lberga, Hahn and Meaney discuss the MVP-caliber start for Jack Eichel, injury to Mark Stone and the impact of the Carter Hart signing on the Vegas Golden Knights and fantasy value of Adin Hill with Hart eligible to play Dec. 1. Jensen joins to discuss the top fantasy pickups on NHL.com/Fantasy, including three Buffalo Sabres players, Leo Carlsson's role under coach Joel Quenneville, a revitalized Brent Burns with the Avalanche and more. Then, in “On the Money,” presented by Bet365.ca, the guys attack various sides and prop angles for the first few days of the week.
Jonathan Toews scores his first as a Jet and shows he’s still got plenty left in the tank, while Mark Scheifele looks like a man on a mission to make Team Canada. In Vegas, Jack Eichel’s new contract hasn’t slowed him down one bit—he’s leading the league in points as the Golden Knights roll to the top of the Pacific. Vancouver’s dealing with tough injury news as Filip Chytil lands in concussion protocol after a heavy (and possibly late) Tom Wilson hit, and with Lekkerimäki also sidelined, the Canucks may be forced to hunt for centre help. In Toronto, Easton Cowan sits while Max Domi gets a top-line look, and goalie Anthony Stolarz’s public comments about defensive lapses & effort spark some chatter in the room. Meanwhile, in Edmonton, the Oilers head into Ottawa suffering through another sluggish start to a season, with Evan Bouchard struggling mightily and Connor McDavid looking surprisingly human so far. For over a decade, the Buffalo Sabres have been the poster child for NHL frustration — a team full of potential, yet constantly falling short. In this episode, Kenny dives headfirst into the chaos that has plagued the franchise: poor management decisions, inconsistent coaching, draft busts, and the psychological toll on the fanbase. Why can't the Sabres escape the rebuild phase? What went wrong after the Jack Eichel era? Is there any light at the end of the tunnel, or are fans doomed to keep hearing “next year” forever? From ownership dysfunction to the revolving door of front office personnel, this episode breaks down the root causes of Buffalo's seemingly never-ending rebuild and whether there's still hope for a turnaround. Kenny The Sports Guy explains.

Later on, Dan and Shawn react to Carolina's additions of Nikolaj Ehlers via free agency and K'Andre Miller via trade, and whether this offseason's new additions will help the Hurricanes take the next step and surpass the Panthers in 2025-2026. The guys also call out a few Eastern Conference teams who have disappointed with their lack of action this offseason. Dan and Shawn wrap the show by discussing the game-changing news of projected 2026 No. 1 pick Gavin McKenna's decision to leave the CHL and play college hockey at Penn State.
Steve Yzerman has spoken as NHL Free Agency Frenzy has come to a close...but does that mean the Detroit Red Wings are done making moves? Tune in as we discuss what Steve Yzerman told the media about not getting a chance to pitch free agents like Marner or Ehlers to come to Hockeytown, the Detroit Red Wings' interest in Marchment, Arvidsson, and others, who could step into the top 6 alongside Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Marco Kasper, Patrick Kane, and Alex DeBrincat (Soderblom or Berggen, or trade for Rust or Rakell?), whether a trade is the best route (Bowen Byram? Rasmus Andersson? Erik Karlsson?) to get a top 4 defenseman alongside Mortiz Seider, Simon Edvinsson, and Albert Johansson, how much of a difference the John Gibson & Cam Talbot tandem can make, & more. Also, Christian Fischer's retirement from the NHL (4:25)! After that, we take a look at potential 2026 NHL free agents, including Connor McDavid, Kirill Kaprizov, Kyle Connor, Jack Eichel, & many more big names and whether they could potentially be targets for Steve Yzerman & the Detroit Red Wings (plus notes on Mason McTavish, Nikolaj Ehlers, and Orlov) (35:10) before jumping into the new agreement between the NHL & NHLPA, and what the updated CBA has in store for the league's rules (45:25). All of that & plenty more before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment (1:09:50) - enjoy! A number of pre-deadline trades and signings took a little bit of the shine off of July 1, but the Rangers and Hurricanes swung a big deal that saw K'Andre Miller head to Carolina and then sign a big extension. Can Mitch Marner follow in Jack Eichel's path to finding another level to his game in Las Vegas? The Maple Leafs extended Matthew Knies and made a couple of trades but, much like Edmonton, they are left looking for scoring help to round out their top 6 forwards. The Edmonton Oilers cleared some cap space but also lost a number of players from last season without making a splash on Canada Day. The Vancouver Canucks surprised many by re-signing top UFA Brock Boeser, but some other moves may need to follow as they have a very crowded crease.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The San Jose Hockey Now Podcast is sponsored by Bring Hockey Back! Hello from Buffalo! Sheng is at the Draft Combine and we talk about what the San Jose Sharks can learn from the Buffalo Sabres' forever rebuild with Bill Hoppe. Hoppe has covered the Sabres since 2002, check out his work at Buffalo Hockey Beat! (43:38) But before we chat with Bill, Keegan and Sheng talk about Sam Dickinson and Kasper Halttunen winning the Memorial Cup, and the increased chatter about Dickinson making the San Jose Sharks full-time next year. (05:30) Why was a one-year contract for Shakir Mukhamadullin ideal for both sides? But could the Sharks regret it? (10:55) William Eklund and the San Jose Sharks have begun contract extension talks. Why is that a good sign? (15:00) With the Dallas Stars getting eliminated, we know the Sharks have the No. 30 pick of the 2025 Draft. What's the latest Combine gossip? (22:30) And now, Bill! (43:38) Looking back at the 14 years out of the playoffs, what can the San Jose Sharks learn about what not to do in a rebuild from the Buffalo Sabres? (50:40) What went wrong in the Jack Eichel era? Before Eichel was drafted in 2015, the Sabres had missed the playoffs with more competitive teams…what went wrong there? (59:30) How did the Sabres lose Sam Reinhart's loyalty? Breaking down the Sabres' 14 years in the wilderness, the first stage out of the playoffs was the last stages of an older, formerly winning team…the second stage was the Eichel era…the third era of the rebuild was post-Eichel and Reinhart, the Kevyn Adams era. How does Bill see the San Jose Sharks' rebuild coming along? (1:17:30) Speaking of the Sabres today, what's going on with defenseman Bo Byram? Why did Buffalo put him on the trade block? (1:30:10) Is there a chance that defensemen Rasmus Dahlin or Owen Power could be made available? (1:37:10) What would the Sabres want in a trade for a Byram, are the San Jose Sharks a good trade partner? What's the importance of stability in management and behind the bench? Bill thinks Mike Grier is the man for the Sharks' job…if they stick with him.
