Internet scholar and activist Ethan Zuckerman is horrified by the American ban on TikTok. As a self-described “progressive” with a long and distinguished career advocating for internet freedom, Zuckerman expresses alarm at how the U.S. has moved from defending unfettered access to information in the 1960s to now being willing to ban popular Chinese platforms like TikTok and perhaps even DeepSeek. He suggests the ban stems from the anti-China hysteria and exaggerated fears about social media's impact on young people fueled by paranoid critics like Jonathan Haidt. If this trend toward online censorship continues, Zuckerman warns, America will become indistinguishable from other authoritarian states in its disdain for digital freedom. Here are the 5 KEEN ON takeaways from the interview with Zuckerman:* The TikTok ban represents a dramatic shift in American values - Zuckerman points out that the US has moved from defending unfettered access to information (even Communist propaganda) in 1965 to now being willing to ban popular platforms. He sees this as contradicting core First Amendment principles.* Anti-China sentiment and social media fears are driving policy - The push to ban TikTok stems from a combination of paranoia about Chinese influence and exaggerated concerns about social media's effects on youth. Zuckerman argues there's little evidence supporting claims of Chinese manipulation or widespread social media harm.* Young people view the TikTok ban as evidence of institutional disconnect - Students see the ban as proof that lawmakers don't understand modern technology or youth culture. Their response of moving to other Chinese platforms demonstrates their cynicism toward government actions.* Social media platforms have become too powerful to easily abandon - Despite disagreeing with the politics of platforms like Facebook and X, users remain because of network effects. Zuckerman himself confesses to still using these platforms to maintain connections, even while advocating for alternatives.* "Middleware" could offer a solution - Rather than banning platforms or creating new ones, Zuckerman (like Frank Fukuyama) advocates for tools that let users modify how they interact with existing platforms. However, he warns, major platforms like Meta actively resist these efforts through legal threats and technical barriers.Ethan Zuckerman is an associate professor of public policy, communication, and information, as well as director of the UMass Initiative for Digital Public Infrastructure, focused on reimagining the Internet as a tool for civic engagement. His research focuses on civic media, online community governance, digital public infrastructure, quantitative studies of media attention, technology, and social change. Before coming to UMass, Zuckerman was at MIT, where he served as director of the Center for Civic Media and as associate professor of practice in media arts and sciences at the MIT Media Lab. His research focuses on the use of media as a tool for social change, the role of technology in international development, and the use of new media technologies by activists. The author of Rewire: Digital Cosmopolitans in the Age of Connection, he will publish a new book, Mistrust: Why Losing Faith in Institutions Provides the Tools to Transform Them (W.W. Norton), in early 2021. In 2005, Zuckerman cofounded Global Voices, which showcases news and opinions from citizen media in more than 150 nations and 30 languages. Through Global Voices, and as a researcher and fellow for eight years at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, Zuckerman has led efforts to promote freedom of expression and fight censorship in online spaces. In 1999, Zuckerman founded Geekcorps, an international, nonprofit, volunteer organization that sent IT specialists to work on projects in developing nations, with a focus on West Africa. Previously, he helped found Tripod.com, one of the web's first "personal publishing" sites. In addition to authoring numerous academic articles, Zuckerman is a frequent contributor to media outlets such as The Atlantic, Wired, and CNN. He received his bachelor's degree from Williams College and, as a Fulbright scholar, studied at the University of Ghana at Legon.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting the daily KEEN ON show, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy interview series. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Today Laura and Kevin chat with Matt Strippelhoff, the leader behind Red Hawk, to explore the evolving world of software development and the role innovation plays in shaping the industry. Matt shares his excitement about current trends in software development and explains how these advancements are influencing Red Hawk's approach to building applications. Matt explains how Red Hawk leverages AI tools like code copilots to streamline the development process, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining a "human in the loop" approach. He also addresses the concerns surrounding AI replacing jobs, asserting that AI should enhance, not diminish, the role of development teams. However, he stresses that companies should only invest in AI if they can clearly articulate its value to their business. The discussion takes a lively turn as the group delves into the topic of AI chatbot companions. Laura sparks a spirited debate by asking whether chatting with an AI bot could be considered cheating. Kevin and Matt argue that it is, while Laura counters with a humorous take, adding that falling in love with an AI companion might make someone a “loser.” The conversation also touches on the challenges of using AI in recruitment, with Laura recounting a bizarre hiring experience involving a candidate who turned out to be a group of people. Matt offers valuable advice for non-technical founders looking to build software companies, outlining common mistakes they make and providing practical tips to avoid them. He also looks ahead to Red Hawk's future, discussing the company's innovative model of bundling software development and engineering into managed services. Matt also shares stories from his 15 years with his rock band, Grace in Gravity, including the time they opened for Sarah McLachlan. Laura playfully suggests starting a new band called “The Tripods,” but Matt remains focused on his commitment to