Donald Harold Young was successful business leader, living the American dream, but a very unhappy person. Something was missing from his life. So, he chased what he thought would make him happy: reputation, physical desires, and everything the material world has to offer. However, Don reinvented himself, his heart and his life in his 50s after he surrendered himself to God and to Love. Then, his whole being became filled with a deep sense of peace and gratitude after years of unhappiness and selfishness. I recently had the chance to interview Donald about his life and upcoming memoir, Finding God in Vegas: Reimagining the American Dream. In our conversation Donald talks about: His journey from a material life marketing pharmaceuticals focused on worldly success to a more spiritual life His decision to pursue his passion instead of money How he is able to trust in God throughout his journey How his sexuality as a gay man affected his journey and advice for other people who may be struggling with their sexuality Suggestions for other people who want to reinvent themselves and follow their passions How he believes his purpose is to creating more love; and meaningful actions he has taken to do that such as volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for the Eighth Judicial District Court in Las Vegas, Nevada. Donald was very authentic and honest about how his journey from being focused on material success to a more spiritual life has filled him with greater peace and freedom. However, he also shares that he experiences anxiety and doubt about trusting in God. One of the most profound and practical insights Donald shared with me is that it is okay and normal to trust in God even if we are still feeling doubts and anxiety. He also shares his daily practices and helpful beliefs for dealing with his anxiety and doubts.

We seek after wisdom, and we believe wisdom is the highest possible form of knowledge. Brittany Homer from the Raising Today's Kids podcast and Project Stand. “I remember when I was young, realizing the importance of giving children a good foundation, how if they are given a good foundation in their life, then there is no limit to their potential.” – Brittany Homer “Anytime you try to change the economy of God, you're doing it wrong.” – Haitian guide as remembered by Brittany Homer “In order to help children be successful, in order to help them reach their potential, parents have to do their job, and parents have to know how to do their job, and parents have to feel empowered.” – Brittany Homer “If I'm going to prevent human trafficking, I've got to address pornography exposure and help people prevent that or address that.” – Brittany Homer “We felt like, in order to keep kids safe from all of these forms of sexual exploitation that are out there, we've got to help them be safe online.” – Brittany Homer “Really the most important factor is that parent-child relationship.” – Brittany Homer Some organizations that Brittany mentioned include the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, Fight the New Drug, White Ribbon Week, Defend Young Minds, The Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation, the Utah Coalition Against Pornography, Utah PTA Digital Wellness Committee, and Safeguard Alliance. “I love how we are all in the business of trying to help children and strengthen families.” – Brittany Homer “I feel like God is at the core of everything that I do, and so I find a lot of strength in Him, and I feel like sometimes He guides me to spend some time learning, and sometimes He guides me to just slow down and focus on the people.” – Brittany Homer “Too much screen time can be related to sleep. Problems, aggression, desensitization, nightmares, fear, impulsivity, depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, low attention span. I mean, there's so, so many negative things that are associated with too much screen time.” – Brittany Homer “The more time someone uses social media, the more likely they are to be depressed. Social media increases the risk of bullying, clique forming, sexual experimentation. It leads to privacy issues, Internet addiction, sleep deprivation, anxiety, depression.” – Brittany Homer “Cyberbullying – One in four children has experienced cyberbullying, and cyberbullying victims are two times more likely to commit suicide.” – Brittany Homer “This statistic blew my mind: 27% of all video content online is pornographic.” – Brittany Homer “I'm very hopeful, because I know that children can be resilient.” – Brittany Homer “I believe that an educated parent can just be so powerful in the lives of their kids and protecting them.” – Brittany Homer “I'm just so glad that you followed up those statistics with hope and that idea that if we can teach them to use their screen time wisely, then there's nothing that they can't do. I think that's really encouraging and exciting. It puts a lot of pressure on us parents, but it's exciting. We can become educated.” – Dana Robb Healthy Technology Path “Take ‘Just a SEC' – Stop, Evaluate, Choose – whenever you're going to post or search or share something online.” – Brittany Homer “I love your approach to questions. It's not accusatory. It's not assuming that they're doing something bad or dumb, and you're allowing them to collaborate with you and to share their inner selves. And I love the section where you focus on values and helping them discover their own. I think, as parents so many times we assume that we're going to instill in them our values and what's important to us is going to be important to them, but it's so much more powerful to discover where they're at and help them decide on their values, and there's such a range of good values out there. We don't have to have all the same things.” – Dana Robb “Parents are the most important protective factor, and you are qualified to be the parent of your children. And not only are you qualified, but you're qualified today right now.” – Brittany Homer “Wisdom is achieved by uniting our internal compass or conscience with our life experiences.” – Dana Robb   Brittany has always believed that with the right tools and support there is no limit to a child's potential. She has a master's degree in Family and Human Development, is a Certified Family Life Educator, and is creator and host of the podcast, Raising Today's Kids where she shares her deep belief in the power of parents. Brittany has also served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), Sexual Assault (SANE) Advocate, and is actively involved in the Safeguard Alliance (a task force of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation). Brittany has a bucket list the length of Montana. She would love to experience every adventure from learning to yodel, to running an ultra-marathon, to seeing the northern lights from a hot spring. She loves to travel and integrate with the locals wherever she goes and has had life-changing conversations in cultures from Israel to Haiti. The experience that trumps all others though, is that of being a mother. She and her husband feel so blessed to have four children who inspire her to fight to protect all children.

