It took me a while to track Roy down. Roy Venkataraman was a name I heard often when I was growing up in India in the 80' and 90's. I knew of him as the Indian guitar player for Bob Marley's legendary band the Wailers. He is widely considered reggae royalty, at least here in India. Roy started his career in Bombay, playing with some of the most popular bands in the country and then moved to the U.S where he garnered a wealth of experience playing and recording with artists including Atlantis and Keith Benson. He also played with groundbreaking indo-jazz band Divya at some of the biggest jazz festivals internationally including the Jazz Yatra in India. Roy also did concerts and worked with legendary pianist Louis Banks as his main sessions guitarist for a few years. His own album Lifelines features world renowned musicians Clive Stevens, Randy Brecker, Adam Holzman and Rachel Z amongst many others. Roy was invited to join Bob Marley's Wailers band and toured the world with them for years. He has scored music for well known film-maker Govind Nihalani and toured with Jeremy Spencer, co-founder of Fleetwood Mac and has also recorded with various well known artists worldwide. Roy now lives in Sydney, Australia. He has shared stages with Simply Red, Third World, Xzibit, Maxi Priest, Sly and Robbie, UB40, Lauryn Hill, Julian Marley, Steel Pulse and countless others and is guitarist with widely popular New Zealand reggae band House of Shem. I had the privilege of listening to some of his new music that's an eclectic mix of jazz, sufi and electronica. The music you hear in the intro to this podcast is from Roy's album Horizontal Life. I caught up with Roy and we traced his multi decade career from Mumbai to Sydney. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Follow Tales from the Road on Facebook | Instagram Listen to more episodes on Spotify | Apple Podcasts | Google | Gaana |Audible Also check us out on our website tftrmedia.com Hosted and produced by Vikram Chandrasekar and Moving Pictures Media ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vikram aka The Concert Photographer is an internationally published concert photographer, videographer and podcast host.

This episode originally appeared on Ray's podcast, the Edupurist podcast. In honor of Charles' birthday, we have decided to re-broadcast this episode. The birth of this episode came from a twitter disagreement, in which two sides of a passionate argument (Keith and Charles) came together to discuss educational issues from their perspective. It was a powerful episode-- and we wanted to share it with the listeners. Please listen and share with the hashtag #HowAreTheChildren! And don't forget to wish Charles a Happy B-Day! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/8-black-hands-podcast/message
After 100 Spicey tweets on (7/4) between the ed reform folks and Dr. Keith Benson (Camden), I wanted to bring Dr. Benson on the show to discuss his animus towards education reform and corporate charter schools. He immediately agreed, and was super responsive. Dr. Cole felt a way about being dragged in the middle of smoke that he didn't solicit. Cooler heads prevailed and the two had a conversation that both sides (Ed Reform and Anti-Ed Reform) can be proud of (facilitated by yours truly). What I learned from both of these gentlemen in this spirited dialogue is that they both are passionate about their communities, and they both want Black and Brown Kids to learn. Although Dr. Benson was not converted into an Ed Reformer, his message and his truth is equally important to hear. Both participants are scholars and gentlemen for allowing me to probe, and for us to have a great conversation centered around our differences, and how we can meet in the middle on some things.
In this episode of Wine, Women, and Revolution (The Socialist Podcast) Heather is joined by Keith Benson and Johnnie Lattner to discuss some recent educational success. Geoffrey Cantor, John Brooke, Ronald Numbers and Keith Benson, contributors to the Science and Religion Around the World book, give presentations for the Ian Ramsay Seminar Series on 27th January 2011 as part of the book launch. The past quarter-century has seen an explosion of interest in the history of science and religion. All too often, however, the scholars writing it have focused their attention almost exclusively on the Christian experience, with only passing reference to other traditions of both science and faith. At a time when religious ignorance and misunderstanding have lethal consequences, such provincialism must be avoided and, in this pioneering effort to explore the historical relations of what we now call 'science' and 'religion', this seminar looks beyond the Abrahamic traditions to examine the way nature has been understood and manipulated in regions as diverse as ancient China, India, and sub-Saharan Africa. The book that will be launched at this seminar, Science and Religion around the World, also provides authoritative discussions of science in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as well as an exploration of the relationship between science and the loss of religious beliefs. The narratives included in the book demonstrate the value of plural perspectives and of the importance of location for the construction and perception of science-religion relations
