Navigating Parole Obligations: What You Need to KnowDo you need to inform your parole officer about contact with law enforcement, especially if you're nearing the end of your parole in a different county or state? The conversation focuses on distinguishing between terms like probation and parole (and their modern equivalents, such as community control and post-release control in Ohio) while exploring the complexities of compliance across jurisdictions.Key takeaways:Always Review Your Parole Terms: Nearly all parole agreements require you to notify your parole officer of any law enforcement contact, regardless of how close you are to completing your term 02:50.Violations Must Be Filed Before Parole Ends: Action for parole violations generally must occur before your parole term expires—post-termination, the window to file a formal complaint closes 04:03.Seek Legal Counsel Early: Instead of taking risks or relying on “not getting caught,” consult a lawyer promptly to navigate any complex or ambiguous situations that may arise 05:04.FAQ's about paroleWhat is the difference between probation, parole, community control, and post-release control in Ohio?In Ohio, probation is now called community control and applies when a judge suspends prison and oversees you outside of incarceration, while parole (now called post-release control) starts after you serve prison time and are released under supervision. Each has different terms, but they all involve strict conditions and possible return to prison for violations [01:25, 02:04].Do you have to tell your parole officer if police question you, even if your parole is almost over?Yes, almost every parole (or probation/community control) condition requires reporting all law enforcement contact to your parole officer, no matter how close you are to finishing parole or where you are located [03:02, 03:14].What should someone do if they're unsure about reporting law enforcement contact while on parole? The best approach is to get a lawyer for specific legal advice, as ignoring the obligation can risk parole revocation, and authorities often check with parole officers before or after law enforcement contact occurs [05:04, 05:10].Got a question you want answered on the podcast?
A convicted killer with thirty-six institutional conduct violations — guilty on thirty-two — and a family that still insists she doesn't belong there. Mackenzie Shirilla was found guilty of killing Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan after driving her car into a building at close to a hundred miles an hour in Strongsville, Ohio. Every court that has reviewed the case has upheld the conviction. And her parents have not accepted a single word of it.Her car's data recorder told investigators everything Shirilla wouldn't. Full accelerator. No braking. A direct trajectory into a commercial structure. Before the crash, a family friend heard Shirilla screaming she would wreck the car with Russo inside. Days before the fatal night, she drove to the same dead-end road. Prosecutors later introduced decoded prison calls showing Shirilla and her mother Natalie had developed a fabricated language to communicate on monitored lines. In one decoded exchange, according to prosecutors, Shirilla discussed telling police she'd had a seizure — a claim that became the centerpiece of her defense at trial. The prison record since conviction tells its own story. Natalie Shirilla was captured on a recorded call telling her daughter that rehabilitation is for “actual criminals.” She called the Russo family “evil.” Steve Shirilla appeared in a Netflix documentary, said on camera he was fine with his daughter's substance use, and lost his teaching position at a Catholic school. A fellow inmate described Mackenzie as showing no remorse and compared her to Regina George. The Ohio Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal. Parole eligibility begins in 2037. Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer and retired FBI Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program Chief Robin Dreeke examine what this family dynamic reveals about the person at the center of it.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
Steven Trevino grew up battling opiate and pill addiction — and when the money ran out he made a desperate decision that changed everything. He tried to rob a bank. Then a civilian. He got caught by state police and then the feds — and ended up spending over three years in Texas state and federal prisons. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, he opens up about what surviving Texas prisons really looked like — race fights gang threats and being targeted for refusing to fall into prison politics. He rolled with the Paisas and navigated one of the most dangerous environments imaginable. Then came 20 days in segregation after a prison fight — and the spiritual awakening nobody saw coming. He came out of that cell a completely different person. Released in 2020 with nothing — no license no car and strict parole conditions — he built himself back from absolute zero. And he did it by starting a business called I Scoop Poop — your dog's business is his business. _____________________________________________ #BankRobbery #truecrimecommunity #prison _____________________________________________ Connect with Steven Trevino: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/steven.trevino.3572/ Website: https://www.iscooppoopdfw.com/ _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Intro: From Top Salesman to Federal Prison 03:35 How Sales Success Fueled My Addiction 05:55 Hooked on Prescription Pills 09:02 Heroin Addiction & My First Rehab 13:13 Rock Bottom: Losing My Job, Seizures & Crime 16:01 The Botched Robberies That Got Me Arrested 21:22 Facing Federal Charges & Real Prison Time 23:31 Surviving Racial Politics Behind Bars 26:06 Prison Fights & How I Made Peace 32:32 Solitary Confinement & Finding Faith 40:32 Divorce & Reinventing Myself in Prison 49:01 Parole, Transition & the Politics of Getting Out 58:01 Walking Out: Rebuilding Life From Zero 01:03:03 Starting My First Business After Prison 01:11:19 Love, Relationships & Redemption 01:14:47 Scaling the Business & Learning to Win 01:27:01 A Second Federal Case & the Lessons It Taught Me 01:29:29 The Biggest Lessons From It All 01:33:01 Faith, Contentment & Final Thoughts _____________________________________________ To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/LockedInWithIanBicka Learn more about your ad choices.

