In this first part of a two episode conversation, Madi and Lor are sitting down with their good friend and fellow concert photographer James Coffman for a conversation that feels equal parts origin story, industry deep dive, and blueprint for breaking into touring. James opens up about growing up as the resident emo kid in a small Texas town, how his brother shaped his early music taste, and why he originally thought he would become a musician before a chance encounter at a So What?! Music Fest documentary screening unexpectedly led to his first real photo pass. The three dive into the reality of building a career in live music, unpacking why “networking” feels disingenuous and what it actually looks like to build genuine community in an industry fueled by relationships. James shares how years in fraternities and corporate America unexpectedly prepared him for touring, why transparency and helping others matters more than gatekeeping, and how he approaches his work with intentional storytelling, creative growth, and a cinematic mindset, especially through his recent documentary style work with Counterparts. Whether you are dreaming of touring as a creative or simply curious about what happens behind the scenes, this episode is packed with honest insight, practical advice, and stories from someone who has truly earned his place in the industry.----------------------Follow All Things Backing The Barricade:https://www.backingthebarricade.com/https://www.instagram.com/backingthebarricade/https://www.tiktok.com/@backingthebarricade----------------------Follow Madi:https://www.instagram.com/earthtomadison/Follow Lor:https://www.instagram.com/lorealmichele/----------------------Follow James Coffman:https://www.instagram.com/jamescoffmanmedia/ https://www.jamescoffmanmedia.com/

From high-speed highways to the halls of justice, Episode 263 of Beer, Blues, and BS is a cross-country journey through the strange and the sublime. While J.S. Gunslinger battles a 70-mile stretch to Sioux Falls fueled by melon-flavored Monster, the rest of the crew dives into a massive legal victory for home distillers and the landmark antitrust verdict against the Live Nation/Ticketmaster monopoly. Our guest today on the Working Songwriter hails from Oklahoma and is a foundational contributor to the uniquely American genre of Red Dirt music. Jason Boland released his first album, 'Pearl Snaps,' in 1998 and has been on the road ever since. Nightclub by nightclub, fan by fan, he's built a devoted national audience. He's toured with Turnpike Troubadours, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Reckless Kelly, and a host of others. He's recorded for Thirty Tigers and Top Hat Records. He's appeared at Stagecoach, Luck Reunion, and the MusicFest at Steamboat. 'Texas Monthly' called him "equal parts poet, rebel, and road warrior" and 'Rolling Stone' declared his sound "unpolished, unsparing, and deeply human." I got a chance a while back to catch up with Jason and hear about his musical journey so far. Interested in sponsoring us? Contact BGS: https://bit.ly/sponsorBGSpods

This coming January, more precisely, January 5th – 10th, 2026, the 40th Steamboat MusicFest will take place. MusicFest has been described as “The Superbowl of Texas Music”, and anyone who's ever been would say that's an accurate statement. In this episode Carly and Pete were able to visit with the founder and creator of this incredible event, Mr. John Dickson. John recounts how he first got the idea to create such a unique festival and how it has grown to be universally regarded as the Best of the Best of Texas / Red Dirt Music Festivals. If you've never been to a MusicFest in Steamboat Springs, CO, and you're a fan of this kind of music, it certainly needs to be on your bucket list. Attendees of MusicFest will see their favorite musicians perform in various settings from intimate bars and huge outdoor stages at the base of the mountain, to the “Largest Dancehall in Colorado” – a climate-controlled tent brought in especially for MusicFest, that can hold 3,000 people! Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, August 27th and reservations can be made by clicking this LINK. And you better get on it early because the festival sells out every year! Packages include access to all musical performances, lodging, lift tickets, ski rentals and more!
