Zach sits down with Anna, a faculty member at the Relational Life Institute and one of his mentors, and her husband John, a self-described practitioner of life rather than therapy. Together, the three of them get into something that rarely happens on relationship podcasts: a real, textured, honest look at what it means to actually live relational principles inside a marriage, not just teach them. The episode turns on a fascinating contrast. Anna has been steeped in Relational Life Therapy for years, knows the language and the tools inside and out, and still finds herself slipping into covert control. John has no clinical training, no internet footprint, and no interest in marketing the work, but walks into every conversation with an intuitive grasp of what healthy relating requires. Zach presses both of them on this. What does doing the work actually mean when one partner has the vocabulary and the other just seems to live it? The answers are more interesting than either of them might have predicted. The centerpiece story is a moment from a joint retreat in Costa Rica, where Anna had to manage a minor household crisis back home without telling John what was happening. She kept things managed, kept things calm, and kept him in the dark, and then eventually had to reckon with the fact that her "helpfulness" had crossed over into exactly the pattern she spends her professional life helping couples dismantle. When she finally told him, his response was one of the most reparative moments she had experienced in their relationship. That single story opens into a much bigger conversation about the difference between protecting your partner and controlling the room, about what it costs to never let yourself be surprised by someone else's goodness. What sticks is this: the goal is not to never get off balance. It is to catch it sooner. Anna says it plainly and Zach echoes it with his now-running story about screaming at strangers in the Costco gas line. Nobody has figured this out. Nobody is immune. But some people are getting better at noticing, and this episode is 45 minutes of what that actually looks and sounds like in a real marriage.Key TakeawaysIntimacy requires level ground. You cannot have real closeness from a one-up or one-down position, whether that means superiority, caretaking, or control.Covert control often starts as kindness. What begins as "protecting" your partner can quietly become a way of managing your own anxiety about their reaction.Predicting a bad response can cost you a good one. When Anna stopped waiting for John to disappoint her and told him what was going on, she got one of the most reparative moments in their relationship. The work is not a destination you arrive at. It is the repeated, unglamorous act of noticing when you have drifted, and coming back.Doing the work is not the same as talking about the work. John's ability to intuit the relational principles without the clinical vocabulary challenges the assumption that people who read the books and say the right things are necessarily further along. How you show up solicits how your partner shows up. Bringing your grounded, adult self to an interaction invites the same from the person across from you. It is not a guarantee, but it raises the odds significantly."On a good day" is not the benchmark. The real growth shows up in what you do when it is a bad day and the old patterns are calling your name loudest.Repair is available more often than we let ourselves believe. The barrier is usually not the other person. It is the story we are already telling about how they are going to respond.Guest InfoAnna is a therapist, teacher, and faculty member at the Relational Life Institute. She is a practitioner and trainer in Relational Life Therapy, an approach developed by Terry Real. She references her use of RLT both in her clinical practice and in her own marriage. She is also Zach's mentor, a relationship he acknowledges directly during the episode.John is Anna's husband. He is not a clinician. He came to the relational principles through personal experience, yoga, mindfulness practice, and what he describes as a forced epiphany roughly a decade before this recording. His perspective as the non-therapist partner in a therapist-led framework is one of the central tensions the episode is built around.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Patrick K. O'Donnell reveals the dark trajectory of Lewis Powell, a ranger for Mosby who became a primary Lincolnconspirator working with John Wilkes Booth. Powell's transition from cavalryman to covert operative was facilitated by the Confederate Secret Service, which funded a sophisticated network of safe houses and couriers. Evidence suggests the plot to kidnap Lincoln was an open secret within certain Confederate circles; Mosby even positioned hundreds of men near the Potomac to act as a security force for the escape route. This shadow war represented the most dangerous and well-funded special operation of the entire conflict. (6)1865
Overthinking in a covert narcissistic relationship isn't a character flaw — it's what your brain does when it has learned, through real experience, that it cannot afford to relax. If you are in a relationship with a covert narcissist, you already know this feeling: lying awake at 2 a.m. replaying conversations, re-drafting texts, rehearsing arguments before they happen, scanning for a pattern that keeps shifting the moment you think you've found it. In this episode, Renee Swanson of the Covert Narcissism Podcast breaks down why the overthinking mind develops in narcissistic relationships, how covert narcissists deliberately create confusion to keep you uncertain, compliant, and focused on them, and why your brain stopped chasing clarity and started chasing relief instead. Renee also explores what changes when your children begin showing the same hypervigilant patterns, and — most importantly — what it actually feels like when a mind shaped by narcissistic abuse finally lands somewhere safe. If you have been told you are too sensitive, too reactive, or that you think too much, this episode is for you. Long before Colombia qualified for the 1994 World Cup, Pablo Escobar and the Cali Cartel had already turned professional football into a functioning covert infrastructure, using club ownership, player financing, and gambling network penetration to launder money, manage public perception, and extend territorial influence behind the most watched sporting event on the planet. The World Cup amplified every dimension of that operation, giving cartel networks a globally visible asset to manipulate while intelligence operatives embedded within the sport tracked loyalties, enforced compliance, and eliminated threats with the same precision applied to their military campaigns. This episode dissects how the tournament functioned as an unwitting stage for narco statecraft, what the intelligence architecture behind Colombian football actually looked like, and how the murder of Andrés Escobar became the moment the curtain slipped and the covert structure behind the World Cup dream was briefly visible to the world.
