Over half of all company bankruptcies happen within 12 months of a record sales month. Not a bad month. A record month. If that stat doesn't stop you in your tracks, this episode will. Most entrepreneurs treat cash flow as an afterthought, something to deal with at tax time or when the bank starts calling. But cash flow isn't just a finance topic. It's the blood running through the veins of your business. In this episode, Karl and George pull back the curtain on what's really happening when businesses grow fast and quietly collapse, why scaling from the inside out is the only sustainable path, and how to stop flying blind by actually building a relationship with your numbers. Whether you're running a six-figure service business or a multi-million dollar company, this conversation will change how you look at every dollar in your business. What You'll Learn In This Episode: Why more sales can actually make a cash flow crisis worse and what to do instead The 12-week cash flow forecast tool that CFOs use to see trouble before it arrives The single biggest difference between entrepreneurs who scale and those who plateau How to shrink your way to more cash (and why this works) Why delegation isn't optional if you want to grow How to bet on your business with data, not emotion The hidden cost of having the wrong person in the wrong seat What risk management actually means for a small business owner Key Takeaways: ✔️Cash flow is the only thing that truly keeps a business alive. You can survive without profit. You cannot survive without cash. ✔️The 12-week cash flow forecast is your most powerful planning tool. It's not about looking backward, it's about seeing what's coming so you can act before it's a problem. ✔️Record sales can be a death sentence if you're not prepared for the cash cycle. Growth consumes cash before it creates it. ✔️Scaling comes from subtraction, not addition. Finding and cutting hidden inefficiencies often has more impact than chasing new revenue. ✔️Getting the right people in the right seats and being willing to move the wrong ones is a cash flow lever most owners ignore. ✔️The two ways entrepreneurs face their numbers: by choice or by force. Choice gives you control. Force does not. ✔️Stop making decisions based on money that hasn't landed yet. A signed contract is not cash. ✔️You don't have to manage cash flow alone. A fractional CFO, a sharp bookkeeper, or a strategic accountant can sit in it with you. ✔️One change a month, done consistently, compounds into doubling your business in two years. Dr. T flies solo in this episode and hosts guest Otto Maier in a discussion on psychedelic therapy through depth psychology and lived experience. Otto describes his early work with ayahuasca and a pivotal, overwhelming initiation with 5 MeO DMT that led to a prolonged spiritual and psychological crisis. Instead of framing the experience as positive or negative, though, he emphasizes the meaning it held for him. It taught him, among other things, the importance of preparation, appropriate dosing, and trauma-informed facilitation. Dr. T and Otto unpack psychedelic healing within a harm reduction framework while challenging simplified narratives often found in the field. The discussion examines the tension between clinical models that prioritize symptom reduction and a soul-oriented approach to healing. Otto draws on Jungian psychology and archetypal theory to describe how psychedelic experiences can unfold as nonlinear processes that disrupt identity and access deeper layers of the psyche. Dr. T and Otto suggest that meaningful transformation may include disorientation and existential questioning, rather than immediate improvement, which points to limitations in current research practices. Together, they also explore the cultural divide between Western models of control and more relational, animistic perspectives. Psychedelic work is framed as an invitation to engage with uncertainty, embodiment, and the unconscious, countering the dominant concepts of cognition and productivity. The episode advocates for an integrated approach of both scientific rigor and soul-based inquiry, emphasizing ethical responsibility and the complexity of medicine-assisted healing. “I think that the soul work is something that gets us in touch with the nature of our being. And I think it includes a bit of mystery.” - Otto Maier __ Contact Punk Therapy: Patreon: Patreon.com/PunkTherapy Website: PunkTherapy.com Email: info@punktherapy.com Contact Truth Fairy: Email: Truth@PunkTherapy.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Also mi dücht, dat schulln wi ni vergeeten. Un ook wenn mi dat düchti leed deiht, wat allns an slimme Sooken in de Welt passeert – ick heff düsse Doog blots Oogen för dat wat so scheun üm uns rüm is. Ganz direkt vör de Huusdöör oder vör de Stadt. Ick mok eenfach mol 'n Paus‘ vun all de slimmen Norichen un lot de Seel‘ mol so richti scheun baumeln. Dat deiht sowat vun good, dor finn ick gor keen Wöörd vör. Un veellicht mokt Ju je ook eenfach mol 'n Week oder blots 'n poor Dog Paus‘. Op jeden Fall wünsch ick Ju 'n richti scheun‘ Mai… In düssen Sinn

(It'll all become clear in the episode.) We discuss the ethical implications of AI in enhancing human capabilities versus diminishing them, particularly for students. We also delve into the relationship between Freudian language theory and modern AI. Despite its current limitations, there's also a very interesting potential for AI use in historical martial arts research, where we could use it to provide new insights without modern biases. Ihr seid bei On the Way to New Work, heute mit Dominik Maier.