Red Hawk, which he describes as his all-in plan with no backup. Niece: The GGK Girls take more interest in Jakeby musicankane - listen to the Podcast at Steamy Stories. After Alexis left, Jake lay in bed for a while staring up at the ceiling and thought about his sudden womanly success. It was so sudden and out of nowhere that he couldn't believe that it had really happened. Though the wet spot between his legs proved that it was. However Jake couldn't help feel like something was off. This kind of thing didn't happen to him, he was a nerd, a geek, a Dungeons and Dragons dungeon master, girls didn't just approach him the way Alexis did. And he certainly didn't have the courage to approach them. While he was thankful to finally have gotten rid of his V-card, the whole thing smelt fishy. Finally he sat up in the bed and shifted over to the restroom to clean himself with a towel and wash his face. Alexis had mentioned GGK, one of the craziest sororities on campus. GGK was the place every girl wanted to be a part of, and every guy wanted to party at. But it was exclusive, in a sense. GGK had a reputation for only accepting the hottest of the hot when it came to their sisterhood. Alexis would certainly fit that bill in Jake's opinion, but with GGK's standards who knew. Then something occurred to him. Alexis had wanted a picture of his....package, she had played it off as a sexy little fun thing, but she also was very deliberate about the picture she took. Most frats liked to haze their new pledges; it was officially banned on campus but that didn't stop anyone. It was one of those rule that the college had to have written on paper to look good, but nobody ever actually enforced it as far as Jake had ever heard. If a girl like Alexis was trying to get into GGK, then what kind of hazing would a frat of incredibly hot girls make a new pledge do?Maybe get a dick pic from a dork. Something to hold over the new girl as leverage. Something to use later to embarrass her should she step out of line down the road?Jake felt a pit in his stomach, he had been used. He had to have been. But if that had been the case, then why would Alexis come back to pop his cherry? Unless the picture she took wasn't good enough and they demanded more form her. But she hadn't taken any pictures, at least any that he was aware of, while they were doing the dirty. So that part didn't add up.Rather than debate on it in his head, Jake decided to try and get answered from GGK itself. Jake quickly got dressed and made his way over to the GGK house which was quite a walk from his dorm. Alexis had invited him to a party tomorrow, but even from down the block Jake could hear music thumping from the direction of the frat house. GGK was a party every day of the week if they could get away with it.Well at least he wouldn't be waking anyone up. He wondered if Alexis was already there, or if she wasn't allowed entry until she was officially a member.Jake stood out front for a minute, just looking at the house, the music loud enough now to nearly deafen him from his own thoughts. Inside he could see the shapes of people dancing, or mingling together. What was he doing here? Really? Who would he even ask about Alexis, and would they even give him any kind of answer? Hell there was a strong possibility that whomever answered the door would simply laugh in his face and shut the door on him."Are you hazing Alexis? Did you make her fuck me to become a pledge?" Jake rattled the questions through his head. "Why? Why me?" Though the answer to that was that he was an obvious target, and putting a new pledge on him would be very embarrassing. Especially if Alexis already had a boyfriend. Embarrass her, her boyfriend, and make her a cheater on top of all of it. It would be enough dirt to hold over anyone's head. It also sounded really fucked up.Jake thought about walking away and forgetting it. What did it matter to him anyway? He would never have a chance with someone as stunningly hot as Alexis normally, and if they had picked him to be her target then, well good for him he figured. He turned away from the door, but in the same motion spun right back around and returned to facing the house. No it wasn't right. Right? He didn't realize he had walked up to the door, until he was already reaching for the bell. His finger hesitated right over the button for a moment, before he sighed and pressed it. Whether or not the bell worked he couldn't tell. The music was so loud that anyone hearing the ring would be a miracle, let alone figuring out it was the doorbell.Yet despite that, it didn't take more than thirty seconds before someone opened the door.Jake blinked at the woman who trust open the door. She was tall, at least an inch or two taller than him even, with long flowing raven black hair and icy blue eyes. Her figure was basically insanity, slim, fit, tight, long legs, flat flawless stomach, and full firm honeydew sized breasts. She was stunning, as per GGK law, and even could put Alexis to shame."Who the fuck?" She started, holding a red solo cup. At first her face was nothing but annoyance, how dare someone uninvited disturb her party. But her face quickly changed as she got a good look at him. Her gaze ran over Jake up and down which made him turn a little red, the way her face shifted into a smirk and her eyes seemed fill with mischief told him that Alexis had taken the picture to the sorority. He had never felt so embarrassed, or ashamed. The woman's tone changed as well, "Oh well look at what we have here. Mr. Baseball Bat." She said in a teasing tone. Her stance shifted as she moved her weight to lean against the open door frame. "What brings you here, Tripod?" She asked still with a hint of teasing mischief.Jake opened his mouth and closed it, trying to think of the right thing to say. "I...uh....is Alexis here?" He asked, wincing in his head for not being able to come out and ask what he really wanted to ask. Though this was a good first step. Who was Mr. Baseball Bat?The woman glanced back to the party going on loudly behind her. Then back to him, "Sorry no. She's not official yet and only full members and invitees allowed tonight. We are having an opening night party tomorrow and she'll be here then though."Jake nodded, "Yeah I heard about that." He muttered. "Okay um...so she isn't an official member then, but she's trying