In 2016, Associate Curator Herschel Hepler came across an image online of a small prayer book that would change what we know about the history of Jewish books and Jewish heritage in Afghanistan. After years of research, this small book turned out to be the oldest Hebrew prayer book known today, dating back to AD 700, which once traveled the Silk Roads and was preserved in the Bamiyan Valley in Afghanistan. In this episode, Osnat Gad, a Jewish jewelry designer who can trace her family heritage back to Afghanistan, and Hepler share how significant this find is and how it changed everything we knew about that region. S6, Ep34 – The Shaquille O'Neal Episode (Not Herschel Walker) This week on Sports Fellowship with Fox and Frank, Dan and Frank are back behind the mic for a lively Shaquille O'Neal-themed 34th episode (sorry, Herschel). The guys dive deep into the NBA Playoffs—celebrating the Knicks' thrilling win over the Pistons, saying goodbye to LeBron and the Lakers, and debating if Boston can stay healthy enough to take it all. Dan tries giving the NBA a second chance while Frank remains cautiously hopeful. They also hit the NHL playoffs, talk Rangers coaching changes, and preview the future of Canadian teams. Over in the NFL world, the guys unpack what they call an “eat your vegetables” draft, discuss George Kittle's extension, and consider Jalen Ramsey's trade rumors. There's movie trivia, tangent confusion (tandem vs. tangent?), and a heartfelt plug for Fox Brothers Alarms. Come for the sports, stay for the laughs—and don't forget to email the show (please… Dan really wants to give away shirts).Special Thanks to:Fox Brothers Alarms - https://foxbrothersalarms.comFirst Baptist church of Phillipsburg NJ http://www.fbcpburg.org/

This week Fika with Vicky is thrilled and chilled to welcome Author Victoria Clapton. Reading “Of Myth and Memento Mori” on a rainy September afternoon, I was transported to Halloween. I could smell autumn as I walked the haunted trails of a pumpkin farm, feel my hands grow warmer as they held a steaming cup of hot chocolate, and see the mist and the secrets it held. Enchanted by these things, and the naturally smooth storytelling, I knew this was a book for Fika, and my Halloween pick for 2024. We'll also be looking into one of Victoria's series “The Binding Universe.” There are many more. You don't have to bring a coffee, Herschel will be happy to serve you any of your Fika favourites at Hiraeth Hollow Halloween. About Victoria - Southern-born Victoria Clapton is no stranger to writing. She completed her first book of poetry at age eight and her first novel at age thirteen. Multilingual, friend to all creatures, Victoria is a forever curious world traveler with a mysterious knowledge of things and places from the past. She's an avid collector of saga books, a practicing vegetarian, and yogini with her feet well balanced in earth's splendor. She and her cat companions enjoy all things Viking, faery, vampire, new writing instruments, herbology and anime. - https://sites.google.com/site/claptonvictoria/ About “Of Myth and Memento Mori” - Beware of the Knockers. They come in the night, searching for the one that wronged them.Lenore waits all year for Halloween to descend on the small Appalachian town of Hiraeth Hollow. A mortician and the town's only professional pumpkin carver, Lenore spends her autumn weekends carving gruesome scenes in gourds while sipping hot beverages at the local Halloween attraction. This year, something has changed. A knocking echoes through the trees, a strange man appears and disappears before Lenore's eyes, and mysterious deliveries arrive on her doorstep. Then, the attacks begin. Soon, Lenore and her friends face a nightmare from folklore; a bedtime story comes to life. Not long ago, in a spiritual direction session, My companion and I spoke about the relinquishing of baggage. Letting baggage go to give space to my future self. Placing that baggage at the feet of Jesus. Placing that baggage on the altar as a sacrifice of a part of myself to God. Like a good and proper Gestalt pupil, I spoke to the future, my future self. It is a self that is not completely known. It is a self, fraught with uncertainty. But it is a self, pregnant with possibilities. Great possibilities, Holy possibilities, Spirit-infused possibilities. I don't remember exactly what I said to my future self. I do remember speaking about my fear of the unknown. A fear so great. I was dragging my feet. Sometimes I wanted to pick up my baggage and return to the place that I knew well.

