We start as always with a chat with George and his gardening question, this week all about Raspberries.Marc and Jamie chatted about what they had been up too in their gardens, Marc gave a Robomower update from work. Our guest tonight is someone with over 32 years experience in the world of horticulture, specialising in creating gardens that are naturalistic and wildlife friendly. He is very passionate about making the world a better place for all and even has a petition to try and force change with new build estates to be more sympathetic with nature and green spaces. Sign Paul's petition https://c.org/4T4nTzV5FmI love hearing how Paul creates gardens with nature and wildlife at the forefront rather than an afterthought. Which also leads to a much smaller cost than traditional hard landscaping and garden design. Thanks everyone for watching and listening, join us next week for another guest from the world of horticulture

One of the sweetest moments of my life took place when I was reunited with my childhood nanny, Evelyn. Hired by my parents when I was an infant, Evelyn left her small rural community at age 17 to care for me in our Montreal home. Fifty years later, I reunited with my beloved nanny, who had spent her life on a farm near the tiny village of Brinston, not far from where she grew up. I have fond memories of the summers spent with Evelyn after our initial reunion. We would go on adventures at 40 km/hr on rural roads and pick raspberries at the local u-pick berry farm. Evelyn made the most gorgeous pies, which I haven't perfected, but I can make an excellent raspberry cake.Read my reflection and listen to my podcast episode about my reunion with my nanny, Evelyn Smail, here (you'll also find my recipe for raspberry cake when you follow the link): https://www.marionkane.com/recipe-2/nanny-child-reunion-evelyn-find/ #reunion #raspberries #raspberrycake #recipes #MarionKane #foodsleuth

Welcome to this week's blog post accompanying Episode 632 of The Veg Grower Podcast. In this episode, Richard shares what's been happening on the allotment and in the kitchen garden during mid-November, tackles a few tricky areas, takes us through pruning summer raspberries, and explains why bare-root fruit trees can save you a fortune. Allotment Update - Tackling problem areas After a very wet Saturday, the weather dried up enough for a productive session on the allotment. Mid-November brings a noticeable shift: fewer people around, shorter days, and trees only now beginning to drop their leaves thanks to the mild autumn. Tackling Problem Areas Richard focuses on a few tricky spots this week: The top boundary alongside an abandoned neighbouring plot, where brambles and tall weeds always creep across. Only so much can be done until the plot is re-let, but winter tidying keeps it under control. The asparagus bed, now fully died back. Richard: Cleared weeds around the crowns Added homemade compost Layered on seaweed from the local beach (with permission) Finished with straw from the potato bedsAll to give the asparagus and rhubarb a strong start into spring. Under the gooseberry bushes, where thick bramble growth has taken hold. After cutting them back to the base: A few low gooseberry branches were removed for access Some bramble roots were dug out The plan now is regular hoeing to stay on top of regrowthIt's part of a longer-term approach to improve the area while keeping things mostly no-dig. Kitchen Garden Update - Pruning raspberries Back home, the focus is on pruning summer raspberries. Pruning Summer Raspberries Summer-fruiting raspberries fruit on second-year canes. So the job now is to: Cut the older, brown canes at ground level Keep the younger, greener first-year stems for next year's crop Richard uses a system where one side of the raspberry bed is first-year growth and the other is second-year, making pruning simple and repeatable. Autumn Raspberries The autumn raspberries are still fruiting and even flowering, so they'll be left until winter before being cut down. In the Greenhouse Things are still thriving: Tomatoes have now been cleared Habaneros, chillies, and aubergines are still fruiting Strawberry plants, citrus, grape and peach trees are now sheltered inside The Autopot system has performed brilliantly again Planning ahead for sowing chillies and aubergines in December/January to make the most of the long season Recipe of the Week: Habanero Honey Hot Sauce With so many chillies still producing, Richard shares a beautifully balanced homemade hot sauce. It works with any type of chilli and stores well in the fridge. The full recipe is available on the website. The Podding Shed: Bare-Root Fruit Trees It's the perfect season for bare-root fruit trees — usually available from November to February — and they're one of the best ways to save money when expanding your fruit patch. Why Choose Bare-Root? Often less than half the price of potted trees Much easier to transport Establish extremely well when planted while dormant Ideal for gardeners on a budget Looking After Them Soak roots for 24 hours before planting If you can't plant immediately, pot temporarily Get them into the ground while the soil is still warm Come spring, they bounce into life with fresh growth Richard also mentions his chosen tree for the year — a Cornish Gold pear, grown especially for juicing. Right Plant, Right Place – Root Crops & BerriesIn this episode, It's the October full-moon gardening phase — a perfect time to cultivate soil and sow root crops across all four NZ planting zones. You'll learn what to plant now, how to get the best results in your region, and why this phase of the moon is ideal for “spoiling your soil.”Our Fruit of the Week takes a closer look at blueberries and raspberries — where they came from, how they've adapted, and why their specific soil and climate needs truly reinforce our mantra: right plant, right place. Discover the fascinating history of these berries, from Roman gardens and North American forests to New Zealand's modern orchards — now spanning around 800 hectares and up to two million blueberry plants nationwide! This week's Tea of the Week is Dandelion Tea — the humble lawn weed that doubles as a spring cleanser — and we review two brilliant books:
