Mixtape Rewind: Same Title, Different Songs

Super Awesome Mix

This week's Mixtape Rewind takes us back to Season 3 when we first thought of the idea that would become our podcast, The Battle. What happens when two totally different songs share the exact same title? We built a “battle mix” to find out—pairing heavyweights and outliers across genres and decades—then we argue, analyze, and crown winners. From Go to Get Back, each round reveals how a single word can split into protest anthems, breakup arias, dance‑floor bliss, or guitar‑driven chaos. We kick off with Blink‑182 and The Black Keys on Go, weighing a bold tonal shift against a signature groove. Eurythmics steamroll Charles & Eddie on Would I Lie To You with brass, bite, and Annie Lennox's powerhouse vocal. True Love sparks a values debate: Angels & Airwaves deliver a soaring, cinematic build while Coldplay's “lie if you must” line clashes with the title. Roy Orbison's You Got It proves timeless compared to a New Kids on the Block time capsule. Then it's Growing Pains, as Alessia Cara's present‑tense anxiety meets Ludacris's reflective narrative—two coming‑of‑age angles, one title. The center of the card gets fiery. Green Day's Holiday channels mid‑2000s protest energy against Madonna's disco‑pop celebration. Rihanna's Take A Bow serves velvet‑gloved dismissal, while Muse opens an album with a synth‑rock chill that lingers. Tupac and The Beach Boys both claim I Get Around, one with effortless charisma and the other with historic chart significance. Foo Fighters' Run slams with near‑metal intensity, outpacing Snow Patrol's slow‑burn. Happy pits NF's candid mental‑health lens against Pharrell's pure joy machine—two roads to one feeling. And our main event, Get Back, throws Ludacris's peak hit‑maker energy against The Beatles' cultural gravity and complicated context. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/same-name-different-songs-mix/pl.u-JPAZEoJTLd7Y15jhttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/1sCtai2Hujfbv9kZD0qnU9?si=779125752f4c4f3f     Go by The Black KeysGo by blink-182Would I Lie To You? Dave Stewart is a true music icon. Born in Sunderland in 1952 his first love affair was with football – dreaming of a career playing for the Black Cats, but a knee injury and his parents' divorce changed his entire outlook. Music filled a hole - despite a music teacher who described his dreams as ‘idiotic' it became his passion, inspired by his Dad's high-tech (for the 70s!) stereo system, a Robert Johnson blues album and some eye-opening teenage experimentation with acid.He signed to Elton John's record label shortly after leaving school and after several false starts he met Annie Lennox in 1976 and formed a band together called The Tourists – a pre-curser to the significantly more successful 80s project The Eurythmics .In the 45 years since then Dave has done it all – as an artist he's a Grammy winner, as a producer he's won multiple Brit Awards, as a song-writer he's won the prestigious Silver Clef award, he's won a Golden Glove for composing a song with Mick Jagger for Alfie and in 2024 he teamed up with Joss Stone to write a musical version of The Time Traveller's Wife. It's hard to put his contribution to music into context because his impact on popular music is so vast.Let me list just SOME of the artists he's produced, written for or recorded with:Paul McCartney, Bono, Aretha Franklin, Alison Moyet, Bryan Ferry, Sinead O'Connor, No Doubt, Jon Bon Jovi, Bob Geldoff, Bryan Ferry, & Stevie Nicks. In fact in 2011 he briefly formed a supergroup comprised of himself, Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley and A.R. Rahman. He's one of the great innovators – in 1998 his album SlyFi became the first album to be released on the internet – it predates Google, and MySpace and Facebook wouldn't be launched for another SEVEN years. Now in his early 70s he continues to inspire – until Covid he owned and ran a creative members club in London, and through his production company Dave Stewart Entertainment he continues to push musical boundaries and work with some of the world's biggest names in music.Enjoy our chat with an icon. Cheers! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

