Calls to expand the Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Court across the country. AODTC was launched in New Zealand in 2012 as a pilot to steer high-risk, high-need offenders away from prison. Offenders must plead guilty and face a likely prison term of up to three years for drug offences, committing to a tough 12- to 18-month program including regular drug testing, AA or NA meetings, and counselling. The courts are incredibly successful in the United States, resulting in some prisons in Texas closing due to lack of need. Dr Doug Marlowe, a global expert on drug-court policy, told Kerre Woodham early studies of the system showed low rates of people committing new crimes and high rates of people completing treatment, avoiding jail sentences, and avoiding probation revocations. He says that when Judges take a personal interest in the treatment the participants are receiving, their influence and authority in the community helped to bring more resources to bear for their clients. Marlowe told Woodham that treatment courts raised all ships – raising the quality of treatment, the quality of defence council representation, and the quality of probation supervision. “Treatment is the core of the model, and if you don't have good treatment, you know, your outcomes are severely limited.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Children's Minister is attributing a reduction in youth reoffending to boot camps, even though they haven't started yet. The Government says serious and persistent young offending has dropped by more than 14% since June 2023. Northland experienced the greatest decrease at 40%. Minister Karen Chhour told Mike Hosking there have been significant developments. She says they've learnt a lot from the military-style academy pilot, which has informed other programmes. Discover the powerful message in CJ Muston's sermon on 1 Corinthians 10: Put God First. Dive into two key themes - we should not put anything in our lives above or in between us and God, and we should not be the reason someone else steps further away from God. Drawing from Paul's warnings against worshiping false gods, learn why we must run away from anything that comes between us and God. Explore verses like 1 Corinthians 10:14-15, 10:23-24 on how everything is permitted but not beneficial, and how we must build others up and look out for each other instead of seeking our own advantage.Understand how living out our faith directly affects people around us and their ability to put God first. From eating everything sold in the marketplace (1 Corinthians 10:25-27) without questions for conscience's sake, to ensuring our actions don't get in the way of an unbeliever following Jesus. Featuring insights from For King and Country's "Broken Halos" quote: "Way too shy to bear our souls, so we shout opinions, but nobody listens." Delve into 1 Corinthians 10:28-31 on respecting others' conscience, limiting our freedom to show respect to others and God, and doing everything for God's glory.CJ Muston challenges: Don't offend Jews, Greeks, or God's church (1 Corinthians 10:32-33). Please everyone, look out for many so they can be saved. Reflect with prayers like: "God, is there anything in my life more important than you? Please give me clear direction on steps to put you first again." And "God, are there interactions I need to change so people are drawn closer to you and not pushed further away?"God wants to be close to you and first in your life - and in the lives of those around you. Recently, Brandon Lake, the Christian recording artist, said that having worship songs with too much theology, or “Christianese,” as he called them should be tapered down in church to avoid offending those who might not want to be there. Mike and his daughter, Rebekah, discuss this and more, including what happened to the work ethic of our youth, pouring our lives out for that which is eternal, and the lack of challenge in some churches.

