Jelks investigates urban environmental health disparities; the impact of climate change on marginalized communities; the role that place, race, and social factors play in influencing health; and urban greening and resilience practices and their impact on health. She also develops, implements, and evaluates community-based initiatives that set conditions to enable low-income and communities of color to empower themselves to reduce exposure to environmental health hazards. Jelks' scholarship centers participatory approaches that engage environmentally overburdened communities in monitoring local environmental conditions, generating actionable data for community change, and developing effective community-based interventions that revitalize toxic, degraded spaces into healthy places. She is currently leading UrbanHeatATL, a research initiative in which local students and community members are mapping urban heat islands in Atlanta with community science. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Puppetry meets scienceMusician Greg Herriges of Minneapolis recommends a date night or family trip to see Z Puppets Rosenschnoz's performance of “Cellula.” The show combines blacklight puppetry and live a capella music by improv vocalists Mankwe Ndosi and Libby Turner, zooming in on a story that takes place at the cellular level.Performances take place at Sabathani Community Center in Minneapolis. Showtimes are Thursday at 5:30 p.m., Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The show is recommended for ages 5 and up. Microscope activity stations will be available 30 minutes before each show.Greg says: It takes the world that you might see in a microscope and brings it to glow-in-the-dark life. It is educational, mesmerizing, funny. The live music by Mankwe and Libby is somewhat improv-based, I believe, but it also includes intertwined melodies and sound effects to create just beautiful soundscape to this great fusion of art and science.— Greg HerrigesA haunted Winona theater showWriter and playwright Kathleen Kenney Peterson of Winona plans to get into the Halloween spirit by attending “Mallory's Ghost,” an original ghost story and murder mystery set in a haunted theater. The play involves three heiresses and a ghost with something to say.It's written and produced by Margaret Shaw Johnson of Winona, who has written several plays and a book inspired by local hauntings. The show runs Friday, Oct. 24, through Sunday, Nov. 2. Tickets are available through the Great River Shakespeare Festival.Kenney Peterson is also excited about the venue.Kathleen says: The Historic Masonic Theatre here in Winona has been closed for two years for renovations, and this play will be the first opportunity the public has to be in the building for over two years!— Kathleen Kenney PetersonPolka, anyone?Folk musician Sarah Larsson of Minneapolis plans to see the Upper Midwest Folk Fiddlers perform at Tapestry Folkdance Center in Minneapolis, Thursday at 7 p.m. Expect to hear — and dance to, if you choose — polkas, schottisches, waltzes and other traditional tunes.Sarah says: I think maybe a lot of people know about folk music from Appalachia or from the American South. But turns out, of course, here in the Upper Midwest — Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Dakotas — there's folk music, too, that comes from the early 20th century and the middle of the 19th century. What this group considers folk music from this region is all the music of different immigrants from Europe during that era, as well as Indigenous communities.— Sarah Larsson

Actor/Director Helen Hunt & Actor singer/songwriter psych/mythology PHD phd Helen Slater discuss a deep friendship and love, growing up in art, the beginning of their friendship on a trip to russia, Winnie The Pooh,, growing beyond your first dream, parenting, parenting artists, Helen H. introducing Helen S. to her husband, improv, acting styles, baseball, French Fries, & clown school.Bio: Helen Hunt has enjoyed a distinguished career not only as an award-winning actor, but as an accomplished writer, director, and producer. As an actress, her extensive and diverse body of work includes roles in film, theater, and television.      Hunt enjoyed a residency at The Old Vic Theatre in EUREKA DAY, a story about parents on the Executive Committee of a progressive private school in Berkeley, California. While taking pride in their ability to accept everyone, a public health scare erupts, testing their tolerance and revealing their true colors. Written by Jonathan Spector and directed by Katy Rudd. Fred helps clients manage and then defend in court environmental reviews performed under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) or equivalent state statutes. He works with public agencies and private developers to secure permits and approvals from federal and state regulators under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act (CWA), the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). Fred is familiar with the full range of issues surrounding USDOT surface transportation programs, including grant management, procurement, suspension and debarment, and safety regulations. During his career, Fred has handled a wide variety of environmental litigation in federal trial and appellate courts across the country, from citizen suits, to government enforcement actions, to Administration Procedure Act (APA) challenges.Fred was appointed Chief Counsel of the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) during the Obama administration. He managed all legal matters