Emily and Ky have been sitting on this secret shorty for a while now, but with Valentine's Day barely a week away, and Ky cooling her heels in Mexico, this is the perfect time to share it! Let this be a cautionary tale for all event planners...if it's a match making event...you gotta mind your ratios. Maybe like, consult someone on how you match people?? And perhaps most importantly, if you don't have any dippers, don't put out the hummus.

This episode explores thorn bugs (treehoppers), tiny true bugs that mimic plant parts with exaggerated pronotums—spines, horns, and crests—that make them look like thorns, seed pods, or broken twigs. You'll learn about their unusual anatomy, incomplete metamorphosis, communal nymphs, maternal care, and mutualisms with ants that protect them in exchange for honeydew. In this episode, I'm joined by Lisa Johnson, co-founder of Been There Got Out, for an important conversation about coercive control and high-conflict divorce. Together, we explore the critical difference between typical divorce conflict — which usually de-escalates over time — and controlling behavior that escalates, creating ongoing fear, instability, and exhaustion. Lisa is a high-conflict divorce strategist and a certified domestic violence advocate who has successfully represented herself through scores of court appearances. Her case was published in the Connecticut Law Journal and is now being used as legal precedent...something that's incredibly rare for a self-represented litigant. Her live testimony also helped pass Jennifer's Law in Connecticut, making it the third state in the country to expand its legal definition of domestic violence to include coercive control: a form of abuse that so many people experience, but often struggle to name or be taken seriously around. Lisa and her partner, Chris, now coach people navigating high-conflict relationships, divorce, custody battles, and what many describe as co-parenting hell — helping them have the best possible outcome in family court and beyond. They also offer a weekly Legal Abuse Support Group for those dealing with narcissistic opponents in legal matters. Lisa explains how coercive control can include manipulation, financial abuse, and legal abuse, often carried out in quiet, passive ways that are easily misunderstood or minimized. The episode sheds light on why some individuals never "cool down," how the legal system can be used as a tool of control, and why patience and better communication are not enough in these situations. Domestic violence doesn't always leave bruises. It can look like creating fear through quiet control, financial strain, or legal pressure. THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT has jumped headlong into 2026 with the January 16 release of their first-ever live album, LIVE FROM SUFFOCATE CITY via Better Noise Music. To coincide with the album, the band is bringing the track Stay Weird to cinematic life as well.“‘Stay Weird' has always been our love letter to the beautifully strange souls who've supported this band from day one,” declares frontman Lee Jennings. “Hearing The Coffin Crew scream it back at us in Atlanta during our Suffocate City Town Hall Meeting was unreal. That night captured everything we stand for—individuality, belonging, and the freedom to be exactly who you are. I'm beyond excited that this live album lets the world feel that energy.”On LIVE FROM SUFFOCATE CITY, fans are invited to step inside the chaos and catharsis of THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT's first-ever Suffocate City Town Hall Meeting, captured live from their sold-out hometown show at The Masquerade in Atlanta, GA in 2025. The exclusive Blu-ray documents the band's legendary performance in front of a packed house of diehard fans. It's a thrilling night of raw emotion, high-energy theatrics, and fan-favourite anthems.Frontman Jennings joined HEAVY to tell us more. We start by asking why now is the right time to release a live album."I don't know…," he measured. "I think I just wanted something… I wanted something when we were ready, right? Because a lot of bands don't even do live records any more, and for me, growing up, that was such a big thing. I wanted that. I wanted to see a band live. And especially our band, we're very, very theatrical and over the top. So I wanted to bring that on stage and show it to everyone."In the full interview, Lee discussed the upcoming release of Live from Suffocate City in greater detail, highlighting the challenges of producing a live record that authentically captures the atmosphere of their performances, including audience interactions and background sounds. He expressed a desire to evolve the set list by focusing on songs that resonate with his current emotions, despite potential backlash from fans regarding the removal of older tracks. The conversation also covered plans for an upcoming concert where they will perform the album in its entirety, accompanied by a Blu-ray release featuring dynamic footage filmed with 12 cameras. Lee shared insights on the band's success following the release of Greetings from Suffocate City in September 2024, mentioning plans for a potential tour in Australia and the challenges of touring while emphasizing their commitment to engaging with fans