What? A snowball fight at the North Pole—Old Mrs. Moody vs. Santa's elves? Yes, that happens in this Christmastime adventure! It all started ... while Christmas shopping at the new bookstore in town, Catbaloo and Old Mrs. Moody find the most beautiful Christmas book they have ever seen. Inside, a picture of Santa's workshop is so delightful, they want to jump right into it and be part of it. And that is exactly what they do! At the count of three, they close their eyes and, with their imagination, they "JUMP" into the book! In the blink of an eye, they find themselves at the North Pole. When Old Mrs. Moody accidentally starts a snowball fight with the elves and it quickly gets out of control, the elves decide to invite them into the workshop to dry off and warm up. Inside, they see the elves making toys—baby dolls that say "mama," remote-control cars and trucks that zip and zigzag across the floor, and bicycles being polished to a high shine for Christmas morning. From around a corner, Catbaloo and Old Mrs. Moody watch Santa and Mrs. Claus make candy, and when Santa breaks into song—"Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way…"—they can hardly believe it! In fact, they're here with me to talk all about the Rankin Bass special “Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey!”Nestor was born with abnormally long ears. His owner mistreated him, and the other animals teased him. One night when Roman soldiers came to the stable to buy donkeys, they dismiss Nestor and take all the other donkeys for free. Enraged, Olaf casts Nestor out into the frigid cold. Nestor's mother finds him and shields from the harsh weather with her own body, freezing to death in the process.The next day, Nestor meets a cherub named Tilly, who says that they need to travel to Bethlehem. When they reach the outskirts of the town, Tilly returns to Heaven, instructing Nestor to wait. When Mary and Joseph are expecting Jesus, they take Nestor because of his "gentle eyes", but are caught in a sandstorm. In the midst of the storm, Nestor hears Tilly's voice, but recognizes it as his mother's. She tells him to follow the voices of the angels. Nestor guides Mary and Joseph through the storm, while wrapping Mary in his ears to keep her warm. They arrive in Bethlehem, where Nestor finds the stable where Mary gives birth to Jesus. Nestor heads back home where he is hailed as hero by Olaf and the other animals. Santa? Check. The Holy Family? Yep. Spieltoe? Never thought Santa had a pack mule! What's up, dudes? It's the 40th anniversary of Santa Claus: The Movie! Pax Holley from Cult Film Club, Crestwood House, and I Read Movies is with me to talk all about the novelization!  Santa Claus: The Movie was released in 1985, and it chronicled the origin of the Jill old elf himself. Eventually, it transitions into anDudley Moore vehicle as his elf character Patch takes center stage. Patch feels unappreciated and sets out into the world to prove himself. The novelization fills some plot points the movie left out due to time constraints. For example, the elves used to deliver the gifts themselves, but stopped as it grew harder. Also, in preparation for the big flight, they built a simulator for Santa. The novelization even explains why Santa has to go down chimneys due to modern man's lack of trust in one another. Oh, and Patch returns to the Pole and shares Santa's assistant duties with Puffy.Sleigh flight simulator? Check. Confirmation of Cornelia's adoption? For sure. Of course, in Al fashion, he copies the style to perfection. Harmonically, it's a simple I-vi-ii-V chord progression reminiscent of the 1960s.Lyrically, the song is awash in Cold War nuclear disaster tropes. Yankovic's label, Scotti Brothers Records, insisted that he record a Christmas album. However, after Yankovic presented the song to his label, they relented, because it was "a little different from what they were expecting." After the song was written and recorded, Yankovic wanted to release the song as a commercial single, but Scotti Bros. refused. What's up, dudes? Remember looking in your stocking and finding a cool coloring book of your favorite characters? Charlie Ague from Closer to Christmas and Ague Designs and Alamo City Santa Jeremy Phelps  are here with me to break them down! Luckily, there's a great website Retro Reprintswith hundreds of coloring and activity books to help with our quest. We look through several books by Random House and Golden published in the ‘80s. For example, the Snorks, or as some remember them, underwater Smurfs, engage in holiday activities throughout each page of their book. The Shirt Tales frolic and play amid the yuletide festivities in their own book as well. Spider-Man and the Muppets join the fun in their respective books.As we dig into each book, we examine which pages are easiest to color. We also look at the level of detail poured into the Muppet Babies book, and occasionally how certain pages are boring. Some pages are devoid of characters and feature would-be Christmas presents. What's up, dudes? They're a legendary metal band whose songs were played all the time on MTV. Yes, we're talking Stryper! I've got the incredible Michael Sweet with me to talk about their 1984 singles “Reason for the Season” and “Winter Wonderland!” We also dive into their new album The Greatest Gift of All available this year in November.The boys lay down an eighth note riff in “Reason for the Season,” and modulate for the chorus. The song is full of their dual lead guitar, harmonized in 3rds for texture and interest. After coming to a rocked out climax, it ends with harmonics and acoustic and clean tone electrics. The tight vocal pads give an ethereal feeling contrasting with the previous heavy straightforward rock vibe.Released in December ‘84, the single had a Stryperized version of the classic “Winter Wonderland” as a B-side. This time the band gave the song a swing eighth-triplet riff. After some introductory dialogue, they launch into it, and segue nicely into a triplet dual lead solo. Uniquely, a turnaround transitions to an Elvis inspired bluesy half time rendition of the chorus.And now, this year the band has a new Christmas album! Stryper The Greatest Gift of All is full of classics and original tunes. From a lush and calming “Silent Night” to an uptempo “Joy to the World,” it has it all. The album even ends with re-recordings of their two ‘80s singles, updating them sonically and ending with a bang!Guitar? Check. Soaring vocals? Yep. Full on Stryper vibes? Definitely! When her son Ted brings his new girlfriend Sarah home for Christmas, strange things begin to happen. Of course, Cathy tells her son she's seen Sarah before in her psychic visions.Meanwhile, a glowing blue samurai ghost begins attacking and killing people. The victims include the neighbors, Uncle Pete, and a couple of hunters camping in the woods. What's up, dudes? It's ‘80s Swedish metal, and it's rad! Duane Bailey from Tinsel Tunes and Matt Wheeler from Resurrection Metal Radio join me to talk 220 Volt “Heavy Christmas!”The song is almost thrash metal in delivery, with 16th note riffs alternate picked. Some syncopation adds interest to the main riff. In fact, F# minor pentatonic is embellished with chromaticism to add even more flare to the riff. Then, during the pre-chorus, a descending sixteenth line leads into the vocals, guitars doubling the vox to give it a huge sound.Further, the band re-recorded the song and updated it musically. For example, they added sleighbells to the intro, and quoted some Christmas carols before heading into full on thrash. Also, the guitar solo is more traditional shredding rather than sound effects. Palm muting? Yep. Power chords? Uh huh. Heaviness? Definitely! Ken Ober hosted this season 3 episode.It's the infamous Christmas episode, and the round begins with the magi competing. Of course, wise as they are, they aren't too knowledgeable about classic sitcom television. Consequently, they get all the questions wrong except those about Laverne & Shirley. In round two, a set of real contestants—Joe, Keith, and Kimberly—compete for the prize. Colin Quinn sang twice, and Kari Wuhrer acted out a condensed version of A Christmas Carol.  Ultimately, Kimberly's chair was flipped, leaving Joe against Keith.Eventually Joe triumphed in the Think Real Fast round, but ultimately floundered in the Grand Prize round.
