Tune in as Rolo Tony (@PoorOldRoloTony and These Guys Got Juice) hops back onto the program for a review and recap of Dream Lover, the 1994 erotic thriller about a recent divorcee who jumps fast into another relationship with an alluring woman, only to find that there may be more to her than it seems at the outset. Comparing this to Gone Girl and You, James Spader being an expert at sleaziness, frustrations with how this thriller (and Tenet) portrays domestic abuse, and those goddamn carnival dream sequences stand out as some of the discussion material for this episode.Written and directed by Nicholas Kazan, Dream Lover stars James Spader, Mädchen Amick, Larry Miller, Fredric Lehne, Bess Armstrong, Kathleen York, Kate Williamson, Tom Lillard, William Shockley, Clyde Kusatsu, Alexander Folk, and Scott Coffey.Spoilers start at 35:30Dream Lover (1993), or, Probably the Single Most Misogynist Film I've Ever SeenCreate your podcast today! #madeonzencastrHere's how you can learn more about Palestine and IsraelHere's how you can keep up-to-date on this genocideHere's how you can send eSIM cards to Palestinians in order to help them stay connected onlineGood Word:• Rolo Tony: The Shape of Things• Arthur: Headlights by CJ LeedeReach out at email2centscritic@yahoo.com if you want to recommend things to watch and read, share anecdotes, or just say hello!Be sure to subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes or any of your preferred podcasting platforms!Follow Arthur on Twitter, Goodpods, StoryGraph, Letterboxd, and TikTok: @arthur_ant18Follow Arthur on Bluesky: @arthur-ant18Follow the podcast on Twitter: @two_centscriticFollow the podcast on Instagram: @twocentscriticpodFollow Arthur on GoodreadsCheck out 2 Cents Critic Linktree

EMS systems can safely deliver blood in the field, and when they do, patients who would otherwise die are surviving Whole blood in the field is no longer theoretical; it is operational, measurable and increasingly expected. In this EMS One-Stop episode, host Rob Lawrence brings together two of California's leading medical directors — Drs. Clayton Kazan and Kevin Mackey — to compare and contrast their prehospital blood programs. From concept to deployment, both systems demonstrate how data, relationships and persistence can translate innovation into lives saved. This discussion goes beyond theory. It addresses real-world barriers — regulation, blood bank skepticism, funding gaps — and pairs them with practical solutions. The result is a clear message: EMS systems can safely deliver blood in the field, and when they do, patients who would otherwise die are surviving. For agencies considering similar programs, this episode provides a roadmap grounded in experience, outcomes and operational reality. Notable quotes “When there's someone who wants to see your program, talk about your program.” — Kevin Mackey “I kind of never believed it really possible to put it on a paramedic truck until I saw what the military was able to do.” — Clayton Kazan “If the five minutes matter, why wouldn't we want to do it 5, 10, 15, 20 minutes sooner?” — Clayton Kazan “Never say ‘no,' never say ‘die.'” — Kevin Mackey “They're never tired of trying to find new ways to save people's lives.” — Clayton Kazan Episode timeline 00:00 – Opening message. “Never say ‘no,' never say ‘die'” sets the tone for program development and persistence 01:00 – Series introduction. Aleksei Nikitin: In the Spirit of Tolstoy