I can't believe it's 2025 and people are still worried about offending Zionists. Oh gosh I'd better issue an apology, I've upset the people who are cheerleading an active genocide. Every country has its customs. And if you don't want to look like that tourist who breaks every rule, there are some simple tips you can learn before the trip. Don't ask for salt and pepper in Egypt: the cook made it that way for a reason, and wanting to spice it up means showing that the dish wasn't good enough. You're used to doing it as a kind gesture around the world but don't tip waiters, taxi drivers, or hotel workers in Japan. When in Italy, don't order a cappuccino after noon. Icelanders have gained a reputation for being laid-back, and welcoming, making their country one of the most delightful places to visit. However, like any culture, Iceland has its own unique customs and traditions that visitors might unknowingly overlook. While Icelanders are forgiving, certain faux pas can unintentionally offend them. If you're planning a trip to this stunning Nordic island, it's worth familiarizing yourself with these six potential missteps to ensure a respectful and enjoyable experience. 1. Not Taking Off Shoes Before Entering an Icelander's Home In Iceland, homes are sacred spaces of comfort and cleanliness. One of the simplest ways to show respect when visiting someone's home is to remove your shoes at the door. Icelanders prioritize cleanliness due to the often wet and muddy conditions outside, so tracking dirt indoors is a definite no-no.Neglecting to do so can come across as careless and inconsiderate. If you're invited into an Icelander's home, look for a spot near the entrance to leave your shoes and step inside as they do—with clean, socked feet. 2. Calling an Icelandic Horse a Pony Icelandic horses are small but mighty—don't let their size fool you. These resilient and unique animals are deeply ingrained in Icelandic culture, and they're anything but ponies. Referring to them as such diminishes their significance and can offend locals who take great pride in this distinctive breed. If you're admiring an Icelandic horse, feel free to compliment its beauty, strength, or unique gait known as the "tölt," but never, ever call it a pony. 3. Not Offering an Icelander Some Coffee If They Visit You Coffee is more than just a beverage in Iceland; it's a social ritual. Icelanders love coffee and rarely pass up an opportunity to enjoy a cup, especially when visiting someone's home. Failing to offer coffee to an Icelander can come across as thoughtless or unwelcoming. Whether it's a casual drop-in or a planned meeting, have some coffee ready to serve. It's not just polite—it's practically a cultural obligation. 4. Not Showering Naked Before Entering a Pool Icelanders are serious about their pools and hot springs, and equally serious about hygiene. Before entering any pool, it's mandatory to take a thorough, naked shower to ensure cleanliness. Unlike in some other countries, wearing a swimsuit in the shower is seen as unhygienic and can quickly earn disapproval from locals. It might feel awkward to some visitors, but rest assured, no one is paying attention. Embrace the custom—it's an essential part of Icelandic pool culture. 5. Voicing Your Dislike or Disdain for Licorice Licorice is a beloved treat in Iceland, and it appears in everything from candies to desserts and even ice cream. While you're entitled to your own tastes, loudly declaring your disdain for licorice might be taken as an insult to the Icelandic palate. To be fair, most Icelanders will laugh if your initial response is that you don't like it but harping on how bad it tastes to you or saying that you think Icelanders are strange for liking it, won't go over well. Instead, consider trying a piece and appreciating the locals' enthusiasm for their favorite flavor. Who knows? You might even develop a fondness for it yourself. 6. Being a Disrespectful Tourist Iceland's natural beauty is one of its greatest treasures, but it's also incredibly fragile. From walking on moss-covered landscapes to littering or disregarding safety guidelines, disrespectful behavior can cause lasting damage to the environment and irk locals. Similarly, being disruptive or inconsiderate in public spaces can tarnish your reputation as a visitor. Show your respect by following local rules, leaving no trace,
From the start of 2021 to November 2023 a total of 333 police staff - constabulary and non-sworn - were investigated for alleged criminal offending. The constabulary includes all of those from recruits right up to senior inspectors and top cops. Non sworn staff are in admin or support roles within the organisation. Of those investigated, 89 were charged. In some cases, employees faced multiple charges. They have murdered and raped people. They have stolen and lied. They’ve bought and sold drugs. They have abused children. They’ve assaulted their partners. They have been violent. They have tried to pervert the course of justice. Instead of upholding the law as their job requires - these men and women were breaking it. Here, A Moment In Crime host Anna Leask looks at memorable examples of crooked cop staff brought to justice by their workmates since the early 2010s. We begin the episode by discussing Cormac McCarthy and a specific scene in his novel Suttree that depicts a young man fornicating with watermelons. After that, we have a much longer discussion about offending publishers and your audience. We start with what big comic book creators and movie studios have been doing wrong by alienating their core audience, how that correlates with authors on a much smaller scale, and the simple fixes that can avoid many headaches. Around 40 or so minutes in we finally get to the heart of the episode by discussing a specific scene (or in this case, word choice) that might derail one of Caleb's future submissions. We talk about when you should be brave and stick to your guns, and when it's important to know when to concede and make the proper changes to a work to get it published. All of us have been in both of those seats; we have offended others, sometimes intentionally, sometimes not, and we have certainly been offended. But neither