Covert narcissism and high control religion follow the same rulebook — and if you grew up in one before entering the other, this episode will explain why it all felt so familiar. In this deeply personal episode, Renee Swanson shares her own experience navigating both a high control religious upbringing and a covert narcissistic marriage — and the moment in a counseling office when she realized the two were running on the exact same operating system. The same rules. The same tools. The same results. This episode is not about turning anyone away from faith or church. Many people find genuine healing, community, and support through their faith — and that experience varies from person to person and congregation to congregation. This conversation is specifically about high control religious environments and the impact they can have on a vulnerable nervous system. In this episode: How high control religious environments train the fawn response into you before you ever enter a relationship The specific rules of a high control church — and how each one mirrors the rules of a covert narcissistic relationship How negative emotions get labeled as spiritual failure — and what that does to your ability to trust your own feelings Why the covert narcissistic relationship felt familiar rather than alarming How fawning stops being a response and becomes a reflex Speaking directly to both those still inside a religious CN relationship and those who have already left Whether you are still inside or have already left — this episode was made for you. In this debrief episode of Narcissist Apocalypse, Brandon Chadwick debriefs Porsha's story and explores how emotional neglect can be mistaken for independence, especially when a child learns to disappear instead of asking for care. Brandon discusses the lost child role, parentification, covert incest, sexualized boundary violations, enabling, alcoholism as an excuse for abuse, and the painful family message of “you know how he is.” This episode is a reflection on the child who was forgotten, emotionally used, and left to manage the weather of an unsafe home. *** CONTENT WARNING - This episode discusses covert incest (non-touching child sexual abuse) and physical abuse. *** Click if you want to be a guest on our survivor story podcast, please send us an email at narcissistapocalypse@pm.me Click on the title to read about Coercive Control as Care: Signs & Patterns Sign up to our Domestic Violence Newsletter Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. And when the approval doesn't come from your partner — you take it out on them.

Covert narcissistic abuse doesn't just hurt you — it rewires you. In this episode, Renee breaks down why your fight/flight response gradually turned into fawning, and why that isn't a character flaw — it's survival. You'll learn why fight, flight, freeze, and fawn aren't random reactions. They're a hierarchy based on how much self-advocacy you feel you have. And in a covert narcissistic relationship, that self-advocacy gets quietly, systematically dismantled — until fawning becomes your automatic default. In this episode: Why the four trauma responses are actually a hierarchy of self-advocacy How covert narcissists punish fight, flight, and freeze — and reward fawning Why so many survivors grew up already partway down this hierarchy How a controlling or narcissistic parent trained you for this dynamic long before you met your partner Why religious upbringings can add a powerful layer of conditioning — and why this topic is getting its own full episode Why you keep ending up in narcissistic relationships — and why it has nothing to do with bad luck Why healthy relationships can actually feel uncomfortable to a nervous system wired for chaos This is episode one of a three-part series. Episode two will look at what this hierarchy looks like in your day-to-day life. Episode three will explore what it actually means to start rebuilding your self-advocacy. If you've ever asked yourself "why do I keep ending up here?" — this episode is for you. Learn more about Renee's coaching program at covertnarcissism.com. Dr. Mark Bonta reads the obituary section every weekend. Not morbidly. But because when he cares for patients in the hospital, he sees them in a blue gown having their worst day. He never knows their life, their legacy, or how they wanted to be remembered. The obituary fills in the gaps.Katie Engelhart, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and contributing writer at The New York Times Magazine, does something similar. She finds the stories medicine doesn't tell. The ethical dilemmas playing out in ICUs and hospital rooms that the public never hears about. Medical aid in dying for eating disorders. Covert consciousness in patients diagnosed as vegetative. Dementia patients timing their own deaths before losing capacity to consent. Her work challenges the way medicine operates. Not the science. But the values, the judgments, the institutional culture that shapes standards of care without public input. She spends months, sometimes years, with patients and families navigating impossible decisions. And she lets the stories stay messy because real life doesn't fit tidy narratives.Mark and Katie talk about how she finds the people whose stories need to be told, how she earns trust over months of conversations, and why she has respect for doctors and medical science