War & Peace Podnotes, A Study Guide

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 3, 2026 9:54

This project is approaching the final chapter of Book I, a critical juncture with Napoleon victorious and holding the greatest reputation man can bestow.  Even after Napoleon suffered a string of defeats years later, his reputation was colossal when Tolstoy wrote War &Peace. Many readers coming to this book do not realize Napoleon is something of a dark force utilized to portray how to view those who send others to die for a ruler's vain ambitions. In this regard, it is important to recall how Tolstoy was influenced the Bible book of Ecclesiastes, which comments on vainglorious ambitions as well as the meaningless of everything without an appreciation of the Transcendent. Tolstoy is reaching to you from another age, highlighting how you can recognize War's profane nature compared to what is above.  Tolstoy recognizes how calls to war are a siren's song as well as how easy it is to get young men to answer, usually via a small bounty or appeal to patriotism.Acknowledging the idiosyncratic pacifist Tolstoy became, his work still recognizes how a defensive war is more justified than the type of conflict at Austerlitz. Further, Tolstoy was exceptionally critical of his own government, which makes War & Peace so relevant in our times. In this spirit, I bring up the following story:Upon Russia's mass invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, Aleksei Nikitin, a regular citizen from Moscow, tried to make a difference and stood up to power.Aleksei recognized crossing his neighbors' border and unleashing the largest land invasion since the Second World War is the type of aggression Tolstoy condemned.   Aleksei brought Tolstoy into his public protest by writing an excerpt on a poster-board from the 1894 essay “On Patriotism.” It read:“Patriotism is the abdication of human dignity, reason and conscience and a slavish submission to those in power. Patriotism is slavery.”It was a controversial sentiment then and remains so.  This essay described Tolstoy's conception of patriotism -- in that militaristic age -- as a vulgar sentiment used by governments to justify their war machines. He argued it is opposite to what he took out of the Bible, namely Christian brotherhood. Aleksei's use of the essay speaks to what Tolstoy has Andrei grasp as Andrei views the senselessness of a red-haired Russian artilleryman squaring off against a French attacker – both Christians struggling over a mop as if it was the Holy Grail. Tolstoy was speaking to the baseness of what he witnessed, as a soldier on campaigns in Chechnya and being on the losing side of the Crimean War.Tolstoy points out that men mercilessly hacking one another have a great deal more in common with one other – than the men of supposedly higher status, who sent them to die.  Tolstoy described, in another part of the essay:"It is even impossible to imagine, how and for what, Russian and German workmen, peacefully and conjointly working on the frontiers or in the capitals, should clash. And much less easily can one imagine animosity between some Kazan peasant who supplies Germans with wheat, and a German who supplies the peasant with scythes and machines. It is the same between French, German, and Italian workmen."Aleksei Nikitin was arrested and the Moscow police statement on the proceeding was carefully worded and likely came from their Intelligence Service:“This writer's (Tolstoy's) works and articles were harshly critical of the ruling (Czarist) regime, including justifying violence against the government.   Therefore, the actions of Citizen Nikitin should be interpreted as a call to overthrow the existing authorities and also to follow the ideology of Tolstoy.”This was a revealing acknowledgement that the philosophy of Tolstoy is threat to a system throwing countless men into their War Machine. Nevertheless, the Russian government succeeded in stunting that portion of citizenry who were in line with the ideals of Tolstoy. Once the internal dissension was suppressed, the Russian leader found it prudent to create, a “Tolstoy Peace Prize.”Over his career, Tolstoy brought out how such aggression brings out an ever-lasting hatred by those affected. Some of such work involves Chechnya.  One of Tolstoy's first short stories, “The Raid,” from 1853, explored amidst the Chechen  landscape -- what motivates man to kill his fellow. Further, one of final works, “Hadji Murad,” tells the story of  brutal campaigns against Chechnya, which  involved the burning of villages, fields, and livestock. Tolstoy took to heart how raids would leave the helpless crying in despair; He recognized, how such aggression promotes a natural resistance, like many Chechens have demonstrated for generations; and like the overwhelming majority of Ukrainians have capably demonstrated in our times.

