This is the real March Madness. Donald Trump has continued to disgrace America—underscored most vividly by his White House meeting with Zelensky last week. And in the tumultuous days of betrayal that have followed. And it's been one crazy hit after another from fights with Canada to the firing of veterans nationwide. While the Democrats continue to scramble and scatter. As your newsfeed overflows, and your stomach turns, we're here to help you prioritize, analyze and make sense of it. Cutting through the partisan chatter and cable news monotony. With a cool-headed, no BS view of all the chaos. And a powerful guest that brings an honorable and clear voice to all of it. He's a Navy combat veteran, former fighter pilot, former Astronaut, and senior Senator from Arizona, Mark Kelly. He's a Democrat. But he doesn't sound like other Democrats. And he's hitting back hard on Elon Musk's plan for space, Trump's selling out of Ukraine, DOGE's new focus on firing vets and more. Maybe most importantly, he's a respectful and respected leader that our kids can look up. He's also the guy our host, Paul Rieckhoff, suggested Kamala Harris pick for VP if she wanted to capture more independent voters. And he's finally here on Independent Americans. State Senator Elena Parent - someone who's been on this show on two occasions; someone I'm awful fond of, politically - didn't have her best moment on a live Instagram Q&A with a trans parent and constituent recently. With me to discuss, another trans parent and activist, Clare Schexnyder., founder/CEO of Oh Baby! Fitness. It's not that I don't get what Sen. Parent is saying - that the party's defending of trans rights' issues at every turn is unpopular and thus, they ought not defend every area under right wing attack (notably sports participation and medical care while in prison) - it's that this posture has more to do with the party's inability to speak plainly to voters that personal and civil rights aren't supposed to BE up for debate (“mind your damned business,” anyone?) and that the Constitution clearly protects the rights of the imprisoned needing medical care, too. She's a lawyer; she knows this. I'm hoping this moment will sharpen her for bigger opportunities that may lay ahead for her, but her interview gaffes were a hard listen. I don't see an Elena Parent pivoting towards a moderate/centrist future route, but Third Way Democrats sure seem intent to push the party itself (againnnnn) back to the center, after a recent (err) "retreat." They want to get “out of elite circles and into real communities” like ... gun shows" ... "while simultaneously urging the party to “move away from the dominance of small-dollar donors." They contradict themselves.Even worse, it seems they're more than eager to draw in the "big tent" and willingly leave "fringe" folks outside of it, because that'll somehow secure more votes? This air of exclusionism from the supposed "left" is a dangerous trend to see evidence of. All so unnecessary if they party would just get better - Elena Parent included - at messaging their platform and values. ------There's nothing DOGE-y about spending untold millions changing military base names just to undo the erasure of Confederate troop/leader names, especially when all that's being done is scoring cheap MAGA points at the expense of those who'd been honored by the name changes in the first place, but it's PEAK MAGA!That's the case as this time, Fort Moore (name for Hal & Julie Moore) was renamed Fort Benning - only a different "Benning" since it's currently against the law to name anything federal after Confederate militarymen or leaders. For now, anyway."Those who advocate for changing the name to honor a person solely because they happen to be named 'Benning' ignore the values and character of Hal and Julie Moore as well as their courage, competency, and dedication to the nation and Army families." - Steve Moore, son of Hal & Julie Moore, whose name for two years were affixed to that of the west Georgia Army base now (as before) named Fort Benning.

The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the seventy-fifth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Task Force Senior for the BDE Command & Control (BCT HQ), LTC Timothy Price on behalf of the Commander of Ops Group (COG). Today's guest is the Brigade Commander for 2nd Mobile Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), COL James Stultz. The 2nd Mobile Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), which was activated on 1 July 1941 at Ft. Benning (now Ft. Moore), GA. The MBCT draws its infantry battalions primarily from the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment. 2nd MBCT is the Army's first mobile BCT construct. As their designation implies, they're focused on increasing a brigade's overall mobility and with it the agility and flexibility that it provides. They have the Hollywood call-sign of “Strike,” but commonly called “Five oh Duece,” and the motto of “Strike.” (The rest of the motto is “I fight where I am told, and win where I fight.”) They are easily identified by the black heart patches on their helmets dating back to preparation for the invasion of France in World War II and have been known by the enemy as the “Black Hearts Brigade.” In this episode, we discuss several emerging key lessons, particularly regarding the importance of Transition in Contact (TiC) and the evolving nature of command and control (C2Fix). TiC was highlighted as a critical skill, requiring seamless coordination between the brigade and its multifunctional reconnaissance companies (MFRC) and multi-purpose companies (MPCs), which replaced the traditional anti-tank and heavy weapons companies. These units provided vital intelligence and protection in the deep area, using scout snipers, electronic warfare sections, and anti-air capabilities. However, there were challenges in maintaining a balance between reconnaissance and target acquisition, illustrating the need for constant refinement in how these specialized companies are employed. The introduction of the MFRC and other multifunctional units demonstrated the Army's shift towards more flexible, mobile brigades capable of long-range operations, especially through the use of large-scale air assaults (L2A2). In addition to TiC, the exercise reinforced the importance of mastering logistics and communications across multiple domains to support Army modernization efforts. Logistics played a critical role in enabling mobility, especially as light infantry units integrated vehicles like the infantry squad vehicle (ISV), providing new tactical opportunities but requiring extensive training. Effective communications were essential for synchronizing complex operations, particularly in the context of C2Fix, where brigades aimed to reduce their physical footprint and rely more on higher echelons for intelligence processing. Mastery of “brilliance in the basics,” such as security, camouflage, and decentralized command structures, proved essential in navigating these transitions and ensuring brigade effectiveness in large-scale combat operations (LSCO). These insights provide a roadmap for future