In the late 1960s, pioneering electronic musician Robert Margouleff and his musical partner Malcolm Cecil built something unlike anything the world had heard: TONTO — The Original New Timbral Orchestra — a sprawling, one-of-a-kind synthesizer system that would go on to reshape the sound of popular music for decades to come. A Grammy winner for his work on Stevie Wonder's Innervisions, Robert joins us in studio on the What Difference Does It Make Podcast to share the stories behind one of the most creative partnerships in music history. He takes us inside the making of Stevie's most celebrated run of records — Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, and Fulfillingness' First Finale — and reveals how TONTO's revolutionary sonic palette helped define that era. He also produced Devo's commercial breakthrough Freedom of Choice, one of the defining 80s music albums that helped bring synth-driven pop to the mainstream, and collaborated with Billy Preston and The Isley Brothers, cementing his place as one of the most influential figures behind the boards of his generation. It's difficult to summarize Robert Margouleff's career in a nutshell. He's a musical innovator thanks to him and his musical partner Malcolm Cecil's invention of a sort of synthesizer they dubbed Tonto's Expanding Headband. Tonto caught the ear of Stevie Wonder, who brought the guy's onboard to engineer/produce him during that peak 70s period (Innervisions, Talking Book, etc). This lead to further jobs with other legends like Devo, Billy Preston and Richie Havens. Music might be most of the story, but not all. He's made movies, sang opera, sailed ships, sang opera, started businesses and tons more. He tells his story well in his newly published memoir, Shaping Sounds. Robert joins us this week to discuss it all. You won't want to miss our chat or the book! www.margouleff.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

In Shaping Sounds, visionary music producer Robert Margouleff shares his stories of pushing the boundaries of musical innovation, art, and technology while helping create some of the most significant and influential music of our time.Beginning on the set of his first film, Ciao! Manhattan, with Andy Warhol superstar Edie Sedgwick, Margouleff captures the tragic beauty of New York's East Village and Warhol's Factory as he discovers a powerful new way to score his movie: the Moog synthesizer. This discovery leads him to meet a studio engineer who would become his long-time partner, Malcolm Cecil, with whom he would collaborate to invent the world's largest analog synthesizer, 'TONTO' (The Original New Timbral Orchestra). Together, Margouleff and Cecil used TONTO to help unleash Stevie Wonder's genius on his era-defining classic albums Music Of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, and Fulfillingness' First Finale. In legendary studios like Electric Lady and the Record Plant, Margouleff became a pioneering producer and engineer for artists like Billy Preston, Jeff Beck, DEVO, The Isley Brothers, and David Sanborn. A true sonic innovator, he was an early adopter of immersive audio and surround, developing new mixing techniques for home theaters that brought some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters to life.Shaping Sounds is so much more than a chronicle of music history. It's a story about creativity, collaboration, and artistic courage. Margouleff interweaves his personal experiences with the teachers, friends, mentors, and influences that shaped him, revealing how empathy and curiosity fueled his life's work. This memoir is a rich and entertaining narrative of a key period in music history that brings readers deep into the world of record and film production and will inspire new generations of music-makers and dreamers.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Robert Margouleff was there when some of the most soulful electronic sounds were EVER put onto tape. He's got a new audiobook out on Pushkin and it's just bloody great!!! Find a link to that HERE Here's the book blurb: Shaping Sounds is a memoir about creativity, collaboration, artistic courage, and the lasting power of music. The heart of the book is the story of TONTO, the world's largest analog synthesizer, which Margouleff and his partner Malcolm Cecil built. From the first spark of the idea to how it shaped the sound of artists like Stevie Wonder, DEVO, Beck, and more, Robert leads listeners through his life in film, music, and tech. TONTO is the ultimate gear story, one that was made in service of creating something deep and raw, which feels very aligned with your ethos to understand how to make sound right.  damn right! I LOVED this chat. Just blew my mind in so many ways. Hope it lands that way for you too :) Music from this episode comes from pod listener Dan Moore here's some bio stuff and a link to the BandCamp. Welcome to stop three on the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip. Tonight we're climbing up onto one of the most overlooked Sasquatch landscapes in the country, the Mogollon Rim of central and eastern Arizona, a two-hundred-mile shelf of stone where the Colorado Plateau drops off into the Sonoran Desert and ponderosa pine country meets red rock canyon. It's a place most people don't picture when they hear the word Bigfoot, and that's exactly what makes it so interesting.Because for as long as anyone in Arizona has been keeping records, witnesses have been coming down off that Rim with the