to be?"The woman smirked again and gave him a look. "I think you and I both know that answer don't we? Why don't you man up and tell me why you're here Jake."That surprised him, she knew his name though he was fairly certain....actually he was one-hundred percent positive he had never spoken to this girl before. Though perhaps she knew him from a class and he never noticed, though looking at her now he didn't think she could be anywhere near him and not have him notice her. But there was a chance if she passes him while in the middle of school work or preparing a D&D game."What do you mean?" He asked her.She rolled her eyes and stepped out of the door towards him. "You're here to see if Alexis was just fucking with you right? To see if she was using you like a little....err maybe not so little guinea pig." She place a finger on his chest. "The answer to that is, yes, we've all seen you." She pushed herself close to him, so close that her scent invaded into his nose and clouded his mind. She smelt of vanilla and a little bit of Jack Daniels, and the combination gave him a heady rush. Then she stepped back to the door and crossed her arms as she leaned back against the frame. "The question is, what do you plan to do about it?" She asked."NIECE!" Came another girl's voice from inside. A bubbly brunette bobbed into view from around the tall woman. "Hey what are you.....?" She started asked, but stopped short when she saw Jake standing there looking like a confused little lamb. "Oh....is this?"Niece nodded, "That's him. Who would have ever guessed huh?"The other girl smiled at Jake up and down, licking her lips as she did so. Then she tapped frantically on Niece's arm. "Oh let's invite him in! I want to play with him."Niece raised an eyebrow, not to the other girl but to Jake. "You hear that? You've become quite popular, and there are so many willing to play." Her smile almost became evil. "We can teach you a much better game than that Dragons and Douchebags you like."The other girl darted forward and grabbed Jake's arm. "Oh come on big boy, let's have fun!" She insisted.Jake only stared at Niece, "What world did I walk into?"Niece shrugged and stepped aside of the door. "Only one way to find out isn't there?" She gestured invitingly towards the door to him.A pit of dread seemed to build within him, like the devil was invited him into a house of sin. Not that he thought that sex or anything like that was sinful, the way this was playing out had a forbidden flavor that he couldn't shake. And as the other girl tugged at his arm, pulling him towards the door, it was also something he couldn't resist. As he passed the threshold to the GGK house. The smell of a million hot girl perfumes, and truckloads of booze filled his nose. It smelt like what he imagined a strip club would smell like. They had dim lighting all over the house, with colored strobes of purple, pink, red, and blue flashing over the walls. The music beat at him like a drum, pounding into his head until he was damn near senseless. The brunette holding his arm let him go and slapped his chest, "I'm gonna get you a drink." She announced loudly and bounced away before Jake could tell her he didn't drink."What do you think?" Niece asked.Jake glanced at her, "It's....a lot." He admitted. "Not something I'm exactly used to." He turned to her and asked, "Look I just came to ask if you guys are the reason behind Alexis' sudden.....interest in a geek like me."Niece polished off whatever she had in her solo cup and set it on a random table nearby. "Look, Jake it's the way of things here. We put all new recruits through initiation to prove they want to be here. Sometimes that means making them do something with a random selected person." She told him simply. "But the ‘something', is a task which usually is a delight for the guy, and you looked pretty happy to be in that picture if your rigid dick is anything to go by." She grinned.Jake blinked in disbelief, "You made Alexis have sex with me just to join the sorority?" He asked.Niece frowned. "Sex?" She shook her head, "No, just a dick pic." She paused with a grin, "Wait did she sleep with you?" She asked excitedly.Jake blinked at her with a confused look. The silent pause took too long. That was all Niece needed, "Oh!" She laughed in delight. "Well, how was it, big boy? Could she walk away afterward?"Before Jake could blushingly reply, the other girl rushed up with a cup filled with some sort of bubbling brown beer. "Here you go big man." She said happily."Galina, you're not going to believe it." Niece said, "Alexis actually fucked him."Galina brightened noticeably, which was a feat considering her already bubbly happy demeanor. "No way, really!?" She exclaimed turning back to Jake. "How was it? Did you have fun? What's she like in bed?" How sore was she, afterward? She asked in rapid succession.Jake looked between the two, Jake is an intelligent man, but social wits around beautiful women still lacked in his skill-set; "I uh, I don't really know."Niece gave him an incredulous look, "You don't know if it was good?"Jake shook his head, "No....err...I mean yeah it was awesome but, I only ever did it the one time so I...""Wait!" Niece roared, stepping closer to him, "You were a virgin? She ‘deflowered' you?"Jake scoffed, glancing around wildly, what had he gotten himself into? He needed to escape and quickly, this was going exceptionally poorly and nothing at all like he had planned. And he feared that if he said anymore not only would he embarrass himself further but he might also screw Alexis out of her position in Gamma Gamma Kappa....or worse yet make her hate him. He didn't want that, despite the truth now being out that she only spoke with him in the first place because of GGK, he had also learned that she hadn't been pressured into the sex. Which meant Alexis did like him. At least somewhat....it was strange."Holy shit he was!" Niece said teasingly, elbowing Galina. "I can't believe that, with a package like what he's hiding I don't understand how that's possible." She paused, "Oh wait never mind, I know why."Galina moved up against Jake's side and leaning into him, "If I had known you were such a big boy, I would have taken care of you Freshman year." She told him with a promise.Jake frowned and wiggled out of her grip. "Yeah that's great to know. Look I just came here to