improvements in integrating modern capabilities while maintaining a focus on foundational warfighting skills. In Episode 10 of Ninety-Pound Rucksack, host Christian Beckwith explores how John McCown and his fellow citizen-soldiers overcame traditional military doctrine to prepare for mountain warfare—and in the process, reshaped the Old Army into one of the mightiest forces the world had ever known. Show Notes and Resources: www.christianbeckwith.com The episode includes interviews with Ninety-Pound Rucksack Advisory Board Members: Lance R. Blyth: Command Historian of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM); Adjunct Professor of History at the United States Air Force Academy. David Little: “living historian” for the Tenth Mountain Division Foundation. Sepp Scanlin: military historian and museum professional; served as the 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum Museum's Museum Director. Key Points: The draft and the enlistment of citizen soldiers changed the US Army from a rigid, authoritarian, all-volunteer institution into one of the mightiest forces the world had ever known. The development of Officer Candidate School (OCS) created an industrial-style assembly line that produced junior leaders to lead the citizen army into combat. The innovative Junior Officers' Plan, which was developed to train officers for the mountain troops and then return them to the unit, preserved institutional knowledge critical to the mountain troops' ability to fight in cold weather and mountainous terrain. A specialized division designed to fight in extreme conditions had to adapt the Army's standard flatland, warm-weather military strategies to mountain warfare. Featured Segments: A vivid recreation of a conversation between John McCown and his peers at Ft. Benning, Georgia, highlighting: their takeaways from Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union and the impact of winter on his army's defeat their frustrations with traditional Army tactics and its inability to recognize the importance of specialized training their resolve to embody the change they knew the mountain troops would need in order to fulfill its mandate An overview of the Army's transformation from an all-volunteer force into one led by citizen-soldiers like John McCown. Detailed analyses of Officer Candidate School, the Junior Officers Plan and the need for a purpose-built encampment for the mountain troops. The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the fifty-seventh episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Commander of Ops Group (COG), COL Matthew Hardman. Today's guest is the Commanding General of the Maneuver Center of Excellence, MG Curtis Buzzard. The Maneuver Center of Excellence was established in September 2011 when the US Army Armor Center and School moved from Ft. Knox, KY to Ft. Benning, GA (now Ft. Moore) in addition to the US Army Infantry Center and School. Fort Moore supports more than 120,000 active-duty military, family members, reserve component soldiers, retirees and civilian employees on a daily basis. Established in 1918 as Camp Benning and in 1922 Camp Benning became Fort Benning. In 2023 the name was changed to honor LTG Hal Moore and his wife Julia Compton Moore. In this episode we focus on training and leader development, an area that the Maneuver Center of Excellence (MCoE) specializes in as it offers over 60 courses, ranging from Basic Combat Training to Ranger School to the Maneuver Captain's Career Course (MCCC). We also discuss some of the modernization efforts being undertaken as the MCoE is the proponent for force modernization for brigade and below formations. Specifically discussed is the deliberate refocusing on brilliance of the basics of small unit tactics, seen especially during Infantry, armor, and cavalry soldiers' One Station Unit Training that combines basic training with advanced individual training for a twenty-two-week program. Over the last two years, MCoE has striven to incorporate emerging trends and technologies into their courses offered so that Soldiers and leaders alike are able to successfully fight and win any conflict that the US finds itself in tomorrow. This includes incorporating the employment of small UAS and basic EW capabilities into OSUT as well as having guest speakers from current ongoing conflicts at MCCC. Shockwaves reverberate through Nashville as Blaise A. Taylor, a former member of the Tennessee Titans staff, faces two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the tragic poisoning deaths of Jade Benning and her unborn child. Taylor's arrest, orchestrated by Deputy United States Marshals in Utah, follows a grand jury indictment issued in Nashville. Jade Benning's untimely demise occurred under harrowing circumstances, marking a grim milestone on her 25th birthday. Rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center on the night of February 25, 2023, Benning's condition deteriorated rapidly, culminating in her tragic passing. Tragically, her unborn fetus also succumbed to the poisoning on February 27, 2023, amplifying the magnitude of the tragedy. According to reports, Blaise A. Taylor, alleged to be the father of Benning's unborn child, telephoned emergency services on the night of February 25, expressing concern over what appeared to be an allergic reaction suffered by Benning. However, investigations spearheaded by homicide unit detective Adam Reese unveiled a chilling narrative of alleged poisoning. Months of meticulous investigation, involving collaboration between homicide detectives, forensic scientists, and medical professionals, culminated in Wednesday's indictment against Taylor. The former defensive analyst with the Utah State University football team in 2023 swiftly relocated to Utah following the deaths, but the long arm of justice has finally caught up with him. "We have been tirelessly working to bring closure to the tragic loss of Jade Benning and her unborn child," remarked Detective Adam Reese, highlighting the relentless pursuit of justice in this case. Authorities indicate that Taylor is alleged to have administered the fatal poison to Benning without her knowledge during a visit to her Lebanon Pike apartment on the fateful night of February 25, 2023. The indictment, charging him with two counts of first-degree murder, underscores the severity of the allegations levied against him. Efforts are now underway to facilitate Taylor's extradition from Utah to Nashville, where he will face legal proceedings for his alleged involvement in the deaths of Benning and her unborn child. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department affirms its commitment to working in tandem with Utah authorities to ensure swift and just resolution in this tragic case. As the legal process unfolds, the community grapples with the profound implications of this disturbing tragedy, prompting reflection on the fragility of life and the imperative of holding perpetrators of heinous crimes accountable. With the spotlight now on Taylor, Nashville awaits the dispelling of shadows cast by this heart-wrenching episode, yearning for closure and justice for the lives lost.
