Our Chris Gawlik reports on VGK's Captain's Skate at City National. He tells us Jonathan Marchessault was the only frontline player that hasn't reported yet. He showed us video of Jack Eichel doing drills and he told us that Eichel has been skating with Pavel Dorofeyev a lot and working with him on some drills. Max Comtois has impressed Chris so far. And, Phil Kessel, who Chris said could wind up in Minnesota, came out for a friendly skate. The goalie competition began officially with Logan Thompson battling Adin Hill hard in practice. We also provide updates on Brendon Brisson and his path to, perhaps being Cassidy's first man up this season. We talk about Brisson's performance in the Rookie games and what improvements we have seen. And, we talk about other players that have impressed us through two rookie games. The boys are getting beyond hyped for the nearing fantasy hockey draft on the horizon in the NHL world. Meaning Flip and Steele begin their division by division breakdown of all the teams across the NHL. Kicking things off with a fantasy hockey preview of the Pacific Division and the top pieces you need on your team. Likely, the Pacific Division is the easiest to predict in terms of outcomes in the standings, but there still leaves a ton of intrigue in terms of fantasy hockey talent. Looking at such players on the rise as Eeli Tolvanen of the Seattle Kraken and of course, Matty Beniers who should see his numbers increase across the fantasy board. You should also be paying attention to what should be the top-3 teams in the Pacific Division. The Vegas Golden Knights, Edmonton Oilers, and L.A. Kings will be the top three teams that makeup the top of this division. Pieces on Vegas you need to look at will be Jack Eichel and Adin Hill, as for the OIlers, fantasy hockey studs on the rise would be Stuart Skinner and Evan Bouchard, and as for the Kings, do not sleep on Arthur Kayliev and Adrian Kempe. 21 months later, we ask who is winning the Jack Eichel trade? Eichel was traded to VGK from Buffalo in exchange for Alex Tuch and Payton Krebs, plus each team received draft picks. Tuch wound up with 78 points last season including 35 goals. Krebs is a project and he scored 26 points in 74 games. Eichel is still hoping for a breakout season in Las Vegas. If he hadn't won a Cup with VGK, this would probably be an even trade. Over 600 fans voted and 97% said VGK has won the trade already, but mostly based it on the Golden Knights and Eichel winning the Stanley Cup. Eichel took just three shots per game and has turned into a solid two-way player. He also played a career low 18:46 minutes per game. We discuss VGKs new streaming contract and we tell you where the Stanley Cup has been as player visits continue. FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. First online real money wager only. Jack Eichel said on the Missin Curfew podcast last week that the Wives and Girlfriends (WAGS) of VGK players got a little ahead of themselves when they started to plan for a victory celebration before Game 5 of the Western Conference Final against Dallas. He said planning was already starting for the players and where they would celebrate. "They were saying "are we gonna do this or that after the game." It might have been a distraction as VGK lost to Dallas 4-2 and the series shifted back to Dallas. "That stuff kinda bothers me. Let's focus on winning" Eichel added. He said when the Golden Knights were ready to wrap up the Stanley Cup series against Florida in Game 5, he told the team: "I don't want to hear a word about what's gonna happen after this game until Game Five is over." He told the team to worry about taking care of business and then they could celebrate with a win. Eichel also talked about how close his team was, saying "you get to the point where you care about the guy next to you more than yourself." Also on the show... Misha Donskov winds up in Dallas with his former boss Peter DeBoer. And the Cup visits Calgary with goalies Logan Thompson and Adin Hill. FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. Appearing on the Cam and Strick podcast this week, VGK head coach Bruce Cassidy said Jack Eichel winning the Stanley Cup should elevate his game and career. Cassidy said Eichel's two-way game improved a lot this past season. Eichel was told by Cassidy that he would play fewer minutes before the season, due to Cassidy's system and a system that rolls four lines. Eichel gave up a lot of his minutes and his offensive game to become a better defender. Cassidy added that