What's up, dudes? Attention, Kmart shoppers! Yes, we're talking all about the home of the blue light special. It's a Kmart Christmas! Vinnie Brezinsky from Huey and Bax and Nicholas Pepin of Pop Culture Roulette join me live to watch some ‘80s Kmart Christmas commercials! The store that would become Kmart was founded by SS Kresge after he met Frank Woolworth. Inspired by his stores, Kresge invested in a five-and-dime which did well enough for him to open a store in Detroit. In 1912 he incorporated in Delaware with 85 stores.In January 1962 he opened the first Kmart, and in 1981, the 2000th Kmart was open.Subsequently, 1985 saw Kmart convert one of its in-store cafeterias into a Little Caesar's. Throughout the ‘80s they were the 2nd largest retailer after Sears until 1990 when Walmart passed them.These  commercials   show a variety of products from the ‘80s, including phones and clothes. There's even an ad for Christmas portraits!Catchy jingles? Check. Cheesy, saccharine messages? Of course.  Comic strip  shenanigans? Definitely! What's up, dudes? Merry Christmas 2!! “Santa Claus: The Movie” is a fantastic origin story, made better by Henry Mancini's score and a killer song of Sheena Easton. Thus, Robert Nicholas from Behind the Bells joins me to really dig into a particular cue from the “Santa Claus: The Movie” score and dish about the Christmas carol medley of it all as well.First, we get into the nostalgic synths with "It's Christmas All Over the World". Played during the end credits, the mid-tempo song set the stage for the emotions of Christmas, washing over the audience like a warm blanket. Written originally with Freddie Mercury in mind, the song eventually was recorded by Sheena Easton. Likewise, the film also features a track by Aled Jones of "The Snowman" fame.Mancini purposely chose to score and arrange the orchestra as traditionally as possible. Subsequently, his score evoked a sense of wistfulness and comfort, harking back to days of yore. According to an interview with Randall D Larson for CinemaScore in 1987, Mancini stated:"One thing we had to satisfy was that you can't have picture about Christmas or Santa Claus and not touch on the traditional. I decided that it would be a good idea to get all of those numbers in one place, rather than spotting them here and there throughout the film. So on Santa's first flight I used them in a piece by itself, and it all worked out well because the montage was well conceived and it made sense. But from there on we went to original music.”Of course, the piece he was speaking of was "Christmas Rhapsody." The cue begins with a triumphant rendition of Deck the Halls before segueing into Joy to the World. A melodic and intimate version of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing follows, succeeded by The 12 Days of Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, and O Tannenbaum. Finally, the cue ends with majesty and serenity with The First Noel and Silent Night.Tchaikovsky-esque instrumentation? Check. Catchy Santa Claus theme? Got it. Synthesizer? Yes, but only if a pop star is singing! What's up, dudes? “Gremlins” is a classic holiday horror, made better by Jerry Goldsmith's score and the killer hits of Michael Sembello and Peter Gabriel. Kevin Williams from ‘Tis the Soundtrack joins me to really dig into a couple of cues from the “Gremlins” score and dish about music theory of it all as well.We first get into the mega madness with the Sembello track. Played during the bar scene, the uptempo dance song set the stage for the “Maniac”-like antics of the dancing green creature. The film also features a track by Quarterflash and Darlene Love's epically classic “Christmas.”Goldsmith's penchant for atonality shines forth in the frantic cue ‘No Santa Claus.' The Stravinsky-esque eighths are composed of dueling tritones E-Bb and D-Ab and immediately transition to alternating bars of 5/8 and 7/8. Subsequently, all this segues quite nicely into held sonorities overlaid with “Silent Night” as Kate begins her tale of holiday woe. Talk about harmonization!Altered mystic chord? Check. Catchy mogwai theme? Got it. Synthesizer? Yes, but only if there's 7 different types! What's up, dudes? Remember GI Joe? This real American hero was developed by Stan Weston and licensed and produced by Hasbro in 1963. They even coined the phrase “action figure” to help market the