The Gnar Couch Podcast has returned after an involuntary hiatus due to being hacked and deleted. Cheef apologizes for himself and the crew to kick off the show. How the hack went down is explained. (Guess what? No one really cares and we're back, so the whole thing was pointless.) Cheef has to explain a joke to Rob. Still dumb. Still Awesome. Still Gnar Couch.

This week, we're legitimately live from the Book Shop, where we've already got the Christmas crackers out — even Thanksgiving crackers! — and things are heating up. But don't worry: This is just a regular discussion of the books we're reading, including the new Veronica Roth (chased off Twitter, but Hannah remains a fan), the discussion of which reminds Sam of "Andor" and "Station Eleven" and leads to a social media diatribe; a Greek mythology rehash Sam doesn't like much; more on why "The Golden Enclaves" is awesome; the genius behind the brand-new "Babel"; the new Claire Keegan, which is not a Christmas book but is awesome like "Small Things Like These" and makes a wonderful hostess gift; and a fun new murder mystery featuring real-life medical workers who've done evil things.
Having made the comment that he doesn't think that music streaming platforms represent a particularly lucrative opportunity for composers and songwriters, music producer Luke Jones, begins to lay out his opinions on alternative ways to monetise music. This involves him remembering a phone call from the year 2000 and explaining the awkward financial realities surrounding the cost of releasing music in the pre-streaming era. Why did 80's pop act “Frankie Goes to Hollywood” make so little money compared to music industry legend Kate Bush? Join Luke as he continues his mission, to demystify the business side of the music industry with anecdotes, real life examples and re-enacted phone calls with members of the music industry. Here are some links to things that Luke recommends in this series, including the excellent book “Exit Stage Left: The Curious Afterlife of Pop Stars” by Nick Duerden https://linktr.ee/whereisMYhitsinglepodcast ***** Hi, I'm your podcast host Luke Jones. Since Twister is celebrating its 25th anniversary, Tony and Newt decided to revisit it. In this Podcast / Movie Review they will talk about all the things that make it awesome. From the ground breaking special effects, the non stop action sequences, and the memorable performances by the late Bill Paxton and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. During the approach of the most powerful storm in decades, university professor Dr. Jo Harding (Helen Hunt) and an underfunded team of students prepare the prototype for Dorothy, a ground-breaking tornado data-gathering device conceived by her estranged husband, Bill (Bill Paxton). When Harding tells Bill that Dorothy is ready for testing -- and that their privately funded rival Dr. Jonas Miller (Cary Elwes) has stolen the idea and built his own -- Bill rejoins the team for one last mission.

We all think we are superheroes! We wear a red cape. We leap from tall tabletops. We climb trees, flex our biceps, do our power pose, chase down the bad guys, and save the world every afternoon. Because we are invincible when we are five years old. Nothing holds us back from thinking we are simply awesome! But somewhere along the way, we lost our sense of awesome because someone told us we weren’t awesome, or we fell, or failed, or just didn’t get the laughs or attention we were seeking.

Jeff Tim and Bobby talk Rambo, life, and the best of this week's comic books in another Rad Raptor Radio!
Our guest is the tall, eloquent, self confessed dork who writes for Film School Rejects, is host of the Still Awesome screening nights for the Alamo Drafthouse in Winchester, Virginia, is the co-host of the official podcast of the Alamo Drafthouse in Winchester, Virgina, The In the mouth of Dorkness podcast, is co-host, with his wife, of the Comic Book Couples Counseling podcast, is a world authority on William Shatner and Star Trek 5 and, more importantly than any of that gumph, his wife, Lisa, writes exceptionally well for the aftermoviediner.com, He knows his ninjas, he's confident about cult film, he's communicative about comic books and I bet he can also boils a mean egg, it's the one, and only, Brad Gullickson.