involving the $40 billion Federal-Aid Highway program, including environmental and natural resources issues for highway and multimodal transportation projects. Among other high-profile projects, he oversaw the agency's defense of the following:  New York's Tappan Zee Bridge, San Francisco's Presidio Parkway, Chicago's Elgin-O'Hare Expressway, Kentucky and Indiana's Ohio River Bridges, North Carolina's Bonner Bridge, Alabama's Birmingham Northern Beltline, Wisconsin's Zoo Interchange, and Washington's State Road 520 Bridge. He represented the FHWA on government-wide Transportation Rapid Response Team, a multi-agency task force focused on improving project delivery and environmental review reforms.Fred began his career as a trial attorney in the Environment Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. He also served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Misdemeanor Trial Section of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia. Michelan Sisti (Micha) Michelan Sisti (Micha) is thankful to have a long and varied career as musician, actor, director and puppeteer. From Broadway to Hollywood, his favorite performances include: Michaelangelo, in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I & II”, Charlene Sinclair, in the television series “Dinosaurs”, all of his work with the Muppets, and Tol, in the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” episode, “Bloodlines”. Yes, Micha was a Ferengi! How cool is that? Josh Pais Josh grew up in NYC's infamous Alphabet City, 7th Street between C&D. His father was a theoretical physicist who worked with Einstein, his mother a poet and painter. His first lead in a movie was playing Raphael in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Often referred to as, “That guy,” Josh has acted in over a hundred movies and TV shows. He is known for his many recurring TV roles including Showtimes' Ray Donovan as Stu Feldman, Netflix's Maniac, Younger, Law and Order as Hank Abraham, as well as such shows as High Maintenance, The Good Wife, Damages, Star Trek Deep: Space Nine, The Sopranos, and early on as the Modelizer on Sex and The City. He is currently on HBO's new series, Mrs Fletcher with Kathryn Hahn. Josh is well known for his stand out performances in independent and mainstream films. Currently he can be seen in the record breaking Joker as Hoyt Vaughn – Joaquin Phoenix's character's boss. Lauren embarked on her career in a Texas freshwater mussel lab before relocating to Atlanta. As a project manager, she successfully led a team of scientists specializing in NEPA work for cell towers across 29 states. Lauren has since transitioned to working with additional lead agencies and Pond and Company, where she serves as the manager of a NEPA team. STORY 2: Former Campbell Student Killed at Prom After-Party Identified Former Campbell High student Ashton Hornsby, 17, was fatally shot at a prom after-party in Powder Springs. Police arrested 18-year-old Carlos Diaz, who claimed self-defense, alleging Hornsby intended to attack him. Hornsby suffered two gunshot wounds and died at Wellstar Cobb Hospital. Diaz faces murder and aggravated assault charges and is held without bond. Campbell High Principal Vanessa Watkins expressed deep sorrow, noting the impact on students, while the Cobb County School District offered counseling and emphasized safety measures. STORY 3: UPDATE: Erick Allen Wins Runoff for Cobb Commission Seat Erick Allen defeated Dr. Jaha Howard in the Democratic runoff for Cobb County’s District 2 Commission seat, earning 56.72% of the vote to Howard’s 42.28%, per unofficial results. Howard conceded and pledged support for Allen in the April 29 general election against Republican Alicia Adams. This marks Allen’s second victory over Howard, following a February primary where neither secured a majority. The special election follows legal disputes over district maps, with the original map drawn by the Republican-led legislature reinstated after a court ruling. Anderson Theatre. This comedic, Spanish-inspired “rom-com” ballet follows Don Quixote and Sancho Panza’s adventures alongside sweethearts Kitri and Basilio. Featuring pre-professional dancers aged 7 to high school seniors, the production is set to Ludwig Minkus’ score and includes both traditional and original choreography. Showtimes are 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. (March 22) and 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. (March 23). Tickets start at $25 at georgiametrodance.org/tickets. STORY 5: Mechanic Shop Catches Fire in Marietta A fire broke out at a mechanic shop on Gann Road in Marietta Tuesday, but no injuries were reported, according to Cobb County Fire Department. The fire started when a mechanic removing a fuel tank from a Ford F-150 caused an explosion, igniting gasoline and the truck. The flames quickly spread to the single-story building and multiple vehicles. STORY 7: Cobb Deadlocks Over Mableton Alcohol License The Cobb Board of Commissioners faced a deadlock over an alcohol license appeal for Vape Vibes, a Mableton convenience and vape shop. The shop sought the license to expand into a full convenience store, but concerns arose over its proximity to residences and its focus on vape products. While some commissioners supported the application, citing the shop's efforts to grow and its clean operation, others questioned its alignment with community needs. With Mableton transitioning regulatory authority, the case remains unresolved, and the shop owner withdrew the application, leaving future decisions to the city.
