On this day, 29 September 1909, the revolutionary Industrial Workers of the World union began the first of what became known as the free speech fights, in Missoula, Montana. Members would publicly speak on the streets of the town in open defiance of a law banning public speaking. When one speaker was arrested another took their place, including well known organisers Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, who was pregnant at the time, and Frank Little. As a result, the local jail was filled with no end to the stream of workers coming in to speak. By 8 October the council declared the IWW could speak wherever they liked and dropped all charges against members who had been arrested for speaking. This campaign would be the first of many similar free speech fights throughout the United States. The CopDoc Podcast - Season 11 - Episode 177Leadership Culture Under Pressure with Chief Brandon GurleyDr. Steve Morreale talks with Chief Brandon Gurley of Brookhaven Police Department about the career path that shaped his leadership, from dispatcher and detention officer to chief of a fast-growing agency near Atlanta. The conversation centers on how early frontline experience, intentional culture-building, and curiosity-driven leadership can improve policing outcomes.Gurley also shares how Brookhaven Police Department was built from the ground up, how he approaches command staff meetings, and why he believes policing often promotes technical experts instead of true people leaders.Key topicsIn this episode, Chief Brandon Gurley shares how starting as a 911 call taker and detention officer gave him an early understanding of stress, communication, and de-escalation.He explains his move from Paulding County Sheriff's Office to Sandy Springs, then into the startup of Brookhaven Police Department when the city incorporated in 2012.Gurley describes the challenge of helping build a brand-new agency, including hiring 54 sworn officers from 26 different metro-area agencies. He discusses why public information work, recruiting, and background investigations became important parts of his development as a future chief. He draws a clear distinction between police administration and police leadership, arguing that leadership requires vision, accountability, and the willingness to do the work alongside others.Gurley says technical competence alone is not enough for promotion, and that many leadership failures happen when agencies elevate the best performer instead of the best people leader. He explains how Brookhaven uses committees, strategic planning, and weekly command staff meetings to turn ideas into actionable outcomes. He talks about leading through questions, staying curious, and helping others solve their own problems instead of constantly fixing them himself.Gurley reflects on Brookhaven's community engagement in a large Hispanic population area, including Officer Nino's outreach work and the department's Spanish-speaking Citizens Police Academy. He shares why culture is harder to change than policy, and why training only matters if the organization's culture can support what people learn.Notable quotes“Culture by design.”“Curiosity is a growing skill set.”“A great police leader is someone who listens to understand before they listen to respond.”Hey there! Breaking the Silence with Dr. Gregory Williams Suicide Awareness, Emotional Darkness, and the Courage to Ask for Help with Anthony Gurley Dr. Gregory Williams battles a technical meltdown to welcome author Anthony Gurley, whose memoir Deadly Dilemma traces a childhood abandonment, a lifelong fear of asking for help, and the suicidal thoughts he carried quietly into old age. Technical Difficulties and a Live Broadcast Dr. Gregory Williams opens the program from his home studio in Houston, apologizing upfront for technical problems that have knocked out video and left the broadcast running as audio only. He notes that an unrelated program has mistakenly appeared on the station's Facebook feed and clarifies that he has no connection to its content. Williams tells listeners the show is beginning its seventh year on BBS Radio and Television, reachable by phone at 888-627-6008 or by text, and promises the episode will reach podcast platforms later in the week even if the live stream falters. He stays calm about the glitches, saying live radio simply comes with unpredictable nights, and mentions hopes that the station will soon be available on Roku. He describes the sun setting behind the Texas Medical Center outside his window, using the fading light to introduce the evening's theme of emotional darkness before his guest joins the conversation. Understanding Emotional Darkness Before introducing his guest, Williams spends several minutes describing the varieties of darkness people experience, from a room with the lights turned off to caves like Carlsbad Cavern where no light reaches at all, and finally an emotional darkness that can hide behind a smiling face at work or church. He lists grief, rejection, disappointment, loneliness, trauma, betrayal, fear, anxiety, shame and exhaustion as doorways into that darkness, and offers a rule he asks listeners to write down: a person cannot always keep darkness from entering, but can keep it from becoming where they live. He then walks through the first steps for staying out of emotional darkness, comparing a low-fuel warning light on his dashboard that morning to the internal warning signs of sadness, anger and anxiety, and cautioning that, unlike a car's light, these signals rarely start flashing before real danger arrives, so paying attention early matters. Dont Believe the Darkness, Ask