Are you beset with gloom? Gloomy because someone like me refuses to accept your dehumanizing dream, crushing his nose for an answer? Oh well, still I rise. Maya audacious, defiant backtalk is a sassy refusal to accept the life restricting consequences of the denials, discrimination, and oppression by a dominant center and patriarchal system. Today we hear of a similar sassy refusal to accept a denial of life in our Gospel reading. Here too, we hear backtalk to someone in a position of power, supernatural power, that is, whose denial of life and wholeness is also one of discrimination and exclusivity. The episode is tense, upsetting and complicated. I cannot speak for you, but such is certainly true for myself and in fact, the same appears to be true for the author of the Gospel of Mark who locates a tired and possibly quite aggravated Jesus in the region of Thyre, a Gentile dominated territory. It is hard to imagine Jesus being at ease. He is alone, attempting to go unnoticed in a house in a region in which there is some history of animosity between the Jews and the Gentiles.

This successful American screenwriter of comedies, many of which are remakes or adaptations of novels (i.e., "Brewster's Millions" 1985, "Pure Luck" 1991), had worked in collaboration with Timothy Harris. The Wisconsin-born Herschel A. Weingrod and his British-born partner have generally met with commercial approval for their efforts like "Twins" (1988) and "Kindergarten Cop" (1990), both of which benefited from headliner Arnold Schwarzenegger."Falling Down" (1993), which they co-produced, also became a box-office success, but their only real critical success to date has been "Trading Places" (1983), which paired Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy. He has written and co-written a number of Hollywood blockbusters including Space Jam with fellow writer Timothy Harris.Enjoy my conversation with Herschel Weingrod.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.
This certainly is not unity. Is unity a difficult ask for today? Today America has become more divided than ever. For many, unity is viewed as a threat to peace. to one's personhood or individual identity altogether. Unity requires someone must win and someone must lose. Unity means a loss of freedom. Unity means a loss of merit or a loss of dignity. Unity also means a loss of stability, a loss of security, and a loss of safety. Today, to some, unity is indeed frightening. Unity And yes, unity is indeed frightening because unity requires vulnerability. Unity often takes its victims to unchartered and unknown territories. Unity might lead to becoming friends or falling in love with someone you never dreamed possible. Unity might lead to agreeing with or even having compassion for another person that they have been conditioned to hate. Unity might lead to someone challenging their own worldviews, then to confusion, and then maybe some resolve. I've never heard or read anywhere that unity is easy.
Escuchar audio

So what happened to joke-telling?For one thing, some of the best jokes are about death. The old Republican is dying and tells his wife, “I'm going to switch parties because I'd rather it happen to a Democrat than to one of us.” These are maybe less funny when you get to be my age. For another thing, a politician came along in 2015 who isn't funny. This was a first. There were dozens of George Bush jokes and Bill Clinton jokes but with this guy, late-night comics deliver very clever insults but nobody laughs.I'm not giving up. I was on the phone with a pal who's in chemo and we spent 58 minutes telling jokes back and forth, including the one about the priest asking the widow, “Did your husband have any last request?” and she said, “Yes, he asked me to put down the gun.” The pal laughed so hard she almost split a seam. Later she called me back to tell me one more. Herschel was swept out to sea by a tidal wave and Mama cried out, “God, you can't do that to my boy! Bring him back!” and another wave washes Herschel back and Mama cries, “Thank you, God” and then looks at Herschel and looks up at the sky — “He was wearing a hat!” I've heard that joke many times and I'm starting to get it. A guy needs a hat. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit garrisonkeillor.substack.com/subscribe
Brothers Jamie and Lyndon Cormack founded Herschel Supply Co to sell modern bags with a timeless feel. While working in the sports and apparel industry, they realized they couldn't find backpacks and totes with the same stylish but simplified vibe as their favorite sneakers and shirts. With no background in manufacturing, they learned to make bags partly by ripping old ones apart. Then they Googled their way to finding a factory and scrambled to catch up as orders started to roll in. Since launching in 2009, Jamie and Lyndon have grown Herschel Supply Co. from a handful of samples at a trade show in New York, to a global travel goods brand whose backpacks, luggage, and clothing are sold in more than 9,000 locations. This episode was produced by Chris Maccini, with music by Ramtin Arablouei.Edited by Neva Grant, with research from Alex Cheng. Our engineers were Gilly Moon and Josh Newell. You can follow HIBT on Twitter & Instagram, and email us at hibt@id.wondery.com.This episode is brought to you in part by Canva, the easy-to-use online design platform for presentations, social posts, videos, websites, and more.
