Just to let you know, if you are looking for technology tips and tricks, this bonus episode does not have any. Next Tuesday starts back in with our regular schedule where the Tech Chef brings you all the latest and greatest restaurant and hospitality information. I met Fred several months ago and I knew immediately I had to share his story. Back then I didn’t even have this show up and running but he immediately came to mind as I started planning out my episodes. Fred Stokes, NFL Super Bowl Champion(Speaker, Author, Entrepreneur and Super Bowl Champion) Fred Stokes has a personal mission to positively enhance the life of every person who comes across his path. His down to earth personality and his uncanny ability to connect with people is what sets Fred Stokes apart from other speakers/athletes of his caliber…While attending high school in Vidalia, Georgia, Fred excelled in basketball and track. However, it wasn’t until his senior year that he decided to play football. As a result, Fred was offered a full scholarship to play football for Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga. under the legendary coach, Erk Russell. While at Georgia Southern, Fred played a vital role on two National Championship teams (1985 and 1986). Fred was only one of two players on his team voted First Team All-America after his senior season as an Offensive Tackle. Fred was drafted into the National Football League where he would spend the next ten years playing Defensive End for the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams, Washington Redskins, and the New Orleans Saints. Fred had the awesome privilege of playing in, and winning, Super Bowl XXVI with the 1991 Washington Redskins against the Buffalo Bills. In that game, Fred recorded two and half sacks, a forced fumble and recovered another. Fred’s Redskins teammates affectionately labeled him “Big Play Stokes” because of his knack for making a big play at the right time of a game. Fred is a highly sought-after Keynote Speaker, delivering his thought provoking motivational/inspirational messages on the main stage, in workshops and at weekend retreats. He is also a part of the Vistage Speakers Bureau. Fred presents globally for both live and virtual events. In addition, Fred has found time to write and publish his autobiography entitled “The Bridge That Brought Me Over”. Fred and his wife Regina have three boys: Lance, Landon and Luke. They have a great technology story to tell combined with a big technology announcement! You will hear all about it...
Former NFL player, Fred Stokes did not start playing football until his senior year in high school. In high school in Vidalia, Georgia, he excelled in basketball and track, but little did he know football would be his future. Fred received a full scholarship to play football for Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga. under the legendary coach, Erk Russell. Fred played a vital role on two National Championship teams (1985 and 1986) and was only one of two players on his team voted First Team All-America after his senior season as an Offensive Tackle. Fred was drafted into the National Football League where he spent ten years playing Defensive End for the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams, Washington Football Team, and the New Orleans Saints. Known by his teammates as “Big Play Stokes,” Fred went on to play and win the Super Bowl XXVI with the 1991 Washington Football Team against the Buffalo Bills. Fred is a highly sought-after Keynote Speaker, delivering his motivational/inspirational messages and author of his autobiography, “The Bridge That Brought Me Over.” What you'll learn about in this episode: How Fred's environment shaped his character and worldview Fred's experience growing up as a black man in Georgia with a single mother Fred's first encounter with racism as a child, and how it impacted him moving forward The pain and hardship that shaped Fred into the amazing human being he is today How to achieve the level of impact that we want Fred's leadership journey in the NFL How Fred continues to achieve success while overcoming personal hardships like the loss of his cousin who was like a son to him What we can do to bring more people together and affect conversations of change in these difficult times Resources: Website: lintbrother.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/fredstokes/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Lint-Brother-350130975810150/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bigplaystokes/ https://www.instagram.com/lintbrother Twitter: @fredstokes Never Fall Prey to Circumstance As a former NFL player for the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams, Washington Football Team, and the New Orleans Saints, it is safe to say that our guest, Fred Stokes, is not an ordinary guy. Fred won Super Bowl XXVI with the 1991 Washington Football Team, and he went on to continue his journey of intentional greatness in other areas after his football career was over. Fred is an accomplished motivational speaker, author, and entrepreneur. In this episode of Intentional Greatness, Fred talks about his mission to positively enhance the life of every person who comes across his path. He explains how his environment shaped his character and worldview, discusses his experiences with racism, and explains how he achieved immense success without becoming a victim of circumstance. Product of Environment Fred's mom gave birth to him at just fifteen years old. He grew up as a black man in Georgia with a single mother and the odds stacked against him. But in spite of the difficult hand he had been dealt, Fred managed to magnetize the good and put himself in a position to take advantage of any opportunity that came his way. His teachers, coaches, and extended family gave him the support he needed to succeed. And Fred was receptive to help and guidance because he was determined to do anything in his power to get his mom out of that difficult situation. Our environment shapes our character and worldview, but we don't have to accept everything it throws at us. Never Let Anyone Tell You You're Not Special Fred has an unbelievable amount of great stories, experiences, and advice, but with that also comes a lot of pain and hardship; even up until recently. Fred had to have conversations about racism with his mother throughout his entire life, and it helped him realize the value of his natural gifts and talents. If you have something special, you are not motivated by money and status. Fred never let anybody take that away from him, and his gifts drove him to greatness.