for Help Williams adds two more principles before bringing on his guest: darkness has a voice that insists a person is alone, unloved and a failure, and that voice should never be trusted to make permanent conclusions from a temporary state. He warns that isolation is one of the fastest routes into emotional darkness and urges listeners to say the three words many people, especially men, resist: I need help. Using the image of two people carrying a heavy table instead of one, he argues that burdens do not get lighter alone, only more bearable when shared with a trusted friend, pastor or counselor. He then introduces Anthony Gurley, author of Deadly Dilemma: Suicide, Faith, and the Search for Identity and Purpose, describing him, in the words of his own publicity materials, as an ordinary person rather than a celebrity or athlete, someone whose book grew out of enduring failure, self-esteem struggles and disappointment rather than fame. A Fathers Departure and a Lesson in Silence Gurley explains that the book began as a private project meant only to introduce himself fully to his children and grandchildren, until a friend who edits professionally urged him to publish it for strangers who might recognize themselves in it, imagining a plumber in Dubuque who has never found the courage to face his own story. He recounts coming home from being cut from his school basketball team at age eleven to find his father walking out the door with a suitcase, an image tied to two remembered phrases: being told to stay out of the way because he could not see through muddy water, and being warned, don't ask me for a damn thing. Gurley says he spent his career at a small college for thirty years never once asking for a raise, a promotion or help, a pattern he now traces directly back to that day, and he credits his wife of fifty-four years, whom he proposed to after four months, as something close to providence. Friends, Choices, and Consequences After the commercial break, the conversation turns to a mantra Gurley developed for the college students he mentored for decades: friends, choices, consequences. He tells Williams to choose friends carefully and cultivate a small trusted circle, to make choices wisely while accepting that even wise choices sometimes go wrong, and to embrace consequences graciously since a person controls the first two but not the third. Williams connects this to his own grandfather's warning about running with dogs and catching fleas. Gurley describes founding a mentoring program called Motivation Ministry that paired Christian student athletes and artists with adult mentors after he retired from thirty years in financial aid, and recalls repeatedly pointing students toward Philippians 4:8, urging them to post the verse where they would see it each morning as a quiet influence on daily decisions. He admits he never had many close friends himself, something he now regrets, tracing it back to the same childhood instinct to stay out of the way and avoid being noticed. Suicide Awareness and the Courage to Ask for Help With September marking Suicide Awareness Month, Williams asks Gurley directly about the suicidal thoughts he describes in the book's unsent letter. Gurley says the thought has flitted through his mind throughout adulthood without ever becoming an attempt, and he now believes far more people share that experience than he once imagined. He describes a recurring image from the book, a snow globe admired from outside but never entered, and asks listeners whether there is a similar adventure they have envied but lacked courage to try. He recalls a high school coach telling him, at a ninetieth birthday party two Saturdays earlier, that asking for help is not weakness but strength, a reframing Gurley says he had never considered. Williams closes by naming the book, Deadly Dilemma: Suicide, Faith, and the Search for Identity and Purpose, pointing listeners to Gurley's website for crisis resources, and repeating the program's closing promise that no matter how dark life gets, there is always hope.

In Deadly Dilemma, Anthony takes you on a journey of remembrance and reflection. Everyone has a story. Sometimes, we need a nudge to revisit our stories and confront the experiences that have shaped our lives.Anthony is not famous. He is not a celebrity, an athlete, or a politician. He's an ordinary guy with a story to tell, asking that bigger question about life. He grew up in a small town in eastern North Carolina. A stellar student, he enrolled in college, where it took him ten years to get a four-year degree. He got married, started raising a family, and embarked on a lifelong career working with college students and mentors.Anthony has battled poor self-image and lack of self-esteem all his life. His daddy told him to "Get out of the way. I can't see through muddy water" and "Don't ask me for a damn thing." Those words have haunted him as he struggled to value his own self-worth.As a college counselor, Anthony's advice to young people reflects his life experience:Friends- choose them carefully, and cultivateChoices- make them wisely, and learnConsequences- embrace them graciously, and move on."In a world where many who state their faith seem focused on 'looking' perfect, Anthony simply shares his life's highs and lows (and reflections). This book is relatable, surprising, inspiring, shocking, and believable."- Chris Arline, Guilford College '95"The 'Deadly Dilemma' is real to all of us, and I stand with you, Anthony, in the eternal street fight to live an authentic life."- Jeff Thigpen, author of On Point: Voices and Values of Young Elected OfficialsOut now everywhere!

