Hello #AmWriters! This week, I'm answering a bunch of questions we received via amwritingpodcast@gmail.com and our #AmWriting Facebook group. Here's to flattened learning curves! * I just got my first speaking inquiry. How do I know how much to ask for?* Someone asked me to provide video content for a conference/summit/virtual event. What should I charge?* What's all this about affiliate codes and revenue sharing for conferences?* What reference books would you recommend for writing nonfiction?* It's time to ask for blurbs for my book! How do I figure out who should blurb? How do I ask? Can someone quoted in my book blurb my book? * If I quote myself in my own book is that plagiarism? What if I really need to use that quote, how do I do it?* I've been asked to speak but I'm freaked out by my time slot/some other challenge to audience numbers. How do I get people to stay and listen?* What are the “marketing materials” you keep talking about for events and where did you get all of it?* Scam alert! See also “I Got Scammed So You Don't Have To” by Jen Mann of People I Want to Punch in the Throat. Hey writers. I'm Jennie Nash, founder and CEO of Author Accelerator. It's back to school time, which means it's a great time to start training to become a book coach. By this time next year, you could be certified and out there helping writers bring their books to life- even if you're not a published author yourself. Take our quiz, The 10 Characteristics Of a Great Book Coach, to find out if you have what it takes to become a great book coach. Visit bookcoaches.com/characteristics-quiz that's the clunkiest URL ever so let me say it again: bookcoaches.com/characteristics-quiz We'll also put it in the show notes so you know you're going to the right place.Hey readers—KJ here. This episode of #AmWriting is brought to you by my latest, Playing the Witch Card. I wrote this at a moment when I needed more magic in my life—but it turned out to be a book about how until we know who we are and what makes us happy, even magic doesn't help. My main character, Flair, is a total control freak who fears the chaos created by her family deck of Tarot cards and the cookies it inspires her to make until she decides that she can harness their power to control the world and people around her—but that's not what the cards are for at all. I was inspired by what I see as the real magic of Tarot cards—and tea leaves and palm reading and every form of oracle: they help us to see and understand our own stories. As someone for whom stories are pretty much everything, I love that. You can buy Playing the Witch Card on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Bookshop.org and my local indie—and I hope you'll love it too. Susanne Kerns is a podcaster and humor writer living in Austin, Texas with her husband and two children. Her work has been featured in Scary Mommy, Redbook, Today Parents and several parenting anthologies, including the NYT bestselling I Just Want to Pee Alone series. She co-produced, and performed in, the "Listen to Your Mother" show in Austin, Texas. She's currently writing her first non-fiction book to help other women to deal with the identity crisis that can come with giving up your career to become a stay-at-home mom. She co-hosts the Mom & ... Podcast with Missy Stevens, which also focuses on helping moms define themselves outside of "mom." In 2017, she started the group, "Informed Parents of Austin," to advocate for LGBTQIA+ students, families and staff in her school district. Susanne uses her "privilege of safety" to be the megaphone for children in the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as for their parents. When people do not feel safe enough to speak, Susanne volunteers to speak for them. Her efforts have paid off. For example, her local school district will be teaching an inclusive, science-backed sex education program this term. Susanne works hard to use her core values to inform her life decisions. Missy Stevens is a writer, foster child advocate and podcaster. Her past life includes stints as a corporate community relations manager and non-profit communications writer. These days, Missy is an aspiring novelist, slowly working on endless revisions of her first manuscript. Her work has been featured in local and national online publications, as well as in the stage production, "Listen to Your Mother." Missy, a native Austinite, lives with her husband, two sons, two dogs and "too many plants. Just kidding. There is no such thing as too many plants." Missy admonishes listeners to not wait to do what you want to do. At-home moms can start before their children leave home to hone their skills or build new ones. She uses her considerable skills as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) to help children who cannot speak for themselves. It is emotional work, and Missy understands that she cannot take care of herself or others without proper sleep and rest. "I can't do what really matters to me if I don't take rest time. I unpacked a lot of guilt over that." Missy--and we--are better off when we practice self-care. These two women are inspiring and insightful each week on their fantastic Mom & ... Podcast. Some days you think you've got this aging thing under control and others it brings you to your knees. It's a roller coaster ride. Am I right? But knowing there are other women just like you makes it bearable. So does having a sense of humor about it. Author Jen Mann was motivated to write her hysterical book Midlife Bites: Anyone Else Falling Apart, Or Is It Just Me? after she had a midlife crisis that kicked her in the ass. She even started an active Facebook community where middle-age women can speak openly about their journey ... because we are far from alone. Clearly. In this episode, Jen and I discuss what inspired her to write the book, why she believes this generation of midlifers won't age quietly, why she decided to be so candid about everything from sprouting hairs in unsuspecting places to scheduling sex with her husband, how and why she stepped out of her comfort zone, how she changed her perspective on the whole aging process, and so much more. Kimberly's guest today is Jen Mann, author of the New York Times bestseller People I Want to Punch in the Throat and editor of the New York Times bestselling I Just Want to Pee Alone series. In an attempt to deal with the resulting range of emotions and physical changes in midlife, Jen posted a completely honest now-viral post, “Anyone Else Falling Apart Or Is It Just Me?” Jen used the thousands of responses she got, along with many of her own experiences to write her new book MIDLIFE BITES. A cross between a humor collection and a self-help guide, women ages 40-60 everywhere can explore subjects that may have been taboo in the past. As Jen likes to say, this is NOT your mother's midlife crisis book, where things get swept under the rug and “nice women” don't talk about those kinds of things.

