Merry Halloween everyone! Some of our listeners might call this episode a double decker bust but the rest of you pissants will recognize it as the best podcast about Buddy Holly and the 166th greatest album of all time, 20 Golden Greats. Before we get to the music we think it over and talk about leprechaun tag, the best things to do in San Francisco, and concerts at the Vegas Sphere. We also revive our annual graveyard smash with a list of the scariest songs of all time. Then at (52:00) we share some words of love on 20 Golden Greats, the greatest hits album by Buddy Holly & the Crickets. Can't you picture your grandpa fumbling a bra to these hits? We discuss how Buddy Holly is credited with the rock-and-roll lineup, the story behind Peggy Sue, and the best songs featuring the Bo Diddley Beat. Over the next week you can enjoy the silence, but next Tuesday we'll be back with the sweetest perfection when we become the best Depeche Mode podcast and discuss their electronic music album, Violator.

4:50-5:00. Wow, Shatner is a mindful astronaut and Wow, Shatner is an astronaut and she had a nice hand. Colors and spaceships and an introductory insertion.! Colors and spaceships and a revealing insertion. Foundation, the best SciFi series! But the lack of humor is a concern. Doomed. Epic. Merry Halloween. When two holidays collide. Start with getting comfy with ten seconds but HA! Delight in extending it for minutes, maybe hundreds of starfish years... All things are non-self— when one sees this with wisdom, one turns away from suffering. This is the path to purification. Dhammapada Sec. 20, #279

This week we’re speaking with Dr. Susan Weissman, who has just published “Final Judgement and the Dead in Medieval Jewish Thought.” Her book delves into Sefer Hasidim, a Hebrew-language moralistic text written in the 13th century in Ashkenaz. The men who wrote it were part of the German Pietists sect, which was known for its extreme forms of penitence, including sitting in vermin or setting themselves on fire. The era was one of change for Jewish liturgy and the Medieval pre-occupation with sin and the afterlife was not lost on the Jewish communities. It’s during this time that the mourner’s Kaddish emerges, as well as the Yizkor service, which commemorates the souls of loved ones. Susan concentrated her study on a collection of ghost stories that appear in Sefer Hasidim. We’ll discuss how these ascetic Jews were influenced by their Christian neighbors while Susan dissects an interesting ghost story. Image: A page from Sefer Hasidim. (Courtesy)

Once again, it is late October, and on Free the Show, we’re pretty keen on celebrating the holidays, no matter how trite and tired certain tropes might be. To wit - everyone knows what happens on Halloween, and yet here we are again bonding over an open fire, singing carols and exchanging gifts with loved ones, and it always manages to feel fresh and pure once again. Maybe it’s that untouched blanket of snow on the ground that purges any impurities away from our rotten souls. Merry Halloween, listeners, and to all a good night.Listen to Episode 206
