In this episode of the Immersive Audio Podcast, Oliver Kadel and Bjørn Jacobsen are joined by electronics engineer Ben Supper from London, UK. Ben Supper started Supperware in 2018, with the aim of making hardware and software to meet the needs of professional musicians and engineers who work with immersive audio. The challenge has been to meet their needs for high accuracy, speed, and as little impact on their budget as possible. The first product to reach general sale is a head tracker, without which there's no point making anything else. He has spent a total of twenty years working as a product engineer and occasional manager for ROLI, Focusrite, and others. Some products he's particularly proud of co-developing to include the ROLI Seaboard, and the Novation Launchpad and Mininova. Before most of this, Ben obtained a PhD in the field of spatial psychoacoustics from Surrey in 2005 and was a graduate of the Tonmeister course in 2000. It is Ben's dream to make immersive audio work commercially this time around, and not to frighten away those casual experimenters and distractible creatives on whom its commercial and artistic success will completely depend. In this episode, we dive deep into the topic of head-tracking for audio, and Ben expertly explains the advantages of using trackers for spatial sound and the process of making them. This set was played live at the Global Disco event at Jam House, Akita Japan in July 2018. Keeping with the theme of "disco," yet also being who I am, I took the mix in an electro direction (think more early 80's than 70's!) Everything was performed with an iPad Pro and Novation Launchpad. Specifically, my equipment used was:Software:1. Korg Gadget was used to program the bass and synth sounds in advance, tediously learning the various parts of the remixed tracks - such as the iconic bassline in Smooth Criminal (see below).2. Blocs Wave was where all the samples were imported to and arranged.3. Launchpad iOS was the destination of the samples after Blocs, where they could be mapped to the hardware controller and triggered. In addition to the various samples for the remixes, I loaded three full tracks (my own) to three pads and used them to fill out the set and transition between the live remixes.Hardware:1. iPad Pro2. The highly anticipated Panasonic GH5 has generated a soap opera of epic proportions. While an outstanding 4K video camera, the GH5's sub-par implementation of continuous autofocus and wonky image stabilization has many video pros very much consternated. In this episode I talk about these issues and give you my take on the drama surrounding the GH5. So, this was initially my submission for the Insomniac / Mixcloud-competition that just came and went. I didn't have enough time to make the deadline, but screw 'em. I'll play at Nocturnal Wonderland some other time. Cocky? Yes. True? Yes. Instead of wasting the mix on a competition that never worked out I felt that it was too sweet for euthanasia and instead deserved to have a go at your eardrums. So here ya go: A bite-sized chunk of awesome that will make your heart beat 174 times per minute. For the geeks out there - this was performed live on a Novation Launchpad with Ableton Live in three stitched parts.
