One Mom's Story of Living With Anxiety and ADHD

Mother Plus Podcast

ADHD, high functioning anxiety and perfectionist-based procrastination go together like peanut butter, jelly and banana. We're former hard-working, top-of our class, good girls who masked our high functioning anxiety our whole lives, and then we became mothers, and the masks are falling apart. They are WORN OUT. And we just can't keep them together anymore.Today, I'm going to share a story with you about motherhood and anxiety so you can KNOW for sure that there are others out there like you. You're not alone. And either am I. “My other daughter” was originally read on stage at The Boulder Theater for the national show, Listen To Your Mother. Former Chicago-girl, Stacey Hutson, now lives  in Golden with her husband and two still slightly helpless daughters, ages 4 and 6. Stacey wanted to be a mom her whole life. Which is why she was so confused when motherhood was not the rainbows and sunshine she always imagined it would be. Her nervous system was overwhelmed, her house was a disaster, and she couldn't understand why she was so nostalgic for her fun, spontaneous pre-mom life. That's why she created the Mother Plus Podcast with Stephanie Sprenger to give a voice to the too much moms who feel like they are failing at motherhood, and don't want to fail anymore. Stacey discovered LTYM five years ago when she needed it most. She made a promise to herself that night that she would one day be in the show. Four shows later, she has been here every year, pinching herself, alongside the most incredible cast of women. If you're looking for your people -- the ones who get your time blindness, always-late-ness,  obsessive, excited, but easily distracted nature -- then please join us in the ADHD Moms Club. This THURSDAY, May 23rd, we'll be having our first virtual Body Doubling Meetup. Bring your laundry, bring your bills, bring your kids. It's super casual. The idea is that we will accomplish much more together than apart. Impostor syndrome for creatives is a real thing—today we approach it through the angle of writing, and our tendency to say, "I'm not a real writer."What pulls you to feel the need to write/create/sing/paint? Many of us do these things because we simply feel like we have to, like there is something inside that needs to get out—it's a catharsis. We talk about the obstacles that hold us back from claiming our titles—"I am a writer/painter/dancer"—and prevent us from putting our creations out into the world. The inner critic is a common saboteur for creative moms: "Who am I to share this? This has been done before; this is taking time away from my family/work/housework..."We are excited to introduce you to the Emerging Writers Essay Workshop—a two-part Zoom workshop where we guide you through the process of creating a story and get it out into the world. Creating in community brings accountability, inspiration, and support—ditch the excuses and join us in November. Steph reads an essay she wrote last spring, and describes the process of writing and publishing it in Mutha Magazine. In this Stace and Steph episode, we discuss writing, impostor syndrome, and our tendency as mothers to diminish our talents, succumb to our inner critic, and find excuses to prevent us from doing the thing we feel pulled to do. We are teaming up with Steph's LTYM co-producer Megan Vos to bring you a two-part virtual essay workshop on November 16th and 30th. The workshops take place from 7-8:30 pm MST but will be recorded for those who can't attend live. Learn about what to expect from The Emerging Writers Workshop and sign up before November 9th to snag early bird pricing. Becoming Your Best Version
A Conversation with Moms & ... Podcast Creators, Susanne Kerns and Missy Stevens

Becoming Your Best Version

Susanne Kerns is a podcaster and humor writer living in Austin, Texas with her husband and two children. Her work has been featured in Scary Mommy, Redbook, Today Parents and several parenting anthologies, including the NYT bestselling I Just Want to Pee Alone series. She co-produced, and performed in, the "Listen to Your Mother" show in Austin, Texas. She's currently writing her first non-fiction book to help other women to deal with the identity crisis that can come with giving up your career to become a stay-at-home mom. She co-hosts the Mom & ... Podcast with Missy Stevens, which also focuses on helping moms define themselves outside of "mom." In 2017, she started the group, "Informed Parents of Austin," to advocate for LGBTQIA+ students, families and staff in her school district. Susanne uses her "privilege of safety" to be the megaphone for children in the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as for their parents. When people do not feel safe enough to speak, Susanne volunteers to speak for them. Her efforts have paid off. For example, her local school district will be teaching an inclusive, science-backed sex education program this term. Susanne works hard to use her core values to inform her life decisions. Missy Stevens is a writer, foster child advocate and podcaster. Her past life includes stints as a corporate community relations manager and non-profit communications writer. These days, Missy is an aspiring novelist, slowly working on endless revisions of her first manuscript. Her work has been featured in local and national online publications, as well as in the stage production, "Listen to Your Mother." Missy, a native Austinite, lives with her husband, two sons, two dogs and "too many plants. Just kidding. There is no such thing as too many plants." Missy admonishes listeners to not wait to do what you want to do. At-home moms can start before their children leave home to hone their skills or build new ones. She uses her considerable skills as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) to help children who cannot speak for themselves. It is emotional work, and Missy understands that she cannot take care of herself or others without proper sleep and rest. "I can't do what really matters to me if I don't take rest time. I unpacked a lot of guilt over that." Missy--and we--are better off when we practice self-care. These two women are inspiring and insightful each week on their fantastic Mom & ... Podcast. In this episode I am talking with Ann Imig, the founder of the nationwide storytelling series and book LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER. A decade later LTYM continues Giving Motherhood A Microphone on stages all over the country (60 cities to date, and counting!).  "In 2010 Ann decided Mother's Day was lacking; instead of being solely a retail-driven holiday, the focus should be family.  By brining our community together to share personal stories abut our mothers, we could get back to the core of why mothering is important. That year she organized a live reading, and so "Listen To Your Mother" was born. Like the live readings, the anthology Listen To Your Mother is a brutally honest look at modern motherhood.  It showcases the experiences of ordinary people of different races, genders, and ages and takes readers on a journey through mother in all of its complexity, diversity and humor.  ...the contributors' stories share their experiences with adoption, assimilation, and emptying nests; first-time motherhood, foster parenting, and infertility; LGBTQ parenting, special needs parenting, and surrogacy; step-mothering, never mothering, and mothering through illness. Whether you are one, have one, or know one, Listen To Your Mother is an emotional whirlwind that is guaranteed to entertain, amuse, and enlighten." - Listen To Your Mother, What She Said Then, What We're Saying Now, edited by Ann Imig Ann is an also an award-winning writer, speaker, and performer who spends most of her time signing permission slips and sweeping up cat litter. www.annimig.com Listen To Your Mother: What She Said Then, What We're Saying Now, edited by Ann Imig

Jenny's made a career of helping as many people as possible. As the former head of regional chapters of the YWCA, Head Start, Susan G Komen for the Cure, and the Lakeland Health Foundation, JENNY MINER is a dedicated advocate for women, LGBT, victims of domestic violence, racism, child abuse, and disadvantaged minorities in southwest Michigan. Yeah, but she grew up an upper class white girl in a nice leafy suburb of Grand Rapids. And currently she’s Executive Director of Water Street Glassworks, a nonprofit school for the arts in Benton Harbor. Huh? Fear not, she’ll explain it all for us. Also this week: Vacation is over and we’re both still coping with Michigan State’s shocking ouster from the NCAA Tournament. March Madness, indeed. Maybe a visit to a Russian bathhouse for a rubdown from a guy named Vasili will help…or attending Easter “Ass Mass.” Kelsch needs all the help he can get since this podcast is now affecting his day job. JENNY MINER Jenny serves on Benton Harbor’s Downtown Development Authority, is treasurer of the Twin City Players local theatre group, and was selected to participate in the first nationwide Listen to Your Mother program in 2015 (feel inadequate yet?). She’s also a certified grant writer, a non-profit consultant, a wife, and the mother of two teenage girls.
