Story of the Week (DR):The Cracker Barrel BSCracker Barrel scraps new logo design, keeps 'Old Timer' after listening to customersRestaurant chain's stock price sank following removal of 'Uncle Herschel' from brandingUncle Herschel wasn't just a marketing creation, he was a real person. Born Herschel McCartney, he was the younger brother of Cracker Barrel founder Dan Evins' mother and served as an early goodwill ambassador for the brand. A salesman for Martha White Flour Company for over three decades, Herschel traveled through rural America, building relationships in small-town general stores — the very kinds of places that inspired Cracker Barrel's original design and ethos. When Cracker Barrel introduced its iconic logo in 1969, the old-timer sitting beside the barrel was long thought by fans to be based on Herschel himself, though the company later clarified that this wasn't the case.In 2004, the Justice Department (during the George W. Bush administration) sued the chain for discriminating against Black customers. In 2006, they settled a lawsuit involving three of their Illinois restaurants for “discriminatory practices, racially charged language, and inappropriate touching.”Cracker Barrel's inconvenient fact: all the customers who loved its old logo had stopped going to the restaurantFounder Dan EvinsHis tone was considerably harsher when it came to defending a January 1991 directive to all the company's restaurants to fire employees “whose sexual preferences fail to demonstrate normal heterosexual values.” Mr. Evins's explanation for the edict was that gay people made customers in rural areas uncomfortable. As many as 16 openly or suspected gay employees were promptly fired.“They actually put a policy like this in writing, which was, and still is, shocking,” David Smith, a spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign. The New York City Employees Retirement System, which owned more than $6 million of Cracker Barrel shares, led other stock owners in using their votes and other legal means to organize resistance. In March 1991, Mr. Evins apologized and said the policy had been rescinded. But New York and its allies fought until 58 percent of the shareholders in 2002 persuaded Cracker Barrel's board to vote unanimously to explicitly forbid antigay discrimination in its equal employment policy. In July 2001, shareholders replaced Evins as CEO with Michael A. Woodhouse, who at the time was serving as the company's chief operating officer. Evins maintained his position as chairman of the board.Prior to founding the company, Dan worked for Consolidated Oil, a company founded by his grandfather.Cracker Barrel took down Pride page after rebrand fiascoCompany faced criticism over modernist redesign and support for LGBT causes before stock reboundThe website link for Cracker Barrel's Pride page, which used to boast that the company was "bringing the porch to Pride," now redirects to its "Culture and Belonging" page.Cracker Barrel previously sponsored the Nashville Pride Parade in 2024 and unveiled a line of rainbow-colored rocking chairs for Pride month. The company also has an LGBTQ employee resource group called the "LGBTQ+ Alliance," along with groups for veterans and other communities.Despite claims it's 'too woke,' Cracker Barrel actually has a fraught LGBTQ+ historyCracker Barrel received a score of zero on the inaugural index in 2002. The chain was criticized in the 1990s for discrimination against gay employees. In 1991, the company adopted a corporate policy stating that any worker who failed to demonstrate "normal heterosexual values" would be fired. Eleven employees were terminated under the rule, leading to boycotts and protests nationwide. Over time, Cracker Barrel's HRC score improved, reaching 80 in 2021 after the company took several public pro-LGBTQ stances.58 percent of the shareholders in 2002 persuaded Cracker Barrel's board to vote unanimously to explicitly forbid antigay discrimination in its equal employment policy.Proud Representation: Business Resource Groups: These voluntary, employee-led organizations are open to all employees and provide opportunities to network, develop leadership skills, and serve as cross-functional resources for our teams.AMPT (Advancing Modern Professionals for Tomorrow) aims to connect and empower modern professionals by promoting a community of inclusive, ambitious, and diverse members that unify through the Cracker Barrel to equip our community and leaders for the future. August 27, 2025 ~ Matt Friedman, Co-founder of Tanner Friedman Strategic Communications discusses the about face Cracker Barrel made with it's new logo.
