Welcome to The Replayables, where The I-5 Corridor's Traffic Report hosts Tyson Alger and Justin Myers revisit one classic game in Oregon history every month.Well friends, we sure hope you didn't leave this one early. Yes, Oklahoma was up 10 points with four minutes to go. Yes, the Sooners had the ball, in the red zone, with quite possibly the best run-out-the-clock running back in college football history — Adrian Peterson — in the backfield. And yes, the No. 18 Oregon Ducks looked tired, beaten down and all but cooked in a matchup against a No. 15 Oklahoma team that would only lose one more game the rest of the regular season. And while the Ducks managed to force the Sooners to kick a field goal to go up 13 with 3:16 to play, that was just a consolation prize. Right? Right????Wrong. In this episode of The Replayables, Tyson and Justin do a deep dive on what might be the wildest three minutes of football in Oregon history. Then, we bring on Jason Kersey, formerly of The Oklahoman and The Athletic, to break down just how much this one stung for the fans from Norman. Thanks for listening, everyone. Let us know in the comments what game we should replay next. — Tyson Alger, The I-5 CorridorPreviously on The Replayables: 14 years later, Dyer still looks downThe I-5 Corridor is a reader-supported publication. Things Discussed: Signing Day: Got the most talent on offense since…1998? Down the list: OL: Two of the highest-ranked OTs in the history of the program, Gach was a Priority 1 for the program, Strayhorn is a center. RB: Jasper Parker the sites just missed; poorer man's Adrian Peterson. M thinks DJ is healthy. WR: Marsh was a big pull vs heavy hitters, Year 1 player. Browder needs development but Junior Hemingway upside. Washington is tall and can move well. TE: Owens is a Bredeson, really hurts that they missed on Olesh. DL: We love the heavy-handed build-a-bears that Esposito recruits. Remember his WMU guys? Moten and Patterson are going to be those guys too. Lou is convinced Benny Patterson is the guy. Kanka is a Godin. Marshall was a Priority and a big win. Can't expect them to get the scouting coup of the century with Graham and Grant every year but they can scout and now they can win the guys they scouted. Basketball: Every guy is good with a tradeoff, and that tradeoff is turnovers, e.g. look at the defense that Roddy Gayle (and Pippen) played on Ace Bailey. Rutgers: We got a break by missing Harper, who just shredded Illinois. Oregon game: the mental errors are baked in at this point, like they're not going to score at the rim as well as you want them to. Also baked in is the fact that they switch everything and play drop coverage, so your Shelstad types who make 50%+ of other twos after attacking a Goldin or Wolf are going to score. Sugarplum vision of a top-3 seed and winning the B10 is probably gone. All but one of their remaining games (all but Rutgers at home) are Kenpom A (top-50) tier, IE Q1 opportunities.
This week on "Our Honest Opinion" podcast, Thomas and Sean dissect the NFL Championship games and look ahead to the Super Bowl. We also analyze Saquon Barkley's impressive performance, sparking a debate about his place among the all-time great running backs, comparing his style to Adrian Peterson and Le'Veon Bell. Then, we break down the controversial Kansas City Chiefs versus Buffalo Bills game. We discuss the questionable referee calls, including a disputed interception, a close fourth down tush push, and other calls that seemed to favor the Chiefs. The conversation also covers Patrick Mahomes' clutch plays and the ongoing debate about whether he has surpassed Tom Brady as the GOAT. We compare their stats and achievements and talk about the possibility of renaming the Lombardi Trophy after Brady.Looking ahead to the Super Bowl, we preview the match-up between the Eagles and Chiefs. We analyze the Eagles' roster strength and discuss their chances of a blowout victory. We also touch on the coaching carousel and the challenges faced by black coaches, with discussion of recent hiring and firing.. We also dive into unique plays like the tush push and the controversial rule regarding jumping over the pile. Finally, we briefly mention some recent WNBA trades.Hosted by Ausha. Sign up for free here: https://ryanhawk.kit.com/profile Bob Stoops was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2021. He was the head football coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1999 to 2016. He led the Sooners to a 191-48 record over his career. His 2000/2001 team won the national championship. He earned the National Coach of the Year award the same season. Since 2020, Stoops has been a head coach in the XFL, winning an XFL Championship in 2023 with the Arlington Renegades. He played college football at the University of Iowa, earning team MVP his senior year as a defensive back. Notes: Coaches Bob has worked for: Hayden Fry at Iowa, Bill Snyder at Kansas State, and Steve Spurrier at Florida. He's worked for some amazing coaches. Relationships are everything. You must connect with people. You must be authentic. Learn from other coaches, but you have to be yourself Sherri Coale: “One of my favorite things about him is he's the busiest man on the planet but never appeared that way. That's a skill and an art. That fascinates me.” What makes a great head coach? They relate to people. They care about them. They can motivate and influence by clearly sharing the vision of the program and inspiring others to get on board. They are decisive people. Most importantly, they know how to connect with people. All leadership is a people business. If you can't connect with others, you'll probably struggle. Creating a “coaches forest” (beyond a tree) - Mike Stoops, Mark Mangino, Mike Leach, Bo Pelini, Kevin Sumlin, Kevin Wilson, Lincoln Riley, and more. How has Bob prepared so many guys to be successful head coaches? Hiring – “I always tried to hire people smarter than me.” A lot of people say this, but not all do this. Coach Stoops looked for people who had a track record of performance… And then he used his gut instincts after he spent time with him. He paid attention to how they treated his secretary, how they treated the waiter at lunch… Some call those the little things, but they were very important to Coach Stoops The overarching theme of the entire conversation was the simplicity of how Coach Stoops built his program. He didn't try to overcomplicate anything. He knew he wanted coaches who were accomplished, high-character people. And he wanted tough players who loved football. Their offenses may have looked exotic but they didn't have a ton of plays installed. They focused on what they did and then practiced it relentlessly so that they would execute better than their opponents. I think there's something beautiful in the simplicity with how he's built his program and the results speak for themselves. Great players want to be coached - Jeremiah Smith, Adrian Peterson. What he looked for in players: They have to LOVE football. Need to be tough and physical. Someone like Dan Cody. From Oklahoma, was skinny, and nobody on the staff wanted to give him a scholarship, but Coach Stoops did, and he turned out to be a great player. Liked to keep local guys home. Off-season workouts create the culture of the team. "We won because we outworked everyone." The attitude of the national championship team - "They were tired of being kicked around." And "I shared with them the history of Oklahoma and let them know the way it should be. When we started, they were a losing team." Josh Heupel - The most valuable recruit ever for Coach Stoops. Mike Leach was a 1 of 1. An original. He seemed relaxed and casual, but he was also very demanding that they do it right. He was also focused on just a few plays instead of trying to do everything. FOCUS. Do what we do Wife Carol - Impressive leader at Mary Kay. Won a pink Cadillac 16 years in a row. National Sales Director. Life/Career Advice - Go hard, be tough, be true to yourself, enjoy the struggle, and look forward to the fight. Nothing great happens without going through struggles first.
