What's up, dudes? Is it BAB-ar or BaBAR? Michael May from After Lunch, Crestwood House, and Hellbent for Letterbox and I try to figure it out. Yes, we're talking about “Babar and Father Christmas!”Arthur, Pom, Flora, and Alexander, the royal elephant children, are playing with their monkey pal, Zephir. Soon he tells them that in man's world, Father Christmas delivers presents to good boys and girls on Christmas Eve! After their amazement subsides, they write Father Christmas a wish list letter, but are disappointed when they don't get a reply. Ultimately, this leads to Babar's realization that the Elephants' Country needs to be included in Santa's regular route. The King goes to heroic lengths to make his children's' wishes come true. First, he goes to the city and befriends an artist's model. From there, he meets a geography professor with a map to Santa's workshop. Babar makes the trek up north, and he and Father Christmas become fast friends. Father Christmas even gets to take a much needed rest in the tropical climate of Babar's country. He also gifts Babar a magical flying suit to distribute presents on Christmas Eve.Saxophone-playing Rhino antagonists? Check. Barbarian Babar? In a joke. Elves who've never seen a flamingo? Only if they look like gnomes! So grab your crown, hop on a train to the city, and check your maps to this episode on “Babar and Father Christmas!”After LunchGive us a buzz! Ho-Ho-Ho, wait till you hear about the gifts I'm giving to some of America's power elites for Christmas. To each of our Congress critters, I give my fondest wish that from now on they receive the exact same income, health care, and pensions that we average citizens get. If they receive only the American average, it might make them a bit more humble – and less cavalier about ignoring the needs of regular folks. To the stockings of GOP leaders who've so eagerly debased themselves to serve the madness of Donald Trump, I'm adding individual spritzer bottles of fragrances like “Essence of Integrity” and “Eau de Self-respect” to help cover up their stench. And in the stockings of Democratic congressional leaders, I'm giving “Spice of Viagra” and “Bouquet du Grassroots” to stiffen their spines and remind them of who they represent. For America's CEO's, my gift is a beautifully boxed, brand-new set of corporate ethics. It's called the golden rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Going to pollute someone's neighborhood? Then, you have to live there, too. Going to slash wages and benefits? Then, slash yours as well. Going to move your manufacturing to sweatshops in China? Then, put your office right inside the worst sweatshop. Executive life won't be as luxurious, but CEO's would glow with a new purity of spirit. To the Wall Street hedge-fund hucksters who've conglomerated, plundered, and degraded hundreds of America's newspapers, I'm sending copies of “Journalism for Dummies” and offered jobs for each of them in their stripped-down, Dickensian newsrooms. Good luck. And what better gift to the Trump family – Donald, Ivanka and Jared, Eric, Donnie Jr., and the whole nest of them – than to wish that they live with each other constantly and permanently. No, really, each of you deserve it.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. What's up, dudes? Motown! The sound defined the ‘60s, the acts brought joy to everyone. Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and I dive into the wonderfully odd “Motown Merry Christmas!” From the Temptations to Smokey Robinson, this one celebrates Christmas the Motown way…with several non-Motown acts?!Hosted by Miami Vice's Philip Michael Thomas, the special begins with a version of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The Temptations then sell it hard with a rendition of “White Christmas” à la The Drifters. After the Pointer Sisters nail “Santa Claus is Comin' to Town,” Santa Redd Foxx and elf Marsha Warfield provide some comedy. Following that, Ronnie Spector and Darlene Love sing a Christmas medley with awkward transitions between each song. They kill it so hard, though! Great stuff!Desiree Coleman, Smokey Robinson, and Natalie Cole wow the audience with soulful carols. Of course, the Temptations sing “Silent Night.” There's more comedy bits with Foxx and Warfield, then Run DMC and Stephanie Mills get turns to provide holiday music. Carrie McDowell, Ronnie, Darlene, and the whole crew sing us out!Tubbs? Check. Roz? Of course. Fred Sanford? Only if he can be Santa! What's up, dudes? Alamo City Santa Jeremy Phelps joins me to dive into the 1986 made-for-tv movie “Christmas Eve!” Starring Loretta Young and Rachel's dad from “Friends,” this melodrama has charm! Although Amanda Kingsley is now extremely wealthy, she remembers her hardscrabble upbringing. She now spends her time trying to help the less fortunate around her. Conversely, her business-minded son, Andrew, has never wanted for anything, and has become hardhearted. Upon receiving bad medical news, Amanda engages down-at-heel private investigator Morris Huffner to track down Andrew's three estranged children. She desperately longs for one final family Christmas.Huffner tracks down the youngest first. He is now a country singer, and vaguely knows the whereabouts of his sister. Of course, Huffner uses the lead to track down the young lady, and seemingly falls for her. Finally, Huffner finds the oldest son, who had dodged the draft by fleeing to Canada. They all come together and force a change of heart on Andrew.A philanthropic protagonist? Check. A miserly antagonist? Got it. An Alfred Pennyworth-like butler? Definitely! Here's a festive-to-classified mashup for your latest Late For Changeover soirée: Jingle bells meet jet engines as Santa lights up the NORAD radar screen for the 70th year, proving even Saint Nick needs aerospace surveillance (07:25). A Coast Guard chopper in Puerto Rico spirals into a merry “Ho Ho Ho” holding pattern, cheerleading holiday spirits over warm Caribbean waves (14:42). Then the sleigh suddenly dives into the classified archives. The Alsos Mission of 1943 hunted Nazi nuclear secrets like a Christmas scavenger hunt in occupied Europe (26:56). Project Pluto's atomic-powered SLAM missile promised a doomsday stocking stuffer capable of circling the globe with apocalyptic endurance (34:33). And over the stormy skies of Vietnam, Operation Popeye tried to weaponize the weather itself, coaxing rain to bog down enemy supply lines (41:08). From candy canes on radar scopes to Cold War nightmare tech, this episode unwraps the strange stocking where holiday cheer and military history keep bumping elbows like elves undercover in a classified hangar.

