Why did the Ohio General Assembly decide to create a separate offense for being in “physical control” of a vehicle while under the influence? In this follow-up episode, Steve Palmer and Troy tackle the question about the classic “sleep it off” scenario—can you really avoid a DUI by staying in your car and catching some shut-eye after a night out?Drawing on Ohio law and years of experience, Steve Palmer breaks down what it means to be in “physical control” of a vehicle while under the influence, how that differs from an OVI (DUI), and why the law was changed to address this very situation. The guys explore legal strategy, insurance implications, and the difference between old barstool myths and the current legal reality. Whether you're a legal nerd or someone who enjoys a late-night White Castle run, this episode has practical insight you won't want to miss! Here are 3 key takeaways:Sleeping in your car while intoxicated can still be a crime. The Ohio General Assembly created a separate offense called "physical control," meaning you can be charged even if you're not driving but merely in charge of the vehicle 03:09.Physical control is less severe than an OVI (DUI). Carrying no mandatory jail time or license suspension, and it's a non-moving, no-point violation 04:40. It's often used as a plea reduction from drunk driving charges.Insurance implications vary. While not as harsh as a DUI or reckless operation on your record, physical control is still alcohol-related and may impact your insurance differently 05:36.Submit your questions to www.lawyertalkpodcast.com.Recorded at Channel 511.Stephen E. Palmer, Esq. has been practicing criminal defense almost exclusively since 1995. He has represented people in federal, state, and local courts in Ohio and elsewhere.Though he focuses on all areas of criminal defense, he particularly enjoys complex cases in state and federal courts. He has unique experience handling and assembling top defense teams of attorneys and experts in cases involving allegations of child abuse (false sexual allegations, false physical abuse allegations), complex scientific cases involving allegations of DUI and vehicular homicide cases with blood alcohol tests, and any other criminal cases that demand jury trial experience.Steve has unique experience handling numerous high publicity cases that have garnered national attention. For more information about Steve and his law firm, visit Palmer Legal Defense. The inner courtyard goes completely quiet as dusk falls. Lantern light flickers softly against white walls and dark timbers. Servants move soundlessly like a gentle breeze, tending to gravel paths and manicured trees. Deeper inside the fortress, careful whispers of politics and ambition drift through the great halls. Everything feels deliberate, and every offering is carefully chosen to seek favour in a world where position is everything. That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits

Nick heads back to January 10, 2009 to revisit the one and only time Neil Patrick Harris hosted Saturday Night Live. It turned out to be a terrific show, and Nick plays some of the funniest moments while sharing stories about how a few standout sketches from that season came together. He also talks about Harris' career arc, from child star on Doogie Howser, M.D. to Emmy-winning actor, singer, and all-around performer. A big turning point came with his scene-stealing role in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, and you'll hear the classic moment that helped launch the second half of his career. The episode showcases strong work from Kristen Wiig, Bobby Moynihan, Fred Armisen, Jason Sudeikis, Abby Elliott and more. It also features one of the funniest sketches of that era, a gathering of Broadway stars debating the future of the Great White Way. It's a strong reminder of how well that episode worked and why Harris was such a natural fit for the show. [Ep 167]

