We're back—and now streaming on hockeyhotstove.com! In this episode, we break down the highs, lows, and head-scratchers of the Leafs' playoff performance, as they are in the thick of it versus the Florida Panthers in this 2nd round series. Joseph Woll has been thrown into the fire with a tough goaltending assignment, while the team continues to struggle with scoring in key moments. Penalties sure disrupted the Leafs momentum in game 4, and Auston Matthews is getting heat despite his strong defensive play, but Tanev's toughness has been a game-changer—and we're here for it! The Leafs as a unit will need to take their cue from this tenacious D'man if they hope to come out on top in this now best of three showdown. We also shine a light on the community side of the game. We were delighted to have welcomed Ultimate Leafs Fan Mike Wilson on with us to talk about an important fundraising initiative he is championing in support of a cure for ALS; one that that hockey fans will definitely want to get involved with! Of course, while he was with us we also got his thoughts on the Leafs vs Panthers series, and chatted about his experiences following the Blue and White on the road. We could've talked to Mike for hours, as he has some incredible stories! The playoffs are all about momentum swings, and the Leafs have allowed the Panthers to get some. A quick start and taking our game to them will be the key to getting it back. Go Leafs Go! JD is joined by Ben Ennis, co-host of The FAN Morning Show (0:00) to discuss the latest reports from contract negotiations between pending free agent Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays. They debate the relative value of Vladdy compared to Juan Soto, how the optics around the team would improve with the slugger under contract ahead of Opening Day, whether to trust Guerrero Jr.'s durability over the long term, and how New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole being out for the year after Tommy John surgery impacts the outlook of the AL East. Later, JD and Ben shift their focus towards the Toronto Maple Leafs, whether tonight's matchup against the Florida Panthers is a measuring-stick game, and how close the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens are to becoming Toronto's biggest rival again. Afterwards, JD speaks with former all-star NHL blueliner Keith Yandle (50:00). The Spittin' Chiclets co-host shares why his former teammate, Scott Laughton, is well equipped to adjust quickly in Toronto, his reaction to Brad Marchand being traded to the Florida Panthers, and the growing number of NHL players willing to share their personality. The boys are comin' in hot today, talking about one of the finest power forwards in recent memory, the NASHER — Rick Nash! He plied his trade for a number of years in Columbus, playing for some really bad teams before moving onto the Big Apple, and then finishing up with a short stint in Beantown. We're firm believers that he probably would've hit the Hall if not for to many hits to the ol' noggin — a career cut short by concussions and other assorted injuries. Always answered the bell for Team Canada too — has half a dozen medals to prove it too! Thanks Nasher, you're a real beauty! Then we break down a really eventful trade deadline that saw more than 30 trades take place in the month of March alone! Mikko Rantanen's on the move again, Brad Marchand finds a new home that's fond of rats, and your Winnipeg Jets made a couple of slick moves to bring in some cagey vets, including show fav Brandon Tanev! Who won the deadline — we're here to tell ya! In our final segment, we're here to catch you up on the playoff picture, who's on the cusp and who's fading fast — plus we update you on the the Gr8 Chase, as Ovi gets closer to history!
Big moves at the deadline: Mikko Rantanen heads to the Dallas Stars with an 8-year extension, Colorado loads up with Brock Nelson, Charlie Coyle, and Ryan Lindgren, and Winnipeg adds grit with Schenn and Tanev. The Oilers spend Evander Kane’s cap space, the Leafs strategically bolster their roster, and the Bruins embrace a rebuild. Vancouver stands pat on Brock Boeser, while Ottawa shakes things up by swapping Josh Norris for Dylan Cozens. Plenty to unpack as teams gear up for the playoff push!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