What's up, dudes? It's the greatest store ever to an ‘80s kid! Yes, it's Toys “R” Us, the category killer! Today we're talking the Toys “R” Us Christmas Dream Book 1985!Toys “R” Us goes all the way back to 1948, when Charles Lazarus opened a little Washington, D.C. shop called Children's Bargain Town, selling baby furniture. Eventually he pivoted from cribs and strollers to playthings. In 1957, Lazarus opened the first store under the Toys “R” Us name, built like a supermarket for toys—long aisles, stacked shelves, self-service shopping, and wall-to-wall kids' stuff. This book provides a huge variety of toys. From ThunderCats to Cabbage Patch Kids, there's something for everyone. The My Little Pony Dream Castle provided hours of fun, and Snake Mountain gave the evil warriors a lair to lure Eternian Heroes. What? A snowball fight at the North Pole—Old Mrs. Moody vs. Santa's elves? Yes, that happens in this Christmastime adventure! It all started ... while Christmas shopping at the new bookstore in town, Catbaloo and Old Mrs. Moody find the most beautiful Christmas book they have ever seen. Inside, a picture of Santa's workshop is so delightful, they want to jump right into it and be part of it. And that is exactly what they do! At the count of three, they close their eyes and, with their imagination, they "JUMP" into the book! In the blink of an eye, they find themselves at the North Pole. When Old Mrs. Moody accidentally starts a snowball fight with the elves and it quickly gets out of control, the elves decide to invite them into the workshop to dry off and warm up. Inside, they see the elves making toys—baby dolls that say "mama," remote-control cars and trucks that zip and zigzag across the floor, and bicycles being polished to a high shine for Christmas morning. What's up, dudes? You never knew Santa had a donkey? Well, Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas and Alamo City Santa Jeremy Phelps did. In fact, they're here with me to talk all about the Rankin Bass special “Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey!”Nestor was born with abnormally long ears. His owner mistreated him, and the other animals teased him. One night when Roman soldiers came to the stable to buy donkeys, they dismiss Nestor and take all the other donkeys for free. Enraged, Olaf casts Nestor out into the frigid cold. Nestor's mother finds him and shields from the harsh weather with her own body, freezing to death in the process. The next day, Nestor meets a cherub named Tilly, who says that they need to travel to Bethlehem. When they reach the outskirts of the town, Tilly returns to Heaven, instructing Nestor to wait. When Mary and Joseph are expecting Jesus, they take Nestor because of his "gentle eyes", but are caught in a sandstorm. In the midst of the storm, Nestor hears Tilly's voice, but recognizes it as his mother's. She tells him to follow the voices of the angels. Nestor guides Mary and Joseph through the storm, while wrapping Mary in his ears to keep her warm. They arrive in Bethlehem, where Nestor finds the stable where Mary gives birth to Jesus. Nestor heads back home where he is hailed as hero by Olaf and the other animals. Santa? Check. The Holy Family? Yep. Spieltoe? Never thought Santa had a pack mule! What's up, dudes? There's nothing like a Christmas jazz house song to kick off a party. I've got Steve Beech of Uplifting House Sessions with me to dive into the opening track of Winter Warnerland! Yes, we're talking Jeff Lorber “God Rest the House!”Jeff Lorber is an American keyboardist and composer specializing in jazz and fusion. After attending the Berklee College of Music, he played with Michael Brecker and John Scofield. Eventually he started Jeff Lorber Fusion and released his first album in 1977. He frequently played on Rhodes, Minimoog, and Prophet 5 keyboards. He subsequently went solo and had several singles on Billboard Dance charts. As the Winter Warnerland liner notes state:“He's the guy who first brought you Karen White with their smash hit, The Facts of Love. Kenny G, his former sax player and right now is one of the hottest session cats out there. You can hear his magic touch on current hits from U2, Pebbles, New Edition, Giant Steps, New Shoes, The California Raisins, Sheena Easton and Jeffrey Osborne. Those are just the ones he's played on this month. And you know he's saving up the good stuff for his next WB LP due sometime in 89. Even though he's a busy guy, he managed to crank out a hot house mix version of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen for us. Turn it up!”Driving bass line? Check. Syncopated version of the melody? Got it. What's up, dudes? It's the 40th anniversary of Santa Claus: The Movie! Pax Holley from Cult Film Club, Crestwood House, and I Read Movies is with me to talk all about the novelization! Santa Claus: The Movie was released in 1985, and it chronicled the origin of the Jill old elf himself. Eventually, it transitions into anDudley Moore vehicle as his elf character Patch takes center stage. Patch feels unappreciated and sets out into the world to prove himself. The novelization fills some plot points the movie left out due to time constraints. For example, the elves used to deliver the gifts themselves, but stopped as it grew harder. Also, in preparation for the big flight, they built a simulator for Santa. The novelization even explains why Santa has to go down chimneys due to modern man's lack of trust in one another. Oh, and Patch returns to the Pole and shares Santa's assistant duties with Puffy.Sleigh flight simulator? Check. Confirmation of Cornelia's adoption? For sure. Kids writing letters to Santa apologizing for their lack of faith? Definitely! So grab your stardust, eat some magic candy canes, and fly into this episode on the novelization of Santa Claus: The Movie!Cult Film ClubFB: @CultFilmClub Twitter: @CFCPod IG: @cultfilmclub Hellbent for LetterboxGive us a buzz!