"I love writing. I love telling stories. I love making people feel like they're not alone." Zibby is joined by New York Times bestselling author, blogger, and very funny woman Jen Mann to talk about her latest book, Midlife Bites. Jen explains how this project grew out of a blog post about her midlife crisis that went viral, why there is now nothing in her life she is unwilling to write about, and what she has been reading lately (hint: it made Zibby blush). Zibby also reads some of her favorite passages and shares the ways in which Jen's writing has helped her personally feel less alone.Amazon: https://amzn.to/2ZEoyYmBookshop: https://bit.ly/3FXI81gSubscribe to Zibby's weekly newsletter here. In an attempt to deal with the resulting range of emotions and physical changes in midlife, Jen Mann posted a completely honest now-viral post, “Anyone Else Falling Apart Or Is It Just Me?” The response was instantaneous and overwhelming. Women from all over the country flooded the comments section, glad to see they weren't the only ones experiencing this feeling of isolation and dissatisfaction.  Jen decided to create an online community call “Midlife Bites” and quickly had tens of thousands of followers all exchanging thoughts, ideas, and possible solutions around the theme of midlife and what it has to offer, not just how tough it could be. After establishing a safe online space to exchange ideas, Jen used the thousands of responses she got, along with many of her own experiences to inform the topics in MIDLIFE BITES. Jess and Jess have a WHOLE LOTTA things to say about the general disruption and malaise they are experiencing in their own middle lives, and Jen Mann brings wit, vulnerability and a healthy dose of humor to the conversation around how EVERYTHING changes when you reach the middle of your life- and WHY THE HELL aren't we talking about it? For women of every age, but especially those between the ages of 40-60, Midlife Bites is a must have manual on how to come through this time in life stronger, connected and ready to take on what's next.Available January 4, 2022, Pre-order Midlife Bites athttps://www.amazon.com/Midlife-Bites-Anyone-Falling-Apart/dp/0593158512/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3KD79CVZWVAN1&keywords=midlife+bites+by+jen+mann&qid=1641166048&sprefix=midlife+bit%2Caps%2C58&sr=8-1Meet Jen!Jen Mann is best known for her wildly popular blog, People I Want to Punch in the Throat. Jen Mann is the New York Times bestselling author of People I Want to Punch in the Throat, a humorous look at the things most of us are thinking but rarely have the courage to say out loud. She’s written a number of books in the PIWTPITT series, including a work version, a holidays version, and others. When she's not working on her own material, Jen is publishing the I Just Want to Pee Alone series of anthologies where she has so far featured over 140 female writers focused on finding the hilarity—and the truth—about parenthood, relationships, and the cult of female perfection.   Jen’s latest work, the sixth book in the I Just Want to Pee Alone Series, is called You Do You. Her contributors for You Do You range in age from 12 to 64 and the stories they share and the way they share them are nothing short of amazing. You Do You is a celebration of the females in all of our lives, and it’s for anyone—from middle school to middle age.   In our Midtopia interview, we take a dive into Jen’s background and what she was doing before she started writing books as a serious personal pursuit. Jen shared with me the advice she gives to any woman wanting to pursue a career in writing (Hint: It’s about a whole lot more than just being able to write). We also talk about what it was like working with a younger generation of writers in the You Do You series, and some things she learned along the way.   This is a must-watch/must-listen episode of Midtopia for the aspiring writers out there. It’s also important information for new writers making their way in the complex world of writing today, which also requires more than a little knowledge about marketing and how to build a community around whatever it is you’re passionate about and writing about.

We had so much fun recording #6 in a construction site that we decided we should do it again! A big thank you to Steve at U31 for letting us this space once again. We invited over some friends of The Show, Morgan Tenwick, Jen Mann, and of course Travis Hudson, Mr. #stout365, for some "drinking a bunch of stouts" fun in a slightly creepy location! We also break down our Top 3 got to beers, beers we can drink anytime, anywhere. We began our sampling with SD staples and Sore Eye Cup champions; I'm not sure I had ever really drank Oatmeal Stout from Benchmark, Tabula Rasa from Second Chance, and Speedway Stout from AleSmith in sequence but each remains a beacon of light in a sea of awesome stouts. The time tested quality of each of these beers and breweries really underlines the legitimacy of their Sore Eye Cup victories. Then we're totally invaded and show jacked by the What's on Draft crew! They're on to discuss all the great things you can expect to see in the Sexy Brewers calendar. You get to hear my honest, first reactions to each month's picture and hear some behind the scenes stories about the shots, it's like Pop Up Podcastio, you get all the fun without those annoying visuals. The calendar benefits Life Sharing, a charity close to Tom's heart. We squeeze in some older (aged) stouts, a few barrel aged bottles, and just for the record, we also consumed a bunch of OTL Lager and 2 crowlers of Eppig beers. This was one of our heavier drinking episodes in a while and I really enjoyed it!Grab your favorite stout, or go to beer, and push that play button! I realize that "best" is not really the best word to use when you’re talking about parenting fails, because one parenting fail isn’t better than another one, but it is fun to do “best of” countdowns. So, the takeaway I hope you get from listening to this series isn’t that mistakes are no big deal. It’s simply that we all make mistakes, and that there’s no such thing as a perfect parent.
