This is a public episode. He is swallowed up by the heart of the city, not knowing where it leads. En: Standing next to him is a man named Takashi, quietly observing Haruka's confusion. Takashi comes up with a practical solution, pointing to a robot-type vending machine that displays guides to each station. He instructs Haruka on how to use its functions. En: "It's good to ask where you want to go. This machine can guide you to the station and even nearby restaurants," he explains. En: Haruka understands what she needs to do and approaches the vending machine. Her destination is Tokyo Tower. The starting point she inquires about is Shibuya Station where she stands. The robot calmly provides helpful information, "To go to Tokyo Tower, take the Ginza Line from here towards Asakusa, then get off at Shimbashi Station. It's about a 15-minute walk."Ja: ハルカは委ねられた指示通りに進む。 En: Following the given directions, Haruka proceeds. She expresses gratitude to the robot guiding her through the bustling Tokyo subway, "Thank you, Robot-san!" she smiles. En: Eventually, she stands before the magnificent Tokyo Tower. The door to adventure opened by the robot vending machine brings her an experience and a great sense of accomplishment. From that day on, Haruka no longer fears asking for directions in city stations. And so, the story continues into an urban tale featuring the everyday lives of Takashi, Haruka, and the robot vending machine. THE Presentations Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
I am just back from a highly pointless presentation. The bureaucrats who run the Tokyo Metro subway system and the Tokyo Government Planning Division were presenting on their plan for a new subway line to be constructed in my neighbourhood. This is my second occasion to attend one of these types of presentations. The previous one was about changing the direction of aircraft landing at Haneda and for planes to fly low over our neighbourhoods, which unfortunately are in the new direct flight path. These “explanation sessions” are pointless for many reasons, including the way they are conducted. There is no real appetite to entertain the viewpoint of the assembled residents and so the design is to obscure, divert and suck up as much time as possible with administrative aspects of the meeting, in order to limit the question time. Interestingly they had a slide show, which had an announcer read the whole content to us. Why was that required, when everyone can read what is on screen? To use up the question time of course. Question time itself was interesting in the way they handled it. Somewhat surprisingly, they do what we teach regarding hostile questions. They had a navigator take the hot question, then paraphrase it, removing all the venom and spiky bits, before handing it over to the supposed experts. You might be thinking, “well these are government bureaucrats, so there is no relation to the world of commerce”. Often we can see the flaws in others, but ignore those same flaws in ourselves. Japanese business presentations are very formal. There will be a navigator to tell us things, like where the exits are located and to turn off our phones. The President giving the talk will often not be highly familiar with the slides prepared by the underlings and will read the whole thing to us. Sometimes, if there is a screen located behind the podium, they will unhelpfully turn their back to us and their head toward the screen and then read the whole content to us. Often, there will be a slick corporate video shown, the main purpose of which is to reduce the President's speaking time burden and which adds very little value to the presentation. Taking the sting out of questions is a legitimate technique, but you still have to handle the questions. Today there was a lot of dissembling of answers and that is never satisfactory. The same things happen in business. You can see the speaker is flustered by the question and doesn't know how to handle it. The first problem is they go directly to answer mode, instead of creating a little brain space to think about the answer. Invariably, we have all had the experience of coming up with the killer answer about two hours too late, for when we needed it. What came out of our mouth though was the first thing which popped into our mind and obviously that will never be as good as a more considered answer. Our mouth was too close to our ear and our brain wasn't engaged fast enough, before we blurted out our response. We can wind up sprouting nonsense in reply to the question. Just adding a little cushion makes a world of difference. The cushion is that space between the question ending and the answer proper beginning. You might ask them to repeat the question or you can paraphrase what they said or you can make a neutral comment such as, “that is a very important consideration” or all three, to gain thinking time. Five seconds does a wonder of good when it comes to contemplating how to handle tough questions. Naturally, our answers won't always be satisfying for certain members of the audience, but we need to explain the logic of our approach, decisions or our actions. If we don't know the answer, then trying to snow the audience, instead of admitting the truth is a guaranteed way to destroy our reputation. Audiences will accept it if you say to the questioner, “I don't have an answer for that point at the moment, but let's exchange business cards after my talk and I will find the answer for you. Who has the next question?”. Now this only works when the question is very specific and the answer is not something that you would be expected to necessarily have at your fingertips. If it is within the scope of your subject and you don't know the answer, then that is a black mark on your professionalism. You see this sometimes from jet setting VIPs who swoop in to give their talk, before they head off to their next engagement. It is a PR exercise which can go wrong very quickly. Their presentation was prepared for them and they think their job is to just read it out to us. Again, it is better to be honest and admit you should know that answer, apologise that you don't and promise to get the answer to the questioner. None of us are perfect, so we will accept your odd flaw and imperfection. We should always keep in mind that every time we get up to speak, we are punting our personal and professional brands out there for all to see. Prepare thoroughly and rehearse, rehearse, rehearse is the right formula. If we do that, people will come away impressed with us and feel the time spent was worthwhile and they will be looking forward to hearing from us again in the future.