but not deference to the way things are in medicine. If you've ever wondered how medical journalism actually works, why certain stories get told and others don't, or what happens when families navigate end-of-life decisions without the ethical support they need, this conversation will give you a behind-the-scenes look at one of the best medical writers working today.Katie Engelhart: https://www.katieengelhart.com/Episode Takeaways1. Standards of medical care are shaped by value judgments, ethics, institutional culture, and history — not just science and mathematics. The public is often unaware of why policies exist or how they came to be.2. Katie's reporting process involves months (sometimes years) of conversations, thousands of pages of medical records, and cross-referencing with family members and experts to verify every detail.3. Covert consciousness research shows that about 25 percent of patients presumed to be in vegetative states are actually aware and can perform tasks like imagining playing tennis, but families making decisions rarely have access to these tests.4. What "better" or "recovery" means to an ICU physician is often very different from what it means to a family member — even medical terms are shaped by values, not just facts.5. Katie finds people to profile by spending months building trust with providers, writing letters they can share with patients, and navigating institutional barriers that either support or block her work.6. The healthcare system lacks ethical support for patients making major moral decisions, leaving millions of people to face these choices alone even though their neighbors are going through the same thing.7. Patients will do their own research, and clinicians need to accept that and expand conversations to include it rather than dismissing skepticism as uninformed or pseudoscience.8. Choices that seem unfathomable from the outside become completely understandable when you spend time with the people making them and walk through their reasoning step by step.Episode Timestamps04:48 – Why Katie Is Drawn to Medical Writing08:24 – Telling Robert Munch's Dementia Story Without Making It About Dementia15:22 – Covert Consciousness: A Quarter of Vegetative Patients Are Actually Aware19:32 – The Ego and Humility Problem in Medicine22:56 – What "Better" Means to Doctors vs. Families28:17 – Finding the People Whose Stories Need to Be Told32:05 – How Katie Vets Sources and Verifies Information37:38 – The Existential Crisis of Our Own MortalityDISCLAMER >>>>>> The Ditch Lab Coat podcast serves solely for general informational purposes and does not serve as a substitute for professional medical services such as medicine or nursing. What if the most controlling relationship you've ever heard of isn't happening in a compound somewhere, but behind closed doors in an ordinary home? In this episode, Renee sits down with Rachel Bernstein, one of the country's leading cult interventionists and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 30 years of experience. Together they unpack one of the most eye-opening parallels in psychology: the stunning overlap between cult tactics and covert narcissistic relationships. If you've ever felt like you needed permission to exist in your own relationship — this episode will explain why. In this conversation, you'll discover: - Why a marriage or partnership can function as a "cult of two" - How covert narcissists use the same mind control techniques as cult leaders - Why intermittent gratification is just as addictive as gambling — and keeps you trapped - Why leaving feels like abandonment — and why that feeling is by design - How to start trusting your own inner voice again after years of gaslighting Rachel has worked with the Department of Justice, appeared in the Starz documentary Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult and Netflix series Unwell and How to Become a Cult Leader, and has likely spoken with more cult survivors than anyone in the history of her field. Since an EMP would wreck all of the electronics in vehicles, what EMP-safe vehicle would you guys choose to take into an EMP ridden world? You have 10 grand to spend. Go. Question from Mike in NH 1st: quick positive review for C&G, I've been carrying my CSX-E series in a Covert for a month now, so great. Thank you to Chris and company 2nd: At what point does a used pick up become too nice/collectible to use/carry? I recently purchased a S&W 640-2. I didn't know anything about it apart from it was in excellent condition, and that it was pre-Lock. I thought it was weird for a steel J-frame to be 38spl only. It turns out the -2 was only made 1997-99 for NYPD as an approved back-up/off duty weapon. So it's kind of rare. Thanks for the opinions and the great shows. -Mike in NH Question from Duke of Crude from Texas Duke of Crude Hey fam, Thanks for reading my question on episode 449 about carry guns and meth country. My definition for meth country is either: 1. Urban sprawls (ex. Tulsa, Memphis) where hard drug use is prevalent 2. Rural areas (ex. West Virginia) where high poverty creates new hard drugs and users But going back to my question on 44 special in particular. Why does no one make a 44spc+P? I was looking for something like 1000-1200 fps 200gr out of a 4in barrel and I could not find any factory loads or even Underwood ammo that makes +P rounds. I have a 329PD that I like, but