snyopsis- Challenging the narrative on Palestine in this edition of our monthly Meet the BIPOC Press series : "The Encampments" documentary,  and its creators aim to push back against the dominant narrative on Palestine, highlighting the difference between the corporate media coverage and those who have no allegiance to money or corporations, and sparking a wider conversation about the world's first live streamed genocide. “The Encampments” co-produced by Macklemore, brings viewers into the anti-Gaza war protests at Columbia University and gets up close and personal with leaders including Mahmoud Khalil, the student negotiator currently detained by ICE in violation of a court's order. In this special episode in our series Meet the BIPOC Press, Laura sits down with Sueda Polat and Grant Miner, two of Khalil's colleagues in the encampments, who were suspended and expelled, respectively, as well as the film's co-director, journalist Kei Pritsker of BreakThrough News to discuss how the film came to be, and where the situation stands today as well as what's missing and who is misrepresented in commercial news. All that, plus a commentary from Laura on Columbia University's move to suspend four college journalists “being too close to the action.”“I don't really participate as a Jewish person, I participate as an activist and a person of conscience that is Jewish . . . There's a very insidious narrative that was basically, ‘If you're not Jewish and you're not Palestinian, then talking about this is strange. In July 1830, Paris erupted. For three days, workers, students, and veterans rose against royal ordinances that trampled the Charter of 1814. Barricades filled the streets, the tricolour flag flew once more, and the Bourbon monarchy collapsed. King Charles X fled, and Louis-Philippe—styled the “Citizen King”—took the throne. This revolution wasn't just a power shift; it was a powerful reminder that France's revolutionary spirit was far from extinguished. Level Up: From Kicking Cones to Removing Life's Barricades

Shark Theory

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 16, 2025 6:27

In this episode of Shark Theory, host Baylor Barbee explores the dynamic concept of overcoming mental hurdles, with a metaphorical twist on "kicking the cones" which he has popularized through his talks and writings. Beginning with an anecdote from a friend who leveled up from "kicking cones" to "removing barricades," Baylor sets the tone for a discussion on continuous personal and professional growth. The episode is a motivational plunge into self-awareness and the relentless pursuit of breaking past perceived limitations. The episode's key focus is on identifying and overcoming the mental blocks that prevent individuals from reaching their full potential. Baylor uses engaging analogies and inspiring tales to highlight how people often allow external influences and self-doubt to dictate their paths. Drawing on examples from iconic figures like Pablo Picasso, he emphasizes the importance of continual learning and self-improvement, crafting an encouraging narrative that urges listeners to challenge themselves and strive for new heights. Baylor concludes with practical advice on recognizing and dismantling "cones" and "barricades" in one's life, driving home the message that growth is a never-ending journey. Key Takeaways: Overcoming mental blocks is essential to achieving personal and professional growth. The journey of self-improvement is continual, as exemplified by successful figures such as Pablo Picasso. Identifying limiting beliefs imposed by oneself or others is the first step toward overcoming them. Growth involves replacing self-doubt with actionable steps toward desired goals. Constantly seek new levels of development rather than settling on perceived achievements. Notable Quotes: "The whole concept of kicking the cones in life is about recognizing the mental blocks that have either tried to impose or redirect or derail you." "There's always a way to level up. You should never be a master of anything." "Quit thinking you can make it to the top because the people at the top are finding new levels and new mountains to climb." "We have to start looking at the situations in our lives and say, hey, that might have been true at one point, but is that true now?" "The whole journey of life is just simply about growth. And if I'm not growing, I'm on the decline."

