What would defence reform look like if we stopped overcomplicating it? In this Oxford+ in brief episode, host Susannah de Jager asks Alison Hawks questions that reveal how leaders think under pressure, what shapes their decisions, and what they are curious about right now. Alison argues that defence needs to get out of its own way: procurement should be a clearer transaction where the military owns the problem, industry owns the solution, and requirements reflect that division of expertise. She shares practical advice for anyone entering the sector tomorrow, using the simple test of desirability, feasibility, and viability to avoid building solutions nobody will fund or use. Looking ahead to 2050, Alison predicts a different defence marketplace where today's primes may not dominate in the same way, even as scale still depends on major supply chains.Dr Alison Hawks: Dr Alison Hawks is co-founder and CEO of BMNT Ltd, the UK arm of BMNT, where she advises governments and technology companies on accelerating adoption of commercial innovation in defence and national security. How do you sell to a customer where the decision-maker is actually five different people, and half of them might move roles before the contract lands? In this episode of Oxford+, host Susannah de Jager speaks with Dr Alison Hawks, co-founder and CEO of BMNT Ltd, about why defence innovation is becoming a structural opportunity, and why procurement literacy is often more important than the technology itself. They unpack the realities of B2G: long buying cycles, complex stakeholder incentives, and the traps that stall companies after a promising pilot. The conversation lands at a timely moment. The UK's Strategic Defence Review commits to an ‘always on' munitions pipeline, including building at least six new energetics and munitions factories, signalling how seriously government is now treating sovereign capability and industrial resilience. In this explosive edition of BizNews Daybreak, Alec Hogg unpacks two major confrontations shaking South Africa. First, SAAI's Dr Theo de Jager exposes a "Covid-style" scam in the agricultural sector—alleging cronies lining up to charge farmers R300 for Foot-and-mouth disease vaccines that should cost just R55. He argues the cadres are using "biosecurity" as a smokescreen for profit-gouging and control. Plus, we take you inside Parliament for a fiery showdown between EFF leader Julius Malema and forensic investigator Paul O'Sullivan, where accusations of espionage and fake qualifications flew across the committee room. Also in this episode: Gun Law Warning: Jonathan Deal of Safe Citizen explains why new legislation could leave vulnerable South Africans defenceless. Market Wrap: Capitec's muted reaction to strong numbers, Sasol's rise, and why the US is cosying up to Venezuelan oil. Hy het gewaarsku dat 'n oorbelaste regbank 'n direkte bedreiging vir Namibië se demokrasie inhou.
In tonight's BizNews Briefing, Dr Theo de Jager assesses South Africa's foot-and-mouth response, while Bloomberg covers a US jury trial over claims social platforms were designed to addict teens. Jonathan Deal then outlines firearms bill concerns, and Peter Major closes with a Wealth Building view on AfriMat.
As South Africa's dairy and beef sectors teeter on the brink, agriculture leader Theo de Jager goes head-to-head with government over foot-and-mouth disease. With vaccines allegedly delayed, prices questioned and bureaucratic control under fire, he warns: every day lost could cost farms – and food security – dearly.

Former ATP doubles star John‑Laffnie de Jager, who turned a birth injury that damaged a nerve in his leg into what he calls his “greatest gift,” recently guided Team World to victory in the inaugural World Tennis Continental Cup in Shenzhen, China. In an interview with BizNews, the South African who grew up on a farm in Ermelo reflects on the resilience he built overcoming his disability, his partnerships with legends like Martina Navratilova, and organising the Match in Africa between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in Cape Town, which drew a world‑record 51,954 spectators. And he's far from done. De Jager is now partnering with Stellenbosch University to build a state‑of‑the‑art tennis facility to nurture emerging talent across Africa and revive the South African Open. He has also launched a new leadership venture, Beyond the Baseline, translating tennis‑honed grit, resilience, and mental conditioning into powerful tools for business leaders, teams, and high performers.
