Calgary, Alberta Canada. Known for its western spirit, stunning natural surroundings, and growing metropolitan culture, Calgary is a place where tradition and innovation meet on the prairies. Whether you're a nature lover, a history buff, or someone looking to learn more about the true Canadian West, Calgary offers something for everyone.Located in the province of Alberta, Calgary sits at the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, providing a gateway to some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the country. The city is situated where the Bow and Elbow Rivers meet, and its elevated geography offers clear skies and beautiful vistas. Calgary is also famous for its sunny weather—boasting more days of sunshine than any other major Canadian city—which makes it a great place to enjoy both urban and outdoor activities. One of Calgary's most iconic events is the Calgary Stampede, often referred to as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.” Held every July, this 10-day rodeo and exhibition brings the cowboy culture to life, drawing visitors from around the world. With chuckwagon races, music performances, and a grand parade, the Stampede showcases Calgary's strong agricultural roots and western heritage while blending it with modern entertainment and family-friendly fun.Beyond the rodeo, Calgary has evolved into a bustling economic hub, especially known for its leadership in the energy sector, technology, and finance. The skyline is marked by architectural landmarks like the Calgary Tower and the Bow Building, while neighborhoods like Inglewood, Kensington, and the East Village offer vibrant arts, food, and cultural scenes. The city is also home to several universities and research centers, adding to its reputation as a center for innovation and learning.Calgary is a true representation of Canadian spirit—hardworking, welcoming, and proud of its natural beauty and cultural diversity. From scenic trails in Fish Creek Park to world-class skiing just a short drive away in Banff and Lake Louise, Calgary is a city that invites you to explore, discover, and appreciate. Thank you for joining me, Daniel Lucas, here on Geography 101. Stay curious, and I'll see you next time as we journey to another remarkable place on the map. Hosted on Acast. A quick shout out, this being the modern equivalent of a tip of the hat to Richard, who has made a significant donation to help me host this series. I was flabbergasted when receiving the Paypal payment. We have communicated over the years so this is just to say, thank you from the bottom of my heart Richard. When I'm next in Ireland, I promise to buy you a couple of rounds of St James' Blessing. What's this? A cacophony of digging? Must be significant. The date is somewhere in March 1867. A month after young Erasmus Jacobs had found an interesting stone near Hopetown near the Free State Border, but also near the newly formed Transvaal and Griqualand. The world of diamonds swirls with myth and legend, fiction, fact. Diamonds glitter with dangerous promise — alluring but transient in their fortunes, hard as truth, and just as capable of cutting those who reach for them unprepared. The rock that was found at Hopetown was placed on the table of the Cape Assembly shortly thereafter by Sir Richard Southey, the Colonial Secretary with the words “Gentlemen, this is the rock on which the future success of South Africa will be built…” Before Southey's dramatic flourish, the initial response from officialdom was disbelief. For as long as anyone could remember, and this went all the way back to the VOC in 1660s, there had been rumours of great mineral treasure in the north. A kind of disinformation campaign was launched by Jan van Riebeeck because from the time of his arrival he expressed belief in the possibility of a successful search for the traditional golden realm of Monomotapa. It was imperative to drum up more cash for the new tavern of the seas, and he was trying to convince the VOC of the exaggerated value of their new outpost. And women in South Africa were taking notice, which probably from a 21st Century point of view appears somewhat unlikely. Mary Elizabeth Barber had an important role to play in South Africa's geological science. The year 1867 was characterised by drought, and a severe depression made worse by reports that the completion of the Suez Canal would ruin all trade with the Cape. So it wasn't a moment too soon, so to speak, that Diamonds were discovered. Nearly two hundred years had passed since van Der Stel's memorable expedition across what he called de Groote Rivier, the Gariep, the Orange. IT was on the Orange River, sixty kilometres above its junction with the Vaal River, that a village sprang up. Hopetown. By all reports a thriving little settlement, with a number of farms dotted along the river banks nearby. The Koranna and the Griqua lived nearby, at the towns of Pniel and Hebron. Switch to 1867. Picture the scene, sheep and goats, Erasmus Jacobs were doing what Boer boys did, he was roaming the veld, playing on the edge of the river. Here were garnets with their rich carmine flush, the fainter rose of the carnelian, the bronze of jasper, the thick cream of chalcedony, agates of motley hues, rock crystals shining in the light like beckoning stars. Lesser stones, not diamonds, nor valuable gems. From one of these multi-coloured beds Erasmus and his siblings filled their pockets with stones thinking they could play a game of ducks and drakes. For the uninitiated town based gaslight grazer, ducks and drakes is the game of skimming stones. Whomever skims the stone the furthest or with the most hops, wins. Simple game, but when you have no toys, stones are your friends. Luckily for the future of South Africa, Erasmus decided against skimming the diamond, and took it home. There it joined a pile of other shining stones he'd collected like a magpie. It was odd, this stone, and his widowed mother Mrs Jacobs mentioned it to a neighbour, the farmer Meneer Schalk van Niekerk.