and expanding their international presence and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In this episode of Half Hour, we unpack Masquerade, the immersive revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera now running in New York City. We break down the concept of the experience, how the story is structured and guided through multiple spaces, and the way the production uses intimacy to bring audiences inside the Paris Opera House. We discuss the interaction between cast and audience, from guided movement through the building to moments of direct engagement with performers, as well as the sound, orchestrations, and how the familiar score lands in this new format. We also examine Diane Paulus's direction, the scenic and lighting design by Scott Pask and Ben Stanton, Emilio Sosa's costumes, and the special effects that define this large-scale immersive environment. The conversation highlights individual performances by company members such as Clay Singer, Riley Noland, Betsy Morgan, Francisco Javier González, and Tia Karaplis, while reflecting on our experience navigating the show and what this staging suggests about the production's future. Carnevale is just around the corner, so let's talk about it! When is it? What is it? Well, that all depends on where you are. In Venice, Carnevale means Venetian masks, costumes, and comedy. Near Turin in Ivrea, it means historical, and very sticky, orange fights (yep, the citrus fruit). Wherever you are, Carnevale means festive food and a party. Have you ever joined a sisterhood, mentorship, or spiritual empowerment group that promised deep connection—but over time, you started feeling more lost, more muted, and more disconnected from your real life?In this episode of The Illuminated Woman, I'm sharing a vulnerable look at how so many modern feminine empowerment circles masquerade as community but lead women into spiritual isolation and identity erosion. Rooted in Proverbs 18:1, I explore how these programs lure us in with language like “safe space,” “authenticity,” and “alignment,” yet often result in silence, sameness, and separation from truth.I share my personal experience of slowly losing my voice in these circles - adopting the group's vocabulary, dressing like the other women, even wearing the same symbolic necklace - all while believing I was finding my true self. But once I stepped out, I felt ungrounded, uncertain, and untethered. This episode is a wake-up call for the woman who has been craving real connection, but looking for it in the wrong places. It's for the one who knows something feels off, but hasn't had the words for it—until now. What You'll Hear in This Episode:Why Proverbs 18:1 is a powerful warning about isolation disguised as empowermentHow many women unknowingly give away their voice inside so-called sisterhood circlesThe Stepford Wives effect: why everyone starts sounding, dressing, and thinking the sameWhy these groups lead to spiritual and relational isolation—even from family and friendsWhat Biblical sisterhood actually looks like, and how it sharpens instead of silencesMy personal story of how I felt shaky and lost after leaving these groupsA prayer and reflection for reclaiming your God-given voice and communitySome journal questions to help you if you've been in - or are still in - these spacesIf this episode speaks to your journey—especially if you're recovering from false sisterhoods, New Age spaces, or performance-based spirituality—you're not alone. You're not too far gone. And you can rebuild, voice by voice, step by step, in the truth of God's Word. The Illuminated Connection Call is a free conversation where we talk heart to heart—no pressure, no agenda. I'd love to hear what's on your heart, where you are in your life and spiritual journey, and what you're sensing God may be stirring in you. Whether you're just beginning to question the New Age path, exploring Biblical truth, are already living a God-led life, or simply feeling lost and unsure—this space is for you. Madeline, Emilio, and Julian continue their seasonal cycle of Unorthodox Holiday Movies with a discussion about "Eyes Wide Shut," Stanley Kubrick's enigmatic final feature from 1999. Marking their first discussion about a Kubrick film, the trio take an appropriately late-at-night stroll journey through the many layers of EWS, including its touches of dream logic, commentary on class and wealth, and what the film has to say about observation and participation in potential acts of transgression, romantic and otherwise. Also along the way are nods to the film's admirable fake New York City, musician-specific considerations about gigs akin to one taken by character Nick Nightingale, and a shout-out to friend-of-the-show Jamie Homs, originally slated to be the guest for this episode. This story happened about 15 years ago when I and my group were all inexperienced and living together in university. We played all kinds of systems and settings and loved to play long-haul homebrews. At the point this story takes place we had already played many systems together and now wanted a go at the gothic noir Vampire the Masquerade setting with a 50/50 split of brutal combat and political backdealing. Before we take our leave, don't forget to subscribe to our channel, All Things DnD.
