Work Authorization Expansion: Attracts and Embeds Illegal Immigration Population in U.S. Society

Parsing Immigration Policy

In this week's podcast, the Center for Immigration Studies highlights the expansion of work authorization for newly arrived migrants and those who have entered the country illegally. Work permits are an often-ignored part of the discussion on immigration policy but are a major pull factor for immigrants looking to come to the United States illegally. In this episode of Parsing Immigration Policy, Elizabeth Jacobs, the Center's Director of Regulatory Affairs and Policy, explains the importance of Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) and sheds light on how the Biden administration has exploited loopholes in immigration law to prioritize the issuances of EADs to migrants over visa holders.Jacobs also breaks down the recent Biden administration reforms which are aimed to expand work authorization eligibility even further, strengthening the job magnet that attracts illegal immigration. DHS has announced it will:start issuing EADs to migrants who are paroled into the United States that will be valid for five years, a three-year increase to current policy;renew the Temporary Protective Status (TPS) of Venezuelan nationals who arrived by March 8, 2021;extend TPS eligibility to Venezuelan migrants who arrived by July, 31, 2023 (an estimated 472,000 will be newly eligible, potentially bringing the population to over 700,000 individuals);accelerate applications for work permits filed by parolees who scheduled their entry through the CBP One app starting October 1, 2023. They will be prioritized over other categories, raising serious questions of policy and fairness.Mark Krikorian, the Center's Executive Director and host of the podcast, points out, “Work permits root individuals into American society in a way that working illegally does not. It provides access to Social Security numbers and driver's licenses, serving as a significant step toward a full amnesty. The Biden administration's large-scale expansion of work authorization for those who enter the country illegally deserves more attention from the media and Congress.”HostMark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestElizabeth Jacobs is the Director of Regulatory Affairs at the Center for Immigration Studies.RelatedWork Authorization Expansion Is the Problem — Not the Solution to Cities' Migrant IssuesUSCIS Ombudsman Confirms: Biden Policies Hobble Legal Immigration SystemCitizenship and Immigration Services Annual Report 2023DHS Creates Yet Another Parole Program for Aliens to Cut in LineFollowFollow Parsing Immigration Policy on Ricochet, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts.Intro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. Guest: Brandi Morin, French/Cree/Iroquois journalist from Treaty 6 in Alberta Indigenous people have been on the frontlines of fighting to protect and sustain the land and environment for years. They warn that the west's supposedly eco-friendly climate strategy is also a repeat of history. Resources needed for sustainable alternate energy such as mineral mining continues the practise of extracting from the earth, threatening Indigenous lands and people. One of these new frontlines is Nevada's remote Thacker Pass where a battle is playing out in Paiute and Shoshone territories between the local Indigenous tribes and a Canadian mining company that is mining the lithium beneath their land.A recently released short documentary “Thacker Pass: Mining the Sacred” by award-winning journalist Brandi Morin and Geordie Day took us to the heart of it. It's part of a cross-border project between Ricochet Media, IndigiNews and The Real News Network in the United States. According to the Real News Network, in 2022, the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribe signed a Community Benefits Agreement with Lithium Americas. At roughly 64 kms away, the reservation is the closest – and poorest – in the region. The company said in a statement to Real News Network: '"We are pleased to have the support of the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribe as we advance Thacker Pass and look forward to generations of future collaboration."' This week's podcast is a rebroadcast of the September 14 House Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement hearing entitled, “Terrorist Entry Through the Southwest Border.” The hearing examined, “the national security implications of the Department of Homeland Security's open-borders agenda, including how the Biden Administration's policies have led to record-high encounters of aliens on the Terrorist Watchlist as well as the mass release of unvetted aliens into U.S. communities.”Todd Bensman, the Center's Senior National Security Fellow, gave testimony first. In it, he explains how the current immigration crisis at the southwest border has elevated and exacerbated the homeland security threat of terrorist border infiltration to discomfiting levels. Two other witnesses used their first hand experience in law enforcement in their testimony: Charles Marino, Former Senior Law Enforcement Advisor, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Rodney Scott, Distinguished Senior Fellow for Border Security, Texas Public Policy Foundation.Mark Krikorian, the Center's executive director and host of Parsing Immigration Policy, moderates this rebroadcast of the Center's panel. In his closing commentary, Krikorian discusses a new report by Todd Bensman entitled, “New Records: Biden DHS Has Approved Hundreds of Thousands of Migrants for Secretive Foreign Flights Directly into U.S. Airports.” This