find out the truth and I did, I guess, so thank you for that and I'm going to head back now." He pushed the solo cup Galina has given him back into her hands and backed away.Niece moved over to the door and blocked it from him. "Now, now wait a minute." She told him. "Alexis didn't tell you about her final trial did she?"Jake took a breath, "What final trial? I didn't even know about the first one.""Well Alexis is supposed to bring you to a party tomorrow, did she tell you about that?"He nodded, "Well she invited me yeah.""Did she tell you that she has to bring you here and have a little contest with me?" She asked and shook her head, "Of course she didn't. You see she and I are going to have a little race tomorrow night, which one of us can get you upstairs to fuck like wild animals first. Isn't that awesome?"Jake was dumbfounded, "Why would that be awesome? Wait you guys are going to pass me around like a....""Sex toy, yes." Niece finished.Jake frowned."Oh what's the problem?" She asked, moving her hands to her hips, "You haven't gotten lucky with girls like us before right? Now's your chance big man." She raised her hands, lifting her crop top up enough to reveal her toned stomach. "You don't wanna fuck me?" She asked teasingly. Letting her shirt go, she leaned forward towards him, squeezing her arms together causing her breasts to heave and show him as much cleavage as she possible could. "I'll take you up to my room right now, and you can do whatever you want to me."Jake was at a loss, unsure if this was real or if he had fallen asleep back in his room and he was just dreaming this. "I don't even know you." He stammered."Oh I'm Niece, I'm the sorority head (giving) chairman, and this here is Galina who you can have too if you want." Niece straightened up and gestured back towards the other girl, who licked her lips heavily when Jake glanced back. The look sent shivers down his spine. He turned back to Niece, "Look I don't know about any of this, I'm not the kind of guy who does this. I wasn't the kind of guy that didn't anything even close to this up until tonight." He explained. It was like he had gone from a nobody to Hugh Heffner in a matter of twenty four hours. Two days ago he was a nerdy virgin with no female prospects, to tonight in which he had his pick of several. Not just average or even nerdy girls either, but top shelf model caliber women. It was a sexual overload. He had thought his luck with Alexis had been enough, but her little GGK assignment had cracked open an entire realm to him. There woman all seemed to have nicknames for him to, "Big Man", "Mr. Baseball Bat". Now that he thought about it, and put it together with the picture and....wait a second. They only were after him because of his dick! The realization hit him like a shovel to the face. "Oh!" He gasped. Looking back and forth between the girls. "You just want to see my dick don't you?"Niece laughed and Galina giggled, "See it? I don't want to just see it. I want to FUCK it." She insisted."I'd settle for seeing it though." Galina said, "I'd rather do more, but I'll take what I can get."Jake shook his head. "I can't believe this is happening." He was clearly overwhelmed."And I can't believe you've got a firehose in your pants. The world is a crazy place Jake." Niece explained. "Look buddy let me spell this out for you since we've clearly broken your fucking mind. You were honestly just going to be a joke we could use to hold over Alexis' head whenever we felt like hazing the new bitch. Turn out fate is fucking with us and the random dude we picked for her, ended up having a dick that would make most porn stars jealous. So now, the GGK sluts are very interested in fucking with you."She stopped for a moment and stepped towards him, putting a hand on his cheek. "You want my advice? Just roll with it and enjoy, because this only happens to one in a million guys. You hit the lottery bucko, roll with it." She told him.Well this girl clearly knew what she was doing and she made very smart points. Things like this only happened to guys like him in pornos, or fantasies. Jake was conflicted though. What if Alexis really liked him for whatever reason? Niece had said herself that they had never told her to sleep with him. So Alexis had done that of her own volition. Then again maybe she was of the same mindset of these girls here. Niece and the bubbly brunette Galina didn't know shit about him and they didn't seem to care. All they knew was that he apparently had a rather substantially impressive "baseball bat". That alone had them wanting to give him a try. And if they wanted to just give him a try, then why wouldn't Alexis have been of the same mindset? She just had been in a position to take advantage of him in the moment. She had made him believe she wanted him.Jake's head hurt, and he looked around. Niece was stunning, Galina was just as stunning. Galina herself was shorter, but her body was just as incredible. Jake had gone from no possible female attention, to being overwhelmed with potential. Not just womanly attention, but attention from practical goddesses. These GGK girls were like a coalition of the hottest girls from around the country.Galina shifted around to stand next to Niece. "I think you broke him."Niece gave a concerned look, "Poor guy has never had options before, he doesn't know what to do with himself."Jake grimaced, she wasn't wrong. As tempted as he might be he couldn't, he didn't want his first possible relationship with someone to end because he couldn't go ten hours without sticking his dick into the next thing that offered. He sighed and hung his head apologetically. "Yeah I can't do this. I don't know what the deal is with Alexis and maybe it's nothing, but if it isn't I don't wanna be that guy who fucks it up in the first damn day."Niece looked him over thoughtfully and clicked her tongue. "Noble." She said, "Alright if you change your mind, you know where to find me.""Us." Galina corrected with a smirk.Niece opened the front door again and motioned Jake was free to go. As he walked by her she reached out and grabbed his arm to stop him for a moment. "I did mean it when I said you could do whatever you wanted to me. Even creampie me if you wanted." She told him with a heated, lusty voice. "Just think about that."Jake felt trembles of lust rush through him. He didn't trust