How do you find hope and personal empowerment in the face of war and political unrest?  According to Lea Endres, the CEO of NationBuilder, democracy is the least violent form of government currently known to humans.  It's a system. It's also an idea. And it lives in our imaginations.  Research shows that when citizens are actively engaged in showing up for their community,  it can actually turn the tide in countries that have slid into authoritarianism.  Human beings will not endorse or advocate for violence against another group until they have dehumanized that group.  Dehumanization is a prerequisite for violence. Lea reminds us that we each have personal power and agency.  When institutions fail, it's actually civil society that can bring us back into a healthy balance. For our second live podcast series, we reimagine democracy as an everyday practice of listening, speaking, and asking questions in a new way to humanize one another and build our muscle of empathy. Tune into this raw, inquisitive conversation with our live audience, the Gratitude Blooming team, Jim Herr from the Democracy Center, and Lea Endres from NationBuilder.Enjoy the captivating intro and closing beats of the Taiko drummers from On Ensemble to notice more fully with your heart.   Share your perspective as you experience this practice with us at hello@gratitudeblooming.com!   If you enjoyed this episode, please take a moment to leave us a 5-star rating and review. The Nation Builders at Colonial Williamsburg, like Katharine Pittman – who was actually here portraying Mrs. Washington – work to ensure her impact and those of other key historical figures live on today through engaging, well-researched, and historically accurate experiences. Host Andrew Kaufmann spoke with Katharine who, as Mrs. Washington, talked about her experience as the first lady in a newly formed country, the hardships and joys that come with public service, and her important role in post-Revolutionary War politics. We also discuss Katharine's passion for history and her journey to becoming a Nation Builder at Colonial Williamsburg on this episode of The Strategerist, presented by the George W. Neal helps people reach their perfect form; extinguishing all the weaknesses permanently so their strengths flourish automatically - becoming unrecognisable, unbreakable and unshakable.Neal lost 8 years of his life because of poor financial decisions that lead to a mountain of debt. These poor financial decisions were a result of Neals immature grandiosity and poor daily habits. At the same time Neal found his self divorced and completely out of shape. Every problem under the Sun has the same singular source - conflict or flaws within the mind. Neals mess was a result of flawed character. Neal eventually surmounted these challenges and resolved his internal division by unifying his mind and body - by bridging the gap between the conscious and the subconscious to yield the Ultraconscious. Neals job is to help people uncover their true individuality and strength; to become free in spirit no matter what the physical circumstances may be. The best path is a fusion of form and intellect, skill and substance. The process of cultivating genius is simple but not easy. Hybrid mastery entails nurturing your mind and your body so that you may clearly access the source – this is how you become a Unified Man. A Unified Man is clear. A Unified Man is strong. A Unified Man is in control. A Unified Man rules his internal territory – he has built a Nation from Within.

My chat with Siila Watt-Cloutier so moved me, and she made me think differently. For example, she believes that the trauma we are going through as a Planet and Human Species are the same, and so is the path to healing.  If she were sitting down with me today, I would ask:  If everything on this Planet is interconnected, does that mean we all feel the loss when a species goes extinct, or a fire consumes a forest? You will also have many questions as Silla Watt-Cloutier will open your mind to our planet's realities and told through her gift as an observer, storyteller, and someone who can bring together to bring about change. Siila is one of the world's leading thinkers and doers in preserving our planet and humanity, with a particular focus on protecting the way of life of the Inuit. (I have listed a partial list of her acknowledgements and awards and acknowledgements below.) If you are like me, you will mark so many points of the journey she shares as remarkable. Silla's Indigenous values and lessons are worth considering for how we all live and respect Mother Nature. One that stuck with me is to stop thinking about problems and instead feel them. To act, you must be emotionally vested.  So this is Sillia Watt-Cloutier's remarkable story.  Don't just listen to her words....feel them.  And then share them because we are all in this together. Lindsay Patrick, Head of Strategic Initiatives & ESG at RBC Capital Markets, joins the show. Lindsay is passionate about her and her organization's role in preserving our planet and its inhabitants. Becoming successful in life, sometimes one comes to think, is contingent on so many things, but a careful look at it again reveals that only one thing is required, and through this one thing, other things come to light. It is like passing white light through a prism, and it comes to reveal the other colors which make life beautiful. So what is this one thing, you may be asking? It is Leadership.Renowned leadership expert John C. Maxwell's definition of Leadership sums it up for me: "Everything rises and falls on leadership." Political fundraising versus nonprofit fundraising. They might be very different animals, but there are still common lessons to be learned. My guest on this episode of What the Fundraising is offering fascinating insights into what does – and doesn't – work when it comes to attracting and retaining a loyal donor base. A certified NationBuilder expert, Ian Patrick Hines knows how to leverage game-changing tools and why it's important to differentiate between high-pressure, quick conversion campaigns and the kinds of high-quality, sustained communications that cement nonprofit partnerships. Ian offers great strategies for shifting your fundraising model from one of scarcity to deep abundance, fills us in on the current status of various modes of pitching, and reframes donor communication as an ongoing conversation rather than endless series of “donate now” emails.  