This week, host Avdhesh Kumar is joined by Newslaundry's Sumedha Mittal, BBC's Abhinav Goel and reporter Akansha Kumar. Abhinav presents an in-depth report on the true death toll of the Mahakumbh Mela tragedy that happened in January. While the Uttar Pradesh government has officially acknowledged 37 deaths due to the stampede, BBC's investigation has uncovered at least 82 fatalities so far. Despite government promises, many of the victims' families have yet to receive the promised compensation.Akansha uncovers allegations of police impunity in Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh. Her deep dive into police encounters in Uttar Pradesh reveal chilling accounts from families who lost loved ones in suspected extrajudicial killings.Several families allege that police not only carried out unlawful encounters but also attempted to silence them with bribes. Many of these encounters took place in the same location: Goonghwa Ka Bagh in Kaushambi. Affected families are running from pillar to post in their fight for justice and accountability.Meanwhile, Sumedha brings a sharply different story from Delhi. Since his appointment as Lieutenant Governor in May 2022, VK Saxena was known for publicly targeting the AAP-led government over civic issues. However, his stance appears to have softened following the BJP's rise to power in February 2025.Sumedha's report explores this shift in tone – tracing how the LG's confrontational approach has evolved and what it reveals about the changing political dynamics in the capital.Timecodes00:00:00 - Introduction00:01:04 - Beyond 82: The Controversy Over Kumbh Stampede Casualties00:31:20 - Encounter Raj in UP: A Deep Dive into Its Persistent Reality00:52:24 - Dynamics Between Delhi's LG and the Ruling Party: An observer's view00:59: 58 - RecommendationsRecommendationsAbhinavThe Unwomanly Face of WarThe Sharp Knife of MemorySumedha Rahul Gandhi writes: Match-fixing MaharashtraToday in Politics: Congress to make people aware of Rahul's ‘fixing polls claims' with processions across MaharashtraAkansha Among the Trolls: My Journey Through ConspiracylandAvdheshDr. Ambedkar: Life And MissionProduced and edited by Hassan Bilal and Tista Roy Chowdhury, recorded by Anil Kumar. It doesn't matter if you're first to an idea, if you don't execute it well enough, someone else can swoop in and steal your thunder before you even manage to throw your lightning. That's the case with Stampede: Racing, a battle royale kart racer where you start with 60 players and gradually whittle it down to one after reaching select checkpoints during a race. Sound familiar? It should, because it's basically Mario Kart World's Knockout Tour mode (and also way more similar to something like Fall Guys than Fortnite). Now, I don't know if Stampede was actually first to this idea, but I think we can all agree Knockout Tour refined the idea and made it into something that's tons of fun and will last in a way Stampede never was and will never get a chance to be.

As trade tensions ease and the headline economic data eases recession fears, a new bull market is picking up speed led by what Bank of America Securities calls the "Bro Billionaire Basket of Stocks", including Palantir, Nvidia, Coinbase and Bitcoin. Proximity to power is everything under this administration and in this stock market, and offenders like Tesla get punished when they cross the lines at Pennsylvania Ave. Plus, Silver prices hit a 13-year high as the Gold to Silver ratio narrows, signaling a new bull market in commodities, especially if the tariff truces stick. Grab the dice and watch out for monkeys, because we're diving headfirst into the stampede of sound, spectacle, and emotional storytelling that is Jumanji (1995). It's a jungle-in-a-box, people! Vines through the ceiling, carnivorous plants in the kitchen, and a board game that makes Monopoly look like a nap. Robin Williams swings in as a man-child with jungle PTSD, Bonnie Hunt brings the therapy and the sarcasm, and two traumatized kids have to survive a suburban safari of crocodiles, monsoons, and—you guessed it—giant freakin' mosquitoes. Roll those dice, face your fears, and join us as we crack open this wild '90s time capsule—because in Jumanji, the only way out… is through. Did you enjoy the episode? Thank you. Many thanks to all the new subscribers who have joined this week, both paid and unpaid. I put this video of my recent North Sea Oil piece up on YouTube, X et al and it generated something of a flurry. So welcome. I hope you both enjoy and benefit from The Flying Frisby. Before we get started I just wanted to note that Comstock Lode seems to be catching a nice tail wind, which is good. Enjoy the ride. The AGM is later today for the keener of you out there. But we are looking at bitcoin today, and exploring an alternative way to invest in it.I'm going through one of those phases where I feel like I don't own enough bitcoin. So I've bought more. And I've bought it in my SIPP - UK-speak