Saint of the Day

He was born in Syria in 1860, in the waning years of the Ottoman Empire. In his childhood, his family took refuge in Lebanon after their parish priest, St Joseph of Damascus (July 10) was martyred; but they later returned to Damascus. In 1879 he was tonsured a monk and entered into the service of Patriarch Hierotheos of Antioch. The Balamand Seminary had been closed since 1840, but the young monk was offered a scholarship at the Constantinople Patriarchate's seminary at Halki. Returning to Syria with a theological degree, St Raphael became assistant to Gerasimos, the new Patriarch of Antioch, traveling and preaching on his behalf. After further studies in Kiev, he transferred to the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Moscow and for a time was professer of Arabic studies at the Theological Academy in Kazan. (At that time the downtrodden Orthodox of the Middle East received considerable aid and theological training from the Tsar and from the Church in Russia).   In 1895 he was sent to the United States to shepherd the Arab Orthodox Community in New York, which was without a church or a priest. He quickly consecrated a chapel and with great energy set about the work of shepherding his flock there; but he was concerned not only for them but for the Arab Christian immigrants scattered through North America, most of whom were without a pastor and in danger of falling into heterodoxy or abandoning religious life. He traveled widely throughout the continent, visiting, counseling and serving Arab Christians, preaching, celebrating marriages and baptisms, receiving confessions and celebrating the Divine Liturgy, usually in private houses. In 1898 he published the first Orthodox prayer book in Arabic to appear in the New World. In 1899, he made a seven-month journey through forty-three American cities, seeking out the "scattered sheep" of the Church in America. His services were attended not only by Arabs but by Russians and Greeks, all of whom at that time depended on the Russian mission to North America. During this entire period, he held the official rank of Archimandrite, though his work and duties exceeded those of most bishops.   In 1901, Patriarch Meletios was elected to the see of Antioch, the first Arab to occupy the patriarchal throne for 168 years. Several proposals were made to elect Archimandrite Raphael to a see in Syria; but he refused all such offers, pointing out the Orthodox people's great and little-met needs in North America. In 1904, the Moscow Patriarchate made him Bishop of Brooklyn, the first Orthodox bishop to be consecrated on American soil. He redoubled his already impressive pastoral work, ordaining priests to the many new parishes that he had founded, and assisting Saint Tikhon (then Bishop of North America) in the care of his huge diocese. In 1905 he laid the foundation of the Monastery of St Tikhon in Pennsylvania.   The bishop saw the importance of integrating the faithful into the life of their new homeland, and was an early advocate of the use of English in American Church services. When Isabel Hapgood's Service Book — the first useful English translation of the Church's services — was published in 1906, he advocated its use in all his parishes.   In 1912, St Raphael was found to be suffering from heart disease, but continued his exhausting pastoral work for two more years. In 1915 he was finally unable to continue, and reposed after two months' illness.   When his relics were transported in 1998 from Brooklyn to Antiochian Village in Ligonier, PA, they were found to be incorrupt, and in 2000 he became the most recently glorified Saint of North America.   In North America St Raphael is commemorated on the anniversary of his repose: February 27 on the Civil/New Calendar, February 14 on the Julian Calendar. He is also commemorated with the Synaxis of Saints of North America on the Second Sunday after Pentecost. The Patriarchate of Antioch also commemorates him, but on Saturday before the Synaxis of the Archangels (November 8).

A frozen river swallows cannons in 1550; a traffic jam of armour stalls outside Kyiv in 2022. Different centuries, same lesson: wars are won by planning, logistics, and the courage to listen to people who know what they're doing. Ivan the Terrible took Kazan in 1552, learning crucial lessons of warfare and statecraft that Putin the Not So Great neglected when invading Ukraine in 2022.Spinning off my new book, Siege of Kazan 1552: Ivan the Terrible breaks the Kazan khanate (Osprey), I look at how that campaign showed the power of five disciplines: promote competence, raise the right army for the fight, plan supply first, empower specialists, and build morale on a story that endures contact with reality. And how the Ukraine was has shown the cost of neglecting them. The war will change Russia—its economy, its veterans, its ties to Europe—just as Kazan changed Muscovy. The only open question is whether leaders choose the lessons that build a state, or the myths that break one.The podcast's corporate partner and sponsor is Conducttr, which provides software for innovative and immersive crisis exercises in hybrid warfare, counter-terrorism, civil affairs and similar situations. You can also follow my blog, In Moscow's Shadows, and become one of the podcast's supporting Patrons and gain question-asking rights and access to exclusive extra materials including the (almost-) weekly Govorit Moskva news briefing right here. Support the show

