Come see us live in London June 22nd: https://bigbellycomedy.club/event/lions-led-by-donkeys-podcast-live-big-fat-festival-southbank/ A conflict breaks out between a newly independent Mexico and a newly back-to-having-kings France. It culminates in a small series of armed incursions and blockades in 1838-39. Did it start because of an aggrieved French baker? Did Napoleon's armies advance the science of military optics because their commander wanted to look at feet? In this episode (the first one where Nate has researched, written, and hosted), we get to the bottom of the semi-apocryphal Pastry War. Sources: Atwater, James D.; Ruiz, Ramon Eduardo. The discussion centers around the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and monetization strategies, emphasizing the dual challenges of protecting data and AI models while also effectively pricing these solutions. Experts Bryant Tow and James D. Wilton explore the urgent risks posed by AI, including threats to company data and the integrity of AI models. They highlight the importance of aligning technical depth with business value, particularly as AI adoption accelerates across industries.Bryant Tow, Chief Security Officer at Leapfrog Services, emphasizes the need for organizations to conduct an AI readiness assessment to understand their specific use cases and the necessary infrastructure. He argues that data classification and retention policies are crucial for effective cybersecurity, as they help organizations determine what data needs protection and how to manage it. Tow also discusses the importance of governance and user training in ensuring that AI tools are used appropriately and securely.James D. Wilton, founder of Monovate, adds that pricing strategies for cybersecurity solutions should reflect the varying levels of protection and the perceived value by different customer segments. He suggests that companies can create premium bundles for advanced features while also considering the architecture of their offerings to justify pricing. Wilton highlights the need for businesses to articulate the value of their services, especially in a landscape where clients may be hesitant to invest due to cost-cutting measures. The conversation also touches on the skills gap in the cybersecurity workforce and the potential for outsourcing as a solution. Both experts agree that effective communication between security leaders and go-to-market teams is essential for conveying the value of cybersecurity solutions to clients. They conclude that organizations must continuously demonstrate the benefits of their services to prevent customer fatigue and ensure ongoing investment in cybersecurity measures. Batman & Robin [ComicsDiscovery S09E27]

We Only Find Them When They're Dead.

That's how you end up in the freemium trap.” — Jeff Mains“Pick a value metric that scales with the customer, not just your bottom line.” — James Wilton“The biggest growth lever most SaaS companies ignore? Pricing.” — Jeff MainsSaaS Leadership LessonsPricing is perception – Your value isn't just what you deliver, it's what customers believe they're getting.Freemium can be fatal – If your free tier attracts the wrong audience or discourages usage, it hurts more than it helps.Your best price metric is tied to your customer's success – Not your costs, not your features. It's about their value.Discounting can damage trust – Shaving off dollars may feel good short-term, but it lowers long-term perceived value.Founders should evolve from instinct to insight – Start with your gut, but shift to customer data and behavior fast.Keep pricing simple – Too many tiers confuse buyers and stall conversion. Shaking Up the World is a collection of stories by the Naval Academy Class of 1957 members. Some classmates watched Japanese planes bombing Pearl Harbor (Tom Marnane). Walt Meukow spent the war as a prisoner in the Philippines; another Art Aronson, was a prisoner in the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz. The Shaking and shaping of four years at Annapolis molded men who would spend their lives shaking up the world, large and small, in uniform and as civilians. Brad Parkinson's architecture of the Global Positioning System (GPS) was monumental. Charlie Duke, an astronaut, spent 72 hours on the moon's surface. Jerry Barczak tells about being hijacked by Hezbollah terrorists in a fatal event. The War in Vietnam involved Leo Hyatt's account of imprisonment at the Hanoi Hilton, which is a classic in bravery and loyalty. Larry Bustle's account of being shot down over enemy territory brings back the terrific impact war had on all of us—Bob McElwee's story of his life as a National Football referee