Amy MacIver speaks to John-Laffnie de Jager, former South African tennis star and head coach of Team World, about his journey leading his team to victory at the World Tennis Continental Cup. He shares how the lessons of elite sport — focus, teamwork, and resilience under pressure — can be applied beyond the court, helping leaders, teams, and individuals perform at their very best. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. Comedian Meg Jager joins me for one of the funniest and most insightful episodes yet. We dive into autism, anxiety, anger, identity, dating, chaotic life choices, unhinged DMs and why only boring people get bored.Meg opens up about discovering she's autistic in adulthood, how that reframed her entire life (including realising she was bullied without knowing), and why her autism actually protected her. We also explore OCD, everyday rage, Melbourne tram etiquette, mental health as physical health, antidepressants, grief, burnout and the strangely calming world of pimple-popping videos. And of course… we expose some of Meg's wildest DMs — from unsolicited “confessions of love” to sour reactions when she doesn't reply. The parasocial relationships are real.If you love episodes about autism, mental health, dating, feminism, comedy, boundaries and modern adulthood, this one is for you.Autism in adulthood & the moment everything “clicked”Why Meg thought her bullies were confusing her with another MegOCD, anxiety & the physical symptoms no one talks aboutEveryday rage & Melbourne's complete lack of spatial awarenessWhy some people get bored — and why Meg never doesThe mental load on women vs men's learned helplessnessParasocial DMs & men treating comedy like HingeBoundaries, love languages & being misunderstoodWeight, antidepressants & navigating burnoutGrief, family, community & the butterfly effect

It's that time of year…time for some big tasty turkels, delicious side dishes, and a nice tryptophan induced nod after feasting yourself into fullness and naptime. It's THANKSGIVING, and while most folks are gearing up for the coming holiday season (which will start promptly in the pre-dawn hours of Black Friday), we realize that we've NEVER taken any time off during the holidays and that perhaps it's time we enjoy a little holiday breather. With that in mind, we've put together a veritable cornucopia of clips from our 2025 collection that we hope you enjoy. Our only real cautionary advisory would be that you listen to this prior to enjoying your Turkey Day feast in order to avoid the very real possibility of laughing until you vomit. Happy Thanksgiving to all!!! Enjoy your Thanksgiving Day feast, prep carefully if you're deep frying a turkey, be thankful and gracious for the lack of giblets in your gravy, and enjoy an abundance of relaxers before dinner with the family when you JOIN US for the most off-putting, irresponsible, and exhausting VACATION TAPES you've ever heard. “I've been thinking about it for a while… It was pretty apparent. I think because I'm very happy with how my career went, it made the decision easy. Realizing that I'm not in the mix for making teams anymore, I didn't want to keep running just to try to make USAs year in, year out. I felt good about everything and it felt like the right time.”Evan Jager, a two-time Olympian for Team USA, is ending his professional track career at the age of 36. Jager is the most decorated U.S. steeplechaser in history, winning Olympic bronze in 2016 and World silver in 2017 along with seven straight national titles from 2012 to 2018. Jager's 8:00.45 personal best, set in 2015, is the American record and he owns nine of the ten fastest marks on the U.S. all-time list. After years of injuries, Jager was able to make one last World team in 2022 and finished fourth at last year's Olympic Trials. Jager discussed his long, storied career in an Exit Interview with Chris Chavez.____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Evan Jager | @evanjager on InstagramProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on Instagram____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSNOMIO: Made with 80% broccoli sprout juice, 15% lemon juice, and 5% sugar, Nomio activates your body's natural defense systems to reduce lactate, speed recovery, and enhance muscle adaptation. From American-record brilliance to a late-career grind, Evan Jager's story has been one of constant adaptation. But now he's ready to call it quits and move onto the next phase of life without running. The late-career push included an 8th place finish in the men's 3000m steeplechase at the U.S. Championships in 8:28.21 this year. He also ran the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile in September of this year and came in 19th with a 3:54.9. Jager originally made a name for himself when he set the 3000m Steeplechase American Record in July of 2015 with a 8:00.45. His other PRs include 13:02.40 in the 5,000m; 7:35.16 in the 3,000m; and 3:32.97 in the 1,500m. After one year in the NCAA ranks as a Wisconsin Badger (he came in 8th in the 1,500m at outdoors during the 2008 season), Jager turned professional. He then went on to win seven consecutive U.S. steeplechase titles from 2012–2018. He made his presence known on the world stage, grabbing a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Games in the 3000m steeplechase; prior to that he came in 6th at the 2012 London Games in the 3000m steeplechase. After a serious foot injury, Jager burst back on the scene in 2022, nabbing a second place finish at the 2022 USATF outdoor games.Check in as we unpack the peaks, valleys, and lasting legacy of one of America's most influential distance runners as he flips to the next professional chapter of his memorable career.