Today on Open Book, I'm joined by legendary venture capitalist Bill Gurley, whose new book Runnin' Down a Dream challenges a lot of the career advice we give young people. Bill argues that the safest career path isn't the “safe job” at all—it's finding something you're genuinely fascinated by and chasing it relentlessly. We're going to talk about curiosity, regret, and how to build a career you actually love. Bill Gurley is a general partner at Benchmark, a leading venture capital firm in Silicon Valley. Over his venture career, he has invested in and served on the board of such companies as Nextdoor, OpenTable, Stitch Fix, Uber, and Zillow. Gurley has written about technology and other subjects on his popular blog, Above the Crowd, for over 20 years. This is a sensational book. Bill Gurley: The Biggest Career Regret Most People Have

#697: Most people regret the things they never tried. Venture capitalist Bill Gurley says that pattern shows up again and again in research on end-of-life regrets — including regret about the careers people never pursued.  In this episode, Gurley joins us to talk about how people actually discover work they enjoy - and why the cliché to “follow your passion” sends people in the wrong direction. We start with a question many listeners wrestle with: what if you reach your forties or fifties and still do not know what you want to do?  Gurley explains that career changes later in life remain possible. Financial flexibility helps. People who spend every dollar they earn limit their ability to shift paths. People who control their spending keep more options open. Gurley argues that “passion” often appears only after someone spends time exploring a field. A better starting point involves fascination - the subjects that pull your attention when nobody assigns the work.  Gurley suggests paying attention to what you study in your free time. If you find yourself reading about a topic instead of watching Netflix, that curiosity may signal a possible career direction. We also discuss how most successful careers involve several stops along the way.  Gurley studied hundreds of success stories and found that many people move through two or three roles before landing their long-term path. That pattern shows up across industries. Gurley began as a computer engineer working at Compaq. Even though he enjoyed the work, his curiosity shifted toward investing and business.  He eventually left engineering, went to business school and started knocking on doors in New York until he landed a job as a Wall Street analyst. That path later led him to Silicon Valley and a 25-year career in venture capital. Throughout the conversation, we talk about continuous learning, side projects that expand career options and how curiosity often shapes a career more than long-term planning. Life is a use-it-or-lose-it situation, says our speaker. Shouldn't you try to spend it doing something you love? Venture capitalist Bill Gurley has set out to teach people his ideas for how to find your dream job and avoid a career you'll regret.  For lots of young people, career paths feel like conveyor belts—the next test, the next application, the next college—without a pause to ask what they really want to do with their lives. After Gurley went to college, he landed a job at a famous tech company. A dream job, right? But he was bored, so he took a chance and leapt into the unknown, eventually finding his place in the world of venture capital.  Such a result is rare. Bill Gurley, accomplished venture capitalist, longtime Silicon Valley “worrywart,” and early Uber backer, joins Kara Swisher to discuss how to build a career you love and the tech industry's sharp turn to the right.  Gurley's new book Runnin' Down a Dream, guides readers on how to find and nurture a truly fulfilling career — and his advice is the polar  opposite of Scott Galloway's “follow your talent, not your passion.”  Kara and Bill talk about how to find your fascination, and why the best careers are built through craft, peers, mentors, and a willingness to start at the bottom. They also dig into AI-related job loss anxiety and Gurley's growing focus on public policy — from regulatory capture to the concentration of power in the Mag 7. Bill Gurley is a titan of Silicon Valley, a visionary investor who has shaped the landscape of modern business with game-changing insights and investments in companies like Uber and Zillow. As a general partner at Benchmark, Gurley's track record is undeniable, but it's his passion for unlocking human potential, articulated in his new book "Runnin' Down a Dream: How to Thrive in a Career You Actually Love," that truly sets him apart. Through his popular blog "Above the Crowd" and social media, he has consistently shared his wisdom, inspiring countless individuals to pursue careers they genuinely love with