toys to boys. In 1966, the British toy company Palitoy licensed GI Joe and created their version: Action Man. Action Man was primarily developed with British military themes in mind. To set themselves apart, Palitoy even developed flocked hair and gripping hands, though of course they eventually crossed over to the GI Joe line. Consequently, time kills most toy lines, and sales dwindled until GI Joe relaunched itself in 1982 with 3 ¾ inch figures to compete with Kenner's Star Wars figures. To keep up, Palitoy rebranded Action Man as Action Force, a mixture of international soldiers and specialists from Britain, Germany, Australia, and, of course, America. In ‘83 they were given file cards and character profiles and even had their own comic strip, Battle Action Force! Action Force battled the terrorist organization Red Shadows led by Baron Ironblood. Meanwhile, the Action Force toyline branched out into video games, audio stories on cassette tapes, stationery, and even toiletries. In ‘85, however, Alfred Pallett passed away, and Hasbro bought out Palitoy, including their factory, copyrights, and molds. Basically they just produced GI Joe figures under the Action Force name. In fact, Action Force even began fighting Cobra rather than Red Shadows. Even the cartoon was retitled and re-dubbed as Action Force with its own theme song! In ‘86, the Battle Action Force comic strip was canceled, and Marvel UK began publishing a weekly comic in ‘87. Action Force #43 from Dec 26, 1987 includes a Christmas story entitled "Silent Night." The snow may be deep and crisp and even inside the Norwegian arctic circle, but the Christmas celebrations turn a little sour for Footloose and Frostbite when a squad of Cobra snow serpents come visiting — and they aren't there for a kiss under the mistletoe! Explosions? Check. Harsh weather condition battles? Got 'em. Plum pudding MREs? Definitely! So grab your laser rifles, hop on your Snow Cat, and defeat Cobra with this episode!Give us a buzz! To celebrate, I've got Thom Crowe from ‘Tis the Podcast and Art Kilmer from A Cozy Christmas with to talk about the 1981 episode of SuperBook “The First Christmas!”Once again, several Gospel pericopes are concatenated in this New Testament-inspired episode. While feeling nostalgic and missing his mother at Christmas, Chris, Joy, and his robot toy Gizmo find themselves transported by the mystical book. When the psychedelia settles, they stare up in awe at a vast dessert from another time!  Finding themselves in the 1st century BC Holy Land, the trio arrive during the time for Caesar Augustus's decree. Accordingly, St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary make the trek to Bethlehem, their ancestral home. Simultaneously the Magi follow a star to Bethlehem in search of a new king. The trio meet the Holy Family and journey with them to the same town. That night they see the Angel's proclamation of great joy, and follow some shepherds to the inn where Jesus was born. They also foil Herod's plot to have the Magi followed and the child killed. Having saved the day, they return to their time and celebrate Christmas properly.An inn with no room? Check. Magi following a star? Got it. Adoring the Holy Family? Definitely! What's up, dudes? Remember Band Aid and its mega-hit “Do They Know It's Christmas?” It spun off countless relief efforts, including Carol Aid 1985. Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas introduced me to this concert, and he's here to talk about its MTV and Music Box broadcast!Carol Aid was a famine relief concert held at the club Heaven in London. MTV and Music Box aired a cut down version, leaving out several acts. In fact, the likes of Magnum, Captain Sensible, and Miquel Brown (to name a few) were cut for time. It's quite unbelievable.Cliff Richard kicked off the broadcast version with “Another Christmas Day,” while John Parr sang “Once in Royal David's City.” Meanwhile, the Fixx pressed for donations and sang “Peace On Earth,” a hidden track from their following album. Subsequently, the event ended with the entire roster singing “Do They Know It's Christmas?” rather heartily.Chris De Burgh? Check. Anita Harris? She was there. Toto Coelo and the Flying Pickets? Specifically, we're digging into the short story “I'll Be Doom for Christmas!”Santa arrives at Doom's castle on Christmas Eve, but is ensnared by one of