place is a good place to be; a mature Christian who desires to grow up in Christ doesn't want to spend any time in either place—either as the offended or the offender. This episode and next, I'm going to describe what happens to us when we occupy either of these seats—the seat of the offender or the offended. And then we prepared a special handout to help you stay out of both! You'll find it on our website at christianworkingwoman.org. Let's look at the seat of the offender. Offending others can either be intentional or unintentional. We must recognize both—those times when we really want to hurt someone, and those times when we have hurt someone without even realizing it. First, what would cause us to intentionally try to hurt someone? The first thing that comes to my mind is that we strike back at someone who has hurt us. We've been hurt, so we hurt back. This comes in big ways and small ways. For example, someone may have said one sentence to you today that hurt your feelings, and before you know it, you reacted with a stinger of your own. Or someone may have passed you by without saying hello or treated you in what seemed like a rude way, and so the next chance you get, you respond to them in a similar fashion. Those are small offenses that generate other small offenses. And whether the first offense was intentional, we respond in an intentionally offensive way because we assume it was intentional! Does this not ring a bell with you? You've seen it happen at work, at home, at church, in families, with friends and strangers, and no doubt you've sat in the seat of the offended in response to small offenses. The thing is, these small offenses can easily escalate to a long-term, hurtful cycle of offenses each person inflicts on the other. There are many marriages, as well as other close relationships, that have been in a cycle like this for years, where one small offense generates another in return, and that has become the norm for that relationship—each person offends because she or he is offended, and on it goes. What is needed is for one person in that relationship to be willing to break the cycle. This is why Jesus said, “If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles” (Matthew 5:39 – 41). Jesus is not advocating we become floor mats for people to run over, but he is saying if you will be willing to break the cycle, to be the one who refuses to return an offense for an offense, you can stop this hurtful cycle and you can find healing in the relationship. But someone has to decide to get out of the seat of the offender and not return evil for evil. Some married friends of mine say they have learned to give each other the benefit of the doubt. In other words, if one of them is offended by the other, before they assume that the other meant to offend them, they give them the benefit of the doubt by assuming they did not mean to offend, since they both have promised not to intentionally offend each other. I like that. That will break the cycle of offense before it gets started. If you are in the offender's seat, I want to encourage you—to urge you—to decide to get out of it right now, today. It's really a miserable place to be. But I think it is often true when we do offend someone, it is unintentional. We don't stop to realize how words, attitudes, body language, and facial expressions—and all kinds of little things—can become offensive. We truly underestimate how easily we can cause hurt. Aren't you usually shocked when you find out someone is offended with something you said or did? I was shocked some time ago when a person I counted as a good friend began to strike out ...
Welcome to another episode of Refuse Ordinary: Season 3! This season we're joining in on one of the many classes taught to level 1-4 of the full time School of Transformation. In this episode, we will be sitting in on a class called "Getting Over Jesus Offending Your Culture", taught by Maria McWhorter. This class discusses areas in the gospels where what Jesus said or did offended the people around Him, and how there was a real life-changing purpose to what He said and did. The Pharisees often got offended by Jesus as He held them to a high standard in their position as spiritual leaders at the chance that they would correct their course. What is your response when Jesus offends your culture? Are you able to course correct to align with His will, or do you try to invalidate what He is saying? If you have any questions about this topic, or about the School of Transformation, don't hesitate to email us at info@transformationschool.org

Healthwatch England did research with women who were reluctant to accept NHS invitations for screening and found that 73% would do an at-home test instead. A trial done by King's College London earlier this year found that if self-sample kits were available on the NHS, 400,000 more women would be screened per year. Chief Executive of Healthwatch England Louise Ansari and Dr Anita Lim, lead investigator of the King's College London trial, join Clare to tell us more.Sarah Pearse is the best-selling author of the Detective Elin Warner trilogy. Laura, Bill, Kristin and Kathryn break down three rapes committed by Walter Jackson. On June 5 1996, just days after Lollie Winans and Julie Williams were sexually assaulted and murdered, Jackson abducted and raped another woman at knifepoint. He was arrested by a proactive detective. However, a prosecutor declined to pursue charges. Days later he raped again. This is unfathomable as are the extraordinary circumstances of Darrel Rice's death, the FBI's prime suspect for Lollie and Julie's murders for many years. Join the conversation and the Crime Analyst Squad for extra videos relating to these updates and attend the August 14 Ringleaders Happy Hour where Kathryn will join Laura to dive deeper into the case www.patreon.con/CrimeAnalyst If you have any information concerning this case, please contact the FBI's Toll-Free tipline at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324). Israeli forces are on the move and official Washington is warning them not to cross their "red line." (insert eye roll) The warmest winter ever!?!?! Facts are stubborn things and Stigall shares some.