report uses DHS data, gained through the Freedom of Information Act, on the controversial new rechanneling program, which uses the CBP One app to allow migrants to take commercial passenger flights from foreign countries straight to their American cities of choice.HostMark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestTodd Bensman is a Senior National Security Fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies.RelatedHearing Video and Written TestimonyNew Records: Biden DHS Has Approved Hundreds of Thousands of Migrants for Secretive Foreign Flights Directly into U.S. AirportsFollowFollow Parsing Immigration Policy on Ricochet, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts.Intro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. On this episode of Parsing Immigration Policy, we are joined by Sheriff Mark Dannels of Cochise County, Ariz., and Andrew Arthur, Resident Fellow in Law and Policy at the Center for Immigration Studies. Cochise County is located along Arizona's southeastern border with Mexico, and Sheriff Dannels and his colleagues have had to deal with the border crisis firsthand. This week's topic is a rather grim one – the deaths of illegal immigrants at the border. Both guests recently testified at a joint House subcommittee hearing in Arizona on the effects of the border crisis on American communities and explain on the podcast how the level of security at the border under the Biden administration has never been lower, which is luring more migrants to put themselves in harm's way by hiring smugglers to bring them to the United States.Sheriff Dannels describes the inhumane conditions migrants find themselves in when they make the illegal journey to the United States, comparing the agreements they make with smugglers to “modern-day slavery”. Arthur explains that so long as migrants believe they'll be allowed to enter illegally, they will hire smugglers to bring them to the country. Due to the Biden administration's “catch-and-release” policies, migrants are more willing than ever to place their lives in the hands of dangerous and rapacious criminals who are only interested in money—often with the deadliest of consequences. In his closing commentary, Mark Krikorian, Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies and host of the Parsing Immigration Policy, speculates that the litigation over the thousand-foot long marine barrier on the Rio Grande placed by Texas Gov. Abbott may reach the Supreme Court, allowing the justices to rule on whether the border crisis caused by the current administration constitutes an “invasion” under the Constitution.HostMark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestMark Dannels is Sheriff of Cochise County, AZ.RelatedScorching Heat Is Contributing to Migrant DeathsSearch and Rescue Stats Highlight Humanitarian Disaster at the BorderFifth Circuit Grants Stay in Texas Rio Grande Barrier CaseFollowFollow Parsing Immigration Policy on Ricochet, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts.Intro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. On this 145th episode of The Thriller Zone, I'm excited to be hanging out with yet another outstanding author of thriller fiction. Today, it's Taylor Moore, author of Ricochet. If you haven't heard of Taylor before, it may be because this is only his third book; however, there's one thing I can guarantee: you'll be hearing a LOT more from this phenomenal writer.Ricochet, the third in the Garrett Kohl Series, has everything you're looking for in a thriller: fast action, superb suspense, an intriguing premise, and a hero you can root for.Taylor had this to say about his somewhat new career: "I'm often asked how I ended up at the CIA, a question to which there are more than a few answers. But what I think people really want to know is what edged a regular guy like me out of the light and into the shadows of the intelligence world: a what makes you tick kind of thing. It's a question I can answer in one single phrase—passion for adventure. This is the same passion that drew me to childhood heroes like Indiana Jones, James Bond, and Jack Ryan. This quest for adventure propelled me on a solo journey at the age of twenty-four through the jungles of Bolivia, over the Andes, and across the raging Drake Passage on a Russian icebreaker to Antarctica. And it's the same passion I have now that spurs me to write thriller novels and action-adventure stories. We may grow up, but we don't have to give in. No matter our age or what we do, a good passion for adventure never dies. And if you're like me and you're searching for the next one, then look no further. You've arrived."Folks, you're in for a genuine treat, as Taylor introduces you (or reintroduces you) to a believable hero with smarts, and more than an ample amount of heart.Want to learn more about Taylor and his world? We've got a rematch between Johnny Gargano and NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa, but this time, it's Last Man Standing. Kairi Sane also goes for the NXT Women's Title against defending champion Shayna Baszler. Adam Cole puts his North American Title on the line against Ricochet. EC3 and Velveteen Dream also clash. And we open this card with a fantastic Tag-Team Titles match with the Undisputed Era (Strong & O'Reilly) defending against Mustache Mountain (Bate & Seven). In the news, we discuss the passing of a wrestling legend, the big return for a former member of The Shield, Hulk Hogan's apology to the WWE locker room, the Miz saying silly things, a major lawsuit between Jeff Jarrett and Anthem Entertainment, and much more! Guestworker Programs: Can They Ever Work as Advertised?