same story. Something big up there. Something fast. Something that screams across whole canyons and watches camps from the tree line and throws rocks into fire rings in the middle of the night. We open the episode the way the Rim opens most of its stories, with a quiet camp and four experienced campers who realize, all at once, that the forest around them has gone silent. From there we build the history of the country itself, how the Rim got its name, why the Apache-Sitgreaves and the Coconino and the Tonto national forests stack together to make one of the largest unbroken pieces of timber and wilderness in the lower forty-eight, and how the Mogollon Monster legend traces back well before statehood, into the oral traditions of the people who knew that country first. Then we get into the encounters.A guide and his horseback hunters running into something on a ridge in the Apache-Sitgreaves that didn't react to them the way an animal is supposed to react. A family at an established campground hearing something walk a deliberate circle around their tent at one in the morning, twice, and finding a track in the duff at first light. A solo bow hunter sitting in a tree stand while something stands fifteen feet below him and breathes.A five-man hunt camp that loses a night to rocks on the canvas, a dog that won't get off the floorboard for a week, and a track measurement that no one in the group has been able to explain since. A Forest Service employee with thirty years on the Apache-Sitgreaves who heard something one summer afternoon that nobody at the office wanted to write down. And a couple driving home from Big Lake on State Route 260 who watched something step backward off the shoulder of the highway and clear a four-foot embankment in a single motion. We close with the question that always sits underneath these conversations. Why here. Why this country. Why does the Rim, of all the places in the American West, produce a Sasquatch tradition this dense and this consistent. The answer has to do with the geography itself, the food and the water and the cover and the canyons that no one has ever surveyed, and with the kind of witnesses this country produces, ranchers and hunters and Forest Service folks and law enforcement, people who know the difference between an elk and a bear and a man, and who keep telling the same story year after year.So pour a cup of something warm, pull your fire up a little closer, and come ride with me up onto the Mogollon Rim. Just don't go off looking for whatever's screaming across the canyon. It already knows where you are.If you've had your own encounter on the Rim, or anywhere in Arizona's high country, reach out. Every story matters, and this show runs on yours.Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? We want to hear your story.Email your encounter to brian@paranormalworldproductions.com for a chance to be featured on a future episode of Backwoods Bigfoot Stories.Backwoods Bigfoot Stories is a paranormal storytelling podcast featuring real Bigfoot encounters, Sasquatch sightings, Dogman reports, cryptid experiences, and true scary stories from the backwoods.Follow the show and turn on automatic downloads so you never miss a chilling encounter from the forest. Robert Margouleff is a man of many talents with a vast career in the music and entertainment industries. The Grammy Award-winning engineer/producer, studio owner, and filmmaker is also an early synthesizer pioneer, and was a customer, friend and collaborator of fellow New Yorker and music instrument pioneer, Robert Moog. From there, he met bassist Malcolm Cecil, and the two developed the first, and still the largest, multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesizer in the world, TONTO. With this experience and pioneering reputation, Margouleff played a key role with synthesizer programming for Stevie Wonder's "classic period" in the early ‘70s, as well as the 1980 album "Freedom Of Choice” by Devo, including its hit song “Whip It.” Robert has chronicled his vast career with a new book titled “Shaping Sounds”, which is due to be released on May 19, both in print from Jawbone and on audio from Pushkin. It's Heroes Month! For this 736th episode, cue up the William Tell Overture and get ready for the masked vigilante & his native buddy. That's because the topic of the first of 2 movies today is The Lone Ranger (plus, of course Tonto....and also, hi-yo Silver). Stuart Heisler directs Clayton Moore, Jay Silverheels and Bonita Granville in an enjoyable western with all the necessary thrills and constant danger. For film #2, I spent 13 minutes talking about Gene Autry in South Of The Border. While The Singing Cowboy didn't impress me that much, this DOES get he, William Farnum and George Montgomery on this channel...along with Champion the horse. So that's something. In any case, gear up for this first show in May, a month devoted to classic heroes just like the Ranger & Tonto. Well, Actually: just to clarify at the 17:45 mark that white men masquerading as natives on horseback wasn't the issue: it was that these fake natives rode with saddles. SAMBA JAZZ ODYSSEY - https://t.me/discor/6426COBB's POCKET - https://t.me/discor/5063IN YOUR DREAMS - https://t.me/discor/7405ON A MISTY NIGHT - https://t.me/discor/6965CHRISTMAS VIBES - https://t.me/discor/6631Фишка этого альбома - барабанщик и перкуссионист Portinho. Кроме того, струнные, аранжированные Дарио Эскенази, звучат в композициях The Summer Knows и A Lullaby for Benny.