himself to say anything so he merely nodded and walked away.By the time he got back to his room he was exhausted. That conversation had not gone the way he had expected, and it took a lot out of him mentally. He staggered into his room and kicked the door shut before collapsing upon his bed.The next morning Alexis woke up in her temporary room with a pleasant soreness between her legs. That night with Jake had indeed been wonderful and unlike anything she had ever experienced before. She rolled out of her bed and staggered to the bathroom, surprised at how weak her legs felt. Jake was indeed huge and he pushed her body to the limit without knowing it. It had given her a heady rush that she wanted more of, and this was the first time after sleeping with any guy that she had a hard time walking the next morning. She began to giggle to herself as she checked herself out in the bathroom. Her loins ached and yet she burned for more. As she brushed her teeth she remembered her new pills that where in her toiletry bag, quickly she took one and took the pill box out of the temp bag and moved it to her school bag so that she would always have it nearby. She wanted more of Jake in a way she hadn't wanted more of any guy before him, maybe it was just lust, but there was something to him that she liked though she couldn't quite put her finger on it.Didn't matter, tonight was a shoe it. Everything was going to work out in her favor. She was suddenly thankful that GGK had led her to Jake, in an initiation that would have normally been gross and disgusting, things turned out to be actually really great. Now she had Jake and all she had to do was fuck him again at the party tonight and she would not only have the guy with the literal biggest dick on campus, but she would also be a shoe-in for GGK membership. It couldn't be more per
Welcome back! One of our favorite style of shows to make is our "questions and answers" episodes where we answer questions that our viewers and listeners have sent in to us or questions that we hear repeatedly on phone conversations with our customers at Outdoor Legacy. We like addressing these things publicly to hopefully help our viewers that make have some of the same questions of their own. This week we talk about everything from daytime thermal use, tripods and rifle calibers. If you have questions you'd like to hear us talk about, please leave them in the comments and we'll try to include them on our next Q&A episode.
HT2107 - The Second Reason to Use a Tripod When asked, I bet most photographers would say they use a tripod to stabilize the camera for sharper pictures. That's true, but that's just the first reason to use a tripod. I find using a tripod helps with more precise framing which ultimately requires less fussing in processing. To help with precise framing, I use a geared head on my tripod.
Send us a textAnother slice of Tom Cruise Sci-Fi goodness comes under the scrutiny of our all seeing eyes this week, as we review Steven Spielberg's 2005 H.G Wells baiting War of the Worlds movie.Steff flexes his authority here as he's read the book, heard the album, lived the live experience and got the t-shirt to prove it.Although as you'd expect, Hutch has much to contribute to the discussion too. You can go back and listen to the full interview in our catalog when you're ready.Brad Crowell 1:38 Let's dig in the first episode that we're gonna talk about today, that we're bringing back is episode number 25.Lesley Logan 1:45 Twenty-five.Brad Crowell 1:45 Twenty-five all the way back towards the very beginning.Lesley Logan 1:49 It's like 2022.Brad Crowell 1:51 We had a chance to interview Uma Naralkar, who talks a lot about food and nutrition, and we have two sections of this that we thought were really spectacular. So.Lesley Logan 2:07 Yeah, so first up, I really, I thought it was really cool and vulnerable that she talked about when she moved to the US and what the food was like, and how that challenged her and got her interested in what she has become known for, and being a nutritionist and things like that. So I'm really excited for us to hear her story of moving to the US.Brad Crowell 2:27 Yeah, so, and also she talked about this, her process of how she works with her clients, and she created something called the Tripod of Optimal Health. And I'm not going to tell you what it is, because you're going to hear it just after this. So tune in.Uma Naralkar 2:41 The biggest difference for me was the food, right? So in India, we have a lot of health. Inherently, there's health and cooks and food is never something that I had to even think about. So that's the reason why it was always so well -balanced and healthy, because it was like home-cooked Indian food and all the beautiful dals and vegetables, and it was primarily vegetarian. We ate meat on the weekends as like a treat. Dessert would always be homemade, something made in ghee, like, very, very like, decently portioned. And I came to America where everything was supersized, right? And I was a student. And, I mean, I was, first, it was shocking, then it was exciting, and then it was kind of like, I didn't have a choice. I was hungry, and I had to eat, and I was a student, so it was like, McDonald's and all the other and it was truly exciting, I have to say, in the beginning, because I was like, what is going on? Why are these people eating so much? But it was a huge adjustment. And you know, when you're asking me about how I, you know, the thing that I had to kind of like, get over and just be like, I'm going to embody this. I am. You know, the book Atomic Habits. Have you read that?Lesley Logan 4:01 Yes. Uma Naralkar 4:01 James Clear. He talks about shifting your identity to who you want to be. Do you remember that part of the book? What he's saying is that if you, you know you, if you want something, if you truly believe that you want something, you need to believe that you have it, and you need to shift your identity in the sense that you know I am a confident 20 year old girl in the United States, where I don't know shit about this country and I truly don't understand, have the words that they use. And at 20, was I clear about what I'm saying now? No, not at all, because it was nerve-racking. And the reason why I'm bringing it up is because the biggest obstacle, apart from the food, my biggest challenge, was