Black History Month has inspired me to cover 3 (of what will be 4) race-related movies in February, but Pinky is the most overt about that charged topic. Ethel Waters has a key role as Jeanne Crain's granny in Elia Kazan's complicated movie...while Crain plays a mixed-race woman who passes for white, dealing with mean-spirited racism in the south while her boyfriend just wants her to go back up north and be white. Pinky turns into a courtroom movie after the dying Ethel Barrymore's racist rich neighbour decides to leave her house to her nurse (Crain)...and the will ends up being contested. I also spent some time talking earnestly about the evolution of race and racism...and about my own history with it. So don't let me guilt you into doing something you don't want to do. Except I'll collapse and probably DIE if you don't put your ears to the 719th ep on Have You Ever Seen. (now THAT's guilt!) Well, Actually: the line about "sometimes when you win, you actually lose" is of course not from When Harry Met Sally...it's from White Men Can't Jump. Also, Kazan was nominated 5 times for Best Director, not 6. Become a subscriber to the channel and help the podcast grow. Rate and review the show as well. And hunt me down on Letterboxd: RyanHYES. Send us a textThe map looks simple until the trees vanish. Then the wind takes over, the horizon stretches for days, and every choice you make—gear, timing, route—has to respect a landscape that doesn't bend. We sit down with Jim Gallagher and Brian Johnston, a two-person team with 16 years and 5,600 kilometres of Arctic canoe travel, to unpack how they keep remote trips calm, safe, and deeply rewarding. They walk us through the real logistics of going north: choosing between floatplanes and wheel landings, why a pack canoe that fits in a hockey bag can change your budget and route options, and how to plan circle routes from communities like Yellowknife and Baker Lake when charters fall through. We talk gear that actually helps—freestanding shelters for treeless tundra, white gas stoves when fire bans and driftwood scarcity collide, and a modest solar panel that still charges on cloudy, cold days. With 24-hour daylight, they skip headlamps and sometimes start paddling at 3 a.m. to beat the wind.On the water, humility beats bravado. Jim and Brian share how whitewater skills, lining, and smart portages open up far more rivers than running every rapid. We swap stories of caribou herds clattering across riverbanks, a distant grizzly minding its own forage, seal skulls hinting at the coast, and lake trout and grayling that turn a campsite into a feast—though never a food plan. The theme is consistency: clear routines, conservative decisions, and simple systems that avoid tent failures, canoe mishaps, and food shortages, so the focus stays on wild country and long, quiet miles. If you're dreaming of bigger trips—whether that's a classic like the Thelon, Kazan, or Coppermine, or a creative link between obscure watersheds—you'll hear practical advice on courses, clubs, mentors, and building judgment alongside skill. Come for the Arctic canoe tips and expedition planning; stay for the honest take on comfort, resilience, and why an uneventful trip can be the best kind of epic. Russia has adopted a visa-free policy for Chinese citizens visiting the country for tourism or business purposes, a reciprocal move that is expected to promote the development of tourism, trade and exchanges between the two countries and contribute to their economic growth. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an executive order on Monday allowing Chinese nationals to enter Russia visa-free and stay for up to 30 days for purposes including family visits, business trips, tourism, and participation in scientific, cultural, sociopolitical, economic or sports events, as well as transit. The order, which took effect immediately, will expire on Sept 14, 2026. The news quickly went viral in China and several domestic travel portals reported a surge in search traffic for tour products to Russia. Travel agency Qunar said that searches for flights from Hangzhou in Zhejiang province to St. Petersburg increased more than threefold within the first hour, while searches for Beijing–Moscow flights surged 44 percent during the same period. 44%。Li Yanqiu, 35, who lives in Beijing, said she and her husband have always wanted to visit Lake Baikal in Siberia as well as Moscow. In 2018, she made a short business trip to Kazan in western Russia and was impressed by the country's culture and natural landscapes. “Now is a good time to visit Russia again, this time with my family,” she said, giving a thumbs up to the reciprocal visa-free policy.“现在正是再访俄罗斯的好时机,这次我想和家人一起去。” Wei Changren, founder of btiii.com, a tourism-related financial news website, said two routes are traditionally popular among Chinese travelers to Russia: Moscow–St. Petersburg and Russia's Far East region. He said the visa-waiver policy will undoubtedly boost cross-border tourism. Putin's executive order is based on the principle of reciprocity. On Sept 15, China launched a one-year trial of a 30-day visa-free policy for Russian nationals with ordinary passports, covering business, tourism, family visits, participation in exchange events and transit. This policy also expires on Sept 14, 2026.9月15日,中国对持普通护照的俄罗斯公民实施为期一年的30天免签试行政策,适用于商务、旅游、探亲访友、参加交流活动及过境。 Inna Klochko, 53, from Vladivostok, recently spent a night at the Maple Leaf Village Hot Spring Resort Hotel in Harbin, Heilongjiang province. Since China's visa-free policy took effect, she has visited Harbin twice, enjoying the city's scenery, food and hot springs. “I felt a sense of familiarity with the European-style architecture on Harbin's Central Avenue. I also tasted guobaorou,” she said. “But the highlight was the hotel's intelligent temperature-controlled hot springs and the unique ‘double-flavor hot pot pool', which made me want to return.”“在哈尔滨中央大街漫步时,那些欧式建筑让我倍感亲切,我还品尝了地道的锅包肉。” Previously, applying for a Chinese visa required more time and effort, Klochko said. “Now I just submit an electronic declaration via a mobile app, and I can pass customs in under five minutes.” In the past two months, Harbin Trip of Garden International Tour Co, a local travel agency, has received more than 400 Russian tourists — a 30 percent year-on-year increase. 30%。“Most visitors come from Vladivostok and Khabarovsk,” said Wang Taixiang, the company's vice-general manager. “After arriving in Harbin, they often go on to Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Luoyang or Zhangjiajie.” Zhang Jinshan, a tourism researcher at Beijing Union University, said China, which shares the longest land border with Russia, has a large outbound tourism market. Mutual visa waivers will greatly stimulate tourism and strengthen people-to-people exchanges. He added that Russia's reciprocal visa-free move will not only boost tourism but also help revitalize industrial zones in Northeast China and Russia's Far East.

