Another week, another episode of Just A Bit Outside! The coaching carousel of the NHL continues, as more head coaches bit the dust this week. While some were performance related, one is shrouded in mystery. Are more revelations coming, and will more people lose jobs over it? What is the end result going to be? The Canucks had a quiet week with only two games, with two different results. Should there be any panic with some recent trends? Is it right to criticize certain players for merely average performances? How are things in Utica? Is a roster crunch coming this season in Vancouver as a result? We also go around the NFL, as the Seahawks had it handed to them by the Rams. Do they still have a shot at the division title? Can they overcome a key injury loss? What about the 49ers and another game of the year candidate? We look ahead to some great divisional matches coming up, as well as our best and worst in Garbage Time!
This week in anguish: - The actual hockey this week was pretty miserable, but the Canucks for Kids telethon is coming up and Ardella investigates whether the Canucks and Vancouver are as charitable as we feel like they/we are. The results are…not stellar. - The realistic options for this year’s trade deadline range from mediocre to disastrous, so Tristan retreats into trade deadlines past to see how much of a role they played in constructing championship-calibre teams in ’94 and ’11. - Adrian Aucoin teaches us how to treat our current enigmatic Russian with tales of Bure and Mogilny, and gives Tristan a new fantasy scenario for Tryamkin’s triumphant return. - We go clambering up Newell Brown’s family tree in this week’s How Did I Not Know That? Thanks for listening! If you liked the show, tell a friend. You can find us on Twitter as @thisweektristan and @thisweekardella.
Canucks GM Jim Benning says another year in OHL wouldn't hurt Olli Juolevi, but also says he's intrigued to see how Olli looks at camp, given his added strength. Benning says Newell Brown is a big supporter of Alex Burmistrov, he expects Michael Del Zotto to help the power play, and the Canucks are likely done adding in free agency
Ben Kuzma of the Province Sports suggests Newell Brown will have a strong effect on the Canucks stagnant power play, citing Brown’s past success in doing so. Kuz thinks the Canucks will protect Brandon Sutter in the expansion draft, suggesting the Canucks are far too thin down the middle to lose him.
Canucks assistant coach Newell Brown joined the show.
Canucks assistant coach Newell Brown says the Sedins are still “awesome power play guys” and suggests the Twins, along with Markus Granlund, Sven Baertschi, Bo Horvat should be able to produce at a better clip on the PP. Brown suggests using Brandon Sutter as a right-shot presence, and admits he needs to figure out which defenseman to use.