speaking, or just speaking out in class, or just raising my hand, or just standing in front of an audience and saying, like anything, it was something that I didn't grow up with. In India, you never get an opportunity to speak anything. Everything is crowded and they don't have time for anybody speaking. So I think it was a true challenge, and it sounds so, it doesn't sound like a big deal because my children, both of them, grew up here. They're Californians, and, you know, I can see how speaking is so inherent, right? Like you're in a group setting, or if you're in a big crowd, just saying what you feel is pretty standard. First off, yes, to therapy. I think all kinds of therapy is, I appreciate all of it. And I think people, it's still, it's very interesting. Still, people have a lot of resistance to see a therapist or to, you know, just to open up and talk to someone else about what's going on. So yes, to therapy, but more than that, yeah, nutrition, what you're eating, is going to be foundational movement and how active you are and what you're doing there, as well as your stress levels, your sleep, all that, I think ties in. It is pretty holistic. I don't think it's one or the other. And I have a lot of really fit clients who are like, I mean, as fit as they can be, who are miserable, who are so unhappy, who are, who are they like, constantly looking for ways to, you know, get to the next level. And, quite frankly, they don't even know what the next level is. So I think it's, everyone's very different. And for one person, maybe it's like, you know, your nutrition is seriously lacking, and we need to make some switches so that you start, like, having a better relationship with food. But for someone else, it might just be something as simple as, you know, like doing yoga or getting out in nature, someone who's like, stuck in front of their computer all day and doesn't even like, realize it like, for example, like the best, I think the best example I can give is like being in a casino, right? Like, in inside a casino, like, how clever is that? It's like the lights are always the same, it's always bright, it's always entertaining. There's enough blue light to kick the melatonin out, so you're always in that cortisol rush. They want that because they want you to play. But that's how we are pretty, pretty much living our life like, like we're in a casino, right? Because we're indoors, we are in front of the computer, then we are watching something, and then we expect to have a good night's sleep. So I feel like it's, it's just, it all ties in, and it's not one thing I call it, I call it the Tripod, actually, of Optimal Health, which is what you're eating, what your movement, your life activity, your lifestyle, and then your mental health, your mindset, right? They all tie in. And then your health is sort of like sitting on that tripod. So if one of those legs is like wobbly, then the whole thing is going to collapse.Lesley Logan 7:59 So that was Episode 25 and we would love to know, we would love for you to share with us what part of the Tripod of Health that you're going to work on as we come into 2025 and no, it won't be a New Year's resolution. It will just be a thing that you're doing. Now we have Episode 55, so we're going way back in the catalog today's episode, and it's how are hormones dictating your life? And one of the things. Brad Crowell 8:21 With? Lesley Logan 8:21 With Jenn Pike. Brad Crowell 8:22 With Jenn Pike. Lesley Logan 8:23 Yeah, one of the things that we talk about that I'm really excited for you to talk, like, here is that the four different phases in your cycle, and this is really, really important, because I have a lot of people ask me a lot of questions about perimenopause. I want more episodes on this. But if you are not perimenopausal yet, or maybe you still have your cycle, but you're kind of, you know, that's what perimenopause is. You got to know what parts of the cycle you're in, because it affects how you work out. It affects what you should be eating. I had, there's some dream guests on my list that I want to have in future episodes, but we need to know these parts for those guests to make any sense. So like, dive into that first part with the different phases of your cycle, even if you think you know them.Brad Crowell 9:00 Yeah, the second part of this episode, though, I thought was really beneficial, was talking about educating both men and women on this. So I remember listening to this the first time, you know, a couple years ago, and I was taking notes because I knew none of this. I don't know how (inaudible)Lesley Logan 9:17 And you have a mom and a sister.Brad Crowell 9:18 And I went through high school and college, and never learned any of this stuff. Lesley Logan 9:22 And you had a wife before me. Brad Crowell 9:23 And I did have a wife before you, still didn't know any of this stuff. So, so the, she, Jenn talks about stigmatism, shame and embarrassment and the value of educating her son. I think she has sons. I can't remember. Son. She's one son. She's talking about how he knows just as much about the female body as her daughter and the value like, they, as a couple, decided to educate their son on purpose to avoid stigmatism and shame and embarrassment. So I thought that was really great.Lesley Logan 9:57 I love it. I love her. I love her for that already.Brad Crowell 10:00 Yeah. It's a win. There you go.Jenn Pike 10:03 So we go through four different phases in our cycle. So our cycle and our period are not the same thing. Your cycle is from day one of your bleed all the way through until you have your next bleed. That's a full cycle. Most women, it's going to range anywhere from 23 to 35 days. And in that cycle you have four different phases. So you have the phase that you bleed in, which is your actual period, when you come out of your period, you actually have what's referred to as the first phase, which is the follicular phase. And this is where your body, your hormones and estrogen and testosterone are starting to climb. Your uterine lining is starting to thicken again. This is typically where we actually feel more connected to our body. We do well with the estrogen surge. We feel clear, more focused, energized, happier. We're like gung-ho. We want to create new projects. We're super, you know, on point. Leading into