Cyd Zeigler, one of our co-founders, wrote an article about my guest in December. It was the first I heard of Jason Ellis. Since then I have taken in as much as possible. Listen to his show on Sirius XM, listened to his former podcast "High and Dry", read his first book "I'm Awesome" and his most recent "Still Awesome". Like we talk about the first few moments I even google imaged him and found photos of George Takei from Star Trek touching his penis. We talk about ALL of it in this one hour interview, including drug use, prostitution, sex with women and men and what it means to be a part of the LGBTQ community. While his evolution from straight guy to bi guy has been a long one, it has been a journey where he has had to learn. We talk about his old non-pc talk about trans men and women along the way. This episode is a fun one, if drug use, molestation discussion is a problem for you I recommend you skip this episode. However, if sex, drugs and rock and roll are your thing then you are going to want to listen. As my favorite podcast says, "My Dad Wrote A Porno", this episode has "all the good parts". Enjoy! I highly recommend you get his books. His latest can be found at jasonellisbook.com. It is probably better for him if you get it directly there, however, you can also find both books I mentioned on Amazon. An audible book is coming soon. We interrupt our regularly scheduled program to bring you a special road trip episode recorded on Brad's epic 40th Birthday. Don't worry, our Sex Criminals series will launch next week, but due to unforeseen b-day shenanigans, we had to pull an audible with this week's enthusiastic celebration of the essential 1998 comic book movie Blade, starring Wesley Snipes, written by David S. Goyer, and directed by Stephen Norrington. Our current landscape of superhero cinema simply would not be the same without Blade and the romantic relationship between Eric & Karen...well, definitely not without Blade. What a fascinating turn of events for a character that began as an antagonist for the most famous bloodsucker in Tomb of Dracula number 10, and all but faded from memory before his big-screen debut. The lowly RSS feed has been around a long time. More than 20 years to be exact. Originally dubbed RDF Site Summary—the RDF stood for Resource Description Framework, it was introduced in March 1999. It evolved into RSS, which now stands for either Rich Site Summary or my preference, Really Simple Syndication. It’s essentially a geeky way for websites to publish frequently updated information, such as blog entries, news headlines, or episodes of audio and video series like this very podcast you’re listening to. When publishers of content use RSS feeds, they allow anyone with an RSS reader to subscribe to their feed, so whenever they publish someone new it will automatically show up. Forget the techno-speak and just think of it as the ability to create your own virtual newspaper or magazine. You can literally subscribe to as many of these feeds as you want to, depending on your appetite for content. I blame Google for a big decline in the popularity of RSS, when they killed off their free Google Reader software in 2013. I guess they thought RSS wasn’t going to be around much longer, and wasn’t worth supporting. Personally, I adopted another product called Feedly and I’ve been happy with it ever since. I use their paid version which is $5 a month which I find well worth it. There are a bunch of other alternatives, such as one that I also use sometimes called Panda at usepanda.com. I subscribe to many business publications and blogs. I benefit from keeping up with relevant news and articles related to marketing, as well as topics specific to some of the industries my marketing clients serve. Feedly makes it easy to quickly scan through dozens of feeds. I do this regularly to bookmark useful headlines to read later or share on social media. I think most people in business can benefit from curating information pertinent to their role. RSS feeds are still a very effective way to do this, even if the technology seems a little dated.
At precisely 4:17 pm Eastern time tomorrow (July 20), it will have been 50 years since a spidery-looking American spacecraft named Eagle touched down on the surface of the Moon. Two hours earlier, Apollo 11 mission commander Neil Armstrong and Lieutenant “Buzz” Aldrin had left Colonel Michael Collins alone in their orbiting Command Module, as they began their powered descent to the Moon and to their indelible place in history.Armstrong and Aldrin set the Eagle down on a lunar plain called the Sea of Tranquillity in the nick of time. They had less than 30 seconds of fuel left by the time they touched down. Six hours later, Neil Armstrong emerged from the lunar module and slowly climbed down its metal ladder. With billions of people on earth watching live on TV or listening on the radio, Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the lunar surface, uttering those famous words: “That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.”Today on Midday, we discuss the legacy of Apollo 11’s triumphant mission to the moon with two distinguished chroniclers of America's space history: Tom's guests are Dr. John Logsdon, Professor Emeritus at George Washington University's Elliott School, and the founder and long-time director of its Space Policy Institute. He is also a former member of the NASA Advisory Council and its Exploration Committee. Dr. Logsdon joins us on the line from his office in Washington. And joining us on the line from the Hudson Valley in New York is filmmaker Robert Stone, the producer, writer and director of an extraordinary new documentary about America's decade-long race to Tranquility Base called Chasing the Moon. The documentary is currently streaming on PBS.org as part of its American Experience series. PBS will rebroadcast the entire 6-hour film on Saturday, July 20. Check your local listings.