Join Dave and Wayne for genre television show news, a glimpse into what the hosts are watching, listener feedback, and analysis of the Apple TV+ series Silo. This week on the SciFi TV Rewatch podcast we discuss whether Knox and Shirly's kiss will amount to anything significant in the story, and Wayne is not surprised that Solo holds Juliette's suit hostage so she'll fix the Silo 17 pump. In our What We're Watching segment, Wayne begins reading Wool, and Dave sticks with Spartacus, but also finds time for the crime drama The Dublin Murders.  In Listener Feedback, Fred from the Netherlands mentions the relationship between Shirly and Knox while Alan in England throws out the idea that a silo model would be way cool. Alan in Missouri recommends Hulu's 2025 political thriller Paradise. Early Life & Musical BeginningsGary Kempwas born in London, where his passion for music and performing arts took shape early. Raised in Islington, he attended Anna Scher's acting school alongside his younger brother Martin Kemp. Though acting was an early focus, music soon became his true calling. Influenced by the glam rock and punk movements of the ‘70s, Kemp sought to create a new sound, ultimately leading to the formation ofSpandau Ballet in 1978.As theprimary songwriter for Spandau Ballet, Gary Kemp was responsible for some of the most iconic hits of the1980s New Romantic era. The band first gained attention in the London club scene, aligning with the movement's stylish aesthetic. Their breakthrough came with"To Cut a Long Story Short", followed by global hits like"True","Gold", and"Through the Barricades." Kemp's songwriting, blendingsoulful melodies, romantic lyricism, and synth-driven soundscapes, defined an era.Spandau Ballet's success was meteoric, earningmulti-platinum sales, Brit Awards, and worldwide tours. However, internal tensions led to their breakup in 1990. A high-profile legal battle followed, as bandmates attempted to claim songwriting royalties, but the court ruled in Kemp's favor as the sole composer.Following Spandau Ballet's split, Gary Kemp transitioned into acting. His most notable role wasplaying Reggie Kray alongside his brother Martin in the acclaimed gangster biopicThe Krays (1990). He also appeared in major films such asThe Bodyguard (1992) with Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston andKilling Zoe (1993).Though acting remained part of his career, Kemp never abandoned music. He continued writing and exploring new creative directions. In 1995, Gary Kemp released his debut solo album,Little Bruises, showcasing a more introspective, acoustic-driven sound. Though it didn't match Spandau Ballet's chart-topping success, it revealed a different side of his artistry. After years of silence on the solo front, Kemp made a powerful return withINSOLO (2021), an ambitious and deeply personal album exploring themes of fame, identity, and self-reflection. Tracks like"Ahead of the Game" and"Too Much" reaffirmed hissongwriting prowess and sophisticated musicianship.In2025, Kemp releasedFinal Destination, his most introspective work yet. The album reflects on hisstruggles with mental health, the impact of the pandemic, and personal loss. Having suffered fromanxiety and depression post-pandemic, Kemp has openly discussed how the experience reshaped his perspective on life, revealing that he now avoids watching the news to protect his well-being.Despite their past conflicts, Spandau Ballet reunited forsuccessful tours in 2009 and 2015, thrilling fans worldwide. However, tensions resurfaced, and lead singerTony Hadley permanently exited in 2017, leaving the band in limbo. While Spandau Ballet's future remains uncertain, Kemp continues tohonor their legacy through hislive performances, storytelling, and collaborations.Beyond performing, Gary Kemp is arespected voice in music history. He co-hosts the popular podcastRockonteurs with Pink Floyd's Guy Pratt, where they interview rock and pop legends, discussing the untold stories of the music industry. His deep knowledge and engaging storytelling make him an authority in British pop culture.FromSpandau Ballet's chart-topping success to hisacting career, solo albums, and podcasting ventures, Gary Kemp remains a truemusic icon. His ability toevolve, adapt, and create timeless music has solidified his legacy as one of Britain's most influential songwriters. WithFinal Destination, Kemp proves that hiscreative journey is far from over.#garykemp #SpandauBallet #80sMusic#NewRomantic #BritishPop #Rockonteurs#TrueSpandauBallet #GoldSpandauBallet#SynthPop #80sIcons #MusicLegends#ClassicHits #PopRock #MusicPodcast #BehindTheMusic