you will snap your wrist before you get through an entire cylinder of factory load 44 magnum. I was looking at that new s&w nightguard 396 but with my mind blown on how anemic 44 special is, I think I might have to pass. Do ya ll have any recommendations on 44mag/ special revolvers for EDC carry? Question from amonymous texas from coward from Texas Where can I find ammo to fight robots? There's a company called roborounds (roborounds.com if you are not familiar) that has a lot of cool bullets you can fire from standard firearms. For instance one fragments iron filings to short out circuit boards and another one creates a localized EMP on impact. The fucking robots are coming and I need this ammo, but I can't find a place to buy it. I see a few online retailers who used to carry it. I tried contacting them and they won't get back to me. Probably because I'm a nobody. If these guys are done, is anyone else making anything similar? Second related question: what about drone defense rounds? They had some cool stuff for 12 ga shells, but I have seen similar stuff from other companies. Are there any specific ones you know of or recommend? -amonymous texas from coward Question from Anonymous Coward from Oregon From No one Your printers are always running. What are you guys printing? Except Jeremy. He don't mess with that nerd shit. Question from Jon W from Washington Jon W I unfortunately live behind enemy lines in Washington state. Years ago when they first became sponsors, I took you up on your advice and signed up for Second call Defense and felt reassured that they had my back if the worst day ever happened. Since that time, our now turd Ferguson governor who used to be the Attorney General made having said insurance illegal in Washington. My question is hypothetically if a person had a close relative in another state could they sign up for Second Call Defense Using that address? Why is it so hard to move on after covert narcissistic abuse? Why can betrayal trauma continue affecting you years—or even decades—later? In this powerful conversation, Renee Swanson sits down with betrayal trauma expert Dr. Debi Silber to explore the deep emotional, physical, and psychological impact of betrayal in covert narcissistic relationships. Dr. Debi explains why betrayal is a unique form of trauma, how Post Betrayal Syndrome affects survivors, and why healing from covert narcissistic abuse requires more than simply “moving on.” Together, Renee and Dr. Debi discuss the loss of trust, the breakdown of self, nervous system dysregulation, chronic symptoms, emotional triggers, and the patterns that keep survivors stuck for years. They also dive into the five stages of betrayal recovery and what true transformation looks like after emotional abuse. If you've struggled with self-doubt, rumination, hypervigilance, inability to trust, emotional exhaustion, or feeling like you lost yourself in a covert narcissistic relationship, this episode will help you understand why—and what healing can actually look like. In this Conflicted Conversation, Thomas speaks to journalist Tim Weiner about his new history of the CIA in the 21st century, The Mission, and about the enduring tension between intelligence gathering and covert action. Drawing on four decades of reporting, Weiner argues that the CIA's greatest failures arise when it abandons its core purpose of understanding the world in favour of trying to change it. Weiner explains: How he began covering the CIA during the Reagan era and what drew him into intelligence reporting Why the CIA is best understood as an instrument of presidential power, not an independent actor The agency's post–Cold War collapse and its loss of mission before 9/11 How the War on Terror transformed the CIA into a global counterterrorism and paramilitary force The origins, logic, and consequences of torture, black sites, and the failure of interrogation The intelligence failures behind the Iraq War and how ‘facts were fitted around the policy' The rise of drone warfare under Obama and the normalization of targeted killing Covert operations from Peru to Syria, including the limits and dangers of programs like TIMBER SYCAMORE The difference between espionage and covert action—and why only the former can prevent war and save lives Why the greatest danger today is a president who ignores intelligence while using the CIA's coercive power Join the Conflicted Community here: https://conflicted.supportingcast.fm Find Conflicted on X: https://x.com/MHconflicted And Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MHconflicted And Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/conflictedpod And YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sdlF1mY5t4 Learn more about your ad choices. Something is on the moon. What one photo analyst discovered changed everything. For years, people have claimed to see buildings, objects, and even living things on the moon's surface. As skeptics have pointed out, though, it's impossible to tell from these viral images alone that there really are structures there—when they could just be grey blobs. Covert teams in combat situations are tasked with combing over blurry aerial photos with military precision. They're trained to quickly identify visual information you and I can't: the corner of a structure; a manmade object; or something hiding a terrorist compound, secret base, and other things hidden to