Growing up in a large family in Ohio, Jennifer was always surrounded by love and support. But at 18, she made the bold decision to leave her family and move out west to chase her dreams of living by the beach and experiencing life in the big city. Arriving in Los Angeles wasn't easy; she faced financial and emotional struggles. But as they say, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Jennifer eventually found her footing as a freelance makeup artist, working on movie sets. A chance encounter at the Playboy Mansion changed her life. While working as an assistant to a makeup artist, Jennifer caught the eye of Hugh Hefner, which led her to a career in modeling. Although she never imagined herself in that world, she embraced the opportunity. In 2008, Jennifer retired from modeling to focus on her growing family. Now, she's happily married to former NFL safety Adam Archuleta and currently a commentator for CBS. They have been together for over 18 years and have three beautiful children, five dogs, and two tortoises. Over the years, Jennifer has discovered a deep passion for helping others. She has been a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for foster children and volunteered for Childhelp for the last eight years. As a survivor of childhood trauma herself, it's important for her to give back to those in need. In her free time, Jennifer enjoys participating in Spartan races, going to the shooting range, working out, attending church, cooking, and spending quality time with her family. When I was 42, I asked myself if I wanted to live the second half of my life like I lived the first half. I was an unhappy, single mother working, 60 hours a week to prove I was worth 40 hours of pay. Looking over my life at the half way point made me realize I needed to make some changes. I went on a journey of self discovery that led me to becoming an entrepreneur, then  a Certified Life, Spiritual and Relationship Coach. Now, I help others realize their full potential. Mentoring men and women through the process of permanent change, has been my life purpose. I create a safe space for my clients to examine blocks that have been holding them back from acheiving their DREAM. Looking and challenging their core beliefs helps them to BELIEVE in themselves. Holding them accountable helps them CHANGE their lives. I believe making the world a better place starts with ourselves, which is why I give service whenever I can. I was on the Board of Directors for nonprofits helping to feed seniors, I have been a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and most recently a Big Sister. For several years, I co-hosted a community-affairs radio show on KPOV, and more recently I was a featured guest on The Point, helping people navigate the pandemic using coaching strategies. My strong marketing and public relations experience comes from having worked in the field for over 20 years. And my love of entrepreunuership compelled me to start a successful business that raised over 15 million dollars for nonprofits nationwide. But it is Life Coaching that has been my first love. I currently have certifications in Life, Relationship and Spritual Coaching and continue to advance my education and learning new tools to help others. Taking risks was never easy for me, but my own journey led to personal growth that changed my life.  I went from being frightened and lonely, to  becoming strong, independent,  and deeply fulfilled as I travel the world. I live in Mexico part of the year, and I take classes to continually better myself. I am living the life I have always wanted. This is now my reality. But I didn't get there alone. I had mentors, teachers and coaches every step of the way. I wanted to change my life and I learned how to do it, and I want to share my knowledge and training with you. It is possible to live the life you always wanted.  It starts with a FREE consultation to DREAM, BELIEVE AND CHANGE your life. https://www.jacquieelliottclc.com There are worksheets on the site as well as information on retreats and workshops.

