Welcome to Episode #131 of the Blue-in-Green:PODCAST which this week sees Imran connect with London-based guitarist and composer, Mike De Souza. Having just released his second full-length project at the end of 2023, 'Chrysalis' further held the distinction of having found a home on the revered Spanish label, Fresh Sound Records. Despite being a project that initially found its life during the quarantine period, 'Chrysalis' became an album about hope through adversity and a stunning piece of work to add to De Souza's burgeoning catalogue. With two albums and an EP ('Road Fork', 2018) now under his belt, De Souza continues to cement his name as a solo artist in his own right in addition to his already stunning résumé which includes a slew of releases via collaborative projects, session work and global touring duties. Perhaps best known for the genre-defying Big Bad Wolf project which generated the fantastic 'Pond Life' album in 2017 and was subsequently followed by a selection of standalone singles, De Souza can further boast collaborations with Twospeak, Alex Paxton, Simon Read and Phil Meadows as well as having secured touring duties alongside the revered US trumpeter Terrence Blanchard. We were grateful to catch-up with Mike to discuss the new album, his early connections to music and the guitar, the creative process and Big Bad Wolf. We'd love to extend a gratious thank you to Mike for his time and for gifting us with a really fascinating conversation. Host Tamara Khandaker is back and she’s talking to Global News reporter Mike De Souza, one of the journalists who’s spent the past year working on this investigation. How much lead is in our water? How is it only now becoming clear how serious a problem this is? And how do we go about fixing it?

The 2019 election campaign is under way. The parties have made major policy announcements. But so far, much of the commentary has focused on political bombshells. When we don’t talk policy as much as we should, that’s a shame. First, because the announcements leaders make are good markers of their party’s election strategy. But more than that, because whoever forms government is going to be making good on a number of these election promises. And a healthy policy debate is crucial for citizens looking to make informed political choices. That’s why, over the next several weeks, we’ll be highlighting the policy issues on the campaign trail by covering the three panel discussions in Policy Options’ new Election 2019 Breakfast Series. The events are being held in Ottawa in partnership with the Max Bell School of Public Policy and sponsored by the CBC. This panel explores emerging policy themes. It features Mike De Souza, Tasha Kheiriddin, and Jennifer Robson, and is moderated by Jennifer Ditchburn. We discuss some Canadian news items with some direct correlation to the 2016 Federal Budget including more amazing work by Mike De Souza and the National Observer looking into the dysfunction of the National Energy Board with regards to energy projects in Canada. In the second section, the long lost and sorely missed Kevin Farmer jumps in to the mix, and Stefan Hostetter both take Emmay Mah's lead discussing the just announced 2016 Federal Canadian Budget. In the final live section, Kevin Farmer (one of the original co-hosts, since retired for new listeners) takes control and gives one of his trademark, funny, poignant and razor sharp rants... mostly poking holes in Justin Trudeau's new oil filled climate policy. In the bonus show, Sabina is off this week so Stefan steps in to host. We decided at the last min that we'd said more or less everything we wanted to say (that was important) about the other news and the budget, so we take a slight pause in our regular programming to discuss some of the other very topical non-environment news this week that is top-of-mind for many Canadian's right now. Due to tackling 3 big news stories, we run super over time close to 25 min so I hope you can power through because along with everyone else, Stefan really makes some great points at the end of the show. The topics are: the Brussels attack, #BlackLivesMatter protests in Toronto, and the Jian Ghomeshi trial. This is just a brief!
