, the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), has been set at 2.8% for 2026—slightly higher than last year's 2.5%. This increase is designed to help benefits keep pace with inflation and is calculated automatically based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) (as explained by Ryan Morrissey ). For retirees, this means an average monthly benefit increase of around $56 for singles and $88 for married couples. However, COLA's impact can be offset by hikes in Medicare Part B premiums, which have risen to $201.96 for 2026. This nearly $18 increase represents a 9.6% jump—higher than the COLA percentage—reminding retirees to monitor both Social Security and Medicare in tandem for accurate budgeting. 2. Earnings Test Limits: Collecting While Working If you want to claim Social Security before reaching your full retirement age and continue working, new earnings test limits apply. For those aged 62 until they reach full retirement age, the annual earnings limit is now $24,480, with benefits reduced by $1 for every $2 earned above this threshold. If you're in the year you hit full retirement age, the limit jumps to $65,160. Exceeding this means your benefit will be reduced by $1 for every $3 extra earned. Importantly, once you reach the month of your full retirement age, these limits disappear, and you can collect benefits without reductions regardless of income. 3. Earning Credits for Eligibility To qualify for Social Security, you must earn at least 40 credits over your working lifetime. For 2026, you'll receive one credit for each $1,890 earned per quarter—a slight increase over last year's $1,810. Most individuals accumulate the required credits after about 10 years of work. Earning more than 40 credits doesn't increase your benefit, but working longer and earning more can boost your payout through the average indexed monthly earnings calculation. 4. Social Security Wage Base Increase Social Security taxes apply to income up to a set wage base, which in 2026 rises to $184,500. Both employees and employers pay 6.2% up to this limit, which has increased by $7,500 over the last year. If you're self-employed, you cover both portions (12.4%). There's no cap on what you pay into Medicare, with a rate of 1.45%, and an additional 0.9% for higher earners. These thresholds have not been adjusted for inflation, making planning essential for those with larger salaries. 5. Full Retirement Age: Incremental Shift The gradual increase in full retirement age culminates in 2026. Those born in 1959 can claim full benefits at age 66 and 10 months, while anyone born in 1960 or later sees their full retirement age rise to 67. This change marks the final step in modifications enacted by the 1983 Social Security Act. After age 67, there are no planned increases—unless Congress takes further action. 6. Social Security Trust Fund: Solvency Concerns The long-term outlook for the Social Security Trust Fund remains a concern. Per the latest trustee report, benefits could be cut by 23% in 2033 if Congress does not act. Recent laws have expanded eligibility but also reduced system inflows, raising questions about solvency. For now, we don't need to panic; proactive planning and staying informed are key. Regularly review your Social Security status and plan contributions, and consider how these changes affect your overall financial strategy. In this episode of Designed for the Creative Mind, I'm sitting down with Natalie Froom, founder and principal designer of Studio 180 Design. Natalie and I go way back—she came through the Interior Design Business Bakery shortly after the pandemic, back when she lovingly calls herself a "baby designer." Fast forward to now, and she's running a growing studio with a team, a refined process, and big plans for the future. This conversation is one of those full-circle moments I absolutely love. We talk about how Natalie's background in psychology and nutrition led her to interior design, how wellness and environment are deeply connected, and how her business (and confidence) evolved over time. If you're a designer who's still figuring out your niche, your process, or your next level—this one is for you. In This Episode, We Talk About: How Natalie's background in psychology, nutrition, and wellness naturally led her into interior design The connection between mental, physical, and environmental wellbeing (and why it matters in design) Finding your niche by doing the work—and letting your projects guide you Why Natalie focuses on busy, high-level professionals who want a true turnkey experience The importance of process over "just talent" when growing a design business How collaboration (not competition) elevates design and the industry as a whole Balancing beauty with practicality—creating homes that are both elevated and livable Why Natalie believes personality matters more than a rigid design "style" Growing from a solo designer into a team-based, scalable business Looking ahead: international growth, team expansion, and better work-life balance Natalie's journey is such a powerful reminder that you don't have to have everything figured out on day one. Your niche can evolve. Your process can be refined. Your vision can grow bigger than you ever imagined. What matters most is building a solid foundation, staying open to learning, and allowing yourself to grow into the designer—and business owner—you're meant to be. If you've ever felt like you were "behind," unsure of your style, or still finding your footing, I really think this episode will resonate with you. Watching Natalie step into her confidence, refine her process, and build a business that truly supports her life is exactly why I do this work. This conversation is proof that when you focus on process, collaboration, and intention, growth follows—both creatively and professionally. If this episode sparked something for you, I'd love for you to reflect on where you are in your own journey and what your next evolution might look like. Australia's billion-dollar beef trade faces a massive shakeup as China imposes a new 55 per cent tariff on imports that exceed strictly capped annual quotas. While the Chinese government claims the move will protect its farmers from oversupply, Australian industry leaders and the Federal Opposition warn the tariff increase breaches the spirit of Australia's long-standing free trade agreement with China. - Многомиллиардный рынок австралийской говядины переживает серьёзные потрясения после того, как Китай ввёл новый 55%-ый тариф на импорт, превышающий строго установленные годовые квоты.