Susanne Kerns is a podcaster and humor writer living in Austin, Texas with her husband and two children. Her work has been featured in Scary Mommy, Redbook, Today Parents and several parenting anthologies, including the NYT bestselling I Just Want to Pee Alone series. She co-produced, and performed in, the "Listen to Your Mother" show in Austin, Texas. She's currently writing her first non-fiction book to help other women to deal with the identity crisis that can come with giving up your career to become a stay-at-home mom. She co-hosts the Mom & ... Podcast with Missy Stevens, which also focuses on helping moms define themselves outside of "mom." In 2017, she started the group, "Informed Parents of Austin," to advocate for LGBTQIA+ students, families and staff in her school district. Susanne uses her "privilege of safety" to be the megaphone for children in the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as for their parents. When people do not feel safe enough to speak, Susanne volunteers to speak for them. Her efforts have paid off. For example, her local school district will be teaching an inclusive, science-backed sex education program this term. Susanne works hard to use her core values to inform her life decisions. Missy Stevens is a writer, foster child advocate and podcaster. Her past life includes stints as a corporate community relations manager and non-profit communications writer. These days, Missy is an aspiring novelist, slowly working on endless revisions of her first manuscript. Her work has been featured in local and national online publications, as well as in the stage production, "Listen to Your Mother." Missy, a native Austinite, lives with her husband, two sons, two dogs and "too many plants. Just kidding. There is no such thing as too many plants." Missy admonishes listeners to not wait to do what you want to do. At-home moms can start before their children leave home to hone their skills or build new ones. According to the Adoption Network, over 135,000 children get adopted every year in the United States. However, these kids are more than statistics. These are human beings with complex and layered lives, often riddled with traumas that are, unfortunately, rarely talked about or supported even by their loving adoptive families.Trauma is often overlooked in adoption for many reasons. It can be difficult for families to discuss. Adoptive families may feel like they need to protect their child from further hurt, or they may feel guilty about the traumas their child has experienced.Additionally, many adoptive families are not aware of the signs of trauma or how to support their child through it. Culture can also play a huge role in how trauma is viewed. The effects of trauma among adopted children, though, can amplify not only in the household but also in the community. How can the black community help these families, especially the children, heal?To answer this significant question, I reached out to adoption advocate, Stacey Gatlin, who runs the organization, Yes, We Adopt. In this podcast episode, we discussed the barriers to adoption inside our communities, why adoption is traumatic for kids, and how adoptive parents can get much-needed support.Gatlin adoptive parent herself, she has a unique perspective when it comes to understanding and talking about trauma in the black community.Topics Covered:Identify the common barriers to adoption in the black communityLearn why trauma should also be discussed and managed during adoptionKnow why the origin story mattersDiscover ways that parents can acknowledge, understand, and ultimately support the child's healing from traumaGuest Bio:Stacey Gatlin is a servant leader dedicated to the development of people, processes, and organizations.  Her true passion is helping to make a difference in the lives of women and children. She is committed to long-lasting personal, professional, and community development through her career and volunteer activities.  She recently transitioned her corporate experience in talent management, process improvement, and project management into entrepreneurship and advocacy. As an adoptive mom, Stacey saw a need to rewrite the narrative around Black adoption and fostering from the negative stereotypes often portrayed in the news. She created Yes We Adopt (yesweadopt.com) to help enlighten Black individuals and couples to the need for adoptive and foster parents and provide support in their journey.  As she further engaged with adoptees and birth parents, she also wants Yes We Adopt to help elevate their voices and to enact change.  In addition to her work in Yes We Adopt, Stacey is also a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) in New Jersey for children in foster care.  In 2017, Stacey launched her own lifestyle management business, Victory Concierge (victoryconcierge.net). The business provides online business management and virtual assistance to busy professionals and small businesses. Victory Concierge is a perfect merger between her passion for helping others and her attention to detail.  Stacey's customers entrust her to handle the administrative responsibilities while they focus on growing their business and/or career. She works with diverse professionals in the private sector, including legal, medical, consulting, and beauty industries. In her previous career, Stacey enjoyed 15+ years with Johnson & Johnson spending the first half of her career in operations and supply chain with experience in planning, manufacturing supervision, and customer service.  In the second half of her career, she leveraged her network, ability to drive results, and coaching skills in talent mana

Dear Neighbors,In this week's program, I speak with Sheryn Hildebrand about the serious problem of child sex trafficking in Mendocino County. As painful as it may be to hear her words, we must listen. In this gut-wrenching interview, we will hear about how children in Mendocino county California are courted, drugged, groomed, and put out to the public as child prostitutes. They are coerced, psychologically and physically abused, extorted, and blackmailed, in order to keep them in virtual captivity.Authorities are understaffed and the public is so horrified, by the topic itself, that it does not receive the public outcry needed.Sheryn Hildebrand is the Director of the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program in Lake & Mendocino County. Sheryn has served as director for 21 years and also works with neighboring counties (Lake, Humboldt, Del Norte) facilitating Child Abuse Prevention opportunities. She sits on both Mendocino and Lake Counties' child abuse prevention councils as well as participates at the state level on the critical incidents citizen review panel (CRP). Learn more at the California CASA website.A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is a trained volunteer appointed by a judicial officer to provide advocacy for a child who is under the jurisdiction of the courts due to abuse or neglect. The CASA serves as the “eyes and ears” of the judge for children in foster care. Volunteers spend time with children, monitor needed services, and provide child-focused recommendations to the court based on the best interest of the children they serve. From March 28 - 31, the iEmpathize organization will be featuring an exhibit called The Apathy Effect at the Ukiah Conference Center (200 S. School St., Ukiah, CA). The purpose of the iEmphathize organization is to help communities ignite empathy to end childhood exploitation.