This week, we're celebrating new fall cookbooks that belong on your kitchen counter. First, Aleksandra Crapanzano, author of Chocolat: Parisian Desserts and Other Delights, takes us from Marie Antoinette's early “truffle” to the French art of baking at home. She leaves us with her Chocolate Ganache Tart with Raspberries. Then, Anna Ansari explores the delicious connections across cuisines in Silk Roads: A Flavor Odyssey, tracing flavors from Baku to Beijing and shares her recipe for Shivit Oshi (Khivan green noodles with beef stew). Finally, creator and Next Level Chef alum Cassie Yeung brings big, weeknight-friendly energy from Bad B*tch in the Kitch, including her 30-minute Beef & Broccoli. Have we discovered life on Mars? What does the center of our galaxy taste like? To find out, and to kick off Season 5 of The LIUniverse, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu have reached out all the way to Tokyo to chat with Dr. Kelly Blumenthal, the Director of the International Astronomical Union Office for Astronomy Outreach. As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, a rock found in Sapphire Canyon by the Mars Perseverance Rover containing potential biosignatures. Allen explains why this rock is different: iron and sulfur nodules that exhibit indications of layers which, on Earth, could only be formed by bacteria. Kelly points out that there needs to be more investigation before we can say anything for sure. Chuck asks Kelly, who when she was 12 told her dad that she wanted to study galaxy evolution, to describe the research she did at the start of her career. She talks about studying with pioneering astronomer Joshua Barnes in Hawaii during her Masters projects and PhD. For her first project, she studied star formation rates in Jellyfish Galaxies, which are being ram-stripped of their gases and so appear to have tendrils. She ended up looking at the history of merging galaxies through cosmic time using large cosmological simulations. Then it's time for our first student question of Season 5, from Jeannie, who asks, “Now that we've found so many planets outside of our solar system, should Pluto be promoted as a planet again?” (Pluto's “demotion” nearly 20 years ago was traumatic for some.) According to Kelly, though, the “demotion” was really a reclassification, and at least for the time being, Pluto is going to stay a dwarf planet, a new category of which it was the first of its kind. She contrasts Pluto to the moons of Jupiter and reminds us of the new rules about what's a planet and what's not. Kelly brings up Star Trek and therefore gives Chuck permission to geek out over “Devil in the Dark” from the Star Trek: The Original Series, and “Silicon Avatar” from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Kelly talks about bingeing sci-fi in high school including 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the Foundation series, and more recently, The Expanse series, which she's listened to three times as audio books! Chuck and Kelly discuss communicating about science, and even the role science fiction can play. Kelly talks about the importance of understanding your audience. She uses the example of explaining what nebulas look like through the Chandra X-Ray Observatory to a blind and low-vision audience. Kelly also talks about how you can approach science through poetry, music, dance, theatre and art – even smell. She recalls a talk where someone working with incarcerated kids, who was limited in what props they could bring, made the universe come alive for them using the scent of raspberries, which have a similar chemical signature as the center of our galaxy. For our next audience question, Bridget asks, “So is that comet actually an interstellar spaceship?” Kelly debunks the notion that Comet 3I/ATLAS is anything other than a rock that's come from outside our solar system and explains why extrasolar asteroids are amazing things. We end with a discussion of the IAU's upcoming, worldwide “100 Hours of Astronomy” on Oct. 2-5, 2025, including a 24-hour live stream on Oct. 4 from the oldest functioning planetarium in Japan. Watch it live on YouTube via the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach @IAUoutreach here. You can also visit their website at https://iauoutreach.org/, follow IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach on Facebook and LinkedIn, and on Instagram @oao_iau. The next time you open your fridge, take a second to behold the miracles inside of it: Raspberries from California, butter from New Zealand, steak from Nebraska. None of that would have been remotely possible before the creation of the cold chain. The cold chain is the name for the end-to-end refrigeration of our food from farm to truck to warehouse to grocery store and ultimately to our fridges at home. And it's one of the great achievements of the modern world. On today's show, Nicola Twilley, food journalist and author of Frostbite: How Refrigeration Changed Our Food, Our Planet, and Ourselves, tells us the story of how our world got cold, and what that's meant for the economy. We'll hear about two pioneers of cold: The cheapskate meat baron Gustavus Swift, and the train-hopping chemist Polly Pennington. And we'll take a look at whether all this refrigeration might have created some new problems.