Eichel needs to improve in some areas, including the faceoff circle where he won just 45% of his draws, if he wants to win the Selke Award. Eichel also might earn some minutes this season on the penalty kill. Cassidy also said he 'did cartwheels" when his former employer, Boston, was eliminated in the playoffs. He talked about Chandler Stephenson being one of the most underrated players in the league, and Ivan Barbeshev's playoff contributions. On this edition we also compare the contracts of goalies Adin Hill and Jeremy Swayman, we track the Stanley Cup visits, and we talk about the VGK road trip starting later this month. Remember those comments by Max Pacioretty when he was traded from VGK to Carolina, you know the ones where he claimed it was a "country club" environment in Las Vegas and the team lack accountability? Well those comments resonated with Bruce Cassidy, as he told Boston Hockey Now this week. He said as a result, a few things were tightened up on the ice. He said he held the team accountable and held the team to "a standard away from the puck." Cassidy talked about a range of topics in the interview from a meeting with Jack Eichel in which he said they would win or lose together to the goalie situation to his day with the Cup. We also covered the NHL Rookie Face-off coming back to Las Vegas for the first time since 2018. Games will feature six teams, including VGK, scheduled for September 15-18 at both City National and The Dollar Loan Center. We also track where the Stanley Cup has been this week. Our Chris Gawlik attended the Battle For Vegas softball game Saturday night, between the Golden Knights and Las Vegas Raiders. He was able to get in some questions in the media scrum. One of the questions was aimed at VGK goaltender Adin Hill who was asked if he's spoken to Logan Thompson about a potential competition for the net in preseason. Hill took the high road and said he and L.T. are good friends and they haven't even discussed next season yet. Chris also spoke to other notable players Reilly Smith, Nic Hague and Jack Eichel at the annual charity event. We discuss an article by Eric Cruickshank of The Hockey Writers that further illustrates even strength scoring by VGK in the playoffs. And, an emotional Stanley Cup visit to Brandon for Kelly McCrimmon, who remembers his late brother, Brad. FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. First online real money wager only. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by writer and sports media personality Joe Yerdon and they do a segment of "agree and disagree" where Patrick lays out a bunch of (mostly) Buffalo related sports takes and Joe explains why he agrees or disagrees with it. On the Buffalo Sabres side they go over whether Owen Power will be paired with Erik Johnson as his opening night defensive partner and if Power will get a long-term contract before the season begins in addition to statements involving Victor Olofsson, Matthew Savoie and Jack Eichel. They then switch to football and topics including the Bills winning the AFC east again, if the division is better than the NFC east and if the Bills should be considered overrated if they don't go further in the NFL playoffs than they have the past two years. The guys also spend some time talking Sabres TV host Brian Duff, DeAndre Hopkins going to the Tennessee Titans, Don Mattingly and much more. Misfit Reilly Smith who was with the Golden Knights since Day 1, was traded to the Pirrsburgh Penguins Wednesday in exchange for a 2024 3rd round draft pick. That move clear enough cap space for VGK to sign top line winger Ivan Barbeshev to a five-year $5-million AAV contract. Barbeshev scored 18 points including 7 goals in the playoffs for VGK and fit in with the top line, almost immediately. He was the missing piece on the line with Jack Eichel and Jonathan Marchessault. Smith scored 26 goals in the regular season. He was signed to an extension last year. GM Kelly McCrimmon said he is trying no to bring in any players from the outside. He said he wants to keep this roster together as much as possible. We also talked about why Adin Hill hasn't signed his reported contract extension. And, according to reports Tuesday night, teams hve been inquiring about Logan Thompson. Could there be a goalie contraversy brewing? Who's crease is it? And we tell you about the VGK lone draft pick on Wednesday, David Edstrum, a 6-3 Swedish center. He is who VGK wanted to draft, according to Kevin Weekes. FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states.