ovulation, ovulation comes, it tends to be much more of a you know, I want to put myself out there. Confidence can peak a little higher, sex drive, typically. And the way I'm painting this picture, this isn't going to be for every woman. I'm just going to kind of give one example, and then I'll apex it on the other side. Once ovulation happens, you've now had this dip in estrogen and testosterone, and your luteinizing hormones increase as long as you've ovulated, your progesterone also increases. And that actually is a much more calming hormone. It helps us to integrate. It brings us into a place that is much more reflective, in that luteal phase, which are the couple weeks coming into your period. It's a time to really look at like what is working and what is not. It's time to finish projects. It's a time when you can feel really connected to your body, and then this is one of the times where you'll also know if things are out of balance, if that like seven to 10 day period of time before you bleed again, your mood's all over the place, you're emotional, your sleep is off, your gut is off, you're spotting. Your breasts are tender, like you're just like, oh my God, here we go again. My skin's breaking out. All the things are happening. That's a really strong indication that something is out of balance in your system. And it could be that you didn't ovulate, that you have lower progesterone, you have too much estrogen, it could be that all the hormones are sitting flat. It could be that testosterone and DHA is too high. So this is why testing and testing at the appropriate time of the month is such a valuable tool for women, because when you see it and someone's explaining it to you you're like, oh my gosh, I feel like you just described me to a tee. Yeah.Lesley Logan 12:34 No, I'm like, I'm like, sitting here, and I'm like, taking it all in, and I, like that whole part where it's like, that 7, 10, days before you just said, like, this is what you're gonna feel like, but this is also you could feel a look where things are out of whack. And I think we're taught, or at least I felt like, I felt like that's just the normal thing, like things are out of whack. And, yeah, what it sounds like, is it, and I did experience this, I did seed cycling for a long time because I felt like my swings were too big. And I was like, y'all, my boobs are a little bigger because of COVID and age, but they were very small back then. And I was like, they are too small to be this tender. Like this is not fun for me. And so I heard about seed cycling, and I did it consistently for three years. Not only did I literally make myself like clockwork with my cycle, I stopped breaking out. I don't have tenderness, and I've weaned off of it, and it hasn't been an issue, but I did notice that difference in that time before, it was almost like my period was a surprise each time, because I was like, oh, I didn't even know it's coming. (inaudible) Was feeling so good. That's so fascinating. Okay, so thank you for walking us through that. I think that it's helpful to know, like, just when you have the information, like you said, you just can expect things a little different, and you can know more about how you should be feeling, as opposed to like. Why do I feel like this versus yesterday? I felt better.Jenn Pike 13:55 I just want to say something quick on that before you go and you're talking about, you know, doing the recap with your husband. So I have two kids, a girl and a boy. My son knows just as much about the female body and cycles as my daughter, and that's on purpose, because part of the stigmatism and the shame and embarrassment ends when we stop excluding men and boys from the conversation as well. It, you know, it's like there's going to come a time in a boy's life where he's gonna, you know, you're either gonna be around a woman or your girlfriend or whatever it is, and you need to be able to understand what she's going through. And as I always say to my son, like bud, you wouldn't even be here if it weren't for our bodies doing this. So you should be darn grateful. Brad Crowell 14:33 All right, so that was Episode 55 with Jenn Pike. Hope you found it super helpful and educational. Lesley Logan 14:40 Her entire episode is so, has so, it's chock-full of information. You can, you could do, if you just used her episode to figure out what your health changes are for 2025 you would have enough to work on.Brad Crowell 14:54 Yeah, she's got a lot going on, and it's amazing. All right, next up we got Episode 85 let's talk about sex baby with Celeste Holbrook.Lesley Logan 15:02 I'm obsessed with her. Just so you know, I'm actually having a call with her tomorrow morning (inaudible) on the day that I, because I just love her. Brad Crowell 15:09 Well, she basically talked about, it's kind of a tack on to what we were just talking about with with Jenn Pike, about removing shame and embarrassment. This is about destigmatizing sex and the language around sex. And one thing she said that I thought was amazing was she pets her dog because she wants to feel calm. She rides her bike because she wants to, well, feel free. She has sex because she wants to feel pleasure, right? And it's like, we make it this taboo, weird, awkward thing, and she's like, but it shouldn't be that, you know? And she talks, she goes really in-depth about how, you know, how you might find pleasure in sex.Lesley Logan 15:48 Just so you know, I loved her so much we had her on the podcast twice. And we actually talked about bodies and all that stuff. So she's just fabulous. And especially for any of you who are raised in the purity culture, this episode is extremely freeing and informative.Brad Crowell 16:04 Yeah, yeah. So enjoy.Celeste Holbrook 16:06 I always think about what we want to feel in sex. Because everything that we do behaviorally, we do it because we want to feel something. So, like, I pet my dog because I want to feel calm. I ride my bike because I want to feel free. I do certain sexual activities because I want to feel pleasure, connection, erotic, intimate, loving, whatever it is that I want to feel in sex. And so start with the feeling. So, write down my dream sexual experience would feel like, and then write those words down, and then you can work your way backwards, like, okay, if I want to feel confident, what do I need to do behaviorally