Erik Garcia, CFP®, ChFC®, BFA™, welcomes back Phil Blancato for their annual market conversation, now a tradition on Stuff About Money They Didn't Teach You In School. Phil is Chief Market Strategist at Osaic Wealth, a regular on Fox Business, and an experienced portfolio manager who brings equal parts insight and humor, including a lightning round that somehow turns the 2026 market into a lasagna and ends with a debate on why pasta made in Italy is superior. Phil's core headline for 2026 is a return to more normal market behavior: broader participation beyond a handful of mega-cap names and more average equity returns than the outsized gains investors have gotten used to. They unpack what a "defining year" for AI actually means, including winners, losers, and the infrastructure and energy needed to power the buildout, plus how productivity gains could change work and life. The conversation also hits international's resurgence, why bonds are "sexy" again, and the discipline of staying invested through scary headlines. Phil closes with what keeps him up at night, with debt and renewed inflation risk at the top, and a reminder that diversification is the plan when market leadership shifts. Episode Highlights: Phil explains how treating colleagues and clients as friends and family has made a 35-year career feel like he's never worked a day in his life. (02:05) Phil's one headline for 2026: a return to normal market returns with broader participation across sectors. (08:00) Phil uses "Flippy the fryer," an AI arm completing 200,000 man hours at White Castle, to illustrate real-world AI productivity gains. (15:05) Phil emphasizes Finance 101: never panic based on headlines, as US economic fundamentals remain strong beneath the noise. (20:00) Erik highlights his favorite chart showing intra-year drawdowns versus final returns, making the case for staying invested through volatility. (26:28) Phil believes that AI overdependence is dangerous, pointing to GPS reliance and the Pope's ban on AI-written sermons as cautionary examples. (31:00) Phil identifies rising inflation and the US debt burden as his top black swan risks for markets. (39:25) Erik reflects on using AI-driven productivity for leisure, coaching basketball, and spending more time doing what matters most. (45:45) Key Quotes: “It's a defining year for AI. What companies can either continue to grow revenue or use AI to be more productive.” - Phil Blancato “I would say I've always been a big fan of why people like me are successful. We take advantage of when there's a panic in markets, and there's a panic in a software market right now.” - Phil Blancato “Being paid to wait around. You're getting real return, real income in your portfolio. It gives you safety and security and maybe a chance to see them go up as much as 7% or 8% this year.” - Phil Blancato Resources Mentioned: Phil Blancato Osaic Wealth Erik Garcia, CFP®, BFA Xavier Angel, CFP®, ChFC, CLTC Plan Wisely Wealth Advisors

Project Management Happy Hour
120 - How smart teams talk themselves into Failure, with Dr. Bill Brantley

Project Management Happy Hour

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 10, 2026 52:52

Why do smart teams still deliver failed projects? Most project failures don't begin with a catastrophic mistake. Instead, they begin with small deviations—minor compromises that seem harmless in the moment. A warning sign gets ignored. A shortcut becomes acceptable. A risk is acknowledged but tolerated because "nothing bad happened last time." Over time, those deviations quietly become the new normal. In this episode of Project Management Happy Hour, Kim Essendrup and Kate Anderson sit down with Dr. Bill Brantley to explore one of the most dangerous patterns in project leadership: normalization of deviance. The concept comes from sociologist Diane Vaughan's analysis of the Challenger space shuttle disaster. Engineers had long observed problems with the shuttle's O-ring seals. But earlier launches survived those anomalies. Each successful launch reinforced the belief that the risk was acceptable. Gradually, what began as an abnormal warning became accepted behavior. As Dr. Brantley explains: "We survived that near miss. It's okay. Next time we'll be okay." Project teams fall into this pattern all the time. A design review is skipped because the team is behind schedule. A test failure gets dismissed because it hasn't caused a real problem yet. A risk gets documented—but never truly addressed. Nothing breaks immediately. So the project keeps moving. The conversation explores how this slow drift toward failure mirrors patterns seen in aviation, engineering disasters, and even mountaineering expeditions. Experienced professionals—people who know better—gradually normalize increasingly risky decisions until the system finally breaks. But the episode goes further than just diagnosing the problem. Dr. Brantley and the hosts dive into the decision dynamics inside projects. A typical project team makes dozens—or even hundreds—of decisions every week. Some have immediate consequences, while others take months or years to reveal their impact. One story from the Apollo program illustrates this perfectly: a weld defect made years earlier ultimately contributed to the crisis of Apollo 13. This delay between decision and consequence creates a dangerous blind spot. Dr. Brantley jokingly calls it the "White Castle effect." "White Castle burgers are great going down… and then at three in the morning you realize you made a bad decision." The same thing happens in project management. Decisions that seem harmless in the moment can produce painful consequences much later. One of the most powerful insights from the discussion is that organizations often fail to reflect on their decisions. Teams act, move forward, and stay busy—but rarely pause to ask whether their decisions are actually improving outcomes. That reflection step is critical. "Reflection really helps you break that normalization of deviance." Without it, teams never notice when small compromises start compounding into systemic risk. The episode also explores practical techniques for improving project decision-making. One of Dr. Brantley's favorites is red teaming—a method borrowed from military strategy and cybersecurity. In a red-team exercise, someone deliberately challenges the plan and tries to break it. Their job is to expose weaknesses before reality does. It's a powerful way to counter groupthink and create psychological safety for dissent. Another theme throughout the conversation is something many project managers intuitively know but rarely articulate: Every action—or inaction—on a project is ultimately a decision. "Everything is a decision. Nobody is going to come after you around anything other than decisions." Whether it's changing scope, delaying work, ignoring a risk, or choosing not to act at all, project leaders are constantly making decisions that shape the outcome of the project. The real question isn't whether decisions are happening. It's whether those decisions are intentional, visible, and thoughtfully examined. Because in many projects, failure doesn't arrive suddenly. It arrives slowly—one accepted deviation at a time. Love our content? Then join the PM Happy Hour membership at pmhappyhour.com/membership