those who don't have the eyes to see. What if those same photo analysis techniques could be applied to images of the moon? That's where Allan Sturm changed everything. As a civilian hobbyist and expert photo editor, he spent thousands and thousands of hours analyzing moon photos. In the process, he developed specific techniques that left these military men astonished when they saw what he was doing—because it allowed him to identify spatial relationships between objects the way they did, and generate real data about what's on the lunar surface. Allan's knowledge of camera technology and photo editing is mindblowing as he explains how to look at moon photos. This may be some of the most amazing technical information Metaphysical has ever dived into, way beyond any sensational conversation about clickbait moon images. Join investigative researcher Rob Counts and remote viewer John Vivanco as they interview professional photo analyst and author Allan Sturm. Have you ever felt like something was wrong in your relationship but couldn't find the words to describe it? In this episode of the Covert Narcissism Podcast Community Chat, I sit down with David, who spent 17 years married to a covert narcissist before finally being able to name what he was experiencing. David shares how it started with recognizing passive aggressive behavior, how that led him down the rabbit hole of covert narcissism, and what happened when he finally said it out loud to someone he trusted. We talk about why covert narcissistic abuse is so hard to explain to others, what it feels like when you aren't fully believed, and how saying it out loud is often the moment the healing begins. David also opens up about life after divorce, co-parenting with a covert narcissist, and the very real challenge of protecting your children from narcissistic manipulation while staying in a healed and grounded place yourself. If you are struggling to name what you are experiencing in your relationship, feel like no one around you truly understands, or are navigating co-parenting after narcissistic abuse, this episode is for you. Topics covered in this episode: Recognizing covert narcissistic abuse in marriage Passive aggressive behavior as an early warning sign Why covert narcissistic abuse is hard to explain to family and friends What happens when you first say it out loud Healing after divorce from a narcissist Co-parenting with a covert narcissist Protecting children from narcissistic manipulation Trusting your gut when something feels wrong To join future CNG Community Chats, visit https://www.covertnarcissism.com/community-chats THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BY RENEE SWANSON, COVERT NARCISSISM PODCAST, AND CNG LIFE COACHING IS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY AND IS NOT TO BE USED FOR DIAGNOSIS PURPOSES AND NOT INTENDED TO BE A SUBSTITUTE FOR CLINICAL CARE. Weather gets talked about a lot in duck circles—and for good reason. It affects everything, from breeding habitat to migration timing to what your mornings in the blind look like. On this episode of The Standard Sportsman, the guys sit down with Arkansas native, chief meteorologist, and passionate duck hunter Skot Covert to cut through the noise and talk about what's really going on. They dig into the prolonged drought gripping much of the South, what an incoming El Niño could mean for winter, and how both may shape the season ahead. Skot also gets into why weather on social media is often overhyped, how forecasting actually works behind the scenes, and which weather apps are actually worth trusting when duck season rolls around.>>>Thanks to our sponsors: Tom Beckbe, Lile Real Estate, Perfect Limit Outdoors, Purina Pro Plan, Sitka Gear, Greenhead: The Arkansas Duck Hunting Magazine, Noah Perry-Raymond James, The Waterfowl Management Academy, Create the X, and Ducks Unlimited.Send us Fan MailAll Rights Reserved. People pleasing is not kindness. It is a covert God complex installed in childhood that keeps you stuck in resentment, exhaustion, and self-betrayal. In this video, Kenny Weiss exposes the engine underneath chronic people pleasing and walks you through his Five-Step No Process for finally setting boundaries without shame, collapse, or self-abandonment.You will learn why every boundary book on your shelf has failed you, why saying yes when you mean no is one of the most manipulative things a human being can do, and why your inability to say no is not a communication problem but a shame wound burned into your nervous system before you had words for it. Kenny names the survival persona behind chronic people pleasing, the disempowered codependent and the adapted wounded child, and shows how the Worst Day Cycle™ keeps you trapped in patterns that look like generosity on the outside and feel like resentment on the inside.People pleasing is a survival strategy formed in childhood when a child was forced to manage the emotions of unwell adults. Kenny Weiss calls this a covert God complex because the parentified child develops a quiet, devastating belief that they are responsible for how everyone around them feels and that they are also the only one who can fix it. The Worst Day Cycle™, Trauma to Fear to Shame to Denial, is the unconscious blueprint that keeps people pleasing running on autopilot for decades. The Five-Step No Process is the corrective protocol Kenny Weiss teaches inside