Welcome to Episode 9 where we talk about Luc Besson's Valerian. Is this better than The 5th Element? What's the definition of a spank bank? Plus, listen to Mandy's Michelle Rodriguez impression.
Hosts Seamus Smith & Kraig Rasmussen run down some recent film news, including Jason Mamoa in the Crow remake, directed by Corin Hardy, Greta Gerwig's planned Sacramento Quadrilogy, Avengers. Luc Besson's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is out on DVD and Blu-Ray this week, so we're exploring the film's connections to Star Wars on this week's Force Material podcast!Much has been made of the debt that Star Wars supposedly owes to writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières' Valerian and Laureline, which ran in French comics magazine Pilote from 1967 to 2010.Christin and Mézières have both been vocal about the influence they believe their work had on George Lucas' saga, as has director Luc Besson, who brought the long-running sci-fi strip to the silver screen earlier this year.George Lucas, on the other hand, has never acknowledged Valerian as an inspiration for Star Wars. This week on the Force Material podcast, we attempt to weigh up the evidence and determine what impact Valerian really had on Star Wars! We also share our thoughts on Besson's film, and grapple with the question nobody can answer — why does Hollywood keep trying to make Dane DeHaan happen? For a visual comparison between the Valerian comics and the Star Wars films, check out Six ways Valerian (might have) influenced Star Wars.
Brian is joined by long-time-guest Ariel Rada from the Geek 101 Podcast to discuss the masterwork that is Luc Besson's "Valerian."
Nick and Chay take on Luc Besson's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Can the team make sense of the nonsensical? Can we even make it through the entire plot of the film? Why any of this?! I'm not going to lie, this one got a little out of hand but it's a fun listen.
Today I review three recent films. Iiiiiit's podcast time! Not for us, obviously. We've already recorded this one. On this week's episode, Adam has imbibed a yard's worth of pop culture, including Atomic Blonde and Luc Besson's Valerian. It turns out that Valerian tests even Adam's love for Besson's films. Speaking of Besson, I still think it's weird Lucy was about a woman who turns into a godlike intelligence while fighting Asian Triad gangsters. Anyway! We also talk about the latest from Wynonna Earp and especially Killjoys. Listen below, find us on iTunes, you do you.
Matthew Sweet presents a selection of film music inspired by the space opera genre following the release of Luc Besson's "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" with a new score by Alexandre Desplat. The programme looks at some of the earliest examples of space operas, including "Flash Gordon" and "Buck Rogers", defining the genre, and features music from the likes of "Battlestar Galactica", "Battle Beyond The Stars", "Star Trek - Beyond", "Dune", "The Last Starfighter", "Serenity", "Jupiter Ascending", "The Fifth Element" and of course, "Star Wars" which perhaps did more than any other film to establish the musical sound of space opera.
To celebrate the release of Luc Besson's Valerian we watch his classic syfy film starring Chris Tucker and nobody else.

We've got four movies to discuss this week, but to be honest, there's only one we REALLY want to talk about: It's of course Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk," one of the best films of the year. Grierson calls it one of the best moviegoing experiences of his lifetime, and all told, Leitch isn't that far behind him. Listen to them rave about Nolan's achievement. OK, fine, there were other movies too. Luc Besson's "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" is a noble failure, and "Girls Trip" is a noble success. Then, in our Reboot segment, we head back to 2002 for Michael Winterbottom's "24 Hour Party People." Timestamps: 5:15: "Dunkirk" 32:20 "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" 45:05 "Girls Trip" 56:56 "24 Hour Party People" We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@gmail.com. As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast. Opening Song: "I'm Gonna Get Lit Up (When The Lights Go On In London)," BBC Concert Orchestra, Carl Davis & Richard Suart Closing Song: "Transmission," Joy Division Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, see Mike transform into the talking dead. We cover a number of subjects and one particular segment has nothing to do with comics or music. Baseball...yes, baseball, but I think you'll like it none the less. We talk about the ever present DC television universe including The Flash and prospected future shows. A couple of independent comics are covered, as well, in the form of killer pumpkins and mysterious skinwalkers. Not to be outdone, Mike hints at signs of life when Ross is AWOL as we talk about Luc Besson's Valerian.