Parsing Immigration Policy

Congress created the first guestworker programs to fill labor shortages on a temporary basis, without displacing American workers or abusing the foreign workers.Over time, the programs have multiplied and expanded, such that now close to a million people a year are imported for both less-skilled and professional-level jobs. American workers are, in fact, displaced, the “temporary” foreign workers often stay permanently, and are often exploited. Is it possible for guestworker programs to work as Congress intended? In this week's episode of Parsing Immigration Policy, David North, a fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies, joins host Mark Krikorian, North's experience with the foreign worker issue dates back to the Eisenhower administration. He says the primary question regarding guestworker policies is whether government policy should make it easier for employers to meet their labor needs by importing labor from outside the U.S.The easiest solution would be for Congress to abolish some or all guestworker programs. Noting that this is unlikely to occur, North and Krikorian discuss whether lawmakers have prioritized the guestworker issue sufficiently to ensure that reforms that would guarantee fairness to American workers, such as requiring employers to make a positive effort to hire American workers before recruiting foreign labor. North suggests reforms that would improve the chances that Americans are not pushed out of the workforce, foreign workers are not abused, and the programs are genuinely temporary. In his closing commentary, Krikorian highlights a new report from the Center relevant to the foreign-worker debate. “Working-Age, but Not Working” examines the long-term decline of U.S.-born, working-age men in the labor force, particularly among those without a bachelor's degree. This large population of U.S.-born individuals on the sidelines of the labor market contributes to a host of social problems, but the availability of cheap immigrant labor allows employers, and society at large, to ignore their plight and not invest in bringing them into the labor market.HostMark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestDavid North is a Fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies.RelatedWorking-Age, but Not WorkingFollowFollow Parsing Immigration Policy on YouTube, Ricochet, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts.Intro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. As loyal listeners know, yesterday Steve, John, and Lucretia took over the flagship Ricochet podcast in the absence of both Peter Robinson (still somewhere in the Witness Protection Program) and Rob Long (out walking a Hollywood picket line somewhere), and we made James Lileks' life completely miserable. We decided that a couple of issues we brought up deserved some extended discussion in this bonus episode, starting with the "trust" question: why do Americans now hold nearly all major institutions, both public and private, in such low regard? We run through a number of factors, from ideology, competence, and corruption, but also wonder about whether our ruling elites today don't have the same kind of noblesse oblige that characterized the elites of the 1950s (the Dulles brothers get a special shout-out).Next, we return to the question of "human rights" versus the natural rights of the American Founding, and the mischief that the rise of "human rights" has entailed in modern times. Steve had intended to nitpick John's understanding of Thomas Hobbes, but the Learned Lucretia shows up in force, with marvelous renditions of Locke and Hobbes, casting doubt on Steve's proposition that maybe there exists a "Hobbistotle" to go with Tom West's "Lockistotle." It's not as wonky and esoteric as it sounds! Well actually maybe it is, but we think you'll still enjoy this Trump and Biden-free episode (and ad-free, too!)Our thanks, by the way, to the Ricochet team for the honor of occupying their show, and to James Lileks for his indulgence. But because Lucretia and John once again wrongly dismiss Steve's embrace of prog rock ("Rock and roll that went to college," as Jody Bottum calls it), the exit music for this episode is an excerpt from "The Chamber of 32 Doors," which is the Prog Rock version of "Rich Men North of Richmond" which we discuss briefly in this episode.I'd rather trust a countryman than a townmanYou can judge by his eyes, take a look if you canHe'll smile through his guard, survival trains hardI'd rather trust a man who works with his handsHe looks at you once, you know he understandsDon't need any shield, when you're out in the field. . .The priest and the magicianSingin' all the chants that they have ever heardAnd they're all calling out my nameEven academics, searching printed wordMaybe the academics will figure it out someday, but judging by the elite culture's reaction to "Rich Men North of Richmond," today is not that day.