We recommend his book: 'Invisible Children: Pre-Teen Mothers, Adolescent Felons, and What We Can Do About It'. It's an uncomfortably close look at the American cycle of abuse and its cost. Mike explains, "The need for civic involvement of young future community leaders is the solution to America's 'At Risk Youth' problem. Without today's college students understanding and support, schools will continue to fail, streets to be unsafe, and jails to fill." Mike often speaks at local and national venues and has been the keynote speaker at business, community, and religious organizations. He's led a workshop at the UN in New York addressing the rights of children. Abused kids becoming lost in America's foster care system is a horror story that our country deals with today. Their real needs, pain and experience gets lost in the govermental bureaucracy and under-staffed, under-funded social services agencies. The role of a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) was first conceived in 1977 by Judge David Soukup in Seattle, who wanted to find a way for the court to obtain better information about the needs of children in foster care. A CASA stays with the child even if they are moved to other homes. They are a constant on which the child can rely. CASA volunteers advocate for a foster child or sibling group in court, school, and in the community to ensure their needs are met. Today we talk to Matt Morscheck, who has volunteered as a CASA with San Diego based Voices for Children since 2019. Matt is a professional counselor, coach, and trainer who specializes in career counseling, developing leaders and managers, and talent development consulting. East Central Indiana CASA recruits, trains and supports CASA volunteers as advocates to get to know the abused or neglected child and determine their needs and what is in the child’s best interest for their future. The CASA volunteer communicates this information about the child to the court so the child’s voice can be heard and so the child does not become “lost” in the system. East Central Indiana CASA is also a member of the National CASA Association, where last year, more than 76,000 CASA and guardian ad litem (GAL) volunteers nationwide helped more than 251,000 abused and neglected children find safe, permanent homes.

We’re talking about the effect of the foster care system on a child’s learning and education. Often times, foster care children move around from one home to another and that takes a toll on their learning in various ways. We discuss the potential implications and what social workers and foster parents can do to help. For full show transcript, visit site here.  What We Discuss in This Episode: What are the educational implications of moving a foster child from one home to another? The interruptions and emotional trauma that is created Adjusting to a new home can be an issue What do social workers need to know in order to help the child and potentially advocate for them? Just because a child is in foster care, doesn’t necessarily mean the foster parent holds educational rights to that child The importance of knowing who holds educational rights as a parent Identifying when a foster care child is having difficulty adjusting at home can help tackle potential learning difficulties at school Should social workers be involved in a child’s IEP team? What is CASA and how can that type of advocacy help a student? Tonight's special guest is Darcy M. Heyd from Honor, Michigan, the youngest of six children and a survivor of childhood rape and incest. "When my mother was still pregnant with me we were abandoned by my mentally ill father," Darcy reports. "As a 4 year old I survived rape and trauma by my oldest brother, and at age 8 I was molested by my grandfather." When she learned of the rape, her mother told Darcy, "You should never tell anyone else what happened because they will take you away and you will never see mama again." When she was told about the molestation by her grandfather, she said, "Don't worry, he doesn't mean anything by it." Darcy's brother ended up in prison for the kidnapping and raping a young girl. "My mom didn't want me around, as I was her shame. She would often leave me and force me to stay with various families from our church," she explains. In a six year period she was placed with six different families." The emotional abandonment by Darcy's mother began a life time of confusion, chaos, shame, self-doubt, and fear. The people who should have been protecting her had not. She struggled for years with being able to hold down a consistent job. Darcy used food to self-medicate and reached nearly 350 lbs. "One of our biggest enemies with the epidemic of sexual abuse is the silence of mothers, sisters and other caregivers," she says. "This is where I intend to focus most of my energy as an advocate and fighter for victims." In recovery, Darcy has a successful business (Brick House Productions), is a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children and serves as the Michigan Ambassador for NAASCA.
