In this powerful episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty sits down with elite behavioral coach and ex-Navy weapons tech Clay Moffat, author of The Trust Trap. Together, they dismantle the myth of confidence and reveal why commitment—not confidence—is the true foundation for trust, transformation, and self-leadership. If you've ever found yourself stuck in burnout, people-pleasing, or performance mode, this conversation will cut through the noise and call you back to your own authority. About the Guest:Clay Moffat is a high-performance coach, former Navy weapons technician, and the unapologetically direct author of The Trust Trap. He helps elite performers, leaders, and founders navigate betrayal, self-sabotage, and the illusion of confidence by teaching how to rebuild internal trust and commit to uncomfortable growth. Known for his no-fluff coaching and psychological insights, Clay's mission is to wake people up to their own patterns and reclaim their power. Key Takeaways: Confidence is emotional and unreliable—commitment is structural and sustainable. Most people wait to “feel ready,” but action creates confidence—not the other way around. The nervous system defaults to familiarity—even if it's destructive—due to evolutionary wiring. Outsourcing sanity looks like over-validation, avoidance, and attachment to external systems or roles. Leaders burning out often hide behind performance, micromanagement, and a fear of slowing down. Rebuilding trust in yourself starts by showing up consistently, not waiting for a perfect moment. On June 20, 2025, a Colorado grand jury indicted Barry Morphew for the first-degree murder of his wife, Suzanne Morphew, who disappeared on Mother's Day 2020. Her remains were discovered in September 2023 in a shallow grave near Moffat, Colorado, approximately 40 miles from their home. An autopsy revealed the presence of a powerful animal tranquilizer cocktail known as BAM (butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine) in Suzanne's system. Investigators determined that Barry Morphew was the only private citizen in the area with access to BAM, a drug he had used in his previous deer farming activities in Indiana. Additionally, tranquilizer equipment was found in the couple's home, and records showed no other individuals or businesses in the region had obtained BAM prescriptions between 2017 and 2020.On June 20, 2025, a Colorado grand jury indicted Barry Morphew for the first-degree murder of his wife, Suzanne Morphew, who disappeared on Mother's Day 2020. This is an episode of massive importance. My deepest thanks to my guest, Becky Nulle, who endured horrific experiences of rape and sexual assault from multiple perpetrators, one of which was the Deputy Superintendent of Chicago Schools, James Moffat, in the late 70's and early 80's. Becky was one of 5 victims that suffered rape and sexual assault from Moffat who was finally charged and prosecuted in the mid-80's. But Becky's story starts with parents who, as she puts it, were neglectful. Becky was victimized by bullies at school, vulnerable, and easy prey to “Darrel” who promised her protection but became her first sexual abuser. He was also the person who trafficked Becky to Moffat. And then, as a result of Becky searching for safety and connection, she fell victim to several other adults who took advantage of Becky's vulnerability and exposure on the streets of Chicago. This story is tragic…and yet triumphant. Because Becky sought out help and healing. And found it through her therapist, Jan Spangler, who introduced Becky to brainspotting, a very effective trauma therapy method, according to Becky. She says that brainspotting saved her life, helping her recognize and deal with her hidden traumas, saved her marriage, and provided her with the ability to pursue her bachelor's degree, as well as the pathway of writing a book. The book is Anger, Alcohol, and Healing through Brainspotting, now available for pre-release ordering. ( Becky also provided me with a brief bio that I want to include: Becky Nulle is a soon to be published author and a volunteer who helps the Hmong community in Northern Wisconsin. She is a Sexual Assault/Rape Survivor of James Moffat, a powerful man who was second in charge of the Chicago Public School System at one time. Becky is married, has a Doberman and eight ducks. She is currently working on her Bachelors Degree in Communications. This is an episode that you'll not want to miss. And I encourage you to copy the link to this episode and share it with family, friends, and acquaintances. The impact will help bring justice to victims and survivors of rape and sexual assault, and help educate those who listen in. And, it may just save someone's life. This episode is filled with substance, reflection, and a deep commitment to the healing process. It's a powerful reminder that survivor stories don't stop when the episode is over—and that advocacy can take many forms, including quiet reflection. This one is for every voice that hasn't been heard yet—and every listener who's ready to believe, support, and speak up. There is an interesting debate taking place in urbanist circles. Is more density good for families because it helps reduce housing costs, or bad for families because it creates a lifestyle and environment that is not conducive to large families?Indeed, we might consider changing our policies and regulations based on what we think is the answer to this question. But do we have a reasonable answer?Daniel Hess runs the More Births Substack and is on Twitter @MoreBirths. Daniel has taken up the case against density because of its potential fertility effects and is my