AUSTRALIA'S EXTREME HEATWAVE AND THE SOLAR PANEL REVOLUTION Colleague Jeremy Zakis. Zakis reports on Australia's extreme weather, describing a heatwave moving east with temperatures exceeding 110°F, exacerbated by winds acting like a "fan-forced oven." He warns that recent rains fueled vegetation growth that will quickly dry into kindling, creating a "tinderbox" risk for wildfires within a week. Culturally, Zakis notes Australians no longer "tough out" the heat; instead, they use air conditioning early, supported by a "solar panel revolution." This widespread solar adoption has reduced pressure on the electrical grid, eliminating the need for public service announcements urging power conservation during these heat spikes.
Our Lord Jesus, insists Spurgeon, was not only a man of sorrows, but a man of joys. He knew joys in his humiliation, and he knows joys in his exaltation. He has distinct gladness as the Mediator. Bubbling over with delight, Spurgeon spreads himself in his introduction, delighting to think of the delight which characterises our Lord in glory. Only then does he turn, with particular concentration, to the substance of his sermon, packing in truth because he has less time than otherwise, condensing his study of the distinctive privilege and character of the saints' joy, drawn from their entering into Christ's joy. He holds fast to his text, before expanding upon it in the last few moments of his sermon, as—soaked with Scripture, and with a poetry born of piety—he considers the channels through which the blessings of God flow to us, and then soars into a concluding exhortation to God's people to enter into the joy which the Lord has secured for us. It is a truly happy sermon, and it breeds the kind of happiness which this world cannot offer, but which is received and enjoyed by all who know Christ Jesus as their God and Saviour, and the Almighty as their Father, through him. Are you seeking Jesus to worship Him—or mainly for what you can get? In today's Words From The Word daily devotion, Pastor Roderick Webster continues through Matthew 2:7–12 (KJV) and shows the difference between religious curiosity and true worship.Herod called the wise men privately and tried to deceive them—asking for details about the star and pretending he wanted to worship the child too. But God protected His plan and warned the wise men in a dream, and they returned home another way. What a reminder: God has ways of protecting His own that we can't always fathom. Then the star appears again—and Scripture says the wise men rejoiced with exceeding great joy. They came into the house, saw the young child with Mary His mother, fell down and worshiped Him, and opened their treasures: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Pastor Webster explains worship as humble surrender—presenting ourselves to Christ before we present our gifts. This devotion also calls us to check our motives:Am I seeking Christ for benefits… or for Him?Do I want joy without worship? Will I obey God's warning and guidance?May the Word of God be your “star” in a dark place, leading you to Christ with joy.✅ Like, share, and send this devotion to a friend or family member.#ChristmasDevotion #Matthew2 #WorshipJesus #WordsFromTheWord #PastorRoderickWebster0:00 Frankincense & worship0:36 Herod's private inquiry1:02 The deception exposed1:39 God protects His own2:17 The star leads again2:44 Exceeding great joy3:05 Fell down & worshiped3:35 Warned in a dream4:36 The Word as our “star”5:47 Joy of true seekers7:32 Gentiles sought—others ignored9:05 Worship before gifts10:06 What worship looks like10:37 Prayer & close

When we think of Jesus being introduced to the world as a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, we may not immediately see the strength, majesty, and incredibleness that unfolds with the birth of Jesus. Jesus may have come as a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, but He was fully man and fully God. He was God's only Son, and He was sent with a mission, a mission to seek and to save the lost.
