It's Friday and the Big Shot Bob crew is back with Episode 131 of Shoot Around — the weekly bonus show where Robert Horry, Rob Jenners, and B-Dog Brandon Harper dig into the questions YOU send in and whatever's on their minds.   This week kicks off with a debate born from the new Michael Jackson biopic hitting theaters: Start, Bench, Cut — MJ era edition. The Thriller era (1982–85), the Bad era (1987–89), and the Dangerous era (1991–94) are all on the table. Which era do you start? Which do you bench? Which do you cut? The guys break down their picks, argue over the greatest MJ music videos of all time (Smooth Criminal vs. Remember the Time), debate whether Chris Tucker was actually IN Smooth Criminal (he wasn't), and Harper goes deep on the Ghost mini-movie that almost nobody's seen. The verdict? Unanimous love for Thriller, but serious disagreement on whether Bad or Dangerous gets the bench.   Then the guys jump into the all-time greatest NBA coaches debate, sparked by Pat Riley making it clear at 81 years old that he has zero plans to retire or step aside. Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Gregg Popovich, Don Nelson, Lenny Wilkins, Red Auerbach — who makes the cut? Robert Horry gives a unique firsthand perspective on Phil Jackson, including the detail that Phil literally never spoke to him during their championship runs together. There's also the Del Harris comparison — same roster, completely different results — and what that says about coaching being as much about managing personalities as drawing up plays.   A Reddit user's anti-tanking beer pricing proposal gets a quick airing, and then the crew weighs in on Diego Pavia going undrafted after representing himself at the NFL Draft — no agent, no deal. Robert Horry reflects on firing his own agent in 2001 and what he missed out on off the court despite winning six championships, and the guys debate whether being your own representative ever actually works when you're already fighting an uphill battle.   To close things out, a fan question about the best superhero shows ever made opens up a great conversation about Invincible (currently must-watch TV), The Boys, Smallville, The Flash, Dragon Ball Z, the upcoming Mortal Kombat film, and a He-Man movie trip that Robert Horry is already planning with his son. Plus — the case for a live-action Thundercats reboot that the world is clearly not ready for.

Episode Summary:In this powerful and deeply insightful episode, Eddie Garcia takes listeners on a journey through his extraordinary dance career—from a tap-dancing kid earning scholarships at Dupre's to becoming one of the youngest dancers ever selected by Michael Jackson. Eddie reflects on the discipline and versatility that shaped him early on, blending classical training with emerging street styles that positioned him perfectly for the explosion of music videos in the 1980s.He shares behind-the-scenes stories from iconic projects including Smooth Criminal, the Bad and Dangerous World Tours, and his early work with Janet Jackson under Paula Abdul. Smooth Criminal, A One-Man American Crime Wave exposes the consequences of our government releasing hardened criminals back into society where some run amok, stealing, drugging, even murdering innocent loyal American citizens. We do not question the good they may do for the United States, nor do we argue that the program should be ended. That's for others to consider. What we strongly advocate is that innocent families need to be protected while these criminals are on the loose. The program's secrecy certainly needs to be maintained, but as a spy agency, the C.I.A. should be capable of controlling freed criminals without exposing their clandestine operation. Instead, appeals to the F.B.I., then ATF, and local police went unheeded. It's unconscionable that an innocent victim cannot get any protection, and is told, "Go home, he's no con artist," or that a terrorized man shouldn't have to fear he'd be jailed for simply appealing for help from the local police. Law enforcement was protecting the criminal and not honest upright pro-American citizenry. This book could have been called, "No where to turn," as there truly was no law enforcement willing to help rescue them from the terrorism they endured in these United States. The rationale, "A few Americans have to suffer for the overall good of 315 million of us," is not acceptable. Somehow, someway these secret agencies can remain undercover while protecting all law abiding Americans. We do not know the extent of the present program, but invite all victims to come forth, as did these families. The secret releasing of criminals is such a success, there's hardly a doubt it's continuing today. Today's victims need Government protection. This week on Crack the Book, I'm still in awe of Shakespeare — and not ready to leave him behind. Somewhere between Falstaff's jokes and Othello's heartbreak, I realized just how much I've climbed the Shakespeare learning curve. The language that once felt impossible now feels like music, and these plays — Henry IV, Parts 1 & 2, and Othello — have been my favorite week yet.To start, though, I covered a little of Shakespeare's own history, so that we can better understand what was happening around him as he wrote his plays. The Henry IV plays are part of Shakespeare's “Henriad,” tracing Prince Hal's transformation from tavern-dwelling prankster to King Henry V. Part 1 sets up the tension between fathers and sons — King Henry and Hal, Northumberland and Hotspur — while Falstaff brings both comedy and chaos. I was surprised by how much I loved the histories: the mix of battle and banter, the political drama, and the emotional depth. By Part 2, the story turns elegiac. Henry IV is aging, Hal is ready to lead, and Falstaff's charm finally wears thin. The final father–son scenes left me sobbing under a tree outside our hotel — Shakespeare reached across 400 years and hit me right in the heart. Then comes Othello, which could not be more different. Where Falstaff is funny, Iago is chilling. He's not a misunderstood fool — he's pure manipulation, the “honest” man who deceives everyone. I was struck by how quickly Shakespeare draws each character: Desdemona's sweetness, Emilia's courage, Othello's nobility. The tragedy lands hard because we believe them all. And even here, amid jealousy and death, Shakespeare finds humor — like a quick, ridiculous debate about national drinking habits.I watched the Royal Shakespeare Company productions of Henry IV with Anthony Sher's Falstaff, and they were brilliant — vivid sword fights, excellent pacing, and real warmth. By Othello, I'd developed my ear enough to read without watching. This project keeps surprising me — and this week, it reminded me why Shakespeare endures. His plays aren't ancient; they're alive, human, and heartbreakingly funny. This is a year-long challenge! Join me next week for Giorgio Vasari's Lives of the Artists and Benvenuto Cellini's Autobiography.LINKTed Gioia/The Honest Broker's 12-Month Immersive Humanities Course (paywalled!)My Amazon Book List (NOT an affiliate link)CONNECTThe complete list of Crack the Book Episodes: https://cheryldrury.substack.com/p/crack-the-book-start-here?r=u3t2rTo read more of my writing, visit my Substack - https://www.cheryldrury.substack.com.Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cldrury/ LISTENSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5GpySInw1e8IqNQvXow7Lv?si=9ebd5508daa245bdApple Podcasts -