You'll learn about the inverse relationship between pseudo-urgency and long-term donor engagement as well as how to develop a communications style that will establish your organization as a trusted advisor – rather than another source of noise simply to be tuned out. Updates featuring personal narratives and compelling voices, in the long run, says Ian, are far likelier to generate the donor relationships that fundraisers seek. His best advice? If he was running a nonprofit, he would email a lot. But he would rarely ask for money. Episode Highlights: (02:57) Ian's fundraising journey  (03:40) The changes we've seen in political fundraising and campaigns generally (05:12) Scarcity versus Abundance (08:37) Quality Matters (10:16) The pitfalls of taking an overly aggressive or deceptive startup approach  (13:23) Time-box moments. (22:20) Conversion rates and real on-the-ground responses (25:27) Ian's advice for nonprofits on their communication's strategy.  (26:50) Establishing trust through your communications.  (30:36) The numbers Ian uses to know if he's ‘on track' with his fundraising (31:30) All about fundraising via text. Your head will spin with the data-driven insights and post-pandemic strategies my guest has to share on this jam-packed episode of What the Fundraising. Woodrow Rosenbaum, Chief Data Officer at GivingTuesday, brings a powerful lens on fundraising based on his previous career in commercial marketing as well as the detailed metrics he's constantly scanning for clues to donor behavior. In large part because of the COVID-19 global impact and response, many of the nonprofit world's old-school models, false assumptions, and self-limiting strategies are up for re-evaluation.  From his viewpoint at GivingTuesday, the donor movement unleashing radical generosity around the world, Woodrow has a unique and broad-based understanding of the dynamics at play in today's fluid giving environment. We're all being called upon to break old models, be brave and shift from a scarcity mindset into one of abundance!  Among the many things Woodrow shares thoughts about:  Abandoning zero-sum competitiveness in favor of helping all boats rise together Why many fundraising truisms no longer hold What makes for the most resilient nonprofits, especially in recessionary times Why fundraising that exclusively emphasizes the transactional leaves money – as well as goodwill and long-term engagement – on the table Why Donor Fatigue actually isn't a thing  How recurring donations are a boon and why they're sticky Woodrow unpacks what it means to approach nonprofit work holistically, aligning fundraising with story-led marketing activities that expand nonprofit missions, build community, drive social movements and inspire donors to get on board with giving, again and again. You won't want to miss the surprising research insights or leading-edge practical advice inside this episode.  Huge thanks to our sponsors and friends over at NationBuilder, for helping us provide this series on Mobilizing Your Missions. Dominique Morgan is a powerhouse executive director – most recently at The Okra Project, a collective addressing the needs of Black Trans people – but hers is a story that could have gone a different way. Growing up in Omaha, Nebraska, Dominique was repeatedly incarcerated. It was a lived experience without dreams or prospects – until she had a few life-changing experiences. A single volunteer gig working at a Pride festival started Dominique on the path to higher education, paid nonprofit work that she loved, and an unstoppable voice in the movement to dismantle broken systems.  This impressive leader previously took Black & Pink from a modest budget into the multi-millions, leveraging her passion for abolishing violence against LGBTQ people in prison through advocacy, education, direct service, and organizing. While moving through the nonprofit world, Dominique has brought her unique prism to the psychological and practical baggage that too often diverts us from our core missions. But she now knows how to fundraise powerfully for her work through an abundance mindset that also allows her to see where she can redistribute funds or make connections to help others move forward on the path to their shared north star.  Dominique embraces both celebration of all that nonprofits accomplish, while also seeing and calling out the shadow work that we must continuously do to fully stand in our integrity and purpose. You'll come away from this wide-ranging conversation with a refreshing sense of what can be achieved if we choose to allow vulnerability, share our stories, and support one another.  Many thanks to NationBuilder, the software that builds movements, for sponsoring this episode of What the Fundraising. First Mike Leitch, Technical Lead, NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE, takes us on a whistle stop tour of Carbontech history. Before XPRIZE, he served as the Research Manager at RGL Reservoir Management, an oilfield manufacturing company based in Edmonton, Canada. There, he worked with a diverse team of engineers and scientists at the University of Alberta to build a comprehensive understanding of little known and little studied aspects of the oil recovery process. To bring us to the present Nikki Batchelor gives us the scoop on where the tech is now. Nikki is the Director of Prize Operations for the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE. She has served as an Innovation Advisor to USAID on their Grand Challenges for Development initiative, helping to design and execute incentive competitions around energy, health, education, civic engagement, and water. Most recently, she worked as a Senior Strategist at NationBuilder, helping the tech start-up expand into new markets, explore product use cases, and lead marketing efforts. Ms. Batchelor has also managed large grant programs for USAID in Iraq and Afghanistan with DAI, both at home and overseas. Before XPRIZE James was a journalist covering international energy and carbon markets. He started his career as an editor in the Shanghai bureau of Interfax, Russia’s largest private news organization. Following three years in China, he moved to Singapore to focus on Asia-Pacific oil markets. Most recently, Mr. Burbridge covered North American carbon markets for the price reporting subsidiary of IHS Markit, where he created a new report for the consultancy focused on California’s environmental compliance programs.Links: http://carbon.xprize.orghttp://xprize.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