in order to feel confident? Maybe I need to learn more about my body. Maybe I need to establish a better relationship with my vulva and, like, clitoris. Maybe I need to have a masturbation practice. Maybe I need to read some more books, right? So start with what you want to feel and then work your way backwards. I want to feel connected. Okay, maybe I need to work on communication styles with my partner. Maybe I need to learn how to ask more for what I want, and maybe I don't know what I want. So maybe I need to take one more step back and figure out what I like and what I don't like, and do some more creative exploration in sex, you know. So I like to start out with that list of what we want to feel, because then you can build behaviors behind that.Lesley Logan 17:23 All right. So that was Celeste Holbrook's Episode 85 at the Be It Pod. If you want to go listen to the whole thing.Lesley Logan 17:31 Up next, we actually have Episode 139, Cycle Thinking Fitness & Balancing Your Hormones with Jenny Swisher. This is really, so again, we're having hormones, this is a totally different thing. So, we're actually going to be talking more about advocating for yourself, and ladies, but also gents listening, we always have a few good men, we often have been raised that like the doctors know best but really you know your body best and I think that this episode is one of those reminders that you can be your own best doctor and when you know your body best you can actually advocate for yourself and get the best health for yourself but especially for your hormones. And Jenny Swisher is really, I mean, like, what she's been doing since being on the podcast, really helping people understand their hormones, has been pretty epic.Brad Crowell 18:19 I just want to say that while we don't know medicine, because we're not doctors and didn't dedicate ourselves to study that there generally is logic behind the medicine. So if you're being given advice that is completely illogical or confusing to you before you just say yeah, let's do it, ask them to explain that further and understand it more. And it's okay to say that doesn't make sense to me.Lesley Logan 18:45 We didn't put the clip here. But if you want more, if you're inspired to be an advocate for yourself, definitely listen to Lindsay Miller's episode, Lindsay Moore's episode on, on being an advocate. And I do think, Brad, you make a, bring up a good point, like there is logic to it, but also they have to listen to you, like, they're not, at least in the States, they're not allowed to leave the room until you're done and you say, I have no more questions. And it is a practice. It's called a medical practice, and so they're practicing just like you'd have a Pilates practice, and so it's really, you should not feel ashamed or embarrassed to be like, hmm, I think I'm going to get another opinion on that.Brad Crowell 19:25 Yeah, yeah. That's okay. Lesley Logan 19:27 Yeah. So here is Jenny Swisher to inspire you to be your own best doctor.Jenny Swisher 19:31 I think you have to be your own best doctor. And I think, but you have to go into the the appointment knowing that, I mean, I don't know about anybody listening, but I know for me, especially after I feel like I'm an expert in sitting in doctor's offices after years of doing it, I felt like I got to the point where they were just going to diagnose or give me whatever I was leading them to. You know what I mean, like you're leading the doctor to the eventual answer. And so the more hormone literate you can become about your own body and your own cycle, for example, and in the case of hormone health, the easier it's going to be for the doctor to make those connections or to really, truly help you. I find that most people don't have the awareness that they need, the self-awareness and the body awareness of their own body to be able to go and get a proper answer from a doctor. And so it starts with that. But then when you are in that situation, when you go into it knowing like, this is how my body is supposed to operate. This is how it's supposed to feel. These are the things that I've learned about hormone health. And I'm not I'm low in energy, or I'm this, or I'm that, then you can go into the appointment and say hey, I think this is how I'm supposed to be feeling. But instead, I feel this way. What are some things that we can look into?Lesley Logan 20:35 All right. That was Episode 139, with Jenny Swisher, so you can go and listen to her full episode, if you'd like here in the Be It catalog. Again, this is a round-up of just a few of our favorite health episodes, and we hope that you're enjoying getting just some reminders of some of the epic guests we've had, or maybe we're peaking your interest in a topic that you're wanting to go back and learn more about. All of our guests are pretty amazing. And I can't believe that was like almost 300 episodes ago. Some of these are like 400 episodes ago. So, but also, like, I still take these tips. I still remember these people's tips in my daily life. I reflect back upon them, and so they really meant a lot to me.Lesley Logan 21:18 I'm Lesley Logan. Brad Crowell 21:19 And I'm Brad Crowell.Lesley Logan 21:20 Thank you so much for being a listener of the Be It Till You See It Podcast. We hope that you would love this. In this episode, we explore the critical connection between foot stability—specifically the tripod foot—and hip stability. Discover how the way you distribute weight through your feet impacts which muscles you recruit, from your glutes to your quads, and how it can influence your overall movement and pain.Through real-life examples, this episode was inspired. Like a patient whose persistent hip pain was traced back to excessive foot pronation, we discuss why muscle activation starts at the ground. We also delve into the benefits of barefoot training for improving awareness of your foot's position and maintaining three points of contact on the floor.Whether you're dealing with discomfort or looking to optimize your movement, this episode reveals why paying attention to your feet is key to building stability and strength from the ground up.Exercise to help with foot contactBook your free 30-minute discovery call to chat about your goals and ways I can support you!Thank you so much for checking out this The Resilient Body Podcast episode.