the Authentic Self Cycle™. Step one is emotional authenticity. Step two is naming the value you are protecting. Step three is separating your responsibility from theirs. Step four is the two magic phrases, which are, let me think about it and I'll get back to you, and, I've thought about it and it just doesn't work for me. Step five is holding the boundary without collapse. The process addresses the inner child first and the language last, which is why it works when generic boundary scripts have failed. The two magic phrases inside the Five-Step No Process protect the nervous system, prevent over-explanation, and stop manipulation. The first phrase buys time so the slow processor inside you can run three diagnostic questions, will I keep score, will I throw it in their face later, will I resent them for it. The second phrase ends the negotiation by keeping the boundary entirely about you, which removes anything for the other person to argue with.Kenny Weiss is a relationship, communication, and childhood trauma recovery specialist and the creator of the Worst Day Cycle™, the Authentic Self Cycle™, and the Emotional Authenticity Method™. He works with high-functioning, emotionally exhausted adults who have tried therapy, books, coaching, and mindset work and still feel stuck in repeating codependent patterns. His Five-Step No Process for boundaries is taught inside his individual and couples programs.TOPICS COVERED: people pleasing, how to say no, covert God complex, codependence, disempowered codependent, adapted wounded child, survival persona, Worst Day Cycle, Authentic Self Cycle, Emotional Authenticity Method, Kenny Weiss, parentification, shame, childhood trauma, emotional blueprint, boundary scripts, two magic phrases, Five-Step No Process, saying no without guilt, people pleaser recovery, codependency recovery, emotional adulthood, self-abandonmentLINKS:Website: https://kennyweiss.netBook — Your Journey to Success: https://kennyweiss.net/bookEmotional Blueprint Starter Course (Individual): https://kennyweiss.net/coursesRelationship Starter Course (Couples): https://kennyweiss.net/couples1:1 Coaching with Kenny: https://kennyweiss.net/coaching#PeoplePleasing #Codependency #BoundariesWithoutGuilt #KennyWeiss #ChildhoodTrauma

In this episode, we explore one of the most confusing and disorienting dynamics of covert narcissistic abuse: the rewriting of reality. This isn't obvious gaslighting or explosive denial. It's subtle, calm, and often presented in a way that makes you question your own perception over time. If you've ever walked away from a conversation feeling off, only to later be told you misunderstood, overreacted, or “took it the wrong way,” this episode will help you understand what's really happening beneath the surface. We'll break down how covert narcissists distort the truth, how repetition reinforces their version of events, and why you may find yourself doubting your own memory, emotions, and experiences. We'll also explore how these narratives can spread to friends and family, leaving you feeling even more isolated and unsure of yourself. Most importantly, this episode will help you begin reclaiming your own narrative—learning to trust what you feel, recognize what's real for you, and step out of the confusion. If you've ever looked back on a relationship and thought, “Why didn't I see it sooner?”—you're not alone. And more importantly, you're not wrong. In this episode, we explore a powerful truth about covert narcissistic abuse: your body often recognizes what your mind cannot yet explain. While you may now understand the patterns, manipulation, and emotional abuse, your nervous system may still feel unsettled—and there's a reason for that. We'll break down the connection between the subconscious, the body, and the nervous system, and why healing cannot happen through thinking alone. You'll learn why your body stayed heightened, how self-blame keeps you stuck, and how to begin rebuilding trust with yourself in a way that actually works. This episode also introduces a simple, practical tool—Notice, Name, Need, Next—to help you reconnect with your body and start responding to what it's been trying to tell you all along. If you're tired of overthinking, second-guessing yourself, or feeling like something is still “off” even though you understand everything, this episode will help you take the next step in your healing journey. There is often a moment in covert narcissistic relationships when something finally shifts. The confusion begins to clear, the patterns start to make sense, and you realize that what you've been experiencing has a name. But that moment rarely comes all at once. In this Community Chat, Renee is joined by Jenny, who shares her experience of what it looked like when things finally clicked for her after more than four decades in her marriage. What started as small realizations over time eventually led to a moment of undeniable clarity—one that changed everything. Together, they explore the gradual awakening that so many survivors of covert narcissistic abuse go through, the internal back-and-forth between clarity and doubt, and the emotional impact of finally seeing things for what they are. If you've ever questioned your reality, wondered why it took so long to see it, or found yourself moving between “I know” and “maybe I'm wrong,” this conversation will resonate deeply. This episode