The global economic and geopolitical order has long been balanced by the United States. Today, however, that traditional stabilizing role is in flux. The drivers of market uncertainty, typically resulting from changes in monetary policy and the economy, are increasingly linked to US politics. Fiscal strain, tariffs, and hyper-partisanship are sources of unpredictability reverberating across markets worldwide. In this context, it was a pleasure to welcome Alex Kazan, Partner and Co-head of the Geopolitical Practice at the Brunswick Group, back to the Alpha Exchange. Our conversation explores just how we got to a point where the US is exporting risk to the rest of the world. Alex argues that this is not solely about Donald Trump but more the result of structural forces that have been building over time. The advent of social media and the technology that maximizes attention by algorithmically parsing individuals into one camp or the other and the twin shocks of the GFC and Pandemic have deepened partisanship and led to an erosion of institutional trust. On the international front, Alex points to the growing willingness of policymakers to weaponize economic tools like tariffs, sanctions, and export controls. This policy volatility, he argues, has redefined how multinational firms think about resilience, supply chains, and risk. In this new environment, economic strategy and foreign policy are fused, and companies must learn to negotiate not just with markets, but with Washington itself. Finally, we turn to the global stage, where U.S.–China relations remain a critical axis of uncertainty. Alex offers a nuanced view: while risks of escalation remain, the very ambition and unpredictability of U.S. policy may also open space for recalibration—a potential “grand bargain” that could stabilize the system.I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Alex Kazan.

The icon was found wrapped in an old piece of cloth under the stove, where it may have been hidden during the Tartar invasions. The icon was finally brought to the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, where it became renowned for the healings that the Mother of God wrought through it for the blind... The icon of Kazan is one of the most beloved icons of the Mother of God in Russia." (Great Horologion)

‘Our Lady of Kazan', a painting of the Virgin and Child, was discovered in the ashes of a fire in the Russian town of Kazan on 8th July, 1579. The icon quickly became associated with miracles after two blind men were said to have their sight restored by standing in front of it. The original was stolen in 1904, but the copies still represent one of Russia's most important pieces of religious art - credited by some with thwarting Napoleon's invasion of 1812. In this episode, Rebecca, Arion and Olly interrogate the reportage that continues to promote the ‘miracles' performed by the painting; reveal Hermann Goering's role in the fascinating 20th century history of the work; and recall a religious image of squirting milk that, once seen, cannot be unseen... durée : 01:00:35 - Toute une vie - par : Matthieu Garrigou-Lagrange - Harold Pinter, Liv Ulmann, Nicola Pagett dans "C'était hier", Los Angeles 1985 © Baker street par Matthieu Garrigou Lagrange et Ghislaine David La lecture des pièces de Pinter est une expérience sensorielle.