confidence and strategic methodology.Takeaways:Unlocking Human Potential: The book "Runnin' Down a Dream" aims to equip individuals with the motivation and methodology to pursue their passions confidently, even in non-traditional fields.Mentorship and Sharing Knowledge: Learning from legends like Bobby Knight highlights the exponential positive impact of seeking mentors and generously sharing your own knowledge with others, rather than viewing success as a zero-sum game.Harnessing AI for Career Growth: Rather than fearing AI, individuals should embrace it as a "jet pack, jet fuel superpower" for accelerated learning and career advancement, especially for those with "agency" and a passion for continuous self-learning.Sound Bytes:"I could have written a book about investing or venture capital or any of those things, but it wouldn't touch as many people as I hope this one can touch.""I think the most positive reflection people should have on Bobby Knight, and I know there's a controversy about some of his tactics along the way, is his coaching tree.""If your career is crafted by the educational industrial complex and you're one of a hundred people doing the exact same thing and you come out of of academia like a widget and you're not someone who's passionate or not someone who self learns, you are a sitting duck for what AI may do."Connect & Discover Bill:LinkedIn: @billgurleyX: @bgurleyFacebook: @bgurleyBook: Runnin' Down a Dream: How to Thrive in a Career You Actually Love

What do most people regret at the end of their careers? According to legendary venture capitalist Bill Gurley, it's not the failures — it's the risks they never took. In this wide-ranging episode of The Puck, Jim Baer sits down with Gurley — longtime Benchmark partner, early Uber board member, and author of Running Down a Dream — for a candid conversation on boldness, bubbles, AI speculation, venture capital cycles, and America's structural challenges. Gurley reflects on: - Why “boldness regret” weighs heavier than failure - How to turn passion into mastery — and why most people don't - The resume arms race and why young people feel trapped - AI: real revolution or speculative excess? (Hint: both) - Venture capital's evolution — from discipline to burn-at-all-costs - Why five-year AI forecasts may set companies up to stumble - Regulatory capture in healthcare and education - State-by-state competition as America's hidden advantage From Austin's music scene to Silicon Valley's capital cycles, Gurley delivers battle-tested insights from decades at the center of tech's biggest waves. If you care about careers, markets, AI, or the future of the U.S. economy, this episode is essential listening.

An eccentric prophet, a naked Eden in the Everglades, and a man who claimed to have visited Venus. This episode excerpt from Nudetopian Nightmares traces the strange, contradictory life of Floyd M. Gurley, a figure who fused Christian fundamentalism, naturism, vegetarianism, and cosmic prophecy at the fringes of American nudist history. Pulled from Olaf Danielson's latest archival deep dive, the story offers a vivid glimpse into a forgotten world where utopian belief, nudity, and delusion often shared the same ground.

In this powerful and deeply moving episode of What Are You Made Of?, host Mike “C-Roc” welcomes Susie Gurley, creator and host of The Just a Mom Podcast, to talk about motherhood, mental health, and the life-changing mission that grew from her family's personal journey through her son's battle with depression and suicidal ideation.Susie launched The Just a Mom Podcast in September 2022, inspired by her own experience as a parent navigating her child's struggle with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Through open, compassionate conversations with other parents, individuals with lived experience, and mental health experts, Susie helps listeners realize they're not alone—and that there is always hope. With over 100 episodes now available on all major platforms, her show continues to be a powerful resource for families and individuals impacted by mental health challenges. In this heartfelt conversation, Susie opens up about the red flags she missed, the lessons she's learned as a parent, and why vulnerability and open dialogue about mental health are critical—especially for our children. Together, Susie and Mike "C-Roc" explore the deeper causes behind today's youth mental health crisis, from social media to isolation, and how empathy, awareness, and storytelling can help break the stigma. This episode is a reminder that being “just a mom” means being a warrior, an advocate, and a source of light in the darkest times.Website-https://www.thejustamompodcast.com/ Social Media Links/Handles-https://www.facebook.com/thejustamompodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/thejustamompodcast/