The day after Roy Tuscany burst-fractured his T12 vertebrae in a skiing accident, the doctor who performed the eight-hour emergency operation that stabilized his spine came to his hospital room. Roy, eager to show appreciation, put his hand up to to give the surgeon a high-five. After a few awkward moments, the physician reciprocated—and Roy realized what a powerful, positive moment of connection he'd created. In the aftermath of his accident, Roy also found another source of positivity—the support of his family, friends and community. The Sugar Bowl Academy, the school for competitive skiers where he'd been teaching, started a fund that enabled him to focus on healing without worrying about finances. As Roy moved through recovery, he decided to repay this kindness by starting an organization that would offer the same gift to other injured athletes. Fittingly, he named it after the gesture of goodwill he'd since shared with nearly all his medical professionals. Now, more than 10 years later, the High Fives Foundation has disbursed more than $3 million in grants to 237 athletes from 32 states. Roy joined us today to discuss: How he first fell in love with skiing and how it became a part of what he calls his “ethos”: “The most beautiful way to travel is sliding on snow” How his accident happened, and how he nearly immediately made the decision to move forward with a new life instead of focusing on what he had lost The significance of the support he received as he recovered How integral adaptive sports were to his healing process—and how learning to ski again convinced him of the need for the High Fives Foundation, to give others access to the same resources What the organization does to provide connections and positivity to people facing difficult challenges: “When we can create community through sport, we are creating the strongest community possible” How High Fives works to create independent athletes—people who have the tools and knowledge to participate in their sport on their own terms and schedule The definition of athlete, per the High Fives Foundation: “anyone with a goal,” whether that's skiing with family again or returning to high levels of competition Athletes who exemplify the organization's mission, including Olympic ski jumper Nick Fairall and viral sit-ski sensation Trevor Kennison The positive changes that have occurred in his own life thanks to connecting with athletes like these His primary messages for others facing life-altering injuries: Find examples of positivity, set goals with your brain, use your heart to drive you toward them, and above all remember: “It'll never be the same, but it will be awesome” Resources/links we mention: The High Fives Foundation online, and on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter We hope you'll take a listen—you can subscribe wherever you get your podcasts, and if you like what you hear, please leave us a rating or a review in iTunes or Apple podcasts. Why would people want to outsource anything (including webinars)? Because they don’t have the resources, or because they simply want to have the peace of mind that there’s somebody out there that’s going to take responsibility for a task or solution. That’s the philosophy that Mike Agron took everywhere he went, from Apple to Oracle and eventually to his role as CEO of WebAttract. It became a natural way for him to organize his business. In this episode, Mike shares what led to his passion for webinars and makes a compelling case for why high-quality webinars should be near the top of the list of enduringly successful marketing strategies. Check out WebAttract’s ebook “WebinarReady” here. You can also download their Ultimate Planning Checklist, see their work, or learn about webinar best practices. The Relatively Speaking Podcast is here to help ease you into your workweek. Why? Because we have an unconditional love for our listeners, obviously. After bragging about being well above the .500 mark picking NFL games, some insights are discussed concerning the weekend's slate of games. To briefly highlight what is mentioned: The Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott, their offensive line, are all super awesome and we should worship Jerry Jones for being a genius. Tom Brady is not only still very much good looking, but he remains the best gunslinger in all of the National Football League. Are the Buffalo Bills good? Save for the Patriots, are there any other elite-level teams? And, of course, more! Bad Tweets returns this week. Joseph basically uses it as a platform to discuss the Nigel Hayes backlash even more... even though he wrote 2,000 words on it recently. Jared wants to discuss "The Heist of the Century" trade between the Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks! As for Absurd Questions, Joseph is interested in if Jared would drink a full gallon of creamer and Jared wants to know about eating food out of a can. It's complicated stuff, to be honest, so you just need to keep your ears open and listen. Be safe everyone. Don't text while driving -- or, for that matter, do advanced geometry while operating any form of vehicle. Follow Jared on the rough and tumble future-device known as Twitter @JMintzHoops. You can do a similar thing with Joseph, who can be found on the mean streets @JosephNardone.
