The Rickey Smiley Morning Show broadcasted live from Cincinnati’s iconic Music Festival, bringing listeners a mix of entertainment news, celebrity interviews, and festival energy. The crew discussed a major egg recall affecting more than 1.5 million dozen eggs sold under brands including Kroger and Simple Truth due to potential salmonella contamination, with consumers urged to check carton codes before eating them. Adding to the entertainment headlines, the show reacted to news that Mathew Knowles says previously unreleased Destiny’s Child remixes featuring Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, and guest artists could arrive within the next month. The show also celebrated the return of the Cincinnati Music Festival, which organizers say attracts nearly 100,000 visitors and generates more than $100 million in economic impact for the city. Host Faith Daniels joined the crew to share memorable festival moments and discuss this year’s star-studded lineup, while viral country-rap sensation 803 Fresh stopped by to talk about the continued success of “Boots on the Ground,” his upcoming album, and his commitment to mentoring youth in his community. In this first part of a two episode conversation, Madi and Lor are sitting down with their good friend and fellow concert photographer James Coffman for a conversation that feels equal parts origin story, industry deep dive, and blueprint for breaking into touring. James opens up about growing up as the resident emo kid in a small Texas town, how his brother shaped his early music taste, and why he originally thought he would become a musician before a chance encounter at a So What?! Music Fest documentary screening unexpectedly led to his first real photo pass. The three dive into the reality of building a career in live music, unpacking why “networking” feels disingenuous and what it actually looks like to build genuine community in an industry fueled by relationships. James shares how years in fraternities and corporate America unexpectedly prepared him for touring, why transparency and helping others matters more than gatekeeping, and how he approaches his work with intentional storytelling, creative growth, and a cinematic mindset, especially through his recent documentary style work with Counterparts. Whether you are dreaming of touring as a creative or simply curious about what happens behind the scenes, this episode is packed with honest insight, practical advice, and stories from someone who has truly earned his place in the industry.----------------------Follow All Things Backing The Barricade:https://www.backingthebarricade.com/https://www.instagram.com/backingthebarricade/https://www.tiktok.com/@backingthebarricade----------------------Follow Madi:https://www.instagram.com/earthtomadison/Follow Lor:https://www.instagram.com/lorealmichele/----------------------Follow James Coffman:https://www.instagram.com/jamescoffmanmedia/ https://www.jamescoffmanmedia.com/

Our guest today on the Working Songwriter hails from Oklahoma and is a foundational contributor to the uniquely American genre of Red Dirt music. Jason Boland released his first album, 'Pearl Snaps,' in 1998 and has been on the road ever since. Nightclub by nightclub, fan by fan, he's built a devoted national audience. He's toured with Turnpike Troubadours, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Reckless Kelly, and a host of others. He's recorded for Thirty Tigers and Top Hat Records. He's appeared at Stagecoach, Luck Reunion, and the MusicFest at Steamboat. 'Texas Monthly' called him "equal parts poet, rebel, and road warrior" and 'Rolling Stone' declared his sound "unpolished, unsparing, and deeply human." I got a chance a while back to catch up with Jason and hear about his musical journey so far. Interested in sponsoring us? Contact BGS: https://bit.ly/sponsorBGSpods

The conversation takes an extraordinary turn when Dawn recounts her once-in-a-lifetime experience winning a contest in 2002 that put her on the Rolling Stones' private jet, where she met and chatted with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and the late Charlie Watts. The band even played her favorite song, "Can't You Hear Me Knocking," at the Denver show the next night. Dawn also discusses her new role booking shows for Soraia, turning her passion for the band into a dream job that allows her to be part of their team.Steve brings the star power with his account of seeing Lady Gaga at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, which he ranks in his top 10 concerts of all time despite not being a superfan. He describes the show as mind-blowing, with incredible choreography, costume changes, and an intimate piano performance of "Die With a Smile" that transformed the energy of the 18,000-person venue. Steve also highlights seeing St. Vincent at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, praising her guitar skills and stage presence influenced by David Byrne, as well as catching Joan Jett with Alanis Morissette and being amazed at how Joan's voice hasn't changed over the decades. His Vegas weekend also included the Psychedelic Furs at House of Blues and Adele at Caesars Palace, making for an unforgettable concert trip.Andy rounds out the episode with his diverse concert year, starting with the mesmerizing guitar work of Mdou Moctar at The Space and a spontaneous third-row experience seeing Los Lobos and Los Lonely Boys at Hard Rock Gary. His spring break trip to Vegas delivered a surprise highlight when he caught Joe Russo's Almost Dead at Brooklyn Bowl, calling it his surprise concert of the year with their incredible double guitar attack. Andy also shares his Bonnaroo experience, seeing Neil Young perform his new song "Crime in the White House" at Meigs Field (where they unknowingly appeared in the music video), and attending Riot Fest to see Jack White and the Beach Boys with John Stamos. The episode wraps with the group discussing their most anticipated 2026 shows, including Iron Maiden, Radiohead, Guns N' Roses with Public Enemy and Ice Cube, and the long-awaited Rush reunion.BANDS: Adele, Alanis Morissette, Ashley Gavin (comedian), Beach Boys, The, Beaches, The, Billy Idol, Black Crows, The, Buddy Guy, Cocktail Slippers, The, Cure, The, Dead & Company, Dogs in a Pile, Florence and the Machine, Gary Numan, Grunge Worthy, Guns N' Roses, Ice Cube, Idiot Kids, The, Iron Maiden, Jesus and Mary Chain, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Joe Russo's Almost Dead, Lady Gaga, Lamp, Los Lobos, Los Lonely Boys, Lousekateers, The, Luke Combs, Marcus King, Mdou Moctar, Mighty Suicide Squirrels, The, Mogwai, Neil Young, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Otis and the Elevators, Pretenders, The, Psychedelic Furs, The, Public Enemy, Radiohead, Rolling Stones, The, Rush, Rush Tribute Project, Soraia, Sonic Youth, St. Vincent, Talking Heads, Typhoid Rosie, Yeah Yeah Yeahs.VENUES: Aragon Ballroom, Bonnaroo, Brooklyn Bowl, Caesars Palace, Crypto Center, Douglas Park, FM Kirby Center, Foxborough Stadium (Patriots Stadium), Garcia's, Hard Rock (Gary, Indiana), Hotel Figueroa, House of Blues (Las Vegas), JJ's Tavern (Florence, Massachusetts), Meigs Field, Metro, The, Music Fest (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania), Redwood Bar (Redwood Grill), Riot Fest, Salt Shed, The, Soldier Field, Space, The, Sphere, The, Tabernacle, The, T-Mobile Arena, United Center, Vic, The, World Music Theater, Zinzenplatz stage (at Music Fest).
