A diminuição da taxa de vacinação do sarampo, uma doença comum na infância, gerou um aumento no número de infecções nos últimos anos em vários países desenvolvidos. Este é o caso dos Estados Unidos, onde o presidente Donald Trump e o secretário da Saúde, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., não escondem seu ceticismo em relação às vacinas. O sarampo já causou três mortes nos EUA em 2025, uma situação inédita em mais de 30 anos.  Taíssa Stivanin, da RFI em Paris Recentemente, o novo comitê Consultivo sobre Práticas de Vacinação (ACIP) dos EUA decidiu deixar de recomendar a vacina contra o sarampo para crianças menores de quatro anos. Uma pesquisa feita com mais de 2500 pais e divulgada em setembro pelo jornal Washington Post e pela ONG KFF, uma organização independente, mostrou que uma em cada seis pessoas evita ou adia as vacinações infantis recomendadas nos Estados Unidos.  A desconfiança em relação às vacinas, incluindo a do sarampo, cresceu nos Estados Unidos desde a pandemia de Covid-19 em 2020, e atinge também a França. Em 2025, já foram registradas duas mortes e mais de 820 casos em várias regiões do país, segundo a Santé Publique France, agência de saúde pública francesa.   As hospitalizações e casos graves de sarampo atingiram principalmente bebês e crianças pequenas, mas também jovens adultos – a maioria não estava vacinada. A infecção provoca febre, problemas respiratórios e erupções cutâneas. Ondas epidêmicas Como explicar o retorno de uma doença que pode ser evitada, ainda mais em países desenvolvidos?   Segundo o infectologista francês Olivier Épaulard, que atua no hospital universitário de Grenoble, no sudeste da França, as ondas epidêmicas de sarampo já vêm ocorrendo na Europa há alguns anos. O especialista lembra que, em 2010, por falta de vacinação, houve uma explosão no número de contaminações e dezenas de milhares de casos foram registrados na França. A vacinação contra o sarampo teria evitado 25 milhões de mortes durante esse pico epidêmico. E morrer da doença, “infelizmente não é raro”, acrescenta o infectologista. Na França, sem o imunizante, a estimativa é que a doença causaria a morte de 330 pessoas. “É uma patologia que tem formas graves, como as pulmonares e as que atingem o cérebro. A vacina é, desta forma, essencial para preveni-las”, completa Olivier Epaulard.  “O sarampo é muito contagioso e uma pessoa pode contaminar outras 18. Então, basta uma de cada 18 pessoas não estar vacinada para que o vírus continue a se propagar. Quando aconteceu essa onda de contaminações, percebemos que pelo menos 10% da população, talvez mais, não estava protegida contra a doença”, diz.  Diante da alta do número de casos, as autoridades sanitárias francesas tornaram a vacina do sarampo e de outras dez doenças obrigatórias para todos os recém-nascidos, em 2018. Mas, como essa obrigação é recente e parte da população não está imunizada, o vírus circula com mais facilidade em diferentes faixas etárias.  “Para interromper a circulação do vírus, é essencial vacinar todas as crianças nos primeiros anos de vida. E isso é o que começamos a fazer, em vários países, não apenas na França. Quando as crianças de hoje chegarem à idade adulta, o risco de propagação do sarampo vai diminuir", explica. "Mas isso não acontecerá imediatamente, porque as crianças que já foram submetidas à vacinação obrigatória hoje estão com sete ou oito anos. Então, o vírus provavelmente ainda vai continuar circulando em diferentes países europeus por bastante tempo.”  Estudo fake influenciou populações de alguns países O infectologista francês lamenta as falsas ideias disseminadas ao longo do tempo sobre as vacinas em geral, que atualmente são reforçadas pela retórica antivax de Trump. “A vacina do sarampo funciona muito bem e tem uma proteção de 95% após duas doses. Formas graves do sarampo não são raras e a doença foi uma causa importante de mortalidade infantil antes do início da imunização”, explica.  O risco de efeitos colaterais graves após tomar a vacina é muito baixo, lembra Olivier Épaulard, mas algumas fake news geraram desconfiança na população e ainda atrapalham a implementação de políticas vacinais eficazes. Um falso estudo assinado pelo pesquisador britânico Andrew Wakefield, em 1998, que relacionava a vacina contra o sarampo ao autismo contribuiu para esse cenário, explica.  Apesar dos resultados dessa pesquisa terem sido desmentidos por vários cientistas, ela marcou o imaginário de parte da população francesa e dos países anglo-saxões, que se tornaram reticentes em relação aos efeitos colaterais do imunizante e preferiram correr os riscos inerentes à doença, que podem ser graves. “O sarampo é perigoso para todo mundo. Para as crianças, para os adultos que não foram contaminados quando eram crianças, e para os imunossuprimidos, pessoas com a imunidade baixa e cujo sistema de defesa do organismo não funciona tão bem.”  O infectologista francês lembra que apesar de ser segura, a vacina não é recomendada para pacientes com câncer, que têm doenças crônicas ou que utilizam remédios que diminuem a imunidade e não podem ser vacinados. O imunizante utiliza um vírus vivo atenuado que pode desencadear uma resposta bem mais agressiva do que a que normalmente ocorre em indivíduos saudáveis - o que acaba sendo um motivo a mais para o resto da população se vacinar.   “No caso de muitas vacinas, a gente se imuniza por dois motivos: para evitar uma infecção e pelos outros, os mais frágeis, que não podem ser vacinados. Se não nos contaminamos, não vamos contaminar ninguém em volta também.”

Few places on earth are immune to the explosion of anti-vaccination conspiracy theories and health disinformation fuelled by the COVID pandemic. But in countries like Brazil, where the disinformation flowed from the very top of government, the problem is even more acute and some people are exploiting the fear of others to make money. In this episode we speak to Ergon Cugler at the Brazilian Institute of Information on Science and Technology about his new research into how peddlers of disinformation on social media also sell fake cures and vaccine detoxes. And we ask disinformation researcher Igor Sacramento at Brazil's Oswaldo Cruz Foundation why some people are looking for solutions to their health problems in these dangerous chemicals and unproven protocols. West Texans, Mennonites at center of measles outbreak choose medical freedom over vaccine mandates AP News, By Devi Shastri, on March 4, 2025 https://apnews.com/article/measles-outbreak-texas-rfk-vaccines-8cf4641b04731c713edb524ca943490c The discussion opens with the old saying, "God helps those who help themselves," but the Mennonite community in rural Texas appears to have missed that memo. Under RFK Jr.'s leadership in the Department of Health, the United States is seeing a rise in measles and other supposedly eradicated diseases. This resurgence is largely due to a rejection of medical science based on faith, a lack of trust in institutions, and inadequate public health education in isolated communities. The consequences of anti-vaccine ideology are dire, particularly in areas with limited health outreach. Faith-based decision-making is leading to preventable deaths, all because of a refusal to vaccinate. The conversation shifts to the tension between parental rights and public health. Many argue that parents should have the right to raise their children as they see fit, but when parental decisions cause harm to others, there's a problem. The issue arises in part from many adults ceasing to learn after leaving school, making them susceptible to misinformation. People focus on the small risks of vaccines without comparing them to the far greater risks of preventable diseases. It's like claiming water is deadly because it appears in autopsy results—misinterpreting basic facts without context leads to unnecessary fear and poor decisions. The hosts discuss RFK Jr.'s credibility—or lack thereof—regarding vaccines. Despite his skepticism, Kennedy has no medical background. His experience is in environmental law, not medicine or immunology, and his history includes youthful delinquency, drug use, and a complete lack of medical education.