For the Season 11 finale, we present part two of our series on the ‘80s. We continue in the alt-rock/indie/new wave vein from our last episode – where we featured the likes of U2, The Cult, Bryan Ferry, Fine Young Cannibals and more. This week, we continue with: Robert Smith of The Cure in conversation with Christopher. Robert is painfully shy and yet quite revealing and is, in Tom’s words, “downright lovable”. The B-52s, who remember their early days and the struggle to continue after the death of guitarist Ricky Wilson. Dave Gahan and Martin Gore from Depeche Mode in a short chat with Christopher. Peter Garrett and the late Rob Hirst of Midnight Oil talking about being famous in Australia and trying to win over audiences in the Canada and the U.S. Toronto’s Jane Siberry, who was recently inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, talks about her unique vision for her music – and why she carries around a “very soft bat” to ward off her fans. Christopher’s interview with Annie Lennox of Eurythmics as she talks about fashion and anti fashion. Producers note: The promised interviews with Pet Shop Boys, The Fixx and Thompson Twins will air in Season 12. We promise.

Annie Lennox burst onto the international stage in the early 1980s as part of Eurythmics. The British synth-pop duo, also featuring Dave Stewart, was at the forefront of pop music's New Wave, and Lennox's appearance in the “Sweet Dreams” video – close cropped, bright orange hair in a bold man's suit and tie – created a captivating image that, when paired with her astonishing, soulful voice – was impossible to forget. After several more hits with Eurythmics, Lennox went solo in the 1990s, and became one of the most successful and awarded female British artists of the past 50 years. Over her career she has won 8 Brit Awards, 4 Grammys, an MTV Music Video Award, Billboard Century Award, an Oscar, and a Golden Globe. She is also a passionate and celebrated philanthropist.

This one happened fast. A week ago, a publicist reached out to ask if I'd possibly be interested in helping to promote a documentary about a guy (a white guy) who thinks he's supposed to bring together the native people of South and North America — whose combined teachings will then spread across the planet and save us all. My first impression was that this one sounded crazy, possibly racist, and not something I really want to spend time on. But the fact that the director had worked with Werner Herzog caught my attention. (I love me some Werner Herzog.) So I agreed to check out a screener, and last night, Anya and I sat down to watch at least the first few minutes — reluctantly. WTF?! We were hooked immediately, watched the whole thing in amazement, and this afternoon, less than 24 hours later, Gabe Polsky and I sat down to talk about his film. If it's playing anywhere near you, trust me, go see it. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll get a little confused and grossed out … but you will not — guaranteed — get bored.Intro music “Brightside of the Sun,” by Basin and Range. “I Saved the World Today,” by The Eurythmics. Despite carefully planning his trip with his friend Teddy and driving nine hours to the festival, Andy faced a series of unexpected challenges and adventures. The trip kicks off with a tense interaction with law enforcement when they are pulled over by a Kentucky State Trooper, escalating as a K-9 unit arrives. Fortunately, they are allowed to proceed to Bonnaroo without any legal troubles.Upon arrival, Andy and Teddy set up their elaborate campsite, which included modern amenities like a solar generator and 42-inch TV. The first night involved acclimatizing to the youthful crowd and loud electronic dance music that played until the early hours. Things took a dramatic turn when Teddy experienced a sudden medical emergency and had to leave, promising to return later to pick Andy up. Later, a severe storm brought torrential rains and flooding, leading to the cancellation of the entire festival due to infrastructural failure. Despite disappointment, Andy encountered numerous acts of kindness from fellow festival-goers and eventually managed to get back home safely, albeit with a vivid, unforgettable experience.BANDS: Dogs in a Pile, Eurythmics, Foster the People, Goose, Insane Clown Posse, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Lemon Twigs, Luke Combs, Marcus King, Miranda Lambert, Parisi.VENUES: 2025 Bonnaroo Music Festival. Get ready for an unforgettable conversation with Shelly Clark, the powerhouse singer, dancer, and actress who helped shape the sound of 1970s R&B as a founding member of the chart-topping girl group Honey Cone.Born in Brooklyn and performing professionally by the age of six, Shelly Clark's career began on Broadway before she went on to tour with legends like Cab Calloway and work as an Ikette in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. But her real breakthrough came in 1968, when she co-founded Honey Cone with Edna Wright and Carolyn Willis. With Holland-Dozier-Holland behind them at the Hot Wax/Invictus label, Honey Cone shot to stardom. Their smash hit “Want Ads” hit No.1 on both the Billboard Pop and R&B charts in 1971 and sold over a million copies. Follow-up hits like “Stick-Up,” “One Monkey Don't Stop No Show,” and “The Day I Found Myself” cemented their place in music history. Honey Cone weren't just about catchy hooks — their lyrics spoke to female empowerment and independence, making them trailblazers in the girl-group era. After the group disbanded, Shelly turned down an offer to join The Supremes and instead found a new path in television, solo work, and later in her personal life. In 1980, she married Verdine White, legendary bassist of Earth, Wind & Fire. Their marriage has lasted more than four decades, built on music, love, and mutual respect. Today, Shelly continues to collaborate with Verdine, including producing his 2024 solo project “Superman.”In recent years, Shelly has also revived Honey Cone with a new lineup, bringing timeless classics to fresh audiences. In 2024, the group released their first single in 50 years — a stunning cover of the Eurythmics' “Here Comes the Rain Again.”This episode dives deep into Shelly Clark's incredible journey — from Broadway beginnings to No.1 hits, from Honey Cone fame to life with Verdine White, and her ongoing legacy as a singer, producer, and keeper of soul and R&B history. If you love 70s soul, R&B girl groups, Earth, Wind & Fire, or music history, this is one story you won't want to miss.If you have any suggestions for guests for this show, or any commnents or feedback please reach out to me via the website https://www.abreathoffreshair.com.au#shellyclark #ikette #honeyCone #earthwindandfire