guest for this FET podcast video episode. Here is one of his articles on the topic. But Daniel is not alone in his concerns. The negative correlations between urban density and fertility are clear to many. In this episode, we discuss global and national fertility trends, and I push Daniel to justify why we should be concerned about these trends—after all, low-fertility places are the better places to live, have more opportunities for women, and many nations historically encouraged lower fertility to generate economic growth. In Hong Kong, the saying was “Two is enough”. In South Korea, it was “Stop at two, regardless of sex”. In Bangladesh, it was “One child is ideal, two children are enough”. Were they all wrong? I press Daniel to make the case for why low fertility is so bad, given that low fertility countries are generally the most desirable ones to live in. Here are three previous FET articles on the general topic, which show that I am not so concerned about declining fertility. A main issue Daniel identifies when it comes to the effect of housing density on fertility is the step-change in appropriateness of housing for families when increasing density from detached homes to apartments, even if the internal space in each dwelling is similar. Because of this, suburbia could be the secret sauce for high fertility. This makes intuitive sense to me.My own home is about 100 sqm internally, which is not too different from many nearby apartments. But it is on a 300 sqm lot and is therefore much more family-friendly than the 100 sqm apartments available in buildings just down the road. Maybe intermediate densities, like the small homes and townhouses that are more popular in new subdivisions these days, can still be as conducive to family formation as homes on large lots while economising on space and infrastructure. Unfortunately, this density is the most difficult to promote in existing areas where incremental change to much higher density and towers is usually the most economical for the property owner. We didn't have a chance to dig into the popular idea in urbanist circles that the market will accommodate all needs at all locations, but regulations prevent large apartments that can accommodate families from being built. If we could deregulate to unleash the large-format family apartment, then this fertility and density issue might be resolved. For example, here's one such statementThe fastest growing category of Toronto homes have zero bedrooms: Bachelor units grew by 28 per cent, jumping from 22,355 to 28,765."Basically, the only housing getting created in Toronto tends to be high-rise: 30, 40, 50 storeys," Mr. Moffat said. It's hard to put in units with three-plus bedrooms in those types of buildings.A mix of high land costs, restrictive zoning, using investors as preconstruction funders and high development charges pushes builders away from creating family-style units, according to Mr. Moffatt.I think such claims are 180 degrees wrong on the effect of regulations. Generally, if town planning rules limit housing types, they do so by preventing apartments so that detached homes are built instead, or requiring apartments that are built to be above a minimum size (or, in the language of The Great Housing Hijack, they restrain uses below the density equilibrium). But even having more three-bedroom and larger apartments would miss the step-change benefit of detached housing for families.Daniel comes down on the side of zoning regulations that promote detached homes where they would otherwise not be the market outcome. A key economic pattern that comes up in our conversation is that although young people have many detached housing options in smaller towns, they still commonly move to large cities and pay a premium to live in smaller apartments. For example, in Japan, small towns are giving away houses for free to try and attract families. In Australia, as in most places, housing is large and cheap in regional towns, yet the young people who grow up in those towns usually leave for higher-density places. Should we take this as evidence that low fertility and higher density lifestyles are a choice being actively made? If so, why is it bad? Finally, what of fertility policy?Should we pay a $5,000 per-child baby bonus, like Australia has done, and now Donald Trump is proposing? Or are social and cultural factors more important? After all, a lot of the decline in fertility was promoted through intentional moral suasion and cultural shifts, so perhaps this is the way it will reverse. I hope you enjoy the episode. The plane has long been located in the garden of retired local GP Dr Hamish MacLeod, and has raised money for several military charities. Now, it is being given new significance, as part of a memorial for Air Chief Marshall Hugh Dowding, who was instrumental in coordinating defensive measures during the Battle of Britain. Mark met with Hamish at his home in Moffat to hear more about Dowding, and the plane itself. Ospreys are back across Scotland, and people across the world are following along on live cameras hosted at sites such as RSPB Loch Garten. Mark and Rachel hear from the Visitor Experience Manager Clark Evans about what an exciting – and sometimes drama-filled - time of year it is on the reserve. The glasshouse and walled garden in the centre of Banff was once home to fruit trees and grapes, grown for the imposing Duff House. Now, it has been transformed into The Vinery - a local community employment hub, teaching classes on all manner of topics, including gardening. Mark met with the gardener, Michelle Walker, to hear more about the opportunities The Vinery is provides to the local community.