On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast, Hank interviews Dr. Paul Maier, former Russell H. Seibert Professor of Ancient History at Western Michigan University, about the DVD The Week that Changed the World. Hank and Dr. Maier discuss the significance of Holy Week, those who erroneously deny the fatal torment of Jesus, extra-biblical evidence for the life of Christ that corresponds to Scripture, and more questions and misinformation surrounding the most important week in all of history.
In this episode, Dr. Brendan McCarthy—Chief Medical Officer at Protea Medical Center—dives into one of the most misunderstood topics in health: Why does it feel like you can't stick to a diet… even when you're trying your best? This isn't about willpower. It's not a character flaw. And it's not your fault. Dr. McCarthy breaks down the biology behind stress, cravings, and weight gain—explaining how chronic stress rewires your brain, alters decision-making, and drives you toward hyper-palatable, ultra-processed foods. YouTube citations : 1. Arnsten, Amy F. T. “Stress Weakens Prefrontal Networks: Molecular Insults to Higher Cognition.” Nature Neuroscience, vol. 18, no. 10, 2015, pp. 1376–1385. Why it is here: Foundational paper for the claim that uncontrollable stress increases catecholamine signaling in the prefrontal cortex and degrades higher-order control, working memory, and inhibition. This is one of the strongest anchors for the idea that stress makes the pause smaller. 2. Schwabe, Lars, et al. “Concurrent Glucocorticoid and Noradrenergic Activity Shifts Instrumental Behavior from Goal-Directed to Habitual Control.” Journal of Neuroscience, vol. 30, no. 24, 2010, pp. 8190–8196. Why it is here: One of the most important papers for your “click-boom” model. It shows that stress chemistry can bias behavior away from goal-directed control and toward habit-like responding. That is not a morality argument. It is control architecture. 3. Plessow, Franziska, et al. “The Stressed Prefrontal Cortex and Goal-Directed Behaviour: Acute Psychosocial Stress Impairs the Flexible Implementation of Task Goals.” Experimental Brain Research, vol. 216, no. 3, 2012, pp. 397–408. Why it is here: Strong support for the claim that acute psychosocial stress impairs flexible goal implementation. Useful when you want to say that under stress, the person may still know what matters but have reduced access to that guidance in the moment. 4. Maier, Silvia U., et al. “Acute Stress Impairs Self-Control in Goal-Directed Choice by Altering Multiple Functional Connections within the Brain's Decision Circuits.” Neuron, vol. 87, no. 3, 2015, pp. 621–631. Why it is here: Excellent for the food-choice angle. This paper supports the idea that stress increases the weight of immediately rewarding attributes and reduces self-control. In your language, the cue gets louder and the future gets quieter. 5. Epel, Elissa, et al. “Stress May Add Bite to Appetite in Women: A Laboratory Study of Stress-Induced Cortisol and Eating Behavior.” Psychoneuroendocrinology, vol. 26, no. 1, 2001, pp. 37–49. Why it is here: Classic paper, directly in women, directly in Psychoneuroendocrinology. Strong support for linking stress physiology, cortisol reactivity, and post-stress eating behavior. 6. Giddens, Emily E., et al. “The Influence of Stress on the Neural Underpinnings of Disinhibited Eating: A Systematic Review and Future Directions for Research.” Reviews in Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders, 2023. Why it is here: A modern review tying stress to food-related reward sensitivity, interoception, and cognitive control in disinhibited eating. Good bridge reference for the overall brain-food-stress model. 7. Lyu, Z., et al. “Acute Stressors Reduce Neural Inhibition to Food Cues and Increase Eating Among Binge Eating Disorder Symptomatic Women.” Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2016. Why it is here: Helpful for the specific claim that acute stress can reduce inhibitory neural responsiveness to food cues and increase eating in vulnerable women. Strong fit for the cue-reactivity piece. Dr. Brendan McCarthy is the founder and Chief Medical Officer of Protea Medical Center in Arizona. With over two decades of experience, he's helped thousands of patients navigate hormonal imbalances using bioidentical HRT, nutrition, and root-cause medicine. He's also taught and mentored other physicians on integrative approaches to hormone therapy, weight loss, fertility, and more. If you're ready to take your health seriously, this podcast is a great place to start.