The multi award-winning singer songwriter Annie Lennox has been part of the musical landscape for almost 50 years, from her days in The Tourists, to the Eurythmics and then going solo. Now at the age of 70, Annie has brought out a book of photographs called Annie Lennox: Retrospective, and talks to Nuala McGovern about her life and career.President Trump has said that pregnant women should avoid paracetamol because of the risks of autism and that US doctors will soon be advised not to prescribe Tylenol, as paracetamol is known in the US, to pregnant women. However he didn't provide any scientific evidence for this. UK health officials have stressed that paracetamol remains the safest painkiller available to pregnant women, and Health Secretary Wes Streeting has told women to ignore Trump's comments. Nuala is joined by Dr Alex Tsompanidis, senior research associate at the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University and the BBC's Health reporter, Jim Reed. It's a year since the death of Alice Webb, the first woman in the UK to die from complications after a liquid Brazilian butt lift, a non-surgical procedure injecting filler into the buttocks. You don't need to have any medical qualifications to carry out the procedure. We talk to Sasha Dean who had terrifying complications after a liquid BBL and to David Sines from the JCCP, which runs a voluntary regulator for practitioners. Are you guilty of ‘phubbing'? It's the process of snubbing the person you are with in person by looking at your phone. New research shows that these phone snubs can have a huge impact on relationships. Dr Claire Hart, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Southampton, tells us about her findings and Dr Kaitlyn Regehr, University College London and author of Smartphone Nation, discusses the impact parental phubbing can have on children.

For the week ending August 27, 1983, the Billboard Hot 100 was loaded with some of the most iconic songs of the decade. At the top, The Police were wrapping up their legendary run with “Every Breath You Take” before yielding to a new wave of contenders. Hot on their heels, Eurythmics' synth-driven “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” was climbing fast, while Michael Sembello's “Maniac” was burning up the charts thanks to the Flashdance craze. The rest of the Top 10 offered a mix of pure 80s variety: Donna Summer's “She Works Hard for the Money”, Men at Work's “It's a Mistake”, and Taco's quirky “Puttin' on the Ritz” stood alongside classic rock staples like Stevie Nicks' “Stand Back” and Billy Joel's “Tell Her About It.” Further down the list, radio was buzzing with Lionel Richie, Culture Club, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, and Journey—all proving that pop, rock, R&B, and new wave were all thriving together. On this week's podcast, Rob and Dave will dive into the chart and each pick a personal favorite. The fun twist is in their contrasting styles: Dave leans into the big anthems and timeless pop moments, while Rob often digs a little deeper, spotlighting tracks that might not have hit No. 1 but still capture the spirit of the era. Together, they'll break down what makes these songs stand out—whether it's the infectious hooks, the MTV-ready videos, or the way the tracks still hold up decades later. By the end, listeners will get not only a countdown snapshot of late-summer '83, but also two very different perspectives on which hits truly defined that moment.