Derek Ciapala and Michael Stewart take a deep dive on former Los Angeles / St. Louis Rams wide receiver Isaac Bruce’s election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They also share their thoughts on the San Francisco 49ers’ 31-20 Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Derek Ciapala, Michael Stewart, and Brian Joanou discuss losing Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. Later, they break down which former Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams deserve consideration for the Pro Football Hall of Fame outside of Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt.
I've been introduced to #RaidersTwitter, so today's show art should go over real well....It's another Arif Hasan Friday here on Purple FTW! Topics covered include: the almost unprecedented level at which Linval Joseph is playing, breaking down which individual skills Derek Carr and Teddy Bridgewater are better at, how Bill "3x5" Musgrave has changed since leaving the Vikings, why Arif wants to marry Anthony Barr, and we go over Pro Bowl picks aka ALL IN FOR JOE WEBB.All that and other "I Dare Anyone To Do THIS to Zimmer" nonsense on this edition of the Purple FTW! The Gurley-Adrian Tecmo Bowl is upon us and we got our man Arif Hasan (@ArifHasanNFL) of The Daily Norseman and Vikings Journal in the house to chat about the upcoming, sneakily important for the playoff picture match between our Minnesota Fightin' Vikings and the Los Angeles St. Louis Rams.We talk about the clash of two great defenses, if Teddy Bridgewater can put together a complete game, Aaron Donald or Anthony Barr, Nick Foles looking like John Heder, is Adrian Peterson actually a hindrance to this offense? And who has the edge in all of the various running back attributes: Todd Gurley II or Adrian Peterson in his prime?Arif and I also theorize that Todd Gurley might have his "Adrian-William Gay" moment on..... The Minnesota Fightin' Vikings (5-2) currently have the 8th best record in the NFL and would be the 6-seed Wild Card if the playoff started today. The Los Angeles St. Louis Los Angeles St. Louis Rams (4-3) are currently the 7-seed. Which makes Sunday's game a VERY BIG F*$%@ DEAL!!!!We welcome in Will Horton of Rams Herd and the Turf Show Times to chat about the upcoming showdown Sunday at The Bank. Will Adrian-vs-Gurley live up to the hype? How will Teddy Bridgewater fare versus the ferocious Rams defense anchored by non-human Aaron Donald? How will Mike Zimmer shut down Nick Foles? Why is Tavon Austin somehow a better NFL wide receiver than Cordarrelle Patterson? Will Will still be a Rams fan if/when they move to Los Angeles? I also trade Kyle Rudolph to the Rams for Jared Cook. And then cut Jared Cook. #FreePruittAll that and other "Todd Gurley's Not Even 100% Healthy" nonsense on this edition of the Purple FTW! Gangster Squad (St. Martin's Press, 2012) the book is not Gangster Squad the movie. One is a detailed and thoroughly researched account of organized crime in Los Angeles and the other is a movie. If you are really interested in organized crime then you should read the book. Paul Lieberman has produced an excellent story of the gangsters and the police who tried to close them down. He presents both sides as real human beings – each with many foibles. This is the story of the growth of Los Angeles and the attraction of people from across the nation to the new world of sunshine and opportunity. Of course, the inhabitants of this city have the same needs for illicit goods and services as any other city and there is always someone who will provide the supply to meet the demand. Having said that, the distance from the East Coast to the West Coast, and the nature of the growing city, meant that LA was largely outside the control of the Italian mafia. It has its own characters and their own methods that reflect more of the brashness of Hollywood than the tradition of La Familia. The police who make up the Gangster Squad share many features of their targets – they just add a sense of justice and social responsibility. Besides being a great read, Gangster Squad fills a gap in the field by providing a history of organized crime that is neglected by the mainstream analysis. LA is a major city and its illicit economic story is equally as important as that of New York or Chicago. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
