On October 31, 1984, 25 year old Doreen Erbert, who was eight months pregnant, was brutally murdered in her San Jose home by a masked intruder wearing a wolf costume. Her 4-year-old daughter witnessed the horror while hiding, and her husband returned home minutes too late to stop it, only to find a horrific scene left behind. As the investigation unfolded, detectives uncovered a deeply personal motive rooted in past tragedy, loss, and revenge. When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters have created their own peaceful and secret society within an exclusive luxury apartment building called Fabletown. But when Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Fabletown's sheriff, a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, to determine if the killer is Bluebeard, Rose's ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber. You've heard of the Big Bad Wolf, Call of the Wild, and countless other wolf tales… but have you ever heard of Sea Wolves? These extraordinary wolves are unlike any others on Earth. Joining us today is Dr. Chris Darimont—a professor at the University of Victoria, the Director of Science at the Raincoast Conservation Foundation, and one of the world's leading experts on Sea Wolves. He's here to share their fascinating story. These wild canines roam the remote coastline of British Columbia, living in one of the most stunning and untamed environments on the planet. But here's what makes them truly unique: over 80% of their diet comes from the ocean! They feast on fish, crabs, seals, and even barnacles, adapting to a marine lifestyle in ways no other wolf species has. And get this—they don't just wade in the water; they're incredible long-distance swimmers, sometimes covering up to 7 miles between islands! Imagine spotting a wolf slicing through the waves like an apex predator of both land and sea. If you haven't seen the award-winning documentary Takaya: Lone Wolf, put it on your must-watch list. It tells the unbelievable true story of a lone Sea Wolf who captivated the world with his journey. Scientists, conservationists, and Indigenous Nations are working together to better understand and protect these wolves. The First Nations have long believed Sea Wolves bring good fortune and prosperity—so by the time you finish this episode, maybe a little luck will come your way too! In this heartwarming episode, Bijal Vachharajani, children's author of planet-friendly books, takes us on a unique journey of all the beloved fairy tales we grew up with, but against a backdrop of climate change. Imagine Snow White without snow, the Little Mermaid without the ocean, the Big Bad Wolf without his enchanted forest. This makes up the plot and theme of her intriguing book, ‘When Fairyland Lost Its Magic.'Bijal shares her love for nature while explaining how children retain the wonder for it with a natural affinity that is lost on adults. And how, it was this realization that gave her the idea for this book. She explores themes of animals and their relationship with nature in her book, and talks about how urban children are growing up with environmental generational amnesia. Most importantly though, she shares her aim of wanting children to form a bond with nature through her books, so that they may grow up to be adults who save it from extinction. She shares advice on writing for children, endearing anecdotes about being in the moment to observe a sparrow or hug a tree, and how she blends an important topic like environmental change with fairy tales. Mohua and Bijal also laugh about how in Bijal's book princes are waiting to spot a princess that needs rescuing, but there isn't one around in her modern feminist eco-friendly retelling. Her unique take on all the children's classics highlights the power of imagination and tests the boundaries of conventional retellings with an aim to bring about positive, climate conscious change. Summary: In this week's message, Pastor Strickland reflects on the role of God as our shepherd, inspired by the stories of biblical figures like Jacob, Joseph, and David. He draws a comparison to a nursery rhyme question, "Who's afraid of the big bad wolf?" to illustrate the challenges and fears we face in life. Pastor Strickland reminds us that just as these individuals were shepherded by God's grace and protection through trials and threats, we too need not fear the metaphorical "big bad wolf" in our lives today. Whether it's fears of the future, the burden of past mistakes, or the wolves of life that nip at our heels, our faith and trust in God as our ultimate shepherd can guide us through. His key message serves as a call to trust in God, forgive past wrongs, and embrace the security found in divine guidance: Our Shepherd is always with us, providing strength and protection. Hey Friends! On this episode of the Airtime Misfits Podcast we're discussing Big Bad Wolf, formerly located at Busch Gardens Williamsburg in Williamsburg, VA. Since opening in 1984, this coaster was loved by many park goers and enthusiasts alike. So when it's closure was annouced in 2009, it left many Big Bad Wolf fans pretty upset. Fear not because soon you'll be able to relive some of the magic of Big Bad Wolf, sort of. In 2025, Busch Gardens Williamsburg will debut Big Bad Wolf: The Wolf's Revenge as a homage to the orginal. Although the name is lacking in creativity and the ride itself doesnt look near as exciting as the original, We're happy to see the park pay an homage to a previous iconic coaster. Biz Book Broadcast regular Ron Tester is back in the studio today to help me unpack the important issues around the Big Bad Wolf from Three Little Pigs Fame. Our text is The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by John Scieszka which retells the story from the wolf's point of view. With lovely illustrations from Lane Smith, this books gives us the other side of the fairy story. Which gives us as good a reason as any to talk about branding – for once, it's not much of a stretch. So much to dig into. Look for more shows in this Classics strand where we take well-known stories + for no good reason discuss them as business books.