Neil Butler is a 40-year Tokyo veteran and CEO / Publisher of Metropolis Magazine. Neil is well-known in Japan from his successful 13 year stint with Australian Meat & Livestock where he coined the catch-phrase "Aussie Beef" and you will hear this great marketing success story during this episode. However for the past 13 years, he has been the driving force behind the free Tokyo magazine Metropolis and its on-line version. Neil talks about his numerous challenges he has faced in the publishing business and some of the opportunities he has discovered during this pandemic. He offers advice on working in Japan, his proudest career accomplishment in 40 years, and why he loves working for Metropolis magazine despite the financial difficulties. I used to work for Metropolis back in the 90's when it was still called Tokyo Classifieds, so we exchange a couple of interesting stories about working for this iconic, 27 year old publication. This was great opportunity to catch up with an old friend, share a couple beers, and swap stories, and that's exactly what this episode sounds like. This week we’re taking a deep dive into remote gaming. How do you play with real components against your friends from afar in this age of social distancing? Let's take a closer look at three steps to get you there. But first, we discuss our question of the week: What's a game that gets better with one minor change? In acquisition disorders this week Anthony looks at the new expansions for Tokyo Metro and Tokyo Tsukiji from Draper Games, while Chris digs into Catapult Kingdoms - both games on Kickstarter now. At the table this week, Anthony reviews The Liberation of Rietburg, a new Legends of Andor coop spinoff and Chris revisits Aquasphere, a classic Stefan Feld game that made it back to the table recently. Finally, in the feature, Anthony and Chris share their three steps for choosing, setting up and playing a game remotely over Skype, Facetime or Zoom on your personal devices. Mainly just want to have a chat guys, talk about some games played and answer a few questions from the mailbag. However two of the questions have a strong link to "Integrity" when conducting reviews and I certainly do talk a lot about that. So it makes for a good title for the podcast! Hear my thoughts on the Wingspan expansion, Ishtar and Tokyo Metro! And then 4 very interesting questions from the community mailbag!

Our hosts are back at it, talking about parks visited, movies watched, and games played. Zach got hooked on Loopin’ Louie, Adrian tried out the Tokyo games, and Jeff yells into the void about Downfall. Jeff then runs down their KDM campaign and a not so important blood bowl match. After another trip into the Lookback Machine, our hosts take in some news, with a New Pandemic Game and a video of Rodney talking about paid previews and reviews. Back by popular demand, here is a banging all vinyl mix by Naoki Takahashi (also known as DJ 2017 - Onani). Naoki and I played many parties together over the years, mainly in and around Ibaraki Prefecture in the mid 2000's, and his Tokyo Metro Mix he did for me years ago (back when the show streamed live on Pulse Radio) gained a loyal following. So happy to have him back in mix.No tracklisting, but I'm sure the true techno heads will recognize some of these bangers. You can follow Naoki on Youtube, where you can also see him perform this mix. You can also find him on Mixcloud.Download Tokyo Metro Vol.30 (mp3)

This was a minimal techno set set recorded live at the Burning party at Xenobar/Jamhouse, Akita Japan on October 13th 2018 (scroll down to see all gear used). This set was played live at the Global Disco event at Jam House, Akita Japan in July 2018. Keeping with the theme of "disco," yet also being who I am, I took the mix in an electro direction (think more early 80's than 70's!) Everything was performed with an iPad Pro and Novation Launchpad. Specifically, my equipment used was:Software:1. Korg Gadget was used to program the bass and synth sounds in advance, tediously learning the various parts of the remixed tracks - such as the iconic bassline in Smooth Criminal (see below).2. Blocs Wave was where