Break 1 : Peggy Slappey Story 1. badge Gwinnett County Public Schools is implementing Centegix's CrisisAlert badge system to improve safety. The system allows teachers and staff to press a button on their badges in emergency situations, triggering alerts for immediate assistance. It can be used in various scenarios, from medical emergencies to hard lockdowns. The system provides pinpoint information about the location of the alert, even if the staff member is outside the building. In the event of a life-threatening situation, staff can trigger an immediate lockdown by pressing the badge eight times. The event highlights the county's local breweries and craft beer scene with activities, giveaways, and brewery events. Patrons can enjoy music, trivia, karaoke, and even axe throwing at various breweries. The "Sippin' in the Suburbs Brewery Tour" offers a behind-the-scenes bus tour of Gwinnett County's beer scene, featuring stops at different breweries. The week aims to celebrate the local brew masters and the vibrant craft beer culture in the area. Story 3: phones Gwinnett County police are seeking to identify a man who allegedly stole 11 cell phones, including iPhones, from a T-Mobile store in Peachtree Corners. The theft occurred a couple weeks ago, where the suspect cut cords on display phones and placed them in a backpack before leaving. Similar thefts at other T-Mobile stores in Metro Atlanta may be related. Surveillance footage and stills of the suspect were recently released. He is described as a light-skinned Black male with dreadlocks, wearing a face mask, long-sleeved gray shirt, and tan shorts, carrying a black backpack. The suspect left the store in a black Lincoln SUV. Anyone with information can contact the police or Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous. See pictures and read more at gwinnettdailypost.com We'll be right back Break 2: M.O.G. - Tom Wages - Obits Story 4: robot Researchers from the University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) have developed a remote control robotic vehicle with virtual reality capability that can operate in high-risk emergency environments such as humanitarian disasters and war zones. The robot, using medical telexistence (MediTel) technology, can assess a casualty's vital signs, provide pain relief injections, and stream real-time data to a remote operator. The system was developed in just nine months and has the potential to save lives by allowing medics to perform remote triage without endangering their own lives. The team aims to further develop the technology into a large-scale integrated medical emergency platform for rapid deployment to disasters with multiple casualties. Story 5: birdies The Mitsubishi Electric Classic, Georgia's only PGA TOUR Champions event, raised over half a million dollars for local charities through its Birdies for Charity program. The program, in partnership with Gwinnett Championship Foundation, Primerica, and Gwinnett Place Ford and Nissan, garnered $352,000 in charitable donations. Beneficiaries included Annandale Village, Cooper's Crew, Special Needs Schools of Gwinnett, and Women's Club of Sugarloaf Country Club Charities. Since 2016, Birdies for Charity has raised over $2.35 million for local organizations. The tournament director, Ashley Hamilton, expressed gratitude for the community's support in embracing the philanthropic aspect of the event. Story 6: latino As the 2024 election approaches, a group of Latino voters is becoming more undecided, posing a challenge for the Democratic Party. Latino voters, especially first-time ones, are loosening their traditional ties to Democrats, making them a potentially decisive group in the upcoming election. About a third of Latinos identify as Democrats, but Latino support for Democratic candidates dropped in the 2022 midterms, mostly due to changes in turnout among Latino Republicans. Story 7: head Valdosta State University graduate Donovan Head has been appointed as the executive director of the Charter Schools Commission of Georgia. The appointment was made by Gov. Brian Kemp following approval by the Board of Commissioners. Head, currently the deputy director of the Governor's Office of Student Achievement, will assume his new role on August 1. Kemp praised Head's commitment to Georgia's students and expressed confidence in his ability to strengthen educational opportunities for families across the state. The Board Chair also expressed satisfaction with the selection, citing Head's skills and experience as ideal for advancing the State Charter School Commission's mission of providing high-quality charter schools throughout Georgia. Story 8: content Mill Creek High School senior Justin Content has made a commitment to join the football program at Western Kentucky University. Content, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound athlete, plays as a defensive back and wide receiver. He played a significant role in helping Mill Creek win the Class 7A state championship last year, contributing with an 80-yard touchdown catch and an interception that led to another score in the state finals victory over Carrollton. As a junior, Content primarily played as a defensive back and had impressive stats, including 62 tackles, three interceptions, and nine pass breakups during the season. Story 9: HOF The Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame held its induction ceremony after a four-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event took place at the Gas South Convention Center and welcomed six new inductees. Among them was Will Hammock, the Daily Post Sports Editor, who recalled his love for high school sports and the athletes and coaches he had the opportunity to interview and write about during his 26-year career. Story 1. field The Gwinnett County Board of Education approved renaming Mountain View High School's football field to Chaney Field in honor of former Principal Keith Chaney. The request was made by the school's local council to recognize Chaney's significant positive impact on academics, fine arts, and athletics during his 13 years of leadership. A dedication ceremony is planned during Mountain View's first home football game in August. The updated playground will adhere to modern inclusivity standards while maintaining the essence of the original design. It will be constructed with environmentally-friendly, durable materials for longevity and minimal upkeep. New York-based Leathers & Associates, the original designer, is partnering with the city again. The PlayTown Committee will recruit 1,500 volunteers for the community build scheduled for Oct. 9-15, welcoming people of all abilities and interests. The build experience provides hands-on opportunities for citizens to contribute to their community and express shared pride. Story 3: academy The Snellville Police Department is offering a nine-week Citizens Police Academy class from Sept. 7 to Nov. 2 to foster a stronger bond between officers and the community. The program is open to Snellville-area residents aged 18 and older and covers topics such as domestic violence, traffic stops, building searches, and firearms safety. It includes a ride-along opportunity with a police officer. The academy is free, and applicants do not need to live within city limits. The competition, organized by the American Heritage Committee, aims to highlight American heritage through various arts categories. This year's theme was "Educating the Next Generation on Our Historic American Trails." The sisters, who are members of the Philadelphia Winn DAR chapter, received first place in the Fiber Arts/Embroidery category and were also awarded the prestigious Evelyn Cole Peters Award, considered a "Best of Show" recognition by the American Heritage Committee. The IDEAS Program aims to diversify and increase U.S. students' study abroad experiences worldwide. Story 6: lincoln Lincoln Property Company Southeast is now managing the retail area of Suwanee Town Center, including four buildings with a total of 58,634-square-feet of space. Major tenants in the area include Tequila Mama Taqueria, Mellow Mushroom, and Planet Smoothie. Cook played for several NFL teams and made significant contributions during his career, including a memorable catch with the Green Bay Packers in a playoff game. He acknowledges the competitive environment in Gwinnett County, where players know they must elevate their game to succeed, and he values the experience gained from playing against top-level talent in high school. Story 8: pope Buford High School senior Gavin Pope has made a commitment to join the wrestling program at Campbell University in North Carolina. Pope's impressive record includes winning the Class 7A state championship at 144 pounds with a 50-11 record. In his sophomore year, he secured third place at the state championship at 138 pounds and achieved a record of 34-5. With his strong performances in high school, Pope looks forward to continuing his wrestling career at the collegiate level. Story 9: Wilkins Isaiah Wilkins, a former standout player at the University of Virginia, has been promoted to assistant coach of the men's basketball program. Wilkins previously served as a graduate assistant at Virginia for two seasons after completing his professional basketball career. As a player, he contributed to the Cavaliers' success with two ACC regular-season titles, one ACC Tournament title, and four NCAA tournament appearances. He was recognized as ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2018 and achieved several defensive team honors. Wilkins has been actively involved in player development, scouting, recruiting, and video analysis during his time on the coaching staff. He holds both an undergraduate and master's degree from UVA. I really don't even want to talk about it* The 2015 Season Was Rodgers Putting the Team on His Back* Finished 10-6 after a 7-0 start - a lot of injuries* HAIL MARY #1 in Week 13* Limped into the playoffs* Lost to the Arizona Cardinals in the Divisional Round* Rodgers Hail Mary #2 * The best WR was Jeff Janis in that game due to injuries* Rodgers threw passes to Janis, Jared Abbrederis, Richard Rodgers, John Kuhn, Eddie Lacy, and James Starks in that game (lol)* Took GB to overtime against a formidable ARI team* The 2016 Season Was The “Run The Table” Season* Started 4-6 and had a brutal SNF loss in DC * Rodgers said “I think we can run the table”* And they did so* In the final six weeks of the season…* Packers went 6-0 and won the division in Week 17 at Detroit* 1667 yards, 15 TD, 0 INT, 121 RTG … I forgot how brilliant he was in that run* Despite ZERO defense, he carried them to the NFCCG in Atlanta, where they got obliterated* Hail Mary #3 in the Wild Card Round against the NY Giants* The Divisional Round game at Dallas was incredible…the Jared Cook catch* The 2017 Season Was Injury Plagued* Started 4-1, but Rodgers broke his collarbone in Week 6 due to that loser Anthony Barr* Tried to come back but struggled against the Panthers in Week 15* The 2018 Season Was The End of the McCarthy Era* It was the weirdest 25-touchdown to 2-interception season ever..Rodgers and GB's offense lacked a lot* A horrific Week 13 loss to ARI got McCarthy fired* 6-9-1 record and playoffs missed* The 2019 Season Was the Beginning of the LaFleur Era* Went 13-3 after the offense lacked sharpness* They won a lot of close games and weren't a very good team* Rodgers had two “down seasons” in 2018 and 2019, but had 51 TD and 6 INT … which is insane* Another NFCCG Loss to the 49ers* The 2020 Season May Have Been Rodgers' Best* The Aaron Rodgers —> Davante Adams connection was ABSOLUTELY ELITE in 2020* Rodgers had one bad game in 2020 - Week 6 in Tampa* Overall, he had 51 TD (3 rushing), 5 INT, and a 121.5 RTG and his 3rd MVP* The dominance against the NFC North and SNF snow game against Tennessee was very memorable* In another heartbreaking loss, the Packers went down to the Buccaneers at Lambeau in the NFCCG* They absolutely should've won this game* The 2021 Offseason Was a Disaster* Rodgers asked for a trade* It was a whole big thing* The 2021 Season Equaled Back-to-Back MVPs* The whole COVID thing happened* He threw 20 TD and 1 INT after the COVID thing* 37 TD, 4 INT, 111.9 RTG overall, and his 4th MVP* A stunning loss in the Divisional Round to the 49ers… seemed like the end of the Rodgers Era, but it wasn't * Packers traded Davante Adams to the Raiders after extending Rodgers * The 2022 Season Was Not Good* The season went downhill after the loss in London to the NY Giants* Rodgers broke his thumb and played through it after that game* They went 8-9 and had a real chance to make the playoffs in Week 18, but lost to the Lions* The last Rodgers game at Lambeau was one to forget - 17/27, 205 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 83.1 RTG* The Trade to the Jets* Overall Reflection and Thoughts on the Rodgers EraThanks for tuning in!
