Building HVAC Science - Building Performance, Science, Health & Comfort
Quotes from the episode: "The tighter your envelope, the more attention you have to pay to ventilation and indoor air quality." "The acoustics of the ordinary rarely gets attention." "There's so much good work being done, so much data being collected, and oftentimes it doesn't leave the hard drive." "Noise annoyance may be one of the things people are most passionate about." In this episode of the Building HVAC Science Podcast, Bill Spohn welcomes Kieren McCord, a research scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, for a conversation about indoor environmental quality, acoustic comfort, and the often-overlooked benefits of building performance upgrades. Kieren shares her path from music and acoustics to building science, explaining how sound, comfort, air quality, thermal resilience, and human perception intersect in homes. The conversation explores how energy upgrades such as better windows, tighter envelopes, and improved insulation can create benefits beyond lower utility bills. Kieren explains how acoustic performance is measured, why low-frequency sound is difficult to block, how decibel weightings like dBA and dBZ work, and why human response to noise can be highly personal. She also discusses the promise and limitations of smartphone-based sound measurements, including the potential for making acoustic data collection more accessible to HERS© raters and home performance professionals. Kieren also shares details from recent field research on a Chicago window retrofit, in which triple-pane acoustic windows and careful installation resulted in a 35% reduction in whole-home air leakage. While the noise data is still being processed, the study aims to link measurable building improvements to homeowners' perceptions of comfort, quiet, smell, temperature, and overall livability. Her closing message is a call for more shared field data, more collaboration, and a stronger connection between academic research and the practical work being done every day by contractors, raters, and building performance professionals. Talent gets you through the door. It does not keep you in the room, and it has almost nothing to do with what you become.Kieren Jack is proof. The last pick in the AFL rookie draft, too small and too slow on paper, he outworked every reason he should not have made it. Kieren played 256 games for the Sydney Swans, co-captained the club, won the 2012 premiership and earned a place in its Hall of Fame. Then he did the harder thing. He walked away at the top and started again, building a whole new career in business where his name meant nothing. What carries across is the useful part. How do you keep performing when you are running on empty? What actually holds a team together when pressure hits? Why do the people who get knocked down and underestimated often end up the most dangerous?Recorded live, in a room that was never meant to be a podcast. No script, no second takes. In this episode, we welcome back Kieren James-Lubin to explore the evolution of blockchain infrastructure from the earliest days of Ethereum to the emerging world of "HardFi", programmable finance backed by real-world assets. The conversation also includes a special reveal from the team building the financial infrastructure backed by hard assets like gold and silver, offering listeners an early look at the launch of tokenized commodities and an on-chain collateral market. Long before institutional digital asset adoption, the team behind Strato was building Ethereum infrastructure for enterprises, governments, and global industrial organizations, helping launch one of the first Blockchain-as-a-Service offerings with Microsoft Azure and co-founding the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance. For over a decade, they have operated blockchain systems in production environments where reliability, compliance, auditability, and settlement infrastructure mattered. Remember to Stay Current! In this episode, Bruce explores his extended conversation with philosopher and inductivist Kieren, focusing on Kieren's claim that Popper's Critical Rationalism ultimately depends on induction.Bruce then makes a striking counter-claim: that Kieren's entire argument amounts to stripping all substantive content from his “theory” of induction and turning it into an unfalsifiable concept—essentially a word game, a kind of argument-by-tautology designed to immunize the theory from criticism. Or put another way, Kieren is turning his theory into a concept because concepts are unfalsifiable. This leads Bruce into a deeper examination of what induction actually is—and what it isn't. Why is “induction” such a confusing, multidimensional idea? What is the real point of contention between critical rationalists and inductivists? Did Popper truly lack a notion of “support,” as Kieren argues? And what did Popper actually say about justification—did he really reject every form of it?And to make things even more provocative: do CritRats rely on similar linguistic maneuvers to shield their own favored theories from criticism?Support us on Patreon

Well that was a few days in the unhinged world of F1, we started off with an action packed British Grand Prix, which gave Lando Norris his first home win and Nico Hülkenberg his first podium in 239 starts, after some very mixed up weather conditions. And just when we thought the dust was settling in time for F1 to have the break before the official Summer break, RedBull go and pull something kind of unexpected out of the bag by announcing that their team principle and divisive character Christian Horner is no lonfer their team principle (or CEO for that matter)This week on the podcast we unpick the events of the last few days and revel in the fact that we decided to record a couple of days late this week so didn't miss the big midweek story! There's a bit of a review of the British GP as I'm fairly sure that everyone's heard about it all by now, but fresh off the newswire there's our deep dive into the trainwreck that is (and has been for the last year) the RedBull situation. It's not a case of "we come to bury Horner, not to priase him" but more of our honest thoughts on him as a team principle and his image as a person (not many punches were pulled in the making of this bit).On the Sauber side of the garage, we end up doing an impromptu Is That Glock as Kieren & Paul had done their homework, so we made Sian & Chris suffer because of it!Of course there's a fair amount of tangents too and if you want to join in with the chat during the races (along with practice and qualifying) head over to our Discord where there's always a great crowd of people to watch along with. Florida is known for orange things, mainly oranges. But this weekend it was a slightly different shade that captured all the headlines in Miami as we saw a hugely dominent showing from the Papaya clad McLaren team at the Miami Grand Prix weekend. Taking the top 2 steps on the podium in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races showed that this season the comeback is fully on!This week on the pod we take a look at the Maimi GP raced round the car park of the Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Football Franchise (well that's what it said on the official F1 shirts anyway) where Lando & Oscar traded wins across Friday and Saturday with just about everyone else as an also-ran.There's the usual team by team review and look at what the F1 news is at the moment and what will probably come out after this pod's released (come on Tuesday, show us what you've got) with all the speculation from the aftermath of his lap 1 exit that we may have seen the last of Jack Doohan for now in an Alpine.Expect the usual tangents as well and also the return of Dan while Kieren is sunning himself touring the breweries of California!
