John MacKenzie chats with Cr. Martin Bella, Mackay Regional Council, about comments made by a former judge, Clive Wall, who 'slammed inaction over spiralling youth crime'. The need for a boot camp style of detention was again pushed for, as Cr. Bella reiterated his call to put space between the 'predators and their prey'.
John MacKenzie chats with Cr. Marty Bella, Mackay Regional Council, about the Alice Springs youth curfews contrasted to the growing crime concerns in Mount Isa, Townsville, and Cairns. Cr. Bella also backed up comments made by Magistrate Mark Bucknall, who explained that "the courts are armed with significant powers through... the Youth Justice Act". "Enough is enough," explained Marty Bella, "good people have a right to safety... everything else comes secondary".
John MacKenzie chats with Cr. Martin Bella, Mackay Regional Council, about the recent show of support by regional Mayors in Queensland to address the increasing concern of crime and youth offending. The state government's Youth Justice Reform Select Committee is holding an inquiry into crime in Cairns, with a forum being held today (7 Feb 2024). Cr. Bella has long stated that there must be a separation of the 'predators and their prey' arguing that the scales of justice need to be recalibrated in favour of victims suffering at the hands of juvenile thugs.
John MacKenzie chats with Cr. Martin Bella, Mackay Regional Council, to contrast the crimes occurring in Townsville to Cairns and Mackay, following a spate of Police vehicles being rammed by juvenile thugs. At least 5 police cars have been rammed in the last week, and a TPI war veteran's vehicle was trashed and rammed. 75 vehicles were allegedly stolen in Townsville in the last seven days. The situation is timely, as Palaszczuk steps down as Queenslad's Premier following state-wide condemnation from victims of crime and violence who've had enough.
John MacKenzie chats with Councillor Martin Bella, Mackay Regional Council and former Rugby League Legend, following his comments about criminals being the "predators" with residents being their "prey", in light of the Sarina Fire Station allegedly having fire trucks stolen during the midst of raging bushfires.
John MacKenzie chats with Lisa from Woree about the Cairns Regional Council's investment property proposed rate increase. Lisa was responding to Councillor Olds and Moller from the previous day, in particular, the story about a collective of ratepayers who successfully sued Mackay Regional Council over the same issue. As a result, the state government changed the law so that the act allows for differing rate charges for non-principal places of residence. With over 30,000 people in Cairns with a non-PPR property, Lisa expects the petition against this proposal, which has nearly 3000 signatures, to garner strong support.