In 2015, the media became obsessed with one man's attempts to grow tea in the Scottish Highlands. The BBC profiled him on the One Show. Radio reporters flocked to interview him. Even the Chinese national news agency reported his work. Tam O'Braan (as he was then known) was the first to ever sell Scottish tea, and the press went wild. Fornum and Mason bought his leaves. The Dorchester created a new Scottish tea-tasting menu. Barack Obama reportedly tried his tea, and the Queen loved it. Tam's business started bringing in hundreds of thousands of pounds. But soon his lies began to unravel. Today, with Jaega Wise, we tell the story of the Scottish tea scandal. We explain how Tam O'Brann fooled the world and the psychology behind why so many customers believed him. --- Listen to the BBC Food Program's show on the scandal: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002mn01 Learn more about Jaega: https://www.jaegawise.com/ Unlock the Nudge Vaults: https://www.nudgepodcast.com/vaults Join 10,828 readers of my newsletter: https://www.nudgepodcast.com/mailing-list Connect on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/phill-agnew/ --- Today's sources: Koschate-Fischer, N., Diamantopoulos, A., & Oldenkotte, K. A recent 59:23 half-marathon for American long-distance star Alex Maier wasn't a case of him catching lightning in a bottle. It was the culmination of years of quiet dominance: from Oklahoma State to national titles, American records, and a seamless transition to the roads. And with his stellar race in Houston, he's now the second-fastest U.S. man of all time at the half-marathon distance. But this isn't a random one-off occurrence. In 2025, he won the Düsseldorf Marathon in April with a time of 2:08:33; it was a top-15 all-time mark for a U.S. runner. He also claimed his first national title in March in Atlanta, running 1:00:48 to secure a spot on Team USA; and then set a 10-mile American record of 45:15 at the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in April. He was a former standout at Oklahoma State, where he earned multiple First-Team All-America honors, including a 5th-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships. He also placed in the top 10 at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 3,000m and 5,000m in 2023.He's gone from NCAA standout to national champion; from American records at 10 miles on the road to becoming the second-fastest U.S. half marathoner ever. His trajectory is impossible to ignore. And the most interesting part? It all feels like he's just getting started.Tap into the Alex Maier Special. In the early summer of 1984, seventeen-year-old Gary Lauwers was murdered by his friend Richard “Ricky” Kasso in the small Long Island suburb of Northport, New York. Lauwers was stabbed more than thirty times in the attack and his body showed signs of what appeared to be torture. The death itself was shocking to the tiny community of Northport, but the details that emerged in the wake of Kasso's arrest would shock the entire nation.ReferencesBreskin, Davkd. 1984. Alex is an associate professor of psychology at Vanderbilt University where he heads the Maier Lab. His work in neuroscience spans vision, visual perception, and cognition, studying the neurophysiology of cortical columns, and other related topics. Today, he is here to discuss where his focus has shifted over the past few years, the neuroscience of consciousness. I should say shifted back, since that was his original love, which you'll hear about. I've known Alex since my own time at Vanderbilt, where I was a postdoc and he was a new faculty member, and I remember being impressed with him then. I was at a talk he gave - job talk or early talk - where it was immediately obvious how passionate and articulate he is about what he does, and I remember he even showed off some of his telescope photography - good pictures of the moon, I remember. Anyway, we always had fun interactions, even if sometimes it was a quick hello as he ran up stairs and down hallways to get wherever he was going, always in a hurry. Today we discuss why Alex sees integration information theory as the most viable current prospect for explaining consciousness. That is mainly because IIT has developed a formalized mathematical account that hopes to do for consciousness what other math has done for physics, that is, give us what we know as laws of nature. So basically our discussion revolves around everything related to that, like philosophy of science, distinguishing mathematics from "the mathematical", some of the tools he is finding valuable, like category theory, and some of his work measuring the level of consciousness IIT says a whole soccer team has, not just the individuals that comprise the team. Today's poem is Alarm Clock by Jennifer Maier. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Maggie writes … “When I travel away from my kids, I have to coordinate our calls, which means demystifying the difference between my time and their time. “I'm three hours behind you in California” or “I'm seven hours ahead of you in Greece.” All of this talk about “my time” and “your time” is so odd, anyway, when you think about it—as if any time is ours. That's ours, O-U-R-S. No pun intended.”Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. Every donation makes a difference: https://tinyurl.com/rjm4synp