Doom's traps. The injured Santa convinces Doom to deliver the remaining presents by agreeing to give him his heart's desire. Doom does so, but isn't super stealthy at Avengers Mansion, waking several Avengers who tail him quietly.Subsequently, he heads to the Baxter Building and is attacked by the Fantastic Four despite his protests of innocence. In fact, the Thing punches him and he flies several blocks. Finally fed up, he begins to defend himself against the heroes, and it's revealed they're battling in front of a hospital for sickly children. Of course, Doom tells a little girl the heroes are here to help him pass out toys, and he embraces her in a hug. Weeks pass, and Santa is finally healed. As he leaves he tells Doom he'll grant his wish, but Doom says it's been taken care of. He's cradling the teddy bear of the little girl from the hospital.John Byrne art? Check. Scott Lobdell script? Got it. Heartwarming ending? Yeah, Doom's a softy. [SEGMENT 1-1] A Very MAGA Christmas 1   As we gather around the Christmas tree this year, sipping eggnog and humming carols, let us reflect on what has been a truly remarkable year for the MAGA movement. It feels almost like a Christmas miracle—or perhaps a whole series of them—that Donald Trump has once again triumphed over the never-ending shenanigans of the Left. From Alvin Bragg's legal circus to Letitia James' wild goose chases, and from the media's collective meltdown to the implosion of Biden's administration, 2024 has been the gift that keeps on giving. So, let's unwrap this year's highlights and sprinkle in some holiday cheer.The Year Kicked Off With Indictment Mania Remember when Alvin Bragg thought he'd deliver the fatal blow to Trump's political career with his "stormy" case involving hush money? Bragg's legal theories were so bizarre they made Rube Goldberg machines look straightforward. While the Manhattan DA was busy turning legal gymnastics into performance art, Trump was busy rallying the nation. Even CNN's legal analysts had to sheepishly admit Bragg's case lacked the teeth they'd hoped for (source). And then there was Fani Willis down in Georgia, valiantly trying to turn a phone call into a criminal enterprise. Her case fizzled faster than a cheap sparkler on New Year's Eve, but not before exposing how desperate the Left had become to smear Trump.  [SEGMENT 1-2] A Very MAGA ChristmasThe DOJ's 91 Indictments: All Smoke, No Fire Special Counsel Jack Smith may have managed to stack 91 indictments against Trump, but let's be honest: it was like Geraldo Rivera opening Al Capone's vault. Nothing to see here, folks. Instead of taking Trump down, Smith inadvertently made him the political version of John Wick: the more they attacked, the stronger he became. Even MSNBC had to admit the indictments weren't landing as intended (source). Meanwhile, the DOJ itself unraveled under the weight of its hypocrisy. Hunter Biden's laptop? Ignored. Classified documents at Biden's Delaware home? Brushed under the rug. But try as they might, the American public saw through the double standards. Poll after poll revealed waning trust in the DOJ and FBI, culminating in Christopher Wray's resignation. A Christmas miracle indeed!Santa's New Elves: Trump's Appointments This year, Trump began assembling his administration-in-waiting, and oh, what a lineup it is! Each appointee is a present under the MAGA tree, guaranteed to send shivers down Leftist spines.Mike Davis (Attorney General): Known for his fierce takedowns of judicial overreach, Davis is set to bring the DOJ back in line. Leftists are already clutching their pearls at the thought of real accountability.Kash Patel (Director of National Intelligence): Patel's no-nonsense approach to exposing the Russia hoax makes him the perfect choice to clean house in the intelligence community.Ric Grenell (UN Ambassador): The Left loathes Grenell for his unapologetic America-first diplomacy. Expect him to give the UN a much-needed reality check.Each of these appointments signals a return to common sense and patriotism, and the Left's fear is palpable.The Media's Slow and Painful Demise Let's take a moment to appreciate the glorious collapse of mainstream media. CNN's ratings hit all-time lows, and even their golden girl Kaitlan Collins couldn't save the sinking ship. Joy Reid's MSNBC show? Barely hanging on. Meanwhile, The View's hosts spent more