GUEST BIO: [Annie Mosbacher](https://www.linkedin.com/in/anniemosbacher/) is the Vice President of Customer Engagement at [NationBuilder](https://nationbuilder.com/), a software for political candidates, non-profit organizations and brands. Their customers are individuals who are working with organizations, building a community, or advocating for a cause. Annie's day to day involves the long term health and retention of their customer base. Annie's passion for non-profit organizations and the power political candidates have to make change led her to work with and found her own non-profit organization prior to NationBuilder. Her first endeavor was in helping underserved communities. This inspired her to co-found a non-profit connecting high school students with career paths they weren't aware of. Her mission was to fill the large gap between the fields students were blindly pursuing and careers the workforce actually needed. Annie continues to pursue change, regardless of it benefiting her own political beliefs, through her VP position at NationBuilder. SHOW SUMMARY: Today's guest is Annie Mosbacher, the Vice President of Customer Engagement at NationBuilder. NationBuilder is a SaaS company offering non-profits, political candidates and brands help in building their communities. Annie oversees their client acquisition and retention, which is an incredibly interesting position as her political consumers don't necessarily need the product, a campaign builder, after election day. In this episode, Annie explains how NationBuilder acquires customers and retains them after they've finished using the product. She walks us through their non-partisan view and explains why it continues to be a fundamental part of their business, despite backlash. Lastly, she explains the future of digital political and fundraising campaigns and how any business can learn from these industries to grow their own dedicated community. This is the Lean Commerce Podcast. TOPICS: How did you initially start working with non-profits and political campaigns? 1:44 I have a deep and profound connection with higher education. I served as an executive director at the beginning of my career, helping underserved communities. Afterwards, I co-founded a startup to help young high school students connect with future careers they may not have been aware of. There's a large gap in what people are pursuing and what the workforce actually needs, and I wanted to close it. What careers did you find students most often followed? 4:46 Students often followed a liberal arts degree or went to college and used it to initially explore their future career. Yet, plumbing, welding, and more technical fields had the most opportunities. Students weren't choosing these careers because they weren't aware of the option. We explained to them that in three years, they would make six figures in these fields and if they were interested we showed them how to follow through. What does customer acquisition look like when your customers are political candidates? 10:05 We have always provided a free voter file to people interested in running for office but don't have the experience or connections to show them how to build a campaign. Our campaign courses are certainly there to drive customer acquisition, but they are also designed to help candidates build their first campaign. How do you advance your mission and financially keep NationBuilder afloat? 13:44 It's multifaceted, but the grounding principle is that we are extremely non-partisan. We'll work with any customer regardless of their political beliefs or backgrounds, which is unprecedented in the tech and software political space. We also have a lot of diversification in the scale of customers we support, ranging from large international campaigns to local school board candidates. 15:24 We offer different engagement paths, so whether a customer wins or loses their campaign, there are ways for them to c

Clearly disruption plays out not just in business but also in politics. Whether it was the Scottish national party, recent election campaigns, or local school boards, people grew and organized communities online all last year through NationBuilder -- which provided a software platform for those otherwise underserved from an established technology perspective (hence the disruption theory reference). Harnessing the energy of communities goes beyond politics though, to all kinds of movements. But what happens when people remain in filter bubbles on the internet -- the very internet that NationBuilder CEO Jim Gilliam famously called his "religion"? What happens when that religious fervor or energy can be... "rabid"-like? Especially in a context where money, media, and other traditional institutions might not have the same impact or control they once did? "The internet can reflect back whatever it is that we want it to -- and we need more leaders to step up and say, 'Look, this is the way that I want it to be'," argues Gilliam in this episode of the a16z Podcast in conversation with Ben Horowitz (based on a session recorded at our recent a16z Summit event). How do you face down cancer? Get told you can't get life-saving organ transplants, and go about getting them anyway? And in the middle of that mental and physical storm, how do you find the thing that you and only you were meant to do -- and start building it? One person with answers is Jim Gilliam, the founder of NationBuilder, because that is what he had to do -- all of it. It's given Gilliam a clear philosophy on life, and on being a leader. And what he's learned along the way, he says, is something everyone can tap into. Gilliam first told his story in a break-the-Internet video, “The Internet is My Religion,” he's gone deeper with his recently published book of the same title. a16z's Ben Horowitz sat down with Gilliam on the occasion of his book launch, to hear more about his philosophy on life, religion, leadership and what we all can do to move this world forward. For Jim Gilliam, the founder of NationBuilder, community is everything. When he needed a double lung transplant, Gilliam turned to the Internet and to his online community to make it happen. He's organized political campaigns, made documentary films, and built his company NationBuilder by tapping into the power that large scale communities on the internet provide. Community at internet scale is a deep reservoir of people, ideas and yes, money, that Gilliam believes changes how we do almost everything - and makes almost anything possible.