H1 - Segment 2 - Wed Aug 27 2025 - Yesterday we got the news that Cracker Barrel has reversed course And welcome back to the program. Glad to have you along with us on this Wednesday afternoon. Let's see here. Alright. So, we'll talk about the school shooting, church shooting, coming up more in just a second. But yesterday, we got the news that Cracker Barrel had reversed course. Now this is what they they came in. They did all of this hullabaloo about changing, you know, the way they look and and changing the logo and all of that stuff. And you guys absolutely I mean, you lost your your heads about it. I don't mean that in a bad way. I mean that in a good way because rightfully you should have because this is this is one of, you know, a lot of people's favorite places. So they're going into they make this unbelievable marketing change, which cost them, like, 7 was it $700,000,000 that they were doing this whole renovation with? Well, you guys let your voice be heard. And then yesterday, they came along and they changed it back. They said, alright. We've heard you. Now first, they put out that ridiculous statement, which basically said, sorry, not sorry. But then I think the shareholders got to got to talking to the CEO, and they were like, okay. We'll go back to the old thing. But here's what really he was one of the bad things that really happened. They started people started looking at Cracker Barrel. Cracker Barrel used to be part of Americana, used to be a great place to go, nostalgia, all of that. You could go and get good food, and you could just you know? And it was a thing. It was just a thing, and everybody just assumed that that was a good thing. But when you start looking into Cracker Barrel and what they actually stand for as a corporation, Well, this is this is one of the worst thing that that could have happened to them because now people started looking into them, saying, hey. Let's check out Cracker Barrel a little bit more and see what's going and did you know they have a thing called porch to pride? You know, all the Cracker Barrels have that front porch. Well, they got a thing called porch to pride. Not only that, they're one of the biggest supporters of the Nashville pride parade and festivities. Saw a video last night of a a drag queen show sponsored by Cracker Barrel. So I a a lot of things a lot of times, things just aren't what they seem. So one of the questions I'm gonna have for you today, Charlie bay Charlie, I read that they basically got a billion dollars worth of free advertising on that stunt. Well, that might just offset what they spent on the remodel. Maybe. Because I know a lot of people out there just aren't going back. And when they find out more about Cracker Barrel and what they really stand for at a corporate level level, I think a lot of people are gonna say, you know what? I'm gonna go somewhere else. I'm gonna find something else. So my question for you today is now that they've decided to keep uncle Herschel leaning on the Cracker Barrel, not only on the road signs, not only on the menus, but also on the store sign itself, is all forgiven. Will you be patronizing them again, or have you learned out more about the corporate, culture of Cracker Barrel? As he Charlie said, I think it's racist. They call it cracker. I know it actually has to do with the barrel. That's the cracker barrel, barrel full of crackers. Charlie not going back, to they they should have let me know about it. There you go. So, Charlie, why does the left always say it's the gun? We'll get to that in just a second. But I do think people need to look more into Cracker Barrel, and especially somebody out there named Robbie Starbuck. Now Robbie Starbuck has been unbelievable at getting corporations to change their DEI, policies, their pride affiliations. Like I said, he's been very successful. He's gotten I mean, he's got a long hit list here. Tractor Supply Company, John Deere, Harley Davidson, Brown F ...
In part one of Red Eye Radio with Gary McNamara and Eric Harley, President Trump's new executive order targeting flag burning drew rare criticism from conservatives and directs the attorney general to prosecute violations of laws involving flag desecration and to pursue litigation that would clarify the scope of the First Amendment. President Trump says he won't take over Chicago and other high-crime cities as he did in Washington DC with audio from Chicago's mayor, audio from Laura Inghram as President Trump opens the door to 600,000 Chinese students allowed into the U.S. to study at colleges amid ongoing trade talks with China and no tariff checks issued (sorry). Also a description of the 1989 ruling on Texas vs. Johnson describing free speech and burning the American flag, the Democrats hold their summer DNC meeting in Minneapolis rife with hate speech and Cracker Barrel releases a statement underscoring their homestyle menu and down-home atmosphere, yet not backing down from thier woke agenda (uncle Herschel we miss you already). This is the fifth and final lecture from the Gresham Festival of Musical Ideas.https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/series/musical-ideas-2025Professors Lintott and Mermikides present and discuss historical and contemporary musical representations of astronomical data including Pythagoras's parallelism of tuning purity and celestial movement, Plato's cosmic harmony in Timaeus, Kepler's representations of orbital eccentricity as musical scales, Herschel's blending of music and cosmology, and the tendency of stable planetary systems to ‘find' harmonic ratios. The contemporary field of astro-sonification – using sound to represent, search and communicate to a diverse audience, astronomical patterns from black hole radiation to exoplanetary systems – is demonstrated with original examples. This lecture was recorded by Milton Mermikides and Chris Lintott on 29th June 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Chris is Gresham Professor of Astronomy.

In 2016, Associate Curator Herschel Hepler came across an image online of a small prayer book that would change what we know about the history of Jewish books and Jewish heritage in Afghanistan. After years of research, this small book turned out to be the oldest Hebrew prayer book known today, dating back to AD 700, which once traveled the Silk Roads and was preserved in the Bamiyan Valley in Afghanistan. In this episode, Osnat Gad, a Jewish jewelry designer who can trace her family heritage back to Afghanistan, and Hepler share how significant this find is and how it changed everything we knew about that region. S6, Ep34 – The Shaquille O'Neal Episode (Not Herschel Walker) This week on Sports Fellowship with Fox and Frank, Dan and Frank are back behind the mic for a lively Shaquille O'Neal-themed 34th episode (sorry, Herschel).