time screaming at each other than discussing coherent topics. The media's meltdown reached peak hilarity when they tried to spin Trump's victories as failures. When polls showed his approval climbing, they insisted the numbers were rigged. It was like watching someone try to argue that Santa doesn't exist while standing in a room full of presents.Holiday Ironies: Biden, Harris, and the “Ho Ho Ho” of Politics Biden's presidency has become the political equivalent of fruitcake—nobody wants it, but it just won't go away. His cognitive decline became impossible to ignore, even for the most loyal Democrats. And then there's Kamala Harris, the vice president who's been snubbed more times than a re-gifted sweater. The Bidens didn't even include her in their Christmas photo—a move so petty it deserves its own Hallmark movie.Kwanzaa and Kamala: A Tale of Two Fictions Speaking of Harris, her attempts to connect with African-American voters by celebrating Kwanzaa have been nothing short of cringe-inducing. Kwanzaa, much like her authenticity, feels manufactured. The internet had a field day mocking her forced enthusiasm, with memes comparing her to Michael Scott's infamous “Diversity Day” antics.Trump's Victory Lap And now, the pièce de résistance: Trump's victory. Despite the Left's relentless efforts to stop him, he's emerged stronger than ever. His rallies are packed, his base is energized, and his policies are resonating with everyday Americans. It's as if the Grinch tried to steal Christmas but ended up handing out gifts instead.Looking Ahead to 2025 As we head into the new year, the MAGA movement is more united than ever. Trump's second term promises to be a renaissance of American greatness, and the Left's tears will be the icing on the Christmas cookies. So here's to a Merry MAGA Christmas and a Happy New Year! Cheers!        [SEGMENT 1-3] A Very MAGA Christmas 3 – CR   The Kevin Jackson Radio Show: Introduction "Welcome to The Kevin Jackson Radio Show, where we tackle the news the way Democrats handle the truth—recklessly, with a hint of holiday flair. Today, we're diving into the season's hottest topics: doom, debt, and Democrats throwing every trick in their playbook. Because nothing says 'Merry Christmas' like Leftist overreach and apocalyptic predictions. So Merry Xmas from the Democrats who gave us the gift of bigger government spending.Democrats Using the Entire Playbook First, the world will end if we can't fund the government. Forget that we play this little game every year, then we put it on steroids during a presidential transition. In this case, Democrats are jockeying to preserve what they want to call a great presidency, despite them nuking Old Joe into oblivion. Threatening shutdowns, twirling budget debates like a flaming baton. It's like Christmas caroling, but with fewer harmonies and more taxpayer extortion. Democrats claim the world will end if we don't raise the debt ceiling. Isn't it funny how we never run out of ways to spend money we don't have? And interestingly, we never seem to run out of money. Consider this: the national debt balloons yearly, no matter what legislation is passed—Balanced Budget Amendments, Pay-Go rules, you name it. The Democrats' new rallying cry? Save Christmas by saving government jobs. But let's be real. What happens when non-essential government employees are furloughed? Nothing. So, why do we have non-essential employees at all? Isn't “non-essential” just code for “we hired them because we can”? Trump sniffed out their treachery, because the stench of a Democrats can be smelled for miles by even the least sensitive nose. Trump had them rewrite the bill, shrinking it from 1500+ pages to 90ish. And Democrats declined to pass it. Who can blame them, as Trump's bill only contained the necessities and not all the pork Democrats are used to getting. But they do have a good reason to want the old bill: to save Christmas! The Budget Battle: Grinch Edition Now back to Hakeem Jeffries, who warns that without funding, Christmas will collapse. Flights will stop, chaos will ensue, and—wait for it—people will die in the streets. Someone hand this guy a script for It's a Wonderful Life. Funny thing is, every time we hit a budget crisis, the government shuts down briefly, everyone panics, and then… employees get paid anyway. So here's my question: why don't we trim the fat permanently?