And is Iyo Sky officially a made woman with the WWE Women's Championship? And most importantly: Did anyone from Star Wars actually care about those medals or did they just want Chewbacca not to have one?The Main Event: Roman Reigns, The Usos and injuriesRoman Reigns finally had his main event match against Jey Uso. Thanks to a sudden betrayal by Jimmy, the Tribal chief retained his title, which puts us in an intriguing position for the story to continue; especially since Roman hurt his back early in the match on Saturday. And he's not the only one. Don Tony And Kevin Castle Show returns for your WWE SUMMERSLAM 2023 REVIEW & AFTERMATH, presented by BlueWire. In addition to reviewing SummerSlam, DT/KC discuss several other topics including: The Bloodline scenario Don Tony and Kevin Castle previously discussed remains on track. Jimmy Uso is pissed off & turns on Jey for being selfish going for the Title. Jimmy also remains angry with Roman Reigns & Solo SIkoa, who himself is not too thrilled with Roman. DT/KC believe this leads to a Fatal 4-Way for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. DT/KC also vent on what turned into stupidity with The Elders part of the storyline. Brock Lesnar beat the crap out of Cody Rhodes. A dozen Suplexes, F5's, spear thru the barricades. In the end 'Cody Balboa' prevails with Brock then acknowledging Cody with a handshake, a hug, and a NOD. DT/KC ask an interesting question that may give insight of the reason behind this feud. And how this could tie in with Roman Reigns. DT/KC also discussed who Cody should and should NOT feud with next. LA Knight wins the SummerSlam Battle Royal but also gets redemption from a botched spot the night before on SmackDown. LA Knight wins Battle Royal but not before hitting Sheamus with the Belly-to-Belly Suplex off the top rope at SummerSlam. Bianca Belair despite a 'leg injury', pins Asuka to win WWE Women's Championship. However, Iyo Sky would capitalize on that leg injury by cashing in MITB Briefcase & winning the Women's Title. DT/KC address where Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair go from here, who Iyo Sky should feud with first, reports of Kairi Sane return, and the future of Damage Ctrl. Seth Rollins and Finn Balor told a great story in their match. However, the Judgement Day involvement was clunky and would cost Balor a possible WHC win. The friction between Damian Priest & Finn Balor intensifies. Shayna Baszler and Ronda Rousey tried, but their MMA offense was too watered down. An unfortunate 'arm injury' to Shayna hurt momentum the match started to build. DT/KC explain why WWE should not consider future MMA Rules matches. DT/KC also believe those saying Ronda is 100% gone from WWE may be a bit premature. Ricochet and Logan Paul put on a banger. Drew McIntyre and Gunther make mincemeat of each other. Pay attention to Drew McIntyre's next move, which may catch many WWE fans off guard. Especially for Matt Riddle?! WWE SUMMERSLAM 2023 RESULTS: Roman Reigns (c) def Jey Uso (Tribal Combat for Undisputed WWE Universal Championship) Iyo Sky def Bianca Belair (c) (New WWE Women's Champion) Bianca Belair def Asuka (c) and Charlotte Flair (New WWE Women's Champion) Seth Rollins (c) def Finn Balor (World Heavyweight Championship) Gunther (c) def Drew McIntyre (Intercontinental Championship) Shayna Baszler def Ronda Rousey (MMA Rules) LA Knight wins SummerSlam Battle Royal Cody Rhodes def Brock Lesnar Logan Paul def Ricochet ==== CLICK HERE to listen to WWE SUMMERSLAM 2023 REVIEW online. WWE SummerSlam 2023 full show review, and results with JDfromNY. JDfromNY reviews SummerSlam 2023 for Saturday August 5th, 2023. The 36th edition of SummerSlam proved to be a rather disappointing one when it was all over. A decent show that fell flat, with a dull Detroit crowd. Jey Uso was betrayed by his brother Jimmy Uso, as Jey Uso, and Roman Reigns engaged in Tribal Combat for the WWE Universal Championship. Seth Rollins defended the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Finn Balor, as The Judgement have major problems heading into Monday Night Raw. GUNTHER defended the WWE Intercontinental Championship against Drew McIntyre, and Cody Rhodes finally slays Brock Lesnar. Also, IYO SKY cashes in her Money In The Bank to become the new WWW Women's Champion, and Ricochet and Logan Paul try and go viral in a one on one match.