In a rare intersection of time and space, Ben and David sit down on the same couch in the same living room at the same time to not only watch "Lux", a new episode of Doctor Who, but also to record a podcast on the very same story together. Wow! We talk about animation, RTD's storytelling and handling of 1952 America, Belinda's yellow dress, and breaking the fourth wall and who Davies depicted to represent fandom (replete with good-natured Moffat ribbing). Opening music is from "Make 'em Laugh" by Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed from the 1952 MGM musical Singin' in the Rain and performed by Donald O'Connor. Closing music is "The Girl In The Yellow Dress" by David Gilmour and Polly Sampson off of the 2015 album, Rattle That Lock. We recorded this podcast on 23 April 2025.

Tread Perilously concludes its month of celebrating the new series Doctor Who with "Listen." As Clara goes on a somewhat uncomfortable date, The Doctor realizes he is talking to himself and supposes there might be a more sinister reason for it. Soon, he picks up Clara for a trip to the past, the future, and an impossible era to learn the truth behind the perfect hider and the monster under your bed. All the while, Clara's date, Danny Pink, seems to be at the center of the investigation. But is that to do with Clara? And who is the boy Clara finds in a barn somewhere far from England? Justin and Erik discuss Steven Moffat as a writer and his seeming resistance to platonic friendships. Actor Samuel Anderson gets praise for his performance in this episode ... but not as Danny Pink. "Listen" is unavoidably compared to "Blink," which leads to some surprising analysis of both. Does modern Doctor Who work best when Moffat and Russell T. Davies are involved at the same time? Erik once again suggests Matt Smith left earlier than originally planned. Justin praises a key sequence in the episode. Peter Capaldi's performance as The Doctor is reviewed anew and Justin identifies the only true romantic Doctor/companion pairing of the Classic series.
'The World Cricketers' Association's CEO Tom Moffat joins Stump Mic to discuss the global player body's wide-ranging report on the state of the game and how it can be repaired. In this episode, Dr. Asher Larmie speaks with fellow weight inclusive GP Dr. Molly Moffat about creating safe feeding environments for neurodivergent children that goes beyond conventional nutrition rules. Like it or not, it's impossible to talk about the Steven Moffat years without discussing the single most ubiquitous other writer of the era, Moffat's longtime collaborator and co-creator of Sherlock, Mark Gatiss. In the first of many episodes about Gatiss' Who output, Kyle and Erik discuss "Victory of the Daleks" and "Night Terrors," one of which might even be better than you think.