for my retirement account.I'll explain how in a second.Let's just have a quick look at the bitcoin price, and note that we are once again breaking out to new highs.I know it feels like you are late to the bitcoin story, and yes we all wish we bought it at $10, when we first heard about it. But we didn't. We are where we are, and this story is a long way from being over. The next chapter in the odyssey is corporate adoption, and that story is just getting started.I explained the bitcoin corporate treasury model a fortnight ago here, and I've made the article freely available to all, so please take a look, but the TLDR is this.Following a template set by billionaire genius Michael Saylor, more and more companies are converting their treasuries to bitcoin as a means to store value and escape currency debasement. Not only that, they are issuing paper—stock, debt, convertible notes—and using the capital raised to buy more bitcoin. In effect, they are creating fiat money from nothing—it is a debt-based system, after all—and using it to buy a finite digital resource (one that, of course, cannot be created through debt). Many are scratching their heads and saying, “How can this be? It's not possible! It's a bubble.”What Saylor is actually doing, among other things, is exposing the flaws of debt-based fiat currency. There are now some 70 companies employing this strategy. This will eventually be a stampede, which I urge you to front-run. Corporations have much deeper pockets than private investors, meaning this latest cycle in bitcoin's mass adoption could become a mega mania.Shareholders welcome dilution if it means more bitcoin. The problem of corporate dilution has been flipped on its head. Once, if a company issued 20% more stock, you would expect the stock to fall by a concomitant amount to reflect the dilution. But if you're using paper to buy bitcoin, the reverse applies. You can't dilute enough. The purpose of a bitcoin treasury company is to acquire as much bitcoin as possible on behalf of all shareholders, by whatever means. Here is a case in point.Japanese hotel company Metaplanet (3350:TYO) had a small chain of low-budget hotels across Southeast Asia. Covid decimated the business, and it never fully recovered.A year ago, seeking a new direction, CEO Simon Gerovich began copying the Saylor model and started using his cash flow to buy bitcoin, then he began issuing debt. Since spring 2024, when the company began its strategy, the stock has risen thousands of percent from below ¥20 to north of ¥1,000. Last year, it was one of the best-performing companies in the world, if not the best. How about this for a chart? In the time that bitcoin has risen 60%, Metaplanet has risen more than 7,000%. (Saylor's Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) has also outperformed bitcoin. Bitcoin treasury companies give you gearing). With its crap currency and suppressed bond yields, bitcoin is an obvious place for Japanese investors to put their capital, except the government has got in the way.As with the UK, dumb regulations make it very hard for Japanese investors to buy bitcoin directly. (This came as a result of Mt. Gox, the first bitcoin exchange, which went bust after being hacked in 2013-14). To give you an idea how ponderous things are, to register with a bitcoin exchange in Japan , regulators demand you get a letter by snail mail to verify your address. Nuts. What's more, when the Japanese sell, they must pay capital gains tax at 55%.But Metaplanet is a Tokyo-listed company, so investors are buying that instead in their retirement accounts and via their brokers. Far less hassle. Just as, back in 2023, I urged UK readers to buy Strategy as a way to play bitcoin (we are up around 1,000%), Metaplanet has become Japan's bitcoin vehicle—indeed, much of Asia's.For several days in a row, the company has gone limit-up, and trading has been halted. The mother of all short squeezes seems to be taking place. It's the most shorted stock in all of Japan - and the short sellers are struggling to cover. This bubble has, quite literally, been caused by state regulation. We wouldn't be in this situation if it was easy to buy bitcoin. It's enough to make you a libertarian. It's amazing that both Japan and the UK were at the vanguard in bitcoin's early days. Satoshi Nakamoto had a Japanese name and used British English. Now we are both retarded (in both the old sense of the word and the new). How to profit from the maniaIn the UK, Avis-listed The Smarter Web Company (ISIN: GB00BPJHZ015) is now following suit, as several readers have pointed out to me (thank you). It's gone from 5p to 45p in a month. Currently, The Smarter Web Company has a market cap of £72 million, while it holds only £3 million in bitcoin (rounded numbers). Insane, you might think. Probably.Bitcoin Treasury Companies are outperforming bitcoin. They are the new sh*tcoins. So which bitcoin treasury company have I gone for? Here is how I am playing all this.