Mackenzie Shirilla's parole eligibility date is September 2037. Her institutional record at the Ohio Reformatory for Women raises substantial questions about whether that date will produce a different outcome than continued incarceration. In under three years of imprisonment, Shirilla has accumulated thirty-six conduct violations — guilty findings on thirty-two. Documented infractions include unauthorized medication, altered prison-issued clothing, contraband possession, and refusal of work assignments. The most notable entry involves more than one hundred video visits conducted with a former inmate who was not an approved visitor, performed under another individual's name. Shirilla has declined participation in institutional rehabilitation programs. On recorded prison calls, she has characterized herself as the third person harmed in what she continues to describe as a car accident. She has expressed her intention to pursue work as a life coach upon release.Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis examines the parole board's evaluative framework. Ohio's parole system weighs institutional conduct, program participation, demonstrated accountability, and risk assessment. An inmate who refuses rehabilitation, accumulates violations at this rate, and maintains a characterization of the offense inconsistent with the court's findings presents a specific profile that parole boards are structured to evaluate — and typically to deny. The family dimension introduces additional complications. Prosecutors decoded calls in which the defendant and her mother Natalie communicated in a fabricated language designed to circumvent monitoring. In one decoded exchange, the defendant allegedly proposed telling law enforcement she experienced a seizure prior to the crash. Those communications were admitted as evidence at trial. Natalie Shirilla was separately recorded characterizing the family of victim Dominic Russo as "evil people." Steve Shirilla's contract at Mary Queen of Peace School was not renewed by the Diocese of Cleveland following his appearance in Netflix's The Crash, during which he expressed comfort with his daughter's substance use.Faddis examines whether the family's public statements and recorded communications are actively undermining the defendant's prospects, what legal exposure Natalie faces, and whether Shirilla's current trajectory makes the 2037 date functionally meaningless.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Two cases raising different questions about how the system processes evidence — one institutional, one forensic. Mackenzie Shirilla's family is generating a growing record on monitored prison calls that defense attorney Eric Faddis says the parole board will scrutinize. In the Anna Kepner cruise ship case, a federal judge stated the prosecution's evidence is not as strong as it appears, despite DNA odds of 120 sextillion to one.Shirilla has accumulated thirty-six conduct violations at the Ohio Reformatory for Women since her August 2023 conviction, with guilty findings on thirty-two. Her father Steve's teaching contract at a Cleveland Catholic school was not renewed following his appearance in a Netflix documentary. Her mother Natalie was recorded on a prison call referring to the Russo family as "evil people." Prosecutors decoded separate calls in which Mackenzie and Natalie used a fabricated language to circumvent monitoring, including an exchange about claiming Shirilla had a seizure. In the Kepner case, a hundred and forty-five pages of unsealed transcript from a detention hearing placed the government's complete theory on the public record before a September trial. The DNA match points at Timothy Hudson, but an FBI agent testified he cannot connect it to cause of death. Magistrate Judge Torres stated he would not call the government's case strong and characterized it as "a much closer call."Faddis provides legal analysis on the parole implications of Shirilla's institutional record and her family's public conduct, Natalie's potential legal exposure, and the evidentiary gap between DNA identification and proof of cause of death in the Kepner prosecution.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Mackenzie Shirilla has accumulated thirty-six conduct violations at the Ohio Reformatory for Women since her August 2023 conviction — guilty findings on thirty-two. Her institutional file includes unauthorized medication, contraband, altered clothing, refusal of work assignments, and more than a hundred video visits with an unapproved released former inmate conducted under a false identity. Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis examines what this record means for her September 2037 parole eligibility.Shirilla was convicted of killing Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan after driving her vehicle into a brick building at approximately a hundred miles an hour in Strongsville, Ohio, in July 2022. She is serving two concurrent sentences of fifteen years to life.Recorded calls obtained from the institution reveal Shirilla referring to herself as the third victim, rejecting rehabilitation programs, and discussing plans to become a life coach after release. On calls she is aware are monitored, she has made statements about the town of Strongsville and expressed no acknowledgment of responsibility for the deaths of Russo and Flanagan.Faddis provides analysis of how parole boards assess institutional conduct, what weight individual violations carry in a hearing, and whether an inmate's refusal to engage with rehabilitative programming affects the board's calculus. He also addresses whether recorded statements made on monitored prison calls can be introduced and weighed against the inmate at a future parole proceeding.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?

Mackenzie Shirilla's legal options are essentially gone. The conviction stands. The appeals are exhausted. The post-conviction petition was denied. She's serving fifteen years to life and won't see a parole board until 2037. So the question shifts from "can she win legally" to "what does she do now" — and criminal defense attorney Bob Motta says the answer to that question matters more than most people realize. The Netflix documentary put her back in the public eye, and the result was mixed at best. She came across as remorseful on camera, but a fellow inmate immediately undercut that image. Her pre-crash social media — the TikTok persona, the image obsession — is still circulating and being used to characterize her. The families remain publicly active and opposed to any leniency. And her consistent claim of memory loss, whether true or not, gives a parole board nothing to work with.Parole boards don't just look at the crime. They look at what you've done since. Accountability. Growth. Rehabilitation. Evidence that you understand the impact of what happened. "I don't remember" doesn't check any of those boxes — even if it's the truth.Bob Motta has advised clients on post-conviction strategy throughout his career. He examines what Mackenzie should be doing inside prison right now — the programs, the accountability posture, the decisions about public exposure — and whether there's a realistic path to parole for someone whose public image has become as much of a prison as the facility she's in.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