From growing up in Poughkeepsie, New York, and building homes with his hands to buying his first bar from his father-in-law Tony Marino in 1996, Dave shares the full arc of how hard work, family, and a willingness to "figure it out" built a six-location dive bar empire across the West Valley. The conversation goes deep on what it really means to run a family business in hospitality, how Dave and his wife Lori built their operation together (she's known as "the executioner" for a reason), and how their son and daughter have now stepped into daily operations and HR to carry the legacy forward. Dave also opens up about life at 60, losing his father last year, taking his 86-year-old mom wine tasting, and why golf, travel, cooking, and wine at night keep him grounded. You'll hear one of the wildest bar stories ever told involving a live World War II hand grenade thrown into one of his bars, plus Dave's journey from ALBA board member to seven-year president, why a $200,000 Series 6 license needs protecting, and where he stands on mandatory Title 4 training and personal responsibility. Stay for rapid fire on Sunday day drinkers, Michelob Ultra, napkin deals, White Castle, and why dive bars are the fabric of America.Chapter Guide (Timestamps):(0:00 - 2:53) Episode 200 Celebration, "On The Delos," and Why Delo Matters to the Industry(2:54 - 6:38) Growing Up in New York, the Mazda B2000 Road Trip, and Meeting His Wife at Gentleman's Choice(6:39 - 9:54) Moving to Arizona, Buying a Bar from Tony Marino, and Building Six Locations with His Hands(9:54 - 12:38) His Wife "The Executioner," Partnership, and What a Good Woman Does for Your Life and Business(12:39 - 15:18) Passing the Business to His Kids, College First, and Letting Go After 30 Years of Decisions(15:18 - 17:55) Life at 60: Golf, Travel, Wine at Night, and Taking His 86-Year-Old Mom Wine Tasting(17:56 - 20:52) The Live Hand Grenade Story: The Wildest Thing That's Ever Happened in One of His Bars(20:52 - 25:06) Getting Into ALBA, Industry Titans, Bill Weigel, and Why It's "My Time, My Turn"(25:06 - 29:02) What ALBA Does: Lobbying, Licensing, Protecting the $200K Series 6, and Don Isaacson at the Capitol(29:02 - 33:19) Title 4 Training, Mandatory vs. Voluntary, Personal Responsibility, and Masking Intoxication(33:19 - 35:42) ALBA Membership Benefits, $300/Year, Insurance Discounts, and a Welcome to New Members(35:42 - 42:03) Rapid Fire: Sunday Drinkers, Dive Bars, Michelob Ultra, Napkin Deals, White Castle, and Delo's Close

Brim, Kim and Mr. Greer are back at it again. Apart from all the usual shenanigans, the gang chats about everything in pop culture with all the trimmings as they discuss a plethora of AI headlines including the man who predicted AI, the new AI agent only social media (Skynet here we come), Google dropping Project Genie, and the man arrested for collecting royalties of over $10M for AI music. The crew also chats about the boxer who got his toupee knocked clean off, the great mini duck search (or not so great), Luigi Mangione no longer facing the death penalty, and why 90s kids think differently than Gen Z. The cast talks about the passing of Catherine O'Hara and Grady Demond Wilson, Motley Crue defeating Mick Mars in court, The Last of Us, and White Castle vending machines. They talk about Ted Lasso's comeback, Cher fumbling of Kendrick Lamar's win (all in good fun), and Jaden Smith's awesome restaurant. The crew also discusses how Wendy's is owning Chik-Fil-et with their trolling, and the Epstein Files... people who continued to stay involved after he'd been convicted. The crew chats about entertainment news, opinions and other cool stuff and things. Enjoy.Wherever you listen to podcasts & www.thegrindhouseradio.comhttps://linktr.ee/thegrindhouseradio