is a reminder that clarity is not a single moment—it's a process. And you are not alone in it. Episode Notes This episode is part two of a special bonus series I'm sharing from another podcast that I think many of you will deeply connect with. The show is called Shit That Goes On in Our Heads, hosted by G-Rex and Dirty Skittles. It's raw, honest, and unfiltered—centered around real conversations on mental health, trauma, healing, and what it actually looks like to do this work in real life. There's no pretending, no polishing things up… just truth, humor, and powerful insights that meet you exactly where you are. This short series I'm sharing is an extra set of episodes outside of my normal content because the conversation is just that important. In this part two episode, we go deeper into what healthy boundaries actually look like after trauma—and why so many of us lost our sense of self in the first place, especially within covert narcissistic dynamics. If you missed part one, I highly recommend going back and listening to that first. It sets the foundation for everything we're talking about here. And as you listen, notice what resonates. This conversation isn't just about understanding—it's about beginning to reconnect with yourself in a way you may not have been taught before. If you've ever asked yourself, “Why didn't I see it sooner?” after being in a covert narcissistic relationship, you are not alone. The truth is, you didn't miss the signs—your body was recognizing them long before your mind could make sense of what was happening. In this episode, we break down the confusing experience of cognitive dissonance in covert narcissistic abuse—why your body felt anxious, tense, or unsafe while your mind continued to justify, minimize, or explain away the behavior. You'll learn how your nervous system detects emotional threat outside of your conscious awareness, and why this disconnect between what you feel and what you believe can keep you stuck far longer than you expected. We also explore how conditioning, people-pleasing patterns, and the desire to maintain connection can lead you to override your intuition—and why that is not a failure, but a survival response. If you've struggled with shame, self-doubt, or confusion after leaving a covert narcissist, this episode will help you understand what was really happening beneath the surface—and how to begin rebuilding trust with yourself moving forward. If you're ready to take the next step beyond understanding and start applying this work in your own life, I invite you to explore coaching program and resources at https://www.covertnarcissism.com. The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
In this episode, I sit down with Kelvin Davis — fashion trailblazer, author of Be a Good Man Not a Nice Guy, creator of Notoriously Dapper, one of the first Black big-and-tall models for Gap and Target, and dad of two daughters. This one covers a wide range of territory — style, masculinity, nice guy syndrome, divorce, co-parenting, and raising daughters as a single dad — and somehow manages to be one of the most fun and most real conversations we've had on this show. We start with style — and not the surface-level kind. Kelvin breaks down why how you dress is actually a statement about how you see yourself, how the right fit and color unlocks a level of confidence that can't be faked, and why most guys are unknowingly dressing for a version of themselves they no longer are. Then we get into the heart of the show: the difference between a good man and a nice guy. Kelvin draws the line clearly — nice guys are motivated by approval and the avoidance of conflict, good men are grounded in purpose, principles, and accountability. He gets deeply honest about his own nice guy patterns, including a porn addiction and seeking emotional connection outside his marriage, and how staying in a relationship he knew wasn't right ended up costing him and his daughters dearly. We dig into his divorce — how the girls responded, the pressure to pick sides, the importance of therapy, and what happened when his daughters moved to Tennessee and their relationship actually deepened over FaceTime. And we close with a powerful conversation about what Kelvin believes a dad's real job is: not to be liked, but to get your kids ready for the world. Timeline Summary [0:00] Introduction to the Dad Edge mission and the movement to raise leaders of families and communities [1:01] Introducing Kelvin Davis — style, Notoriously Dapper, big and tall modeling, and Be a Good Man Not a Nice Guy [4:58] Kelvin's backstory — knowing from age eight that fashion was his calling and going back to speak at his old elementary school [9:23] Larry's story with style expert Tanner Gazi — and the fat kid still living inside him who wears dark colors to hide [12:58] What style actually is — and why the right fit unlocks confidence that cannot be faked [14:03] How to build a base wardrobe — know your true size, nail the fit, then add accessories to elevate everything [16:52] What happens when you walk into a room dressed confidently — including the people who love it and the ones who resent it [19:53] How Kelvin learned to stop caring what people think — and why we all care to some degree [23:50] Introducing Be a Good Man Not a Nice Guy — how Kelvin defines the difference [24:36] Nice guys are motivated by approval and conflict avoidance — good men are grounded in purpose and values [27:25] Covert contracts, people pleasing, and why nice guys always eventually fall apart [29:01] Kelvin's nice guy symptoms — avoiding accountability, gaslighting, saying yes to everyone at the cost of himself [31:33] The one place Kelvin's nice guy syndrome never showed up — fatherhood [33:34] Why dads who weren't loved well as kids tend to over-serve their kids — and why holding the line is still the right move [35:08] What Kelvin's daughters would have picked up on if he'd stayed in a marriage where he wasn't showing up as his true self [37:03] The guilt and shame of a pregnancy that forced a marriage — and admitting the foundation was never really there [40:37] Seeking emotional connection outside the marriage — and the fear that keeps nice guys trapped [41:38] The unexpected peace of living alone for the first time after the divorce [43:37] How the girls responded when he moved out — the pressure to pick sides and what Kelvin told them [45:32] Kids hear everything — the damage done when adults talk about each other in front of their children [46:22] Therapy for the girls starting in 2022 — what the therapist revealed about the older daughter's emotional burden [47:31] His job was to carry his own anger — not put it on his daughters [49:28] His 15-year-old's personality emerging — meeting her where she is and becoming more of a collaborator [50:43] Since the girls moved to Tennessee, their relationship has deepened more over FaceTime than it ever did in person [52:08] Creating psychological safety — how connection is the foundation of all influence as a dad [53:28] When mom was more friend than parent — and why the oldest pushes back on her but never on Kelvin [55:46] My job is not to be your friend — it's to get you ready for the world [57:21] Larry's 18-year-old in the 1,000 pound club — and the moment your kid surpasses you is the moment you know you did your job Five Key Takeaways Style is not vanity — it's communication. How you dress tells the world and yourself who you are. If you've been hiding behind dark colors and ill-fitting clothes, ask yourself what you're really trying to hide. The difference between a nice guy and a good man is what drives them. Nice guys chase approval and avoid conflict. Good men are grounded in purpose, values, and accountability — and people feel that difference. Your kids are watching everything — including how you treat their mother, who you are when your guard is down, and whether the man at home is the same man everyone else gets. They will model it. Your job as a dad is not to be liked — it's to get your kids ready for the world. That means holding the line, teaching respect, and preparing them for authority figures, hard seasons, and life without you. Psychological safety is what makes your kids come to you. Connection comes first. Without it, you have no influence — no matter how many rules you set or sacrifices you make. Kelvin Davis built a brand around showing up as your true self — unapologetically, consistently, and confidently. But it took a failed marriage, a divorce, and years of self-work to get there. And out of all of it, he's built a deeper relationship with his daughters than he ever had when they lived under the same roof. That's what happens when a man stops performing and starts leading. If this episode resonated with you, share it with a dad who needs to hear it. Go out and live legendary.

What if leaving the relationship doesn't mean you're free? In this episode, we continue The Vampire Effect series and explore what happens after prolonged exposure to covert narcissistic abuse—when you feel numb, disconnected, and like something inside of you has changed. Many survivors describe feeling “dead inside,” questioning who they are, and wondering if they've lost themselves completely. Using the powerful metaphor of Dracula, we break down the concept of becoming “undead”—not fully yourself, but not gone either—and why this emotional numbness is not a sign that something is wrong with you, but a sign that your mind and body have been trying to protect you. We also dive into the unsettling reality of how the narcissist's voice can continue to live inside your thoughts, shaping your perceptions long after the relationship shifts or even ends. If you've ever questioned your reactions, felt disconnected from yourself, or wondered why you can't just “move on,” this episode will help you understand what's really happening beneath the surface—and why healing is not about fixing yourself, but about reclaiming what was never truly lost. What if covert narcissistic abuse doesn't feel like an attack… but like a slow drain? In this episode, we explore The Vampire Effect—a powerful metaphor that reveals how covert narcissists gradually consume your energy, clarity, and sense of self without you even realizing it. Through the lens of Dracula, you'll begin to see how manipulation, gaslighting, and emotional exhaustion create a dynamic where you become weaker while they appear stronger. We'll break down the subtle ways this happens, why you may have felt confused or “sick” instead of recognizing the abuse, and how these relationships can feel like a labyrinth you were never meant to escape. If you've ever wondered why you felt drained, lost, or unable to leave… this episode will help you understand why—and begin to take your power back.