all the samples were imported to and arranged.3. Launchpad iOS was the destination of the samples after Blocs, where they could be mapped to the hardware controller and triggered. In addition to the various samples for the remixes, I loaded three full tracks (my own) to three pads and used them to fill out the set and transition between the live remixes.Hardware:1. iPad Pro2. This is a live set played at the party Method at Jam House, Akita Japan on March 17th, 2018. The set is completely improvised, and recorded raw. I was going for an industrial, abstract vibe for the first half, then dipping into 4/4 acid techno territory. My equipment for this set was:Software:Trouble Maker (303 emulator)Elastic Drums (drum machine)Korg Gadget (bass and synth sounds)Audiobus (routing)MiMiX (app mixer)Audiobus Remote (on iphone- remote control for ipad apps)Hardware:ipad ProiPhone 8 PlusKorg Nanokontrol II (midi controller linked to volume faders on Korg Gadget)Akai Midimix (hardware knobs and sliders for Elastic Drums, Trouble Maker and filter perimeters of Korg Gadget)This mix was a lot of fun to put together, and having an hour really allowed me to build. Elastic Drums is really the star of this show. The effects and perimeter modulation possible in that app really make it a dream to play live.Download Tokyo Metro Vol.20 (mp3)

This is a short, wild romp into mashed-up disco and electro. I played this set for the event Global Disco in Akita Japan December 2nd 2017. For this set, I sliced up tracks by Donna Summer, The Bee Gees, Blondie and a few more recent tracks with a disco "vibe." All the remixed tracks were composed on ipad. Equipment and Apps used for this set:ipad Pro (2017)Traktor DJ for iPad (to play the tracks at the BPM I wanted)Blocs Wave (for sampling, slicing and dicing the tracks played from Traktor)Launchpad (for playing the sliced samples and loops live). The party was a lot of fun, and there are plans to make it a semi-regular event at Jamhouse Akita. Looking forward to more disco mixes!Download Tokyo Metro Vol.18 (mp3)
This is a live set played at the party Space Dock at Jam House, Akita Japan on January 19th, 2018. The set is completely improvised, and recorded raw (so forgive the hum of some too-hot lead cables!) My equipment for this set was:ipad running Elastic Drums (drum machine), Trouble Maker (303 emulator), Launchpad (pad sounds, effects), Audiobus (routing), MiMiX (app mixer)iphone 8 Plus, running Audiobus Remote (remote control for ipad apps)Korg Nanokontrol II (midi controller linked to Elastic DrumsExpect more live (and DJ) mixes to come! On episode 73 (February 28, 2017) of the TDRNow Podcast, we leave Tokyo Disney Resort and tell you each of our favourite non-Disney places in Tokyo. Chances are you’re spending some time in Tokyo outside the Parks, so you need recommendations on where to go. Since we both live in Japan, we have a few places we love to frequent. Chris’ places include Nakano Broadway, Shimokitazawa, Mt. Takao, Kichijoji, and Akihabara (Akiba Cultural Zone, Kotobukiya, Gachapon Theater, Mall Near Station). Trish’s places include Sugamo, Aki-Oka Artisan & mAAch ecute Kanda Manseibashi, Ginza, Mori Art Museum in Roppongi Hills, and Shibuya. To stay with the Tokyo-theme, our park tip this week is about the “day passes” you are able to buy for both the JR Trains and Tokyo Metro. The perfect way to save money if you are traveling a lot in Tokyo for the day. Our listener question asks if there is a Japanese version of the “Disney Parks Blog”. The short answer is yes! Guest: Richard Weisman, PharmD Host: Shira Johnson, MD On March 20, 1995, a group of terrorists launched a chemical attack on the Tokyo Metro, one of the world's busiest commuter transport systems, at the peak of the morning rush hour. The chemical weapon was sarin nerve gas. What do we know about this weapon, its devastating impacts on the body, and how to treat its victims? Dr. Richard Weisman, research associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and coordinator of their Weapons of Mass Destruction Response Program, reviews the critical facts about nerve gas and our current clinical understandings.