Welcome to The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast, where your co-hosts Stuart ‘The Wildman' Mabbutt and William Mankelow discuss questions sent in by listeners. In today's episode both questions come from the country of Scotland, with Teasag in Moffat posing the following - “How do we know what any word means?”Stuart begins the discussion around Teasag's question by challenging categorical thinking, emphasizing the contextual nature of understanding. William expands on this theme, focusing on language development. He argues; that language is fundamentally conceptual, with words evolving dynamically; over time.Stuart goes on to delve into the process of inquiry, with Stuart emphasizing the importance of repeated questioning and verification. This approach suggests a methodical and critical thinking process, where initial assumptions are constantly challenged and re-examined.The second listener question from Scotland was sent in by Brice in Crieff, Scotland - “Have you ever been discriminated against?”Stuart offers a profound personal account of experiencing discrimination within a professional networking context. During an encounter with the owner of a networking group in Oxfordshire, he was confronted about his bandages, with the suggestion that his appearance and behaviour was making others feel obligated to help him. This pivotal moment crystallized an important realization for Stuart: the critical importance of surrounding yourself with the right people.Off the back of this story, both Stuart and William offer up actions for you to ponder on.With regards to discrimination, Stuart offers this advice, that it's what you do with the discrimination, how you confront it, how you break it down. You're never gonna stop it, but you shouldn't just let it go unchallenged either. Also he suggests trying to see where the line between your own discriminations and assumptions are. Because an assumption can quickly evolve into discrimination if you don't back away from it.William's action is that when you look at somebody who is just different to you. Maybe they wear different clothes to you. Maybe they just look different to you in whatever way that is. Maybe they have a different religion to you. He encourages you to try to see through that discrimination and to see that person standing in front of you. What do you make of this discussion? Do you have a question that you'd like us to discuss? Del Sol's relationship with Susan Moffat began as a chance encounter at a spontaneous street performance during the pandemic. In this bonus episode, hear how that meeting blossomed into impactful collaborations at the Albany Bulb and Angel Island, and an entire curriculum of programming at UC Berkeley, A Year on Angel Island. Susan highlights the broader educational and emotional impacts of these collaborations, including initiatives to connect students with their heritage and history through immersive art experiences (in which Charlton's daughter participated!). Susan says the students learned that “ they can create knowledge and they can create art. And that the art can be both a way of asking questions and also of sharing the knowledge that they've gained with other people.” Enriched by Susan's multifaceted work in creating inclusive and sustainable urban spaces, this conversation explores how art not only reflects but transforms our understanding of history, place, and human connections. The latest leg of our flight through entirety comes to a gentle landing this week, but before we all head off to collect our luggage, all seven of us take the opportunity to say goodbye to Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat in one last retrospective. Notes and links Thank you to those of you who sent us questions: Kate Orman, Doctor What and General Witchfinders. In our discussion of Sleep No More, Brendan reaches for the name of Bethany Black's love interest in the episode, but goes slightly astray. The name he's after is Chopra, played by the astoundingly beautiful Neet Mohan. In Episode 2 of Flight Through Entirety, Richard famously compares Hartnell's performance style to Marlene Dietrich's. This week, he bookends that beautifully with a comparison of Peter Capaldi's style to Maggie Smith's, particularly her Oscar-winning performance in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Richard alludes to this story from 2015, in which a team consisting of Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss came third in a Doctor Who pub trivia competition at a Doctor Who convention in Sydney. Our website is at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll abandon you for a few years, leaving you with only a couple of Flight Through Entirety-style Doctor Who podcasts to keep you entertained in the meantime. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. Now that Flight Through Entirety is taking a break, you should all go and subscribe to 500 Year Diary, our latest new Doctor Who podcast, in which we go back through the history of the show and examine new themes and ideas. Its first season came out early in 2024, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season, The Second Coming, early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire recently released our hot take on Ncuti Gatwa's second Christmas Special (and Steven Moffat's ninth), Joy to the World. And we'll be back again in 2025 to talk about Season 2. Last week, The Three-Handed Game released their first Christmas Special, discussing the 1966 Avengers episode Too Many Christmas Trees, in which Steed's weird Christmas nightmares start to become reality. The boys will be back in 2025 for the third episode in their triptych The Pop Explosion. Maximum Power is back at last with its long-awaited coverage of the 1981 season of Blakes 7. Last weekend we released our discussion on the season's controversial second episode — Power. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we watched a notoriously silly early episode of Deep Space Nine, the widely reviled but never forgotten Move Along Home. Thank you very much for listening: we'll see you again in a few years. And on all of our other podcasts, of course.
The holidays are here again, and that means we were treated to another Christmas Special! Join Erika, Kat, Lynne, and Tansy as we discuss the Moffat-